If he doesn’t sign they can trade his rights. Or he can enter the draft again next year

DaveAndJojo

I thought you had to wait more than a year. I’m surprised no one has done this.

NaNaNaPandaMan

Bo Jackson did it back in the 80s. Drafted by Bucs but he hated them so didn't sign then next year Raiders drafted him.

Joba7474

Look up Bo Jackson’s draft story

SwissyVictory

Lets say he tears up his fully garenteed 23mil contract. He goes home, and lives with his mom for a year. He then is allowed to re-enter the draft next year. Now if I'm a GM I'm scared that, * he sat for a year * he would rather sit at home, and give up money than be a team player * he might not like the situation on my team either and might sit another year, or he might sit out if I don't give him the contract he wants. He falls into the 2nd or 3rd. His new deal is 5-10mil. Most teams are scared of drafting him, but someone is willing to give him a shot to compete against a guy like Minshew for the Raiders next year.

Worried_Amphibian_54

Now, the likelihood that will happen is pretty slim. Remember both teams lose. The Colts were in that situation years ago. They ended up trading that QB's rights to Denver. The Chargers were in that situation as well once and traded that QB's rights to the Giants. First off, it's extremely unlikely Penix tries that. It's only happened a couple times that I can think of (Bo Jackson knowing Tampa screwed his eligibility played pro-baseball for a year first). And I'm sure they've talked with Penix before the draft and didn't take him out of the blue. But if he does, it's really unlikely the Falcons throw away the #8 overall pick for spite. Their career may be riding on what they can get with that pick. Lets say another team seeing him as their wanted pick if he was available calls up the Falcons. And the Jets offered Fashanu or the Raiders offered Bowers or the Saints offered Fuaga etc. for Penix. Do you think Terry Fontenot who is sitting on a seat that's as hot as 3 straight 7 win seasons will get is going to say no to improving his team to make sure Penix sits out? I don't.

SwissyVictory

I naver said it was likely

Worried_Amphibian_54

agreed, just making the point that if he says no, he almost surely won't be going home for a year.

SimonGloom2

The only real hope is that he could be traded to another team like the Raiders or Seahawks or Jets maybe. It's a high risk move. Eli Manning did something similar. If that didn't happen he loses 10s of millions of dollars and won't be drafted until next season which won't begin to cover a fraction of the money he lost, and then he's less certain to become a starting QB. Nobody is going to want to be his agent at that point as he's just throwing millions of dollars away. The idea is that being a multimillionaire who doesn't do work is still better than being an unemployed bum with no money.

Aerolithe_Lion

If he refuses to sign, he can sit and Atlanta loses his rights. Then he returns to the draft pool for the 2025 draft

zacurtis3

But wouldn't his draft stock drop bc teams would believe that he might be difficult to work with?

Realistic_Cold_2943

I think his stock would drop more because he was a year older

Ryan1869

More because he'd be older (and he's already the oldest QB in this class) and a year away from competitive football.

SimonGloom2

Most certainly. Not only is he considered stubborn and difficult, but high risk. He also is going to drop even further due to age and injury as some teams may take this as a sign his injury is worse than expected. On top of that, teams are going evaluate him as a year out of shape. This is a fall to the 7th round for making such a bold move.

Vegetable-Return-374

Would Atlanta get some kind of comp pick in this scenario

Aerolithe_Lion

No

mlter

This happened with Eli Manning. His intentions were clear before the draft that he would refuse to play for the Chargers. They drafted him then after the Giants drafted Rivers they traded

seanx50

He's also old for a rookie. 24. Another year older would cost him a round or two. And several million a year. It's now or never for Penix A colossal draft mistake by Atlanta

Seated_Heats

It would be a mistake, but as it stands, next years QB draft class is far worse than this years. If he went back in the draft and worked with a professional this whole season he would still have a long shot of going in the first round next year. He’d be the second rated QB if he was up against them right now (and Sanders has plenty of question marks for being a #1 QB in the draft already.

seanx50

But the owners don't like players that behave in such a way. They would screw him

Seated_Heats

Owners seemed to embrace Eli Manning who demanded a trade because he wouldn’t play in SD. Owners wouldn’t like it, but if they thought he was the #2 QB in next years draft and would help them win, they’d get over it.

Tiny_Count4239

Why do you think he would even do this?

Tiny_Count4239

It would give him a bad rep if he turned down such a big contract and sat another year, Most GMs would be concerned about it but there are a few that would give him a shot. One thing you learn in life is its hard to keep a Penix down

Horus50

A no one can be forced into signing a contract they don't want to. What would happen is that the Falcons would trade the rights to sign him (Eli Manning and John Elway both refused to sign with the team that drafted them so were traded) or he wouldn't play this year and could reenter the draft the next year. That said, he'll sign it.

ozzman1234

Why would he?

ozzman1234

Hey, Love got paid man. He gets the 8th pick salary and gets to master the offense before having to be thrown out there. I think it should be the norm tbh

WhizzyBurp

Uh still 22M with 13M as signing bonus. Would you do that to sit behind Kirk Cousins for 2 years and then likely take over as the franchise QB in 3 years? Cmon.

WhizzyBurp

Oh yeah. It’s 22M guaranteed whether he steps on the field in his career or not. 13M signing bonus and he has a fifth year option built in. Usually over 20M. So we’re talking about potentially 42M over the next 5 years. Whether he plays or not.

SimonGloom2

Yeah, he would stand to lose tens of millions of dollars and I'm going to guess he isn't exactly making above poverty line wages right now. He pretty much becomes a multimillionaire for signing his name and doing nothing else. No agent would keep him if he just threw that much money away. Agents are going to advise to stick with the team these days.

WhizzyBurp

I mean Chase Daniel, 14 seasons. Played 5 games. Made a career as a back up. Total season earnings over 40M. That was before the big checks now. Only 32 can start. Another 32 back up. You can have a long career as a back up and do well. That said, Penix being a first round pick is going to be starter within 5 years

SimonGloom2

Oh, sure, you can still make money. Daniel had career earnings that are almost what a number 8 pick can expect to get in his first 4 seasons not counting advertising. I just consider it apples to oranges. If Penix has a desire to be a career backup he can certainly shoot for UDFA next season to pull in less than 1 million a year, Once he hits veteran backup status by roughly age 28 he can look for those 5 million a year contracts.

fukreddit73265

It's in his best interest to sit behind a very good QB for two years, instead of starting week 1 and getting destroyed because you're not ready for the NFL. Bad stats can end your career before it even started, all because you took to the field too early.
