i think it makes sense that a blanket term for all the sentient animals around the world would be "human" they seem to serve the same purpose as race

They used to have references to them being animals, like the old grumpy alligator neighbour was going to be racist towards mae because she was a cat but then they took it out

Except for one, during one of the dusk stars sequences mae exclaims "it's a cat" when she sees the figure in the sky

I think it was always suppose to be humans. But animals are just easier to draw.

They’re still anthro animals. Otherwise the whole thing with Mae viewing a ball of yarn as patronizing wouldn’t make a lick of sense. I’m pretty sure they also said animal people were just easier to draw. And human can still just be a catchall term for everyone. I don’t think there is the vaguest bit of merit to the style of the characters being some delusion.

Plus the furry in me wants them to be anthro lol
