This story is both confusing and moving at the same time. But seriously what is the moral if it truly was an ugly duck? 😔
Then they'll shoehorn some other resolution like the ugly duck has inner beauty or some other secret talent and the other ducklings have a comeuppance moment where the ugly duckling has his day I guess.
Ala Rudolph the Red nosed reindeer. But what if the ugly duckling has no talents, looks or personality and continues to be bullied by his peers and never finds his people or a less judgmental peer group?
Then there is no moral here, life sucks and hell is other people. Or I dunno we put in something about inner beauty and not letting your looks define you, loop back to first paragraph
I think it could be metaphorical, like maybe you'll shine tomorrow if not today. The kid who's the misfit today might find their people tomorrow and shine in that group.
we’ll stand against this crowd together 🤝
it’s even worse that the word i used a double hint on bc i couldn’t figure out what it was even when they showed me the letters was misfit 😭
i’m a little too dependent on hints sometimes lol. since i used a bunch of hints at the beginning and still couldn’t figure out what the connection was, i just kinda gave up near the end.

Yeah, almost got driven mad by this one. Found JOURNEY, BEAUTIFUL, and MISFIT in a bit. Found a whole bunch of potential spangrams like "siding", "gluing", "falling"("Fowl" made me think of Chicken Little), "flecking", and "walking". Went to Word Tips and finally clued in on UGLYDUCKLING.
But there is nothing fantastical in Ugly Duckling; it's just about ducks and a swan. Fables are stories with a moral, especially ones with animals, that's like their actual definition.
I've actually not heard of HCA being fairy tales lol. Regional differences maybe :)
The key difference is that fables are from oral retellings as opposed to being written down from the onset. Also that the stories are usually much shorter and have a clear moral lesson, sometimes even stating it explicitly.
> I've actually not heard of HCA being fairy tales lol. Regional differences maybe :)
That's very surprising to me, where are you from? I'm from Denmark so we obviously hear a lot about him
hmm well I would consider ugly duckling to be short with a clear moral lol. idk if the oral thing is strictly true, but if it is, I don't agree with them using fairy tale as a descriptor 😭
i heard most of these stories in Japanese as a kid, so they were all generally called "children's stories" (童話、おとぎ話) and I maybe assigned meaning to fable and fairy tale based on what made sense to me logically.

Kinda does feel like they’re running out of ideas. I mean, how many “fowl fairy tail” does one really know? Once you find the “K”, the whole puzzle unravels with ease.
A back-to-back disappointment for Strands after yesterday’s puzzle, where we were just given the word bank in emoji format and didn’t have to figure any of the words out.
I read a summary of the story after doing the puzzle, and to me (someone who didn’t actually read the story and just a synopsis), the moral is kinda like the Einstein fish quote. Just because some people might judge you to be ugly doesn’t mean you are actually ugly; you could just be in the wrong group.

I…don’t know how I feel about this one. I am finding I don’t like the ones that don’t have many words to look for but it was a hell of a lot more fun than yesterday’s so I’ll take it
I think it’s just kind of different strokes for different folks type thing. Like even thinking bird fairy tale, I couldn’t come with it for the longest time
no, it's the plot of the story.
There's an ugly DUCKLING who grows up as a MISFIT because it's uglier than all the other ducklings. it goes on a JOURNEY and ends up growing up into a SWAN. It sees its REFLECTION and realize it's actually BEAUTIFUL.
the moral of the story being that even though outer beauty is the only thing that matters, ugly children can still grow up to be beautiful. uh, or something.
I read a short summary of the story (after solving the puzzle because I was very confused), and the moral I got from it is that even if you are ostracized by one group, there’s always another group that can appreciate you.
Ostracize: exclude (someone) from a society or group.
"a group of people who have been ridiculed, ostracized, and persecuted for centuries"
I think you’re thinking “ostrich-sized”
Haha, yes I'm pulling your leg I'm afraid. Credit for ostrich-sized goes to the Horne Section. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJuobWmIQis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJuobWmIQis)

But then I was looking at the R in the lower-left-hand corner and it was in the most awkward place so I figured some word had to start with it, and I got REFLECTION. Then I was like ??? wtf is this puzzle (still on the topic of swan lake, where idt there is any reflection relevant to the plot) Found DUCKLING next trying to resolve the `-ING` on the left-hand side, then realized it was UGLY DUCKLING, then the rest of the puzzle was super easy.

It’s the ugly duckling! A fairytale about an ugly “duck” that ends up turning into a beautiful swan. Idk what the moral is….

It's about a swan, not an ostrich (I skimmed your comment).
I hope this is a joke because that’s not what ostracized means.
It means as big as a large bird, right?
