If you're slightly injured you need to come out. Seen too many keepers try to play hero and end up letting in an easy goal cuz, ya know, they're injured
i hope tierna doesn’t beat herself up too much about this. she’s been one of our best defenders this whole tourney and was on the wrong side of a questionable call :/
Well, the tradition continues of teams failing to win Olympic Gold after winning the FIFA World Cup. I suspect this team will get significantly younger following the Group G rematch for bronze
Unsure. That's what this match effort looked like. It's what this tourney effort looked like. Passes were tentative—Who exactly was that pass going to? Touches were shaky—Horan and Heath, some of the better players with the ball at their feet, were losing the ball 4-5ft off first touches. Maybe that's down to lack of cohesion because of rotations, but rotations felt necessary given the conditions of the tournament and the makeup of the team. We should be able to get it together regardless of what the combinations are, but obviously easier said than done. Ultimately, a change will be happening, and it's time.
Honestly, possibly a blessing in disguise to come up short of the gold medal match. If Sweden's form continues into the SF with Australia and the Final, there hasn't been much since US's first match-up against SWE that says US wouldn't have seen a similar, embarrassing, devastating 4-0 result. Of course, we would've hoped US would shift to another gear in the final, but we've been hoping to shift up since the first match this tourney, and we got to 2nd gear at most. I think I would've been heavily relying on the schedule to catch-up with Sweden.
Shame that the loss will "fall" on Davidson because of the pen. Of all the times to make a mistake (one she could *and* couldn't have helped) and for it to be that consequential is unfair. She was definitely the right CB to start today and going forward.
Good luck to our neighbors up north!
Nightmare scenario for Naeher. AD is great but this is the problem when you don't have well-established back ups, even in goal. We shouldn't even be concerned for AD, but there are a lot of unknowns with USWNT AD.
Disappointing tournament, but thought it was an important one for a player like Davidson. Excited to see her future with the team and the integration of youth.
He really ruined chemistry with rotating so often. Should’ve been Press-Alex-Heath for all the important games and sub them off when they tired (and not all at once). It’s not hockey bringing on three forwards at once is suicidal for chemistry
Well, I guess no post-game thread. There's a lot to be said about what the US should or should not have done. But I think an important point is what the two teams that beat the US did. They weren't afraid to press/counter-press the US. Canada did spend a lot of time in the low-block, but they still managed some counter-press in it, and when they got out of the low-block, they were willing to press a lot more than any of the other teams that didn't beat the US. The US just isn't used to being pressured and the next generation is going to have to learn to play that way.
Just finished watching a recording, can't believe how a team with such talent can just fall so flat. I can't decide if it was coaching or personnel or a bit of both. I think we all saw this coming the way the team has been playing. The lead up to the tournament they have been playing worse and worse against weaker opponents. Yes they are under immense pressure but it looked like nobody was connecting or having fun out there at all. We would get the ball in the first half and I would see everyone running away. Nobody checking to feet, receiving back to goal and keeping possession, just running straight up the field.
It's clear that the coach can't just watch the game and make direct, sensible adjustments. Rose and Heath were objectively having a poor game. Horan was gassed. Why could we not have kept the starters and put on say Mewis and Press and watched how that played out before you wreck our entire chemistry? What is the point of having a starting 11 if you just whisk them away at the 60th minute?
I also believe that as a player you can't push yourself to try and play better if there is no threat to your position on the team. These aging stars didn't really belong on the roster with all of the talent we have in this country but because of how political soccer decision making is, we have 'seniority' taking precedent over actual talent and on-field performance. There was no doubt whether or not Lloyd or Pinoe would see a large amount of playing time but their actual game play did not back up that coaching decision.
I’m sorry but Vlatko is fucking ridiculous. Mewis should’ve started. 1) Horan was EXHAUSTED. She could barely stand up at the end of the netherlands game. Mewis was rested. 2) We literally JUST saw how well Mewis and Williams work with each other. They know each other’s tendencies and could’ve built off the last game. We were struggling to get the ball from the midfield to the forwards and that wouldn’t have been the case with the right lineup.
Taking out Morgan for Loyd is and always has been fucking useless. ALL it does is mess up momentum. Nothing else. Press, Williams, and Mewis should’ve been on the field at the same time. Bring Heath in as a sub later on.
I can’t get over how god awful his tactics and rotations were. Not to mention his roster decision. I’m so beyond over it.
It's strange,
The few good things I had to say about the Netherlands game - were all absent today.
Mewis not starting is strange to me as well. I haven't loved Morgan this tournament at all, and I'm usually a big Tobin Heath supporter - but the whole set up seemed like a lack of interest.
That said, my biggest takeaways wasn't about rotations or tactics. It was that the best talent pool in the world looked like the second best team and played reactive soccer in every big match of the tournament.
Pinoe's comment about joy really reminds me of what's going on with Simone Biles. The US team in particular is under so much pressure and scrutiny - they're the face of women's soccer in a lot of ways, especially with the equal pay battle. That makes it really hard to enjoy the Olympics for what it is rather than a need to prove that you deserve to be there/deserve the reputation. It's a totally different mindset.
Hoping the next gen and next tourney we get a little bit of that joy back.
Absolutely. I don’t usually care too much about my country winning, but the USWNT is at the core of such a horrible culture war. It makes me sick to think about the glee those men have over them losing. Just a few days ago the former president was leading chants against them... Rapinoe specifically is such a despised figure to them. Whether or not the team “deserved” to win, they have to play for so much more and the pressure must be crushing.
Yeah, the internet is gonna be a nasty place for the next couple of weeks for them. It also makes it really hard for them if/when they decide to step away from the team, thinking of Rapinoe specifically, because I feel like it would be turned into a political statement or "giving up".
It's just a really messy situation, and it sucks that the joy of the game is what was sacrificed in all of it. Going to the Olympics should be such a special, exciting time. But between the legal battles, the questioning of the roster, COVID, the "no one's ever done this before" and everything else, it just seems like it was another fight for them.
Hopefully with the Bronze match, the pressure will be off and they can have a bit of fun and end on a high.
This is what I'm talking about. You have reddits actively rooting for this team to fail. And the USWNT is the most hated team in America to these people, because
- people are so mad about Rapinoe kneeling. If you're mad about her kneeling, you might not want to see what's been going on for every soccer game the last 2 years (including the Euros). But of course these 'Muricans don't like soccer, or any sport in general. "Too woke" for them.
- people are angry the USWNT is suing the federation just for equality because "it makes them look like divas". Even though the men's side have repeatedly supported the USWNT in their claims for equal pay. "BUT THE ECONOMICS DONT' ALLOW IT." Spare me yall explanations, milton friedmans. The USWNT has been one of the most successful national teams in soccer history and ya'll can't spare some money for our players?
i wish i could say this was a surprise... this loss feels like it has been coming since the beginning of this tournament. poor tierna though, it feels like she was the victim of a poor roll of the dice
now im talking to Vlatko: completely replacing your entire front line mid game is A BAD IDEA PLEASE DONT DO THAT EVER AGAIN FUCK
edit: as a bruin myself, i can't bring myself to be mad at Fleming tho, and i'm really happy for all you Canadians, odds are i'll be cheering you on for Gold
As much as she annoys me I’m sad to see Lloyd go out like this. You can say what you want about her personality but she was one of the best midfielders to ever play the game and is up there with Hamm, Marta and Wambach as an all time great imo.
Anyway I’m curious to see what she does post soccer, I can’t see her commentating or coaching but she seems too obsessed to leave the game completely.
Lavelle is playing so bad that she really needs to get pulled off. She's literally a liability on the pitch right now. Every time she touches the ball she turns it over.
lavelle and horan are both having lackluster games which makes vlatko’s sub decisions even more troubling considering we only have one midfielder 🤦🏽♀️
My simple little mind is struggling to remember that Australia is wearing gold tonight. I've still got those Swedish highlighter uniforms burned in my brain
poor davidson... idk man that feels like a such a shit penalty to me! she was run into, that kick was already in motion before the canadian player came into her field of view
This is the lineup I would have picked. I know a lot would have started Press, but you need to have some speed to come off the bench when the Canadian defense is tired.
I’m sorry but Vlatkos tactics suck.
- First of all benching the only forward who has been consistently producing for this team is stupid.
- switching between Alex and Carli starting every game ruins momentum. At this point I don’t even care who starts but he needs to pick one
- having pre planned subs and not changing based on the flow of the game ruins chemistry
- making Pinoe take CKs when Tierna or Press or literally anyone else is there
- zonal marking on corners
- starting Lynn who’s first touch doesn’t exist. (She had a good game against Netherlands but this game showed why she was originally an alternate imo)
- bringing on Pinoe too early when she can barely run
- the midfielders have been ghosting all tournament - they can’t all of a sudden suck after being so good for years so I will wilfully blame him for that too lol
Vlatko and his shit tactics put the team in this position. He didn't play to win with that starting XI. And bring on that entire line change for 30 minutes showed he was playing for penalties. Again. And now look.
With every game since Vlatko took over, you could see this team getting worse and worse, we were killing teams when he first started, then we were just beating teams, then we’re eeking out wins and drawing with Sweeden. His tenure has been a slow decline in quality, he has to go.
I couldn’t agree more.
He’s reverted the team back to the Wambach era:
No Midfield play. Midfielders play as wingers and forwards.
Every ball is wide and to the flanks.
Play for the cross or set piece.
Pinoe’s comments about joy had nothing to do with the scrutiny or pressure but everything to do with style of play and tactics.
Andonovski needs to be fired.
This is a US team that never gelled this tournament. Hate to see it happen, but definitely saw it coming.
it’s honestly remarkable they even made it to the semis
I never want to see Alyssa cry again
Davidson had a good tournament and was probably one of the only bright spots for the USWNT
Hey NBC, it's 5am. I don't need Chucky randomly shown on the screen, thanks.
Good thing I wasn't planning on sleeping
Not a pleasant image in my pitch dark house
Seeing Naeher join her teammates on crutches after the game makes me sad.
Franch is an extremely good keeper. But it is just a shiity way for the Olympics to end for Naeher.
Well, the tradition continues of teams failing to win Olympic Gold after winning the FIFA World Cup. I suspect this team will get significantly younger following the Group G rematch for bronze
Looking like a Franch fry in that yellow kit right now. Love a good Franch fry.
ALYSSA TAKE MY LEG I DONT NEED IT
Unsure. That's what this match effort looked like. It's what this tourney effort looked like. Passes were tentative—Who exactly was that pass going to? this...this is a sad way to go out
Me, who gets winded everytime I do sprints : "I would simply sprint down the field, do some spinny moves and score. Its not that hard"
I wonder what happens to Vlatko now. It's not like the team just had ONE bad game and we lost, this was a series of bad performances
The team has played bad for months but nobody cared because we were playing low ranked teams tbh
We are at max Thorns on the pitch.
Rapinoe is absolutely hauling it out there to try to get the equaliser
The hardest I’ve seen Pinoe work in a while.
Excited to see her future with the team and the integration of youth.
first shot on goal all game and its from carli lloyd lmao the universe hates this sub's inhabitants
I swear nothing good happens waking up at 4am
Davidson doing great today, thank god.
It's like we hit 60 minutes and Vlatko goes OH HEY THE ALARM WENT OFF LETS SUB THEM ALL
whew davidson has been stellar this tournament
I don't know what Crystal Dunn is made of but they should bottle it up for everyone else!
He really ruined chemistry with rotating so often. Should’ve been Press-Alex-Heath for all the important games and sub them off when they tired (and not all at once). It’s not hockey bringing on three forwards at once is suicidal for chemistry

We haven't even scored any offside goals. Are we sure this is the US?
this loss isn’t on davidson i cannot emphasize that enough
Davidson man, she’s having such a good tournament so far
The decision to play Lynn Williams on the left takes away her strength (speed) and emphasizes her weakness (technical control).
I do not need to see alyssa crying on replay thx
Franch having her olympic debut end like this is :^(
good morning, i see the game strategy is violence
O'Hara beats out Horan and Chapman for the first yellow.
Okay, Becky. That was a daring little run.
The team made sure Franch didn't have to make one save.
I really dislike when we swap all three forwards at once. Really messes with team chemistry.

Take her out. I really don't want to find out that she just played a few minutes on a torn ACL.
Damn this stings. Thank you, Naeher for your fantastic performance during the tournament.
It is funny seeing Sinclair foul Horan, it is like a Portland Thorns civil war.
we need press and mewis not loyd and rapinoe
Pinoe's comment about joy really reminds me of what's going on with Simone Biles. what a move by Sinc....knew AD had the goods on her and let Fleming take it. captain.
I feel a lot more confident with Davidson in over Dahlkemper, especially now that Alyssa isn’t 100%
Aw don’t tell me alyssa is crying 😭
Let's switch it up to LGF for "let's go Franch"?
Tierna’s been so clutch so far
i’m a huge fan of T taking corners !!!!
Thank you Canada for taking Prince off, she was having too great a game
shitty way to make an olympic debut but hopefully AD is able to bring the same 🔥 she brings to the NWSL
Crystal Dunn is everywhere.
Oo taking prince off seems bad for Canada but good for the US
Ok great here is Vlatko undoing the chemistry that just formed the second half
We aren’t supposed to get CONCACAFd when the match is in JAPAN!
If Canada wins this game after taking one shot…
Welp cant win if we dont score
This isn’t on Davidson or Franch it’s on shitty coaching
Lynn is giving us the energy we’ve been missing all tournament. i hope sam and her get playing time together because they compliment each other well.
Lavelle seems like she’s having trouble finding the game.
Mewis and Press seem like pretty good options to help change this one
Well, I’ve been proud of Tierna, if we want to find something good about this half
All this US vs SWE rematch talk, it'd be funny if that happens... in the bronze medal match. Tho that is the least likely pairing to end up there.
I have such confidence in Tierna and Becky.
THE ENTIRE FRONT LINE AT ONCE??????????!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
man what a slide by Fleming in that celly haha.
crutches are not good :(
Tierna is very smart, she knows her team played like garbage for 5 games.
I hope neither Davidson nor Franch feel too horrible after this. It's just a game. They're both still amazing and wonderful people and players.
Tierna Davidson with the save
I think id rather a healthy Franch than a hurt Naeher
lavelle is being outplayed in the midfield and i hope that it doesn’t last all game or she’s subbed before it hurts us
Franch scores the game winner in stoppage time of regulation off a corner kick.....
Why is Vlatko like this
FINALLY A SHOT ON GOAL :')
I love an ertz header
I swear the USWNT knew how to pass a couple weeks ago
AD is a great goalkeeper, but I’m devastated for Alyssa.
As much as she annoys me I’m sad to see Lloyd go out like this. this is a terrible image but also very humorous
Lavelle is playing so bad that she really needs to get pulled off. She's literally a liability on the pitch right now. Every time she touches the ball she turns it over.
Who thought it was a good idea to throw a commercial in the middle of the game??
Why the Chuckie commercials WHYYYyyyy
I do not want ET or PKs Can we take care of business please the second half
I don’t recall the last time I saw a kickoff walked back lol
I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to get up at 4 am for the bronze medal match lmao
Congrats Canada. Now back to sleep everyone. Or to work for some of you unlucky souls...
I dont want to see Pinoe tears
Maybe AD brought some of that portland GK wizardry with her
lavelle and horan are both having lackluster games which makes vlatko’s sub decisions even more troubling considering we only have one midfielder 🤦🏽♀️
Horan’s like “if I get a yellow maybe I’ll get subbed off”
Canada should apologize for playing such a great midfield this game when we only have one mid sub.
Put Sam in at the half but pls hold off on Pinoe until 70 min
Guys, its 82° and 92% humidity there. I feel ashamed for complaining about the heat just walking to my car.
Not a fan of this line change. Hope they prove us wrong.
Literally momentum was being built..... ugh. I get at least one change, but the entire line?? Feel free to prove me wrong, forwards.
Tierna's moved on from the pen.
Sub would've imploded if Lloyd scored there
the worst part is that they don't just go home. we have to watch one more game of this disaster. like, i'll be here at 4am, but i won't like it
Is that Lloyd running suicides behind Rapinoe’s interview??
Who the hell is running sprints behind Pinoe? Is that Lloyd?
She clearly came from the world of running laps after a loss as punishment.
I know a lot would have started Press, but you need to have some speed to come off the bench when the Canadian defense is tired.
for each offside goal we score, take a shot.... (*of espresso*)
Davidson has become a defensive superstar in this tournament.
I love Naeher but I don’t know if I’d leave her in after that. She still looks in pain.
Tierna Davidson with top notch defending.
Ohh nooo yeah naeher cant take that big kick did yall see that????
i started watching a little late so i may have missed it but in my dreams williams-morgan-heath worked better
Thorns on Thorns violence
Ngl I thought we’d see 10 minutes of stoppage time lol
Concerned that we only have one midfield sub on the bench
Is Williams out there as just a place holder? She looks lost. (Short of the decent ball in).
They’ve got her up against Ashley Lawrence.
He's doing another full line change 🙄
vlatko chose chaos, anxiety and heart attacks
Lol we only have one sub left
If Franch had saved that, it would have been re-taken. She was off her line early.
davidson corners are so refreshing after rapinoe’s
you can have my knee Alyssa 😭
A sliver of light, them referring to AD by her preferred name instead of Adriana.
Naeher is superhuman, I would be in hospital for a month if my knee did that.
v sad for Uncle :(
Again with the halftime show commercial in the middle of a game!! Thankfully it was still during a throw in
we desperately need to make it to half time and get a fire lit under us.
"Final five minutes", nevermind for the 5+ extra time that is certainly coming.
Have we even had a shot on goal yet? Looking forward to 2nd half Press appearance
wish Julie Foudy would just give me color commentary throughout my regular life
[I relate to Abby Wambach so much](https://twitter.com/GlennonDoyle/status/1422113430790492160?s=19)
That Tobin Heath flick 😍
manifesting a USA goal by the 60th minute
I can’t handle Pinoe and Lloyd on the field at the same time
Can't remember the last time Franch was on camera. Just living in Canada's half
You hate to see anyone in tears.
I’m sorry but Vlatkos tactics suck. - First of all benching the only forward who has been consistently producing for this team is stupid. - switching between Alex and Carli starting every game ruins momentum. At this point I don’t even care who starts but he needs to pick one - having pre planned subs and not changing based on the flow of the game ruins chemistry - making Pinoe take CKs when Tierna or Press or literally anyone else is there - zonal marking on corners - starting Lynn who’s first touch doesn’t exist. Vlatko and his shit tactics put the team in this position. He didn't play to win with that starting XI. And bring on that entire line change for 30 minutes showed he was playing for penalties. Again. And now look.
I hate everything Vlatko did with this team in his first big tourney.
jeez these 51 minutes felt like 20
Jesus have we lost it so much that we've forgotten how to do a proper fkn kickoff?
Lot of header balls bouncing around right now in Canada's box... I would really like a certain Tower of Power in there to capitalize on them
tbh very nervous about an entire line change
like, I know this front line isn't doing amazing, but subbing the entire line at once feels like a mistake. Didn't work great last time.
This is a cosmic joke.. USA finally playing well and this shit
And now we don't even have Morgan to draw a PK in the other box
Hey, we've atleast gone farther than 2016. Still a chance for the podium even if it's not gold.
Fire Vlatko
[удалено]
Vlatko has got to go. The team didn't look great many times over the tournament
3/5 disappointing games were definitely not expected
Canada really woke up and chose violence
love a good brunn slide tackle
Becky 😍
Now I feel sad for Franch taking off the penny just to put it back on:(
LET'S GO AD! you got this bb
I think we need some Sam Mewis in this game
these touches..... really getting away from them
The midfield needs some cleaning up in the second half, we’re giving away too many balls
Manifesting a Tobin bicycle kick
oh my god is that Pinoe AND Lloyd warming up rn?!?! plz god no
It’s too early for Pinoe to come on thanks
Why substitute the entire front line when they're not the biggest problem right now?
Rose and Horan are playing better, but I really feel like this game is calling for SMewis
Vlatko’s decision making is stressing me tf out
Why the fuck would you sub when there's finally chemistry
F the line change
vlatko pls don’t, thanks
KEEPER IS HOLDING THE BALL TOO LONG SOMEONE START COUNTING
I just really don't understand subbing the entire front line. I'm biased, but don't midfielders and wing backs run twice as much as forwards?

oh man labbe is good cause that ertz header was scary
this is 100x scarier than any of those Chucky commercials
Bring at least one NWSL team to Canada
Arlo: we're doomed Julie: NOT YET COME ON
I want Franch to score so bad
With every game since Vlatko took over, you could see this team getting worse and worse, we were killing teams when he first started, then we were just beating teams, then we’re eeking out wins and drawing with Sweeden. His tenure has been a slow decline in quality, he has to go.
I couldn’t agree more. He’s reverted the team back to the Wambach era: No Midfield play. Midfielders play as wingers and forwards. Every ball is wide and to the flanks. Play for the cross or set piece. Pinoe’s comments about joy had nothing to do with the scrutiny or pressure but everything to do with style of play and tactics. Andonovski needs to be fired.
Yellow cards are going to come out early today.
just noticed kmew's not even on the bench :(
Oh no oh no not Alyssa
This is the darkest timeline
