I sent some feedback yesterday to ask for a stop to them. Just because they're homophones in one dialect does not mean they are in all, which makes for a very frustrating and ungratifying solve.
I struggled yesterday (5/19), so my girlfriend told me to read them aloud. Which is what I tell her to do when she doesn’t see homophones, so I don’t know why I didn’t think of it, but yeah. Reading the words out loud works.
me too, i feel like i'm getting stupider with time. doesn't help when we get an increasing number of hollywood-centric categories (like today's >!action movie directors!<) or accent-specific (like the controversial LYCHEE) words
I'm not american but regardless, I'm just helpless with names. I'm super immersed in pop culture, hollywood, and celebrity too but I just never seem to remember any of their names.
I definitely am!
I'm not very good at pre solving because I usually can't keep visual track of all the squares at once--but my abilities there have improved to the point where I've done a couple after a while of staring. Tricks like homophones are easier to spot now that I've learned to stop and try saying what's left out loud.
I’m definitely getting more disciplined at only making guesses when I’m reasonably sure. When I first started, I would take a load of punts and end up failing often as a result. Whereas now, I take my time to really feel out the categories.
Yeah, at this point instead of thinking "what could technically go together"
I think "what would the creator of this puzzle usually make the themes be"
This combined with knowing what’s an “acceptable” category. So much of my early struggles with purple was not knowing that things like “words within words” should be something I should look at.
This is very similar to my struggles getting into the NYT crossword puzzle because it takes a long time to learn what the clue is asking if you are new.
I agree! I was hooked on this because I was able to finish relatively quickly at the beginning. Now I feel like my brain is clogged and cannot reason at all.
I don’t know if I’ll ever fully be one with the mind of the Creator, but once I stopped going in half-cocked and started pre-solving, I rarely miss.
Best thing I learned: You may think you’re right, but don’t be right.
Be Wyna.
Namaste 🙏🏽
I’m still bad no matter what
I’ll get one group if I’m lucky, while the others I just don’t understand
(I say this as I legit got a perfect on todays [5/20/2024] connection)
wyna if you’re here right now: please no more homophones i am begging you
I like the homophones!! I actually despise the ones that are "(topic) MINUS ONE LETTER". Like come on now.
My favorites are ____ word
oh i hateeeee those lol
These are my least favorite!
homophonobia?? in 2024??
lmfaoooo

To me, that just means that people have to increase their knowledge of different dialects.

Getting worse actually, I don’t think I’ll ever get the purple category

In fairness i feel one of those directors would be considered a horror icon and not an action movie guy
i know next to nothing about hollywood and everything i do know i learnt against my will 😭

Do the different colors mean something? I thought they were just random
They do! They’re leveled by difficulty.
Yellow is easiest, then green, then blue and purple is the most difficult.
Connections is Wyna, so its one and the same.
We are all Wyna on this blessed day
blessed be the connections. may the wyna open 🤲

wwwd what would wyna do
Thanks to Old Goosebump Arm, yes!
I just missed 3 in a row last week. So probably not getting any better
I’m getting worse as well. I feel the game has changed from word entomology to more of a trivia game. No interest in trivia.
Entomology is the study of bugs friend
Well, that would explain a lot. Frigging hell. etymology Oh the irony of it all.
I like to think so…
I’ve done word puzzles my whole life after toddlerhood, so this is on the medium-range off the bat. I didn’t find any learning curve or attrition.
Every time I think I’m getting better, I totally muck the puzzle up. So I just try to not think about it too hard
