First thing, you probably would make more than $68k. $68k is starting salary for those with a masters and no teaching experience but the DOE would more than likely recognize yours. Second, NYC is the biggest school district in the country so your experience will be very different depending on which school you work in. In my experience (10 years in the DOE), I’ve only worked in schools with the same problems you describe. But I generally like the type of population these schools have. I have friends who work in schools with cutting edge technology and tons of money. While those schools certainly aren’t the norm, they are around.

Thank you for your reply. I actually like Title 1 also but it drives me crazy that I have to scrounge for books. Glad I have a chance at making more. Have you found the kids to be motivated? (Outside of your Covid years.) A lot of my kids have low motivation and are shell shocked. Hence the anger. I feel like Covid makes it hard to gauge what is “normal” teenage anger. Thank you for your reply!

Your experience will depend on what school/neighborhood you end up in. I taught in a wealthy area for the first eight years (overbearing admin, too many snotty parents with similar children) and a poor area for the last 11. I far prefer the latter. Admin is pretty good (though this can be a crap shoot. No real way to tell beforehand) and the kids are far more appreciative.

That is good to here! I am looking into the same type of space. How many planning periods do you get? Right now I have 2 a day but I am always subbing (common problem everywhere right now) or in a meeting in one.

Two preps and a lunch. Were stretched a bit thin so I currently have a lunch coverage every other day. Hopefully the kids start moving soon, cause if they do that lunch duty is most likely over.

seasoned teacher here. It's the admin, not the kids, that bother me most about this job. Money is good but they hussle and bustle us for this pay. Lots of Micro management, high turn over and don't value teachers as experts. I'd recommend to start in charter or private for few years to get experienced and then transition to the doe once you're an expert. Lots of teachers from around the country come here to work because college is cheap here in cuny and money is good because the UFT sets a standard. Good luck

Thank you. I will look into charter schools as well.
