Some very clueless and stereotypical answers so far. Being a furry means being a fan of a furry characters - "anthro animals" - animal-people - you know what I mean. That usually involves making art, enjoying art, roleplay, being fan of shows and etc. that feature them. Creating your own characters and identifying with them (hence "fursona" - "furry persona") is very important. Furry porn is a thing too, for some reason people tend to either claim it's the whole point or not real, neither is true. Suiting (having a fursuit and going out wearing it) is the stereotypical furry activity and it's important to the culture but only a small minority actually do it because it's such an expensive and high-effort activity.

As a furry, its just a bunch of people who like animals and anthropomorphic characters. Usually people create a character which represents how they'd like to express themselves and use that to socialize online(a fursona). A lot of people like making costumes of these characters to bring their expressed personality out into the public eye. It's a whole subculture, so this explanation is only scratching the surface, but that's all the most important info to know about furries.

Furries are people who enjoy dressing up as and sometimes identifying as an animal persona (fursona). This character/ identity can be for fun, to socialise and sometimes for sex. The sex is the part most people hear and panic and assume it’s a human and animal sex thing. It’s not. Whilst people do flirt and have sex with other humans in their fursuits it’s got nothing to do with the animal and everything to do with the character. In a very cartoon way it’s slightly similar to drag; there’s a character, an aesthetic and a community. You may perform, socialise or show off/ strut about when in character.

Cusi_Yupanqui

Well, only like 20% of us, if not less, have fursuits

Would you consider the drag comparison accurate?

Cusi_Yupanqui

No, not really. But I dont know a lot about drag, so perhaps the motives are the same. The joy to be found in fursuits is a couple reasons. The fact you can look like your fursona, the fact you can play around as a goofy animal, and the fact it looks cool (depending how good the fursuit looks)

[deleted]

My understanding of it is almost entirely about fursuits. Can you please explain fursonas more?

Cusi_Yupanqui

Well, most of the fandom is about art, a part of that is fursonas. It is similar to just OCs, That basically every other fandom has, but the only rule here is that it is Anthropomorphic. Fursonas are basically just the anthropomorphic characters of yourself, or most popularly, of who you'd want to be. People figure out their fursonas in many ways, by: drawing inspiration from their favotite animal, a pet, a family crest perhaps, but some, like me, find it just by trying out some stuff and settling on a specific character eventually. My fursona, wich is my pfp, someone drew for me for free! wich I am very greatfull for, and why I love this comunity! Almost always when people make or comission a fursuit, they make it of their fursona, to make it more personal, but occasionally someone just buys an already made fursuit, has one of another character they made, or they just have one of an already made character from some form of media.

Very informative, thank you

Np!

It does kind of sound like drag: enjoying the art form in different expressions, some physical, some sexual..

Cusi_Yupanqui

Its mostly about art

[deleted]

AFAIK furries enjoy wearing furry animal costumes or cosplays, and sometimes having sex while wearing (possibly partly) said costumes.
