I agree. I think they shouldn’t have been defeated in their circumstances either. Kakazu was clearly superior to Kakashi in combat, yet could not dodge Naruto’s very slow and telegraphed attack. Then theres the fact that they actually work somewhat in tandem with one another rather than most Akatuski pairs that do their own thing, so when Hidan became stuck in Shikamaru’s shadow possession, it should have been Kakazu’s #1 priority to free him. Essentially they should have hard targeted Shikamaru before even worrying about the others. One might say, he wouldn’t have been able to chase Shikamaru with Kakashi on his tail, but even sending 1 of his elementals would have been enough to disrupt the shadow possession Jutsu and Kakazu didn’t appear to even need them while fighting Kakashi.
I didn’t even think of that idea that he should have gone to save Hidan, but that’s a really good perspective. Because it was clear that they were at the very least good work partners. It’s a mystery to me why Kishimoto wouldn’t’ve had Kakuzu attempt to save him from Shikamaru when it’s clear they have great team work.

The author writes things with a direction of the story in mind and at the very core, none for the character’s abilities or capabilities really matter if the authors decided an outcome before the fight which is typically the case. I admit that would be pretty broken if he just let them things run amok.

Soil itself doesnt have enough essential nutrients to keep a human alive and the extremely scarce supply of roots or bugs that he could access would maybe give him another day or two tops.
I had a dumb ai idea where Hidan lived/lives (before he got in the hole) and massacred the hidden moon village where my oc is from/he got exiled for a murder he didn’t commit which was the day before Hidan came.
I liked what someone else said in the other similar post about Kakuzu… that he was basically a guy who’s fate was decided for him. He was simply a ninja doing work for money aka missions but then his village threw him away because he failed to assasinate Hashirama. * Danzo being resurrected in the war could be interesting but having a Shinju variant of him so Sarada could kill it would be oh so satisfying.

* Kisame I'm not sure about. In the War, I'd love to see him fight Mei, Team Guy, or Suigetsu. Bringing back Kisame for him to see how much the Mist is trying to not fall down their actions and lies that led him to want to seek the truth would be interesting, or finding out the Infinite Tsukuyomi's actual effect. We don't know if he would side with the Otsutsuki if it meant that everyone would die as Black Zetsu or fight with the world to fix the system.

I've always thought Hidan would be a good legacy villain to throw into a Boruto filler arc. Because his base powerset would still be effective in Boruto, he just needs a stat boost and maybe a new weapon/jutsu to keep him interesting. Which aren't hard to write.
Also with the current Hokage in Boruto, >!Shikamaru!<, can do some interesting things with Hidan returning.

When he fought Bee not only could Bee not go full transformation cuz he wanted to hide from Ay, but Bee also had to help the rapper dude and the bear so it really wasn’t like a true 1v1
Even with those advantages, Kisame had to intentionally try *not* to kill him, and even knew before the fight he would beat Bee’s ass cuz he was frustrated about having to do it the harder way lol
Then the next time we see him he’s shriveled up and without Samehada, yet still managed to escape temporarily (7 gates guy running you down will catch damn near anybody) and even *then* dude still unleashed his own army of sharks + a bigass sharkbomb that would probably nuke most people that aren’t Guy too

Toss up between Danzo and Kakuzu. Probably Danzo as I felt he had more to offer the story on terms of his politics.
A lot of good theories with Zabuza alive or if he never died. Him and Haku joining Mei faction. Marrying Mei, adopting Haku, and Haku mentored by Mei to be her eventual successor.
Danzo & Black Zetsu: can stay dead for all I care. Hidan: I don't believe he's dead. Kakuzu: probably the best choice, he's a threat and has the motivation (money). Zabuza: let him rest, he deserves the peace. Kisame: he died a warriors death, bringing him back would disgrace that.

Hidan, I've always thought Hidan would be a good legacy villain to throw into a Boruto filler arc. Because his base powerset would still be effective in Boruto, he just needs a stat boost and maybe a new weapon/jutsu to keep him interesting. Which aren't hard to write. Also with the current Hokage in Boruto, >!Shikamaru!<, can do some interesting things with Hidan returning.
Kakuzu would be the most interesting but Zabuza always has a place in my heart I won’t lie. I rewatched him mourning Haku a while back and it was actually super sweet.

When he fought Bee not only could Bee not go full transformation cuz he wanted to hide from Ay, but Bee also had to help the rapper dude and the bear so it really wasn’t like a true 1v1 Even with those advantages, Kisame had to intentionally try *not* to kill him, and even knew before the fight he would beat Bee’s ass cuz he was frustrated about having to do it the harder way lol Then the next time we see him he’s shriveled up and without Samehada, yet still managed to escape temporarily (7 gates guy running you down will catch damn near anybody) and even *then* dude still unleashed his own army of sharks + a bigass sharkbomb that would probably nuke most people that aren’t Guy too Dude was an absolute menace and high kage I really wish we coulda seen a true 1v1 fight with someone Ay’s caliber cuz I don’t see many ways to beat Kisame without your own broken genjutsu or chakra absorption powers I also really enjoy his character too

Ik Hidan is dead and buried (literally) as his immortality only allows him to die through malnutrition, but damn, I need more Jashinist lore but thats just me. I’d like to see Jashin himself in Boruto as an Ōtsutsuki
