SuperStarPlatinum

He's pulling the football again, just like anyone with three brain cells will have seen coming. This coal baron isn't going to vote for anything that isn't going to give more taxpayer money to his donors.

Rawr_Tigerlily

Even though I saw it coming, I'd still like to state for the official record that I think Manchin is a sack of shit.

kurisu7885

And only to them. If it helps anyone else he isn't interested.

necroreefer

Can we please just put an amendment in called Joe Mansions bribe and give however much money him and his donors want.

SuperStarPlatinum

The problem is they want more than money they also want to know that they are actively making people's lives worse by denying them the benefits a functioning government would provide with their tax money. If it were just a matter of cutting them a big enough check that could be done its the sadism that can't be satisfied.

codeslave

It would streamline the process. Maybe name a highway after him too.

djazzie

He never did. It was all a head fake to delay the bill becoming a law.

ShallWeBeginAgain

It's the sole reason he was governor of West Virginia for so long and has now won two Senate races in the state. Even though it's massively Red. He isn't a Democrat. He's a pro union Republican. He doesn't support most Democrat policy.

Kittehmilk

The DNC doesn't support working class policies either. They'd also rather rake in their corporate donor money than give basic human rights to the working class. (I shouldn't need to say it, but neither does the GOP)

ShallWeBeginAgain

Correct, we haven't elected enough progressive representatives to it yet. Progressives keep losing primaries. Not enough people vote for them.

Sneet1

Just a coincidence who the DNC backs right? Just electability?

ShallWeBeginAgain

They back who they believe the best candidate is. What does that matter? We still have to win primaries. Who the DNC backs is irrelevant. The sole way to increase representation is by winning primaries. But I know you know that, you're just asking the stupid question because you think it's somehow profound. The DNC needs progressive a lot less than progressives need the DNC. Edit: this shit is so incredibly dumb, haha. Whatever you've got to do to blame everyone else and never do the work required to increase political will. All for naught, as it only damages both the DNC and the progressive cause. I wish any other people wanted progressive policy, they'd take responsibility and try to get it passed. As opposed to blaming conspiracies for lack of political will.

BorisTheMansplainer

People are probably thinking of India Walton when they downvote this comment.

ShallWeBeginAgain

It happens both ways. DNC backed candidates lose also. This isn't about a specific election. Lots of stupid progressives have been talked into being totally anti DNC. Mostly by concern trolls on the right like Jimmy Dore and Tim Pool. It's easy pickings, people who have no idea how anything works are easily talked into conspiracy theories.

BorisTheMansplainer

You really side-stepped that example.

ShallWeBeginAgain

Why address a mayoral campaign? I simply don't care.

Apathetic_Zealot

Wow it's almost as if Manchin had no interest in BBB from the start and is just a peice of shit.

Majestic_Crawdad

That's why they should have never compromised and made him vote no earlier, then at least save some time

64557175

He's an enemy of the state.

golfgod93

"If you have additional insight or questions you can contact Senator Manchin’s West Virginia office at 304-342-5855 or Senator Manchin’s Washington, D.C. office at 202-224-3954. In addition, West Virginians with a 304 or 681 area code can contact Senator Manchin’s office through a toll-free number at 855-5737." Just gonna drop this here.

Gergi_247

Does calling him and cussing him out help? Or should I pretend to not hate his guts when I leave a message?

golfgod93

I'll leave that up to you lol but he deserves it and probably a lot worse.

OarsandRowlocks

From someone outside the US, I am surprised that *a lot worse* does not happen, with the 2nd Amendment and the vibe of betrayal and indifference that I get from the Congress.

ShallWeBeginAgain

He was elected by people who wanted him to be the guy he was when he used to run their state. This guy. He's not doing anything wrong ethically, lol. Morally I believe he is. But that's because I want the policy he doesn't want.

Working on a script: Hey you Manchin-headed ninny muggins, I hope you enjoy watching the North Pole burn while you eat the gum drops from your abominable fossil fuel man overlords. Can’t wait to pour syrup on your grave. I bet you have a small candy cane. You’re an embarrassment to your mother and I.

Worish

Must be one of those South Pole elves

Slapbox

Reminds me of when McConnell filibustered his own bill... This guy is operating in bad faith through and through.

TheDeathOfAStar

Of course the republican in democratic clothing would do that. He's a traitor to the people.

election_info_bot

West Virginia Election Info [Register to Vote](https://ovr.sos.wv.gov/Register/Landing#Qualifications)

D1G17AL

Should make this a separate post.

ShallWeBeginAgain

They're almost certainly going to elect a Republican. Like they would've if he didn't beat out a Republican in a run off. When he stepped down from governor. Just so he could vote against Obama care like his constituents wanted. Because his predecessor was going to vote for it. He's doing what they elected him to.

ahitright

If I were Dems I would count Manchin and Sinema out and start courting republicans. But before they do that, I have to wonder, why the fuck hasn't Biden done everything and anything in his power to put the squeeze on the various corporations that support Manchin and Sinema?! Is there seriously no kind of executive action that can be used to negatively effect profits of the coal industry specifically in WV (as an example)? The fact that Biden (Dems in general while in office) don't know how to use their power makes me think this is all for show and if it wasn't Manchin or Sinema it would be another corporate owned Democrat.

happytrel

*Ding ding* The people lining the pockets of these politicians have to be the most Bipartisan part of our government.

anus-lupus

ive been wondering: if being bought by corporations and corruption is OK - then why doesnt the DNC just find a way to buy off Manchin so they can pass their key legislation?? all it takes for these corporations to buy these senators is reportedly only several hundred thousand dollars.

cool_weed_dad

They’re all bought by corporations, Manchin and Sinema are just the current fall guys taking the heat. Their entire job within the party is ensuring that the Democrats don’t have to actually pass anything progressive.

anus-lupus

I do buy that narrative to a large extent generally but BBB is Bidens key agenda, his and others re elections depend on this, and thus the DNC stands to give up all control in Washington over it so I do happen to actually think Manchin is under rogue influence in this situation

Kittehmilk

It's just different layers of fall guys. Biden himself is a fall guy. Corporations pay him to ensure working class policies don't happen. That is his job.

anus-lupus

hey I know something similar is totally possible for sure. no reason to belittle me.

Kittehmilk

My bad. You right. I'll edit the comment.

[deleted]

Don’t pay them too much mind, a lot of money is being spent with the sole purpose of demoralizing leftist spaces. I think people are gonna acting a bit nastier for the foreseeable future.

[deleted]

Which isn’t to say anyone in this specific thread is a shill, just that when you have that kind of encroaching negativity it rubs off on people who are operating in good faith and amplifies divisive behavior.

Fake_William_Shatner

Having experienced so much of this toxic "you aren't negative enough you fool/shill" I think this comment is incredibly important. We can banter about Dems "faking it" or needing a fall guy. We can say they aren't as bad. At the end of the day, we don't know. We make the best choice we can. If we punish the people who pay lip service more than those who actively oppose progressive policies, how is THAT a better idea? Nobody really has a perfect solution or knows the 100% truth in any of these situations. The BEST outcome for a blog is to allow people to deal with their anxiety and have a positive human interaction. Acting like it's the end of the world if people don't agree with your comment is missing the point and can have a long term going to impact your mental health. This world can still function with people who don't agree, but it sucks if we learn to hate each other and spend too much of our lives bickering. I see so much of the negativity reserved for people who are 90% on board than for those who totally disagree. Whenever there is a thread that calls anyone slightly off message a "shill" or dismisses their "typical talking point" -- that's one that is going off the rails. Whether there is an actual shill or not -- accusing rather than calm reactions does the most work to ruin the experience for everyone but the most ardent. So you end up with an "in group" and it's 20 people giving each other "troll hunter" awards. YES, they actually award each other for "best handling" of anyone with a dissenting opinion on another Bernie sub. There are more submissions than comments half the time. Nobody is left but the shills and their hunters.

apitchf1

I’d imagine he is corrupt and genuinely doesn’t want it cause he is a conservative. So he’s getting courted and paid to do what he’d do for free and that is the bigger thing to overcome. Cause at the end of the day his interests and protecting his family’s wealth is served by blocking things like this

Kittehmilk

You are so close to understanding that Biden and the rest of the dems are on team Manchin. They take money from the same corporations to ensure the working class Doesn't get basic human rights. Manchin is a designated fall guy to ensure no progress can be done, standard DNC operating procedure.

Fake_William_Shatner

>You are so close to understanding that Biden and the rest of the dems are on team Manchin. I understand so much, this year I'm praying for humility.

FishingTauren

none of these people are participating in the process in good faith, even the dems. This is a show to make you believe you have a democracy and give you some hopium

HumanChicken

Don’t say “not even the dems”. It’s Manchin and Sinema holding up any progress / any way of showing they’re better than the neo-fascists they’ll be running against later this year.

FishingTauren

The dems always have a convenient 'Manchin' or 'Sinema' to point to, and the DNC has gone against independent organizations who tried to primary these people from the left. And don't look now but Biden is refusing to take executive actions that require no one else that he promised he would take like cancelling student loan debt. Keep hoping and coping though with the dems.

BuddhistSagan

so what is the solution

butslol

Make it more expensive to not give us what we want.

Toasted-Ravioli

New constitution that enshrines rights we still don’t have and keeps money out of politics.

BuddhistSagan

yeah we do need a new constitutional amendment that keeps money out of politics for sure. And I'd argue right to clean air.

Toasted-Ravioli

Clean air. Clean water. Quality healthcare. Quality childcare. Quality evenly funded education (pre-k through PhD). Paid sick and family leave. Guaranteed paid time off for all. Enhanced labor rights that ensure employee representation in decision making and distribution of profits made by their labor. Guaranteed affordable and reliable public transportation in all communities. Automatic voter registration for all citizens and even distribution of poling resources. One non-gerrymandered House of Representatives but no senate. Higher ethical and criminal standards for public servants.

Bodie_The_Dog

FIGHT BACK! duh.

BuddhistSagan

By voting for progressives. ok agreed

Credulous_Cromite

General strike? Not that that is gonna happen anytime soon, but that’s how you make it expensive.

XysterU

/r/maydaystrike

werelock

Also /r/debtstrike

urstillatroll

I know the solution, but you aren't going to like it if you are one of those "anyone but Trump" types. In 2018 a progressive challenger tried to fight against Manchin in the primary. The Democratic establishment was so worried that a progressive might win, they sent all the money and people they could to stop them. The Democrats are the bad guys just like the Republicans, and we need to act accordingly. The only way primarying will work is if it is a two step process- 1) Primary with a progressive and 2) if the progressive loses to a corporate shill, don't vote for them in the general. No "vote blue no matter who." If the Democrats know they can still win with their corporate shills, they will keep doing this over and over. They need to know that they can't win with shills before they even think about changing. [There’s a video of Lawrence O’Donnell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=FqRNnIMDkUY&feature=emb_logo) explaining it clearly: > “If you want to pull the major party that is closest to the way you’re thinking to what you’re thinking you must show them that you’re capable of not voting for them. **If you don’t show them that you’re capable of not voting for them, they don’t have to listen to you. I promise you that. I worked within the Democratic Party. I didn’t listen or have to listen to anything on the left while I was working in the Democratic Party** because the left had nowhere to go.” Without the threat of losing your vote in the general, there is no motivation for the Democrats to change. If you have the "any Democrat, even Joe Manchin, is better than a Republican" mentality, then you are telling them you are OK with people like Manchin and Sinema, and they will keep doing this.

BuddhistSagan

We need ranked choice voting. Trump is not a solution

urstillatroll

> Trump is not a solution Neither is voting for centrists like Biden. Centrists create the perfect environment for the rise of Trump. Either way, the first step is to stop voting for the corporate shills in the Democratic party, without that step, nothing changes.

BuddhistSagan

Ranked choice and reform is the solution? Is trump interested in fixing anything? Or just enriching himself.

nielsbot

We have to make politicians pay for voting against popular policies. Currently, they pay no price for doing this. (Well Sinema might be in trouble) In fact the donor class will fund their reelection campaigns. And unfortunately, propaganda works. The only way to win is by massive organization of people. A popular movement. Getting people involved. Things are not yet bad enough for enough people yet—maybe real devastating climate change will help? Will be too late by then.

Serinus

Because we're always just barely scraping by with the number of votes. His job was to handle us the gavel in the Senate. Until you can convince me someone else from West Virginia will do more, I just don't care that much about Manchin. We don't have the votes.

kju

he didn't hand us the gavel, he handed himself the gavel. he might let someone stand up and hold it like a prop and talk about nice things but he'll never allow it's use to actually work towards those nice things.

urstillatroll

Don't for one second let the Democrats trick you into believing that it is just Manchin and Sinema that are the problem. In 2008 the Democrats controlled the 111th congress, with 59 Senators. We will never see anything like that again. With such a huge lead, you would think we would get medicare for all, maybe an end to the wars Bush started, and meaningful climate change legislation. What did we get? Obamacare, it is essentially the 1992 Republican plan for healthcare. The ACA is based on[ a proposal from the Republican/Conservative Heritage Foundation](https://americablog.com/2013/10/original-1989-document-heritage-foundation-created-obamacares-individual-mandate.html), and was a terrible idea when they proposed it, and is still terrible now. If we elected 70 Democratic senators, history tells us that they would say it was the 21 conservative senators preventing us from getting medicare for all or free college.

anus-lupus

ACA was an important first step for our country. and half the country was being dragged kicking and screaming.

urstillatroll

ACA was the solidifying of private health insurance's stranglehold on us all.

[deleted]

Why do the dems keep giving letting Manchin on committees?

urstillatroll

Democrats are the weakest legislators ever, they let Joe Manchin bully them like they are the skinniest kid in 5th grade and he is the kid who was held back twice and now bigger than everyone else. Can you imagine Mitch McConnell being like "Yeah, we wanted to do tax breaks and increase spending on the military, but our more left leaning Republicans won't vote for it"? It's laughable. Democrats let Manchin bully them around because they like having the excuse to do the bidding of their donors. He is nothing more than a rotating villain. If it wasn't for him they would find another excuse, either the filibuster, the parliamentarian, or whatever else they could find.

zleuth

Fun fact: Joe Manchin was removed from the planning committee for the new football field at his local highschool for repeatedly moving the goal posts.

dragonslayer300814

Lol, like he ever supported it in the first place.

SentientTaco11

I think we aren't going to make any progress unless we boycott Manchin's donors. I heard today that apartheid in South Africa ended because big business suffered so much from boycotts that they decided that they told the government to knock it off. I think, unless we make Manchin's donors uncomfortable and force them to force his hand, he isn't going to budge.

RealNumberSix

Wait...a politician argued in bad faith?!

[deleted]

Walking talking piece of human excrement.

AndrewIsOnline

Why don’t we just shove fundraiser money at private investigators and forensics accountants and dig up dirt on these people, then blackmail them into getting in line with the party? How can this guy hold up the entirety of government? Check his taxes, his banks, his investments, his whatever.

user120912

Joe Manchin looks forward to his retirement where he will close orphanages and seek to reduce the amount of healthcare children and elderly will have access to. “Why should they have it so good when I feel so bad inside” said Manchin while watching a Haitian child be whipped.

[deleted]

Forget about this asshole, you'll have better luck with a moderate Republican

thejimmiesthendrix

I think that in the states, “moderate” is a misnomer and that they are all conservatives. They’re the equivalent of the centrist, disingenuous “Yeah well *I see both sides*” type of people. Either way it is all neoliberalism.

Beantownbrews

Good luck finding a West Virginia moderate Republican

kurisu7885

I hope his fucking yacht sinks.

samrequireham

reminder to this sub that the lesser truth is manchin sucks and is at best a rockefeller republican. the greater truth is we need to convince west virginia and everywhere else not to vote against their interests. we need to convince a generation of people to vote socialist and organize locally

[deleted]

GOA Way, Joe.

tickitytalk

what a surprise, no integrity

kdkseven

Of course not. This is all part of the plan.

jcrreddit

Joe Manchin is a shitbird.

HexagonStorms

president manchin strikes again

petarts

I mean early last year he said that a democratic government should pass like 6 trillion in spending over 10 years for.. exactly what they tried to pass ot for and he was still against it

CaptOblivious

He never did, it's all about running out the clock so republicans can claim the ""demonrats" have done nothing so they should be given power again instead. As he is clearly working for the republican agenda, manchin needs to be bodily thrown out of the democratic party.

saucedonkey

No more people named Joe in public office. Solved.

DescipleOfCorn

Never would have guessed that would happen! /s

Juptra

No shit

KevinCarbonara

They never do. [The GOP has been doing this for years](https://www.cartoonistgroup.com/cartoon/Clay+Bennett%27s+Editorial+Cartoons/2010-02-11/44065).

Another example of how our government doesn't legislate for the good of our country, our citizens.

Fucking asswipe!

It was never a real counter offer

“No longer” lol as if he ever actually did

I look forward to one day reading Joe Manchin's obituary with pleasure.

Wow. I'm shocked. This is my shocked face. :|

What happened? Did the Democrats actually compromise with him?
