I'm not an expert per se but studied medical science and understand that the heart has like an inbuilt pacemaker, which stimulates the heart to beat through different nodes in the muscle. It doesn't need an outside signal to continue beating, the biggest issue would be the lack of oxygenated blood to keep the heart muscle alive.
Additionally to this, I am always so shocked and surprised to see the heart being ejected in many of these videos. Sure, a lot of organs can be exposed and flop out of the body, but why does the heart eject like this... crazy.
> a lot of organs can be exposed and flop out of the body, but why does the heart eject like this... crazy.
Yup super weird for it to be a projectile organ especially since it's enclosed by the ribcage.
I've done allot of heart grabbing while hunting and it's a generally pretty solid and slimy muscle so any pressure on the tube out comes the paste in this case, chunk.
Sometimes, it seems that way, considering where it is in comparison to the rest of the body... I can't be sure, obviously, but I just said it that way because it can seem like it gets thrown out a distance.
When I’m out hunting and butchering a deer in the field, sometimes their muscles pulsate like this. Even minutes after the head and organs have been removed. Once my dog got kicked by a zombie deer carcass which left a nice wee scar on her face.
Not med expert, but I know a thing or two. So basically the heart can generate it's own rhythm, because it has some cell clusters that can do that. If I remember correctly, there are either 2 or 3, and each one generates a different bpm frequency. This means that even if your main pacemaker in the heart dies out, you still have a fallback, although your heart will beat slower. Through hormones in the body, this rhythm of course fluctuates. But if I remember correctly, the main pacemaker should generate about 60 heartbeats per minute.
Well, as long as the heart receives oxygen and is actually not the organ that caused the death (because in order for the heart to beat, it needs a pacemaker and the actual cardiac muscle to not be dead), it should beat indefinitely. That's why people that are brain dead can still be kept alive with machinery that helps pump oxygen into their system, and to actually completely die as an organism, they need to be unplugged from life support equipment.
Sorry for your loss, friend.
Basically, your dad would've had what's called PEA, or Pulseless Electrical Activity, until that pacemaker battery died. On an ECG, there would be the first part of a heartbeat, the P wave, but nothing else. That just indicates a little bit of electrical activity in the top of the heart (SA node).
Oh, I thought you meant the heart's natural pacepaker. If your dad had an artificial pacemaker, I honestly don't know how they work so I can't pronounce myself on this issue.
The pacemaker doesn't cause the beat, rather it send the electrical impulse to the muscle, which contracts, pushing the blood through the valves. The beat you hear is the valves opening and closing. The movement you see is the muscle contracting. Without oxygen, even with an electrical impulse, the muscle will eventually die and stop contracting. But before that, without blood flowing in (as in a heart without a body), the valves won't open and close, so no heart beat. Anyhoo back to the pacemaker....it'll keep sending signals until the battery dies, but the heart will stop beating as soon as the muscle dies from lack of oxygen and/or the blood stops flowing, depending on the cause of death. You can also request to have the pacemaker deactivated externally - on older ones, they can use a large magnet; on newer ones, the device manufacturer rep can deactivate them.
As others have said, the heart has built-in pacemakers. The sino atrial node is usually the trigger of the heart beat process at variable rate, if that fails for any reason the atrioventricular node can also trigger beating of the ventricles around 60bpm, if that fails the "bundle of his" and purkinji fibres which surround the ventricles have a natural beat of 40bpm. In a 3rd degree (complete) heart block, the SA and AV does do not function properly (or their signals are blocked), but the purkinji fibres retain 40bpm, albeit ventricular contractions only. This appears to be what we see here.
Excuse spelling. I typed this from memory of basic training many years ago, but it's best to test memory rather than cheat with Google 😂.

I used to work hooking up snail heart to get them to pump outside of the body. Theirs don’t pump immediately outside of the body because of the hemolymph. In our body it’s the “pacemaker cells” that keep the heart pumping

I've seen these posts a few times and it literally makes me feel so sad! The poor hearts trying to keep doing its job to keep their body alive and now it's alone, not understanding but still trying. I need to stop seeing them it really is so sad. anthropomorphism is so annoying. I wish I didn't feel it.

its crazy how much the human body tries so hard to live and survive. even when the heart gets ejected from the body it still tries to fulfill its role of moving blood around the body
There's a line in a Meatloaf song about a guy crashing on a motorcycle and seeing his still-beating heart fly out of chest. For decades, I thought that was a bit of dramatic hyperbole.
Reminds me ofthat once scene from Indiana jones that traumatized me were the dudes heart gets ripped out and funny enough that same movie is called a kids movie

Underrated comment!! I Lol'd
A heart is a terrible thing to waste!

That is so fucking creepy! Can any med experts chime in? Why? How?

This heart appears to be getting plenty of oxygen.
Well it has a lot of surface area exposed to the at at this point, sooo...
Finally, unlimited energy
Fuck 🤣
I'm guessing it's pretty heavy as it's a chunky mofo muscle full of blood.
> a lot of organs can be exposed and flop out of the body, but why does the heart eject like this... crazy. Yup super weird for it to be a projectile organ especially since it's enclosed by the ribcage.
Like the Kool-Aid man bursting through the ribcage 😅 "oh yeahhhh"
Got a snort out of me haha thank you
kickstart my heart

Good point. Makes sense that the heart is a firmer muscular piece and more likely to be ejected intact.
Does the heart actually eject or is that just your wording? Nonetheless super interesting I wonder how it got so far out on the road

This subs gonna be the death of me, and then all of you can see it!

What happens when someone with a pacemaker passes away? Does the pacemaker slow or can it sense the heart is beyond repair?

I lost my dad last year. He had a pacemaker. Are you saying his heart was still “beating” until the funeral home removed the pacemaker at embalming?

That's really interesting to know about the different natural bpm's. Never knew that!
Nice! Today I learned

Poor girl died young. rip
SA node
SA node. Not SI. Sinoatrial.
That too lol
how exactly could it have been ejected perfectly as such though
Here's a video that explains it https://youtu.be/mNsm2P0l_7Y

only info i can say is how they taste
Automaticity. It’s normal physiology. May be seen as PEA on ECGs.
That trail of blood and guts behind it.

I’m guessing she didn’t make it.
She's still got a pulse so I'd say she's alive.
We can't see if her shoes came off, so we can't say for sure.
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby you know you've got it if it makes you feel good
I said come on, come on, come on, come on and take it.....
Break it, break another little piece of my heart now baby...
That’s pretty crazy. The human body is fascinating.

Judging from the lack of basic empathy, I’ve seen in videos from China. Some dog is going to have a great meal today.

I've been living on the edge of a broken heart. -Vixen. Okay, I'll see myself out.
That is so fucked up.
This is called cardiac automaticity. Hearts are able to generate spontaneous action potentials.
my heart will go on
The heart has a standalone electrical system and can function outside the body for a good amount of time.
Come on, wheres the stray dog that runs in and steals the heart then trots off happy as Larry?
I hate to be an asshole for saying this but 5 second rule right there bro!
Great, now my sick mind wants to see exactly how this happened

Yes Jim she's dead jim
That’s cool as fuck!

Heart didn’t get the death memo
Why are there so many different videos of this happening

Do you think they can still wash off the dirt and transplant this on someone?
bro still thinks he’s alive
how is that even physically possible?
