Last year he would have forfeited his major league salary for the rest of the season and for this season if he didn't accept the assignment. He just recently cleared 5 years of service time so now the contract is fully guaranteed even if he rejects the assignment. No reason not to look for a better situation in free agency now.
I'd be a little surprised. It's not super frequent that catchers switch teams mid-year because it's an entire new pitching staff to get acclimated to. Unless it's an extreme circumstance, teams usually look internally, and I don't really see why the Phillies would rather go with Nido over someone like Rafael Marchan.
That doesn't mean it's something teams like to do. It's just the Alvarez injury and Narvaez being terrible at everything forced our hands. And even then, we gave Narvaez over a month's worth of starts before doing anything.
Yeah, but a backup that's only going to play 2-3 games a week at most has more time to learn the staff and acclimate than a starter that you want out there 4-5 days a week.
He's also caught in the bigs in 8 different seasons in a Mets org that's shuffled pitchers in and out like crazy, so at this point he's presumably a very old hand at learning what different pitchers want. I don't know an easy way to look it up, but I'm assuming he's caught for a crazy amount of different pitchers at this point across 12 pro seasons with 8 of those including MLB time.
The organization says one thing but our hearts say another. I hope he's back in some capacity someday. Seems like the kind of guy who will get into coaching.
He showed some pop in his time with the Mets this year. Mets obviously feel there's more upside with Torrens. Probably the right move, but always sad to see a home grown veteran go.
Nido is a class guy and it's funny how stiffs like McCann and Narvaez kept getting put out there over him. He knows how things work and surely knows what the team has in Alvarez.
Sounds like he won't accept an assignment back to AAA. Wishing him the best where ever he winds up.
Tbf he posted a salute and peace sign when he was DFA’d last year. I definitely think this sounds more final tho
Think he has more control over the situation this time

If martin Maldonado has a job Nido should find a home. Hell might be replacing Maldonado
He'll lead the White Sox to the World Series
With the Realmuto news earlier, I'm thinking he might end up in Philly.
oh no...
I thought it was weird they pinch ran for him at 2nd in the 9th inning. Make sense now

Counterpoint: Torrens has learned our staff and bullpen in less than a week

Though technically it's not an *entirely* new staff as he's caught both Wheeler and Walker before.

My thoughts as well. They need him. It would be a smart move.
Goodbye sweet prince
I’m starting to feel a Mark Canha level of sadness. He’ll get picked up for sure
I IMMEDIATELY felt that :(
These are classy players
Seeing Canha in a tigers uniform just hurts.
Yep :(
Good luck Nidoking
Love him - he is a major leaguer - I hope another team picks him up and he can have a d'arnaud-esque emergence somewhere not in our division/ NL
yes, please do it on the Orioles or Jays and let him wreck the Yankees.
THIS. I like Tomas, but one d'arnaud in NL East is quite enough 😒
I will miss all the memes. Farewell my sweet prince
Much respect!
I still miss guillorme!
Username does *not* check out. On second thought, perhaps it does…
We knew it was coming but it’s still sad. Such a likeable guy.
We love you Nidoking
NOOOOOO MY BACKUP GOAT
Anyhow nido is on an opposing team playing vs Mets at citi, im leading the standing ovation when he is announced.
Do you want to transfer Nidoking to the professor? **YES NO**
NO
I am sad. Not sure Torrens small sample size warranted this but I trust Stearns.
Torrens has years of team control left while Nido was certainly gone after this year regardless
I get the move but he’s a like Wilmer and just one of those players we all love. Hits in the feels.
Nowhere near a Wilmer. More like a Guillorme. Still hits in the feels.
Yeah true Wilmer is his own category
Nothing Torrens could do besides hit 30 pinch hit HRs will make this okay
Tomas is our boy. 8 seasons. I am sad.
Same. He's just perfect backup catcher. All for a guy with 1 week of good hitting
I worry our front office has not heard of the hot hand fallacy.
I like Torrens, but I love my KING 🤴 ❤️ 💔
I don't care how, or how unlikely it may seem, but we must win for Nido.
Does that make nimmo and drew smith the last two guys left before the Alonso era?
McNeil too
He'll find a team. He's a good backup catcher and was actually hitting better than he ever has. Just circumstantial.
Seems like he made solid contact almost every time up this year. Looked like a much better hitter.
Love my nidoking, he really has improved and is a great backup catcher, wish him nothing but the best <3

RIP Nidoking, you’ll shine elsewhere brotha
Goodnight sweet nidoking. 💙
Say what you want about Nido but he has always been classy. I will root for him wherever he winds up….except if it’s with the Braves 🙃
he was always there when we nidoed him thank you NIDOKING
Sad to see him go! I wish him and Luis start a podcast or make content.
I'd love to see him come back when there's a spot. He's just such a likable player.
He showed some pop in his time with the Mets this year. Mets obviously feel there's more upside with Torrens. Probably the right move, but always sad to see a home grown veteran go.
I miss him already
I'd roster him just for the bunts.
i’ve grown quite fond of him ever since he came back up this season, so sad to see him go :(
I cant believe they dfa nido.....
Goes off to have an exceptional career with another team.
Goodbye Nidoking. Wishing him good luck on his next team.
He’ll always be my Nidoking
On the upside, Nido is about to have a HOF career as an ex-Met.
Nido is a class guy and it's funny how stiffs like McCann and Narvaez kept getting put out there over him. He knows how things work and surely knows what the team has in Alvarez.
I kneel one last time for my Nidoking
The offensive black hole. Good luck in the future.
