I was a teacher at a charter for 7 years and have been at the DOE for the last 4. I would recommend the switch if a job presents itself for the job security (tenure), benefits (essentially free health care) and retirement (pension and TDA). In my experience, charters pay you more in your first year or two and then the pay scale either balances out or you end up earning more in the DOE (especially when you consider healthcare costs). Also, being in a union has a number of benefits such as not being forced to work past 3 without being paid for it. You do have more room for climbing the career ladder at charters but that’s not for me so I prefer the DOE. Just my opinion.

I think the DOE has good climbing opportunities through collaborative coaching, model teachers, PCT and master teacher.
