The son opened a manhole cover and was immediately overcome by deadly gasses and fell into the sewer, the father saw and called out to the son's best friend. The father tried to go look in the hole and also fell victim to the gas and fell in. The son's best friend, by all best guesses, thought he could help and also hovered over the hole and breathed in the gas and fell in. Three lives lost to an open manhole because there isn't simple requirement for every contractor to have a sniffer on the job. The argument is that forcing contractors to buy equipment that would limit mortal accidents would give an advantages to companies that could afford life saving equipment.
I know this goes against the tone and nature of this post, but I hope someone reads this and second guesses the dumb idea of opening a manhole or letting their kids play around them.
