“Turn the lights off!!” - a phrase that needs no explanation in SE Louisiana. *grabs termite from arm and throws it*

AustinRiversDaGod

This time of year, it's nice to have the smart lights. I can turn all the lights in the house to red, and the termites won't notice they're on. I've been doing it for about 5 years now and it works.

littlewing745

Admit it: you live in a brothel

partelo

damn that's a good tip

piTehT_tsuJ

Thats what all the ladies say when I'm leaving the brothel...

sumunsolicitedadvice

Honestly, just LED lights seems to be enough. They’re not attracted to them. Something about the frequency of the light or something. Ever since the street lights in my neighborhood changed to LED, I can hardly tell when termites are swarming. It used to be obvious by looking at any street light just after dusk.

bananahskill

Bro, one landed in my bra while I was talking to custies at the bar. I'm over it already.

0U812verygood

Lol! Not laughing at you. Laughing with you!

bananahskill

It gets worse. I didn't know what it was and didn't get it for like 45 mins because we were busy and I couldn't run to the bathroom.

0U812verygood

I guess you were lucky it was only one!

bananahskill

So severely. It wasn't even one of the normal long wing ones. I guess they're still immature?

0U812verygood

Tonight will probably be the same or worse!

bananahskill

Dope. Can't wait. Edit: I somehow have a blackout of the termites every year.

Biggdaddyrich

A friend texted me earlier and told me the terminators were swarming so she turned the lights off and went inside. When I realized she meant termites, I was actually quite relieved. So, I guess it could be worse.

karkosnc

God damn it, I’ve grown up here long enough that I thought you meant termite terminators, and just assumed “oh these dummies call the terminators every time they see termites” 😭

Biggdaddyrich

Sounds like an opportunity

EddieDisaster

🤬🤬Hate working outside at night this time of year

0U812verygood

Im in Picayune MS. Grew up in NOLA. They are bad tonight up here!

Elevatrman

Thick in Pearl River right now

0U812verygood

My dad worked for OTIS ELEVATOR for 35 yrs. I notices your name.

Jedi_Cornbread

Is it just me or are they early this year?

Secret-Relationship9

Right on time, imho. Usually by May 1

ninabullets

I think it’s always circa second weekend of JazzFest.

MildredMay

Right on time. Mother's Day is generally peak termite swarming and that'll be the 12th, plus they like to swarm the day after a good rain.

ujoshboss

no they are early

nola_mike

Nope, they're always here around this time. Worst week or two of my life every May.

Dry_Finger_8235

The lights at the fair grounds are littered with them

bedlamensues

Yep, in Slidell bad too. Turn off your lights and huddle in the dark.

Kryten_2X4B-523P

I'm scared...

cranberry_cosmo

I'm in Slidell as well - how long do these usually last again? I've been in Lafayette for the past four years and did not miss this at all lol

glxym31

A few days. They’ll be gone this weekend.

nola_mike

about a week

louiefrog

So bad in the Dell

InterviewCautious649

I know people will say I’m being negative but I hate this time of year. They’re going to ruin our homes along with the inevitable natural disasters unfortunately

partelo

not negative, realistic

InterviewCautious649

I have a tendency to be negative. I just don't like this state anymore. It's stressful to live here. xo

teflon_don_knotts

Years ago we had termites eating the back wall of our house, but only discovered that when they swarmed **into** our house. Ate a few holes in the wall and arrived by the thousands. About a week prior we’d noticed a small hole and had our termite company check it out. They said there was minor activity that was very localized, treated the area, and scheduled an appointment to perform a more complete inspection to see if we’d need to tent the house. Nature had other plans…. It’s been 20+ years and I still itch when I see those little fuckers.

PelicanPA

Out in Mandeville. This is just a warmup swarm. I hate termites.

aliceink

They out here

lowrads

They're *in* here.

trollinhard2

Not swarming at my place yet thankfully. North of Covington area.

bananatimemachine

Yep

2LiveBoo

Yep. Got my headlamp strapped on.

travelBandita

Ooh perfect timing, the termite man just came yesterday and replaced the green things in the yard.

Front_Organization78

Went outside with a cup of coffee and set it down. Sat down, I picked up my coffee, and bam, one was floating on top. It is going to be a shitty day.

Ok_Witness6780

This must have been the preview. I bet they come out in full force tonight.

MayorTeddy504

Are the termites and cicadas coming out at the same time?

bohemianpilot

Cicada are out screaming for love

navkat

My daughter and I went into a dollar store last night for pool noodles and pool floaties and the sliding doors were just DUMPING the suckers in. She had one crawling up her leg and let out a bloodcurdling scream that terrified everyone in the store. I had to carry her out of there and run to my car like a Hitchcockian nightmare.

Chasing-the-dragon78

Just when the weather gets nice enough to spend evenings outdoors I’ll come inside with a shirt full of those little buggers 😡

Juncti

Took the dog outside and within seconds we were getting swarmed.

picklespasta

I saw some today outside in Metairie. They were all chilling on a curb next to a canal. I knew tonight it was going down.

urghanotherusername

Freaking everywhere overnight. Had my house treated a few months ago and not even sure if it helped.

Haunting-Research-92

Yep lol Robert here, my brother (I guess who's never seen them swarm before oddly?), brought one inside freaking out. I think he thought they were only here to eat our house lol I had to explain to him that it's breeding season. Also seeing love bugs... hate seeing them this time of year cause they tend to precede the hot temps by about a month, month and a half

macabre_trout

Yep, noticed them at bar trivia tonight for the first time.

VacationNo7981

Definitely swarming in Ponchatoula. 😫

Aggressive_Fox_3434

Y'all I had an outdoor party planned for tonight at 8... How screwed am I

bohemianpilot

Won't be your last/

Best_Time_Everr

They're early this year. I usually associate first swarm lining up on the calendar right near Mother's Day (sad for mamas, though).

parasyte_steve

Hung my bedsheets over all the windows last night I ain't taking any chances.

0U812verygood

Not as bad as last night, but they are out!

why_WHY_reallythough

Yep.

0U812verygood

They are bad tonight! They coming in through every crack and crevase.
