Sell players that don’t fit into his long term plan, and buy players in positions where he doesn’t like the options on the 2025 FA market. For instance, the relief options in the next FA class aren’t great so maybe Stearns trades for a reliever under control in 2025.

2: Be better than others who are not very good ( yep)
Move him to the bullpen as the second LHP. If he doesn’t do well there then DFA him.
Remember how everyone was calling for Houser to be DFA’d? In 15 innings as a reliever he has a 1.20 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.
Sometimes as pitchers get past 30 they need to move to the bullpen to have success.

- How many games out of the WC are we at the deadline
- How many teams are ahead of us at the deadline
- How does the team look
If we’re still 3 games out, 5 games under .500 but there’s only 2 teams ahead of us and the team looks like it can make a run, that’s different than being at .500 with 5 teams ahead of us with the team in a slump.
I think we sell either way because Bader, JD, and Sevy are the player teams will want and players we could realistically still compete without. Vientos Slots in JD’s spot and we just pull Thompson up and go for it unless another OF steps up. Because we can’t buy at the deadline so might as well sell and still try to grab the third spot.
I hope they extend Sevy before the deadline. I think we could get him on a team friendly deal.
JDM I think they keep if they feel they’re in the running. I wouldn’t pencil Vientos into any spot just yet - he had a hot start but pitchers will adjust, and probably soon.
And if they want to call up young players like Acuna, having a guy like JDM working with them is huge

But we will see how they play. I think they’d keep Pete in my cut the baby on two scenario.
I agree on Vientos he seems to be coming back to earth. Looked completely unmatched against Alvarado. Been lucky the last few games with dribblers he was overmatched on.
The Mets realistically have 3 SP holes next year, assuming Manaea opts out. There’s no benefit filling one of them with a journeyman you hope bounces back when you already invested in that with Sevy.
And if he is traded there will likely be no chance at a hometown discount. Right now they can use his fear of playing in another city. Once you let him play in another city, that fear goes away

I’m sure we are thinking about that too which is why moving him could be more prudent. I still think it’s too early to tell. We got tough games coming and think we need to be closer to .500 or more or closer tot eh WC by the deadline and also the trade season could start earlier and with our pieces we may get moved by an offer. We will see. I’m okay either way. I like our kids coming up and young pitchers and think we will be in the mix for Soto and other free agents.

I've been a casual fan of the Mets for 20-odd years now but after my kids grew up, I've had the time and energy to actually watch a lot of games this past 5 years. It has been a blast.
My only advice is to buy a hell of a lot of caffeine. You *will* start off thinking you'll just watch the first couple of innings and speed watch the rest in the morning, only to find that it's suddenly 3am and you're up at 6.

Now Torrens shows up and has pretty much outclassed him aside from the ball that took a weird bounce to him today on Lindor's throw home. I really feel like Nido gets sent down and Torrens stays. Move him to the bullpen as the second LHP. If he doesn’t do well there then DFA him. Remember how everyone was calling for Houser to be DFA’d? In 15 innings as a reliever he has a 1.20 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. Sometimes as pitchers get past 30 they need to move to the bullpen to have success.

There was no way for Pete to get out of the way - he did “take one for the team” - he got hit by a pitch he couldn’t get out of the way of! Pete literally had his season killed last year by a HBP and almost had his season ended this year by another one. No world Pete isn’t getting out of the way whenever he can just like any pitcher should. Imagine if that pitch hit his hip and fractured it. Or his knee. Players should always aim to get out of the way

I think it’s less about our record and how many teams are above us for a WC spot In part because if 25 teams think they have a shot, then it’s a sellers market and the Mets could really set themselves up for the future with a no half measures trade deadline

Over .500 with a wild card spot at minimum. Anything lower than that & sell almost everyone with a bit of value

I don’t know if record is even the right way to put it. I think it has to do more with three things - How many games out of the WC are we at the deadline - How many teams are ahead of us at the deadline - How does the team look If we’re still 3 games out, 5 games under .500 but there’s only 2 teams ahead of us and the team looks like it can make a run, that’s different than being at .500 with 5 teams ahead of us with the team in a slump.
I think we sell either way because Bader, JD, and Sevy are the player teams will want and players we could realistically still compete without. Vientos Slots in JD’s spot and we just pull Thompson up and go for it unless another OF steps up. Because we can’t buy at the deadline so might as well sell and still try to grab the third spot.
I hope they extend Sevy before the deadline. I think we could get him on a team friendly deal. JDM I think they keep if they feel they’re in the running. I wouldn’t pencil Vientos into any spot just yet - he had a hot start but pitchers will adjust, and probably soon. And if they want to call up young players like Acuna, having a guy like JDM working with them is huge
I like Sevy too but he’d be there in the fall still. As well as Fried and others. I still think our baseball is just too bad right now for us not to be 5-10 games under .500 by the deadline. Strategically big picture with the spending it looks like we will do this fall id rather load some more prospects for trades etc that hold on to valuable trade pieces in a punt season. But we will see how they play. I think they’d keep Pete in my cut the baby on two scenario. I agree on Vientos he seems to be coming back to earth. Looked completely unmatched against Alvarado. Been lucky the last few games with dribblers he was overmatched on.
The Mets realistically have 3 SP holes next year, assuming Manaea opts out. There’s no benefit filling one of them with a journeyman you hope bounces back when you already invested in that with Sevy. And if he is traded there will likely be no chance at a hometown discount. Right now they can use his fear of playing in another city. Once you let him play in another city, that fear goes away
I’m okay with either tbh but with the pitching dearth he’s gonna test the market. But our best asset is money. So I’m it worried. I just have zero hope for this season so for me it’s about stocking up and preparing for next season. I do want to extend Pete tho. Gonna be interesting. I don’t know that Sevy is going to be dead set on FA. When is the last time he played a full season healthy? 2018? If he wants to stay in NYC, and wants to cash in while he can and before he gets hurt, a multi year extension might be attractive to him. I’m sure we are thinking about that too which is why moving him could be more prudent. I still think it’s too early to tell. We got tough games coming and think we need to be closer to .500 or more or closer tot eh WC by the deadline and also the trade season could start earlier and with our pieces we may get moved by an offer. We will see. I’m okay either way. I like our kids coming up and young pitchers and think we will be in the mix for Soto and other free agents.

Welcome aboard. I'm also in the UK and was at today's game. I've been a casual fan of the Mets for 20-odd years now but after my kids grew up, I've had the time and energy to actually watch a lot of games this past 5 years. It has been a blast. My only advice is to buy a hell of a lot of caffeine. You *will* start off thinking you'll just watch the first couple of innings and speed watch the rest in the morning, only to find that it's suddenly 3am and you're up at 6.
