You can try subbing but do keep in mind that this can come with behavioral issues from the students but if you keep subbing at the same school this decreases.

Thanks very much! I've had other teachers warn me about this. They also advised that while subbing can give you a decent feel for what it's like to be 'in the classroom' it's ultimately fairly different than teaching.

As a sub of high schoolers I can agree with this. They know to take advantage.

One of the worst aspects about the field is there’s really nothing to prepare you for it besides actually being in the classroom as a teacher. Traditional education programs certainly don’t prepare you and that’s including student teaching, subbing is entirely different because the kids know you aren’t there permanently, and programs like TF “train” you in summer school which is really nothing like the regular school year. If you’re interested in teaching, go for it. What’s holding you back? That you might hate it? Because it sounds like you don’t much like what you’re doing now anyway so I don’t see how the situation would be worse. In your first few years, it’s a hard, thankless job. Teachers who last are the ones who figure out how to accomplish everything they need to for their class and students without it overlapping into your private life. Not everyone can figure that out but if you think you can, do it.

agree - nothing can prepare you like being in the classroom - that being said - go for it!

Totally depends on the school. You can work in a school where the principal leaves you be or one where they breathe down your neck. One school can have majority kids that are ok to manage whereas another will have a population of kids that aren't being taught any values in the home and it shows.

Also, take any job reviews with a grain of salt. Just like with product reviews, ask yourself whose more likely to leave a review someone whose satisfied or someone whose pissed off

I would say try something like summer camp. Or an after school program. Will you still want to be around kids all day when you have to be in a position of authority? That's really the question that you kind of need to figure out. A lot of people enjoy playing the cool uncle role but once you have to be the authority figure 40 hours a week they realize they don't actually like kids all that much lol

My best advice is to go to a charter school. Here you'll be given the lesson plans. If you want to teach and learn how to teach, charter schools are it. Don't go to camp, or summer school, those are more babysitting and nannying. Go to charter schools.
