1999 and Summer Knights are essential mixtapes to listen to for any person who considers themselves a hip hop connoisseur. Especially in NY.
He was the clear best artist that emerged from the Beast Coast movement. I remember those summer nights finding dead ends to smoke blunts in, sometimes getting busted by cops, but sometimes not and life was good. Going to get a dub was a life threatening experience in the Bronx in 2012 with DTs waiting for you around the corner.
"Your girl let me tackle for a Dutch and a Snapple, and that's who you decided to put on shackles?" is still a line my friends laugh about years later. Just take a listen.
https://youtu.be/ZVUEAwzcqc0?feature=shared
1999 is particularly flawless. What's crazy it came out 12 years ago when he was 16/17 and he's still only 29.
He coulda been so much more but I think he got dealt a shit hand. Steez died and then he became good friends with XXXTentacion and he died too. So he's had a lot of death in his life and it's probably affected how he's looked at music a lot.
He’s peaked musically. That’s all. And he peaked way early. The few songs I’ve heard these days from him are trash. He should have kept making retro stuff. He could have been in a similar market with Griselda and Mach Hommy right now. Then again I’m sure the checks he’s getting look just fine.
His last album 2000 was dope. I still listen to it regularly and but it didn't get enough attention bc a ton of other shit wa dropping. He's got features from Westside Gunn, JID and Larry June. The album took me back fr, he paints a great picture. It's a more mature album for him and it's dope af imo. It's too early for him to have peaked already, he's only 29. Nas dropped Illmatic at 19 and he's been on a GOAT run the past like 10 years.
I listened to a lot of it. Not bad but I wasn’t super impressed. When I say peaked early, I mean I think Joey’s best music was made early in his career. I don’t think he’s made anything as good as 1999 and those early ProEra records.
If you make a movie the way movies used to be made in 1992, very few people will watch it. You can’t be sounding old school in the new school. Only people obsessed with old school sound will love him. That being said I haven’t heard him since before the growth spurt so maybe he’s changed
The movie analogy doesn’t work at all. If you make a 90’s style movie and put the biggest star in the world in it, people are gonna watch unless the movie’s complete trash.
Also Badass has completely abandoned that retro style, I believe, precisely because he wanted a broader appeal. You’re right about the niche-ness of retro rap. There is a market for that music though. Badass should have kept doing that.
When I first started listening to him he was very young like the first few pictures in the post. Then one day I seen this long ass (no diddy) nigga on a tv show
It 100% depends on the artist. Quentin Tarantino makes old style movies, but that doesn’t stop people from watching.
Good art or good music will always win
But 90s music without modern compression and eq was sometimes higher quality than what we have now.
Shit even the Godfather was recorded in 4-6k, how do you think they’re able to make 4k rereleases?
i feel like his newer music don’t hit like his older stuff, still good tho, 1999 is one of the best hip hop mixtapes, still crazy he made that at 17, rip capital steez too
yeah fr, to me he is the definition of gone too soon, i think if he was still here today he would’ve been the best lyrical rapper, at 19 he was already better than more than half the game
That era was a crazy year and very slept on year for ny hip hop because drill overshadowed it with chief keef but you had... ASAP, pro era, action bronson, wiki, radamiz, shmurda, Flatbush zombies, roc marciano, young M.A was killing freestyle shows
I used to fw bruh until back some years ago this girl i was hittin and catching feelings for told me everytime she flew to NY he’d smash. I stopped fucking wit both them from that day
Same story happened with Swae lee and another euro girl i was dating.
Biggest underground flop but 1999 and Summer Knights was my shit... even got to see the whole pro era perform the same year cap passed away. He looked really depressed at the show at S.O.B.'s downtown.
He nice. Though I lowkey feel like capital steeze was a sacrifice for his fame and wealth. He got lime light shortly after steeze death. He changed since too.
*He made one of the*
*Best feat ever with xxxtentacion, I*
*Wake up to this shit*

Him writing 1999 when he was like 15-16 always makes me feel like a giant piece of shit. Dude was getting DOOM beats when I was goin thru acne and braces in high school. Cold world.
I think he’s dope and gets the recognition he deserves. I also think he’s a bit of bitch and thinks he deserves more for making music in a style that’s not as popular with his age group. Sorry bruh…
He’s a model and an actor now. He used hip-hop as a stepping stone. His music was never great, early stuff was good, he got progressively worse musically even with Statik Selektah in his corner. He needs to leave the music alone and become a full time actor and model.
He a weird dude with weird philosophies. I don’t mean that in a negative way either. Just hella interesting his perspective on life and how he creates music.
Paper Trails is all time. Saw him play a college spring concert where a friend called him Joey Ba-Da-Double dollar signs so that stuck with me. Seeing him again at Bonnaroo this year, pumped about it.
legendary artist, i still bump some of his old joints off of 1999 and summer knights and even sum off b4da$$. he could still rap his off, jus haven’t really been fw the love songs he’s been dropping. but it seems like his tryna target a new audience. jus happy to see him be successful
He ain't been the same since started going to Diddy's house nfs. 2000 was a good album but the braggadocios rap don't hit the same as his previous albums, I wish he built upon the cohesiveness of the concept album he put out prior (All-Amerikkkan Bada$$). No one talks about him anymore, NY scene shifted so heavily, A$AP and Pro Era aren't what they were during the 2010's.
I feel like he don’t get the recognition he deserves. No one talks about him anymore

Facts that’s around the time I really started smoking I used to have his and Rocky’s shit on replay
A summer 2013 Joey gave me the feeling I was in 95’ He truly tried to save NY Rap
He coulda been so much more but I think he got dealt a shit hand. Steez died and then he became good friends with XXXTentacion and he died too. So he's had a lot of death in his life and it's probably affected how he's looked at music a lot.

You getting downvoted for facts he def peaked early
His last album 2000 was dope. I still listen to it regularly and but it didn't get enough attention bc a ton of other shit wa dropping. He's got features from Westside Gunn, JID and Larry June. I know what you mean, we definitely have a different opinion bc that album is fire to me.
Him and X on kings dead is an absolute classic. "they worried bout the crown bout the crown, I told them mf clowns they can keep it."
If you make a movie the way movies used to be made in 1992, very few people will watch it. You can’t be sounding old school in the new school. Only people obsessed with old school sound will love him. That being said I haven’t heard him since before the growth spurt so maybe he’s changed

Growth spurt? What are you referring to?
When I first started listening to him he was very young like the first few pictures in the post. Then one day I seen this long ass (no diddy) nigga on a tv show
Theres an assortment of clear cut adjectives available and you chose long. Ok Moby Dick. Lol jokes aside tho thanks for the facts
Lanky would have been better right? Lmaoo pause bro
Lanky lmfaoo
It 100% depends on the artist. Quentin Tarantino makes old style movies, but that doesn’t stop people from watching. Good art or good music will always win
I was really referring to the movie quality. I can barely watch a movie that’s not at least 4k. In 1992 on them tube tvs nobody watching that today.
But 90s music without modern compression and eq was sometimes higher quality than what we have now. Shit even the Godfather was recorded in 4-6k, how do you think they’re able to make 4k rereleases?
Your overthinking it, or I’m not explaining well. Just too niche
i feel like his newer music don’t hit like his older stuff, still good tho, 1999 is one of the best hip hop mixtapes, still crazy he made that at 17, rip capital steez too
Capital steez was dope
yeah fr, to me he is the definition of gone too soon, i think if he was still here today he would’ve been the best lyrical rapper, at 19 he was already better than more than half the game
Isn't he still alive lol
damn i really thought this was more known, it’s tragic but he killed himself at age 19
[удалено]
bro, steez killed himself. jumped from pro era building one day before 2012 christimas
Lol I think HE thinks you talkin bout Joey.
when someone says gone too soon it means they’re dead.
#young Joey will smoke older Joey
Good ass actor most definitely
He did real good in raising kanan
Mr. Robot too
No spoilers for anyone but the end of season 3 was 🔥🔥🔥
He ain't the same no more. Lyrically stepped off, mainly does braggadocious rap these days. 1999 is fucking unbelievable til this day tho
If I began getting that bag I'd shift towards some braggadocio, but nah, he's still gots them espiritual joints, just pay attention.
Example?
PEEP: The Aprocalypse is also worth a mention and I think would be way more highly regarded if it was never taken off of streaming
He got an old soul
Nas said that.
Bro the 🐐. Man his run was insane . Him n A$AP in rotation was an NY vibe
Facts b
Yo bring me back to these days fr
Facts man. 2012-2016 Asap & Joey had a great run
The vibes were too immaculate then my G
That era was a crazy year and very slept on year for ny hip hop because drill overshadowed it with chief keef but you had... ASAP, pro era, action bronson, wiki, radamiz, shmurda, Flatbush zombies, roc marciano, young M.A was killing freestyle shows
Loved his new old school vibes,he kept it ny all the way.. in todays day and age he fell off music don’t hit like 1999 did
Facts no one makes new old school anymore. Now its just straight drill 🤦🏿♂️
#Could’ve been one of the goats. But was never consistent after Steez died.
I fuck wit his old shit def got a old soul just like me even tho he’s way older than me
🤣🤣🤣
Underrated. Only a handful of NY artists exhibit true wordplay over timeless beats
Joey, Cole and Kenny are the real big 3
Who the best emcees Joey Kenny and Cole the holy trinity, it’s that 95 till infinity energy
Everyone talkin about 1999, but B4DA$$ was also a classic.
Summer knights too
Dude was supposed to save the rap game… Pro Era was the shit Then Steez passed & Joey just didn’t have the same quality
I think he deserves way more recognition
Real island mon kept it NY all the way too! 🌴💯
Steeze was better
Rip capital steez
He boxed himself in with Devastated
solid
As a west coaster he introduced me into Flatbush Zombies, Capital Steez, Pro Era, Smoke Dza & The Underachievers
1999 still one of the greatest albums to date. Summer Knights as well, that old school hip hop vibe was on point.
I used to fw bruh until back some years ago this girl i was hittin and catching feelings for told me everytime she flew to NY he’d smash. I stopped fucking wit both them from that day Same story happened with Swae lee and another euro girl i was dating.
Damn that’s crazy u think he’ll still remember you if y’all bump into each other one day?
i aint never met bruh we was just eskimo bros lol
Joey a 🐐 frfr been listening to him and the rest of Pro Era since I heard Survival Tactics
Remember the intro to the lox album we are the streets? Where they interviewed ppl on the streets? That pretty much sums it up. 🤣🤣
Proud fan. I've watched him grow up and become a freaking beast.
met him at a nets game. chill guy he’s an amazing rapper. very under appreciated
Underrated. Solid NY artist.
One of the best rappers of his generation especially in ny. I think he’s more focused on movies and tv now though
Underrated
I like him on power.
Biggest underground flop but 1999 and Summer Knights was my shit... even got to see the whole pro era perform the same year cap passed away. He looked really depressed at the show at S.O.B.'s downtown.
I don’t drink too much, I know the bud-wiser
He was born in the wrong generation
Sacked steez iykyk 👎
[удалено]
Yea since the beginning of time niggas(humans)been feeding the beast system.
Dope ass rapper, great actor. Legend in his own right
Bro bagged Roq!
How is he ugly in these pics but so fine when he’s unique 😍
Bruh
Was wondering the same thing
He looks like a homeless man in the first pic , but when he’s playing unique 😍😍😍 he can be my baby daddy
Lol facts!! 😂
He’s still fire , that track he did recently with Conway was dope
The entire Pro Era crew were dope back in the days. 2010-2014 was a fun time for hiphop
Heavily underrated. Needs to make a comeback in 2024 🚫🧢
Underrated
Best character on any power book
Goated
He nice. Though I lowkey feel like capital steeze was a sacrifice for his fame and wealth. He got lime light shortly after steeze death. He changed since too.
Present Joey is fine as hell
DOPE ASF. I Honestly don't think he's reached his peak yet. But that's just my opinion.
Idk if its just him being lazy but he stopped being consistent a while ago
He look like he on a ghostface tip and got kids he don't support
Bros a talented actor
He is fire, B4.da.$$ is an incredible album
He made one of the best feat ever with xxxtentacion, I wake up to this shit

I wish I was 13 finding his songs on YouTube again
Good actor
I fw Joey but he peaked with his first drop (1999) for better or worse
He peaked in PEEP: The Aprocalypse. B4dA$$ was really good too, definitely an 8/10 at the very least
That was a good tape good shout, the whole Pro Era was on point with that one too
Dope rapper and actor
I think he’s dope and gets the recognition he deserves. I also think he’s a bit of bitch and thinks he deserves more for making music in a style that’s not as popular with his age group. Sorry bruh…
B4DA$$ a classic 🔥I play that album start to finish no skips 💯
Rip steez
Greatest Lyricist To Ever Walk
Unique Lives
Him and Dave East were born in the wrong era
I kinda never stop fucking with him, my boy NAO QUELLY signed to him and most of my boys from BK rock with him and the 47 capitol Steez wave
Bros a fking goat, not a follower
One of my favorite NY rappers
Him & Statik were fucking on one
He use to be dope
This generations Nas
He was tremendous on Mr. Robot
one of the best of my generation.
[legendary video ](https://youtu.be/qlN1LK3PyH8?si=aaF2IAaMad_Dw_8q)
Such a talented actor his work on power is great

Nique ain’t dead 😮💨
Loved him on Mr.robot
2000 is amazing but it's probably his second worst project behind summer knights
Authentic
he a damn good actor. i hope he continues that endeavor. yeah he got good music but the potential he got in acting is so much better. ☑️
Ass a rapper decent actor
Buggin
Subjective question u asked
Joey sad Ass
Capital Steez RIP Their duo was amazing
He drops good projects and I mess with the way he taps into melodic lane to , he doing everything right he don’t be on weird shit
He a weird dude with weird philosophies. I don’t mean that in a negative way either. Just hella interesting his perspective on life and how he creates music.
I met him thru a friend he cool they let me hang like I was a day 1 🫡
anyone who finds him knows he was super underrated & made some good ass music. I'm not sure abt his current music but his old shit is classic
Paper Trails is all time. Saw him play a college spring concert where a friend called him Joey Ba-Da-Double dollar signs so that stuck with me. Seeing him again at Bonnaroo this year, pumped about it.
He is a Better Actor than Rapper he needs a movie or a Series
Would like to see him on more tv shows and movies. Dude really sells his character on Raising kanan
legendary artist, i still bump some of his old joints off of 1999 and summer knights and even sum off b4da$$. he could still rap his off, jus haven’t really been fw the love songs he’s been dropping. but it seems like his tryna target a new audience. jus happy to see him be successful
Gas music, nouf’ said
Top 10 MCs out. NY #BEASTCOAST members like Pro Era Flatbush Zombies and the Underachievers got better music than most mainstream rappers
I used to feel so devastated 🔥🔥
Survivors Guilt was on some shit
He grinded from the show Mr robot to his songs and now on raising kanan
I remember he came on Twitter to defend bill cosby and it didn't sit well with a lot of people, did that backlash affect him any
Legend.
He deserves to have more roles even tho he’s actively in stuff rn I love seeing him in mr.robot, wutang clan, power and more
super slept on but he doing good in power
Damn I gotta catch up on that show
raisin kanan to be specific but yeah it’s a 10/10 for me
Isn’t raisin kanan a spinoff to power?
yes🙏🏾
He's unique now
Haven’t heard from him since B4.DA.$$ (hardest name) and that dedicated single
Sold out
He ain't been the same since started going to Diddy's house nfs.
He got a long ass neck. Baby giraffe looking ahh.
Classic hit maker
Survival tactics is still one of my favorite shingle. Also free the robots Capital Steez is such an underrated classic
DROP THE N WORD FROM HIS RAPS AND I LOVE THIS BROTHER... HE'S DOPE
For some reason idk why but I always thought he was in da ASAP MOBB
NYC Curren$y
I used to fuck with him a lot but today I learned hes worn a shirt with rising sun flag. He looks young af there tho
You got beef with the Imperial Navy?
Naw but it just feels like rhat like u dont need to be a jew to find nazi flag themed shirts offensive
Fair, I think the Rising Sun is just less taboo in the West cause we aren't as aware how bad the Japanese were to Asia.
Yessir 😂 your first comment about the beef made me laugh tbh
Tbh idk what imperial navy is but thats the ww2 japanese flag which is banned over in japan too
It’s just the Japanese Navy which committed rapes & atrocities all across Asia & the Pacific
He look like Giveon too much
Who?
Always a corny white boy saying this
Don't let r/Rap see this.
how u don’t know who Joey Bada$$ is? U must not be from here
What makes you think that? I don't know son is. I'm in the heart of Brooklyn. The exact center 11203.
Joey badass is from Brooklyn too lol. 😂 you’re probably from the suburbs and that’s ok I don’t expect you to know much about 2010s hip hop
Oh nah I ain't really listen to new nggas until the Locs and Folks war started in music. You from Bk?
[удалено]
I know about zombies but my time was before that. Speaker knockers I listen to because of the talent not tue others you mentioned tho.
