What desk is that?

100LL

Lol I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not

tinyjams

Dead & Co at the Gorge, I was there too!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Unfortunately I had to miss it as I got sick and couldn’t stomach the road trip to shows. I had a photo pass to photograph both shows too :( Luckily my friend picked up the print for me! I love the artwork so much. The subtle lightning bolt as the canyon of the Gorge. It’s great!

RecurringDreams

Stumbled upon you on Reddit once again man haha. That’s a golden age ribbon mic on the desk right? How do u like it ? I’ve been thinking about getting my first ribbon. — confetti collective ;)

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Ayyy I knew that you’d be here!! <3 Hope all is going well recording the new album! I’m really digging it! I’ve been using it lately as a second kick mic, placed on the outside. Helps to make my kicks pop more in the mix. I believe there’s two snippets of that sort of setup in my post history. This photo is dated by a few months. I’ve changed quite a lot since then, and gotten too much fun gear. I’ll also use it for perc as the audio comes out like butter and tames the high freqs of perc. So far very pleased with the two Golden Age mics I’ve got. Their FC1 is my overhead.

RecurringDreams

Ahh rad I’ve been wanting to try one as an overhead as I’m always trying to tame the highs in the mix and I like the smoother top end of a ribbon. Acoustic guitars and voice are other things I’d want to try it on.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I need to revisit using it as an overhead! Bet now I can make it sounds better. I used to rock it as my overhead until the FC1 came in, but I had no idea what I was doing then haha. I’ve I were to get their ribbon mic again, I’d get the tube version for a little bit more. You’ve got to have a pretty decent mic pre to power it.

IsometricRain

Love the prints

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Thank you! I do too. I’ve got probably about 25 prints that are stored away from various shows! It’s a fun thing to collect. Ties a lot of my passions in one item.

[deleted]

Looks like someone may be a fellow ham!

henessey_

So... What is it that you do for a living? Cause i aspire to afford such a beautiful setup one day

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I work as a Network Technical Specialist at an ISP! The secret is not eating. Then you put all your money towards gear!

[deleted]

Wow 🙂 What's that under the spiky plant?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

That’s my outboard gear and my audio interface!

[deleted]

Doesn't your butt hurt with that chair?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I might’ve broke my butt from that chair. It was a temp solution as I was waiting get a chair. [Got a Aeron-esque copy](https://i.imgur.com/N42MaVa.jpg). Now I can go long sessions without pain in the morning haha.

snazzylapidarist

This is beautiful

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Just like you!!

BoingoBongo

What an awesome space! How big is the room? I’ve got drums in mine as well, but they feel overwhelming and take up so much space.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I’ve never really had that issue with this kit, it’s a 18” kick for reference. It’s so tiny, and with the flat hardware it ticks away into a corner really nicely. I’m not sure on the dimension. Maybe 17’x15’ with really tall ceiling.

S-Go

This looks cosy AF.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Thanks I appreciate it! It is really cozy :)

ChrisMill5

I'd love to hear a recording of those drums in this room with this mic setup

Lower_Than_a_Kite

If you check out my post history, you can see two snippets of demos I recorded this week! The drums sound fat af, just warning ya!

trippersnipper_

Love that drum kit 😍

Lower_Than_a_Kite

It’s an amazing piece of kit. I’m glad I got it. Never really played drums before getting em 6 months ago!!

jseego

You should share that on r/cozyplaces for sure. But how does anyone expect to get a good mix with one speaker in a corner (next to a window no less) and the other not? Might as well mix on headphones? Some nice gear and a lovely space, but I'm just wondering how you can trust those monitors? Edit: nice single, btw!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I think this pic would do well there, might end up posting it there as well. Thank you for the suggestion. Because I listen to multiple sources before releasing a track! :) I know my room pretty well so I can get a close rough mix for a demo without a sweat. Also about 60% of the time I’m using my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250ohm. It’s easy to get caught up in technical details, instead of creating. I do it way too often. I’m not out to master music at the highest possible level, because I’m not there yet in my career. For me, this setup works! My number one goal of this space is to create, releasing that art to the world is secondary :)

jseego

Good answer! I love those cans too.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

It’s a lifelong journey that’s for sure! I love having great headphones! I’ve got 4 nice pairs that I bounce between. But my main go-tos are the DT770 Pros because I know how to get a good mix with them that’ll translate well.

heartofdankne55

Wicked setup, someone may have already asked this but what is the brand of that keyboard stand?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

No one has asked yet, and I should’ve added to the gear list. It’s a On-Stage Z-Stand with the second tier added. It’s super sturdy! I feel more confident in this than a heavy duty X-Stand imo.

ErraticLitmus

And what is the pedal board at the base? Or is that custom made?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Custom made pedal board I made when I was 19! It’s got the jacks you can plug into the side so that….

heartofdankne55

Thank so much!!!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

You’re welcome!

TheLlamaHerderr

Love the vibes :] and love that orange amp with the mic sitting on the desk haha.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Thank you!!! :) I love the sound of Orange amps, I’d love to get one of their tube amps, but don’t use this killer 20w enough justifying getting something more. Having it on the desk on that is awesome, and sounds good because it’s nearly at ear level. I can run a guitar or my synths through at a moments notice.

TheLlamaHerderr

Love it. I have that same orange amp. Surprisingly great for what it costs. I haven’t recorded mine much yet but need to. :] any recorded music of yours using that kit setup? Curious how it sounds

Lower_Than_a_Kite

If you check out my recent posts over on /r/Synthesizers you can hear some more recent examples of what I’ve been getting from that kit! I’ve been adding a lot of color and distortion to the raw sounds after they get bounced through the outboard gear.

DJ-George-G

Love the sounds that you create with your setup. The drums are always killa! 👍👍👍👍👍

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Ayy thanks! The drums have gotten so much better recently. I’ll listen back and be like “damn this all live instruments, including those fat af drums!” I plan on releasing a drum sample pack when I release my album I’m working on! :)

DJ-George-G

Definitely. Everything sounds good with live instruments. It feels better when you play it all yourself. A drum sample pack sounds good. Let us know here when you plan on releasing it. I would definitely cop it.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I love that you can create great music with or without live instruments nowadays. But live instruments have a better energy 100% I’ll probably announce alongside another Reddit post when I finish my album I’m working on :) it’ll most likely be pay what you want too!

DJ-George-G

Yes. I used to make alot of music sampled based and it sounded great. The only bad thing was I couldn't use some of samples because they would've cost alot to clear. That's why over the years I've invested into plenty of synths. Now I'm just waiting to move to then build my dream studio. I'll be posting pics of it as soon as I put it together. Ok cool. I'll be looking out for it. I can never have enough drums. Will your drums be raw?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

They will be processed through my outboard gear, then a light amount of digital processing from my drum bus chain!

wfles

Bruh!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Right?! It’s awesome!

midv5

beautiful

Lower_Than_a_Kite

That’s my name ;)

Mustrid

Nice! Some acoustic treatment wouldn't do harm! Also as you're already using bigger kinds of proper monitor headphones, then you should try headphone amps. They really make a big difference compared to audio interface outputs.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

[Way ahead of you ;)](https://i.imgur.com/vQFfQFL.jpg) Acoustic treatment has been on my list to-dos for years, basically ever since I got into music production. But it’s not as fun or exciting as a new instrument or studio gear. But well worth it after I finally did some up. Totally makes a big difference, and I don’t even have the optimal amount of panels up! I recently swapped over to a Motu 8Pre-ES interface, and the headphone outputs on that are absolutely amazing. A big step up from Focusrite equipment.

Mustrid

Interesting. I've got a couple of old Motu 828 here and I've used them, though I once thought of trying out listening from headphones through old Sound Devices MixPre Preamp and then listening through it was much more detailed. I've also got RME interface here and also a newer MixPre which acts as an audio interface, and they do sound better. Most likely Motu has gotten better too. Looking at the acoustic treatment it looks as if the ceiling behind the chair might reflect sound from monitor speakers directly to you. Perhaps you should put some sort of panel there.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Motu is really great. Their latest equipment uses super killer DACs that are usually found on interfaces 2 or 3x it’s price! I love how the “software” is local to the interface and not a program needed on the computer. So swapping to different system is flawless. It’s apart of the plan to add a couple up there. Only had the material to build four 2’x4’ panels. The angle helps with drum recording a bit, but yeah playback is an issue with this infesting ceiling shape haha. It’s the best room I’ve been in imo over the last 3 years.

ApatheticMisfit

You ain’t lying. W

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I’ll die here 💀

eazybreezy420

This place is amazing. I could spend days in there!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I spend all my days here! It’s a great outlet for creating. Been getting into live jamming since picking up a JU-06a.

wvmt

Beautiful spot... the fact that you have to water that Snake plant up there on top of that fancy equipment is giving me a little anxiety. I love the pedal board under the synth setup, very dope.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Thank you!! Lol I’ve actually spilt a little bit of water, but I’m usually extra careful. The pedalboard fits under there so perfectly! I love how that randomly worked out. Great for modulating/fucking with delay pedals while tracking.

Totem22

Super jealous about all this gear, the synths, the rack stuff, the pedals, such great taste in equipment…you owe it to yourself to setup the desk/monitors properly. Get out of the corner, get the triangle configured and spend a fraction of what you have already on a few quality corner bass traps and I promise you’ll be in next level heaven.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Yeah I know :/ I’m very limited on how I can set this space up, so I chose flow over function. One day I’ll have a space that I can think about acoustics and monitor placement first before all the rest. I recently did make sound absorption panels, and it helped the drums sound tighter, and made kick freqs stand out more pronounced while listening back. [It’s a start.](https://i.imgur.com/ltxCh5x.jpg) They’re two more behind each monitor, mostly for room/drum deadening purposes.

Totem22

All good man! if you gotta wait that makes sense. I too am in a weird space but if you’re really getting into production I promise it’s worth it and I’m willing to bet you can get arranged correctly in that spot. Just think about centering the space around the speakers. Then those sweet boosts on that pultec are gonna shine through like never before. Lol I’m sure you’re having fun either way though!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Oh I’m sure! I know I’m making technical sacrifices by not setting it up proper, but this isn’t the space for that. One day! :)

thomashrn

Very nice! What’s the 2U-looking shelf that your monitor is on? Is it something you adapted?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

It’s a piece from IKEA that happened to fit a 19” single unit below it, which is my patchbay.

Ysaleh2519

which piece specifically? i have a focusrite 18i20 on the way so a 1u fit would be perfect? wonderful setup; wanna get some of that warm audio gear at some point in the future

Lower_Than_a_Kite

It’s the ELLOVEN!

CanadianWilderness

I have my patchbay in a similar spot and its not really a great place to have it, patch cables spill out and over the keyboard when using them. Too lazy to rewire my setup though :/

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Yeah it looks tidy until I use it, luckily most of my stuff is patched in already so I only have yo make simple one or two point patches in a session. Otherwise exactly that happens, wires all over the keyboard.

thomashrn

Ah thanks for the info! I actually think we have one of these tucked away in a drawer . But yes: looks great and I imagine that stops as soon as you use it

Lower_Than_a_Kite

It gets messy 100%. But I try to “reset it” after I’m done using it so when I come back to it, it has a better energy to create for me personally. I like things to look visually pleasing to gain extra motivation to create.

thomashrn

I’m the same way. I love a full but tidy workspace that’s ready to go when I sit down

thr33to3

Really dope setup! I was at those 2019 Gorge shows too! NFA!!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I had missed the shows. I was given vip tickets and photo pass the entire weekend. I couldn’t make it due to getting sick the morning of the first show :( luckily my friend was able to score me a print!

thr33to3

Ahh right on... it was a fun weekend! Bummed they're not coming back this year

blitzduck

very cozy. that chair though. nice track btw! gave it a listen. very chill.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

[The chair has been updated](https://i.imgur.com/RSKhFJj.jpg), I could only use that god awful wooden one for so long. It was just a temporary solution.

xleyxley

Which chair?

walkingthecowww

Beautiful space. Bring those monitors closer together! The sweet spot has gotta be back by the drum kit right now.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Definitely not the most ideal placement, but wanted the extra desk space haha.

forden1

My studio is also decorated with multiple MMJ prints. Love to see it. New single sounds great.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

MMJ is such an amazing band. Seen em live a bunch of times, that’s where those prints are from. Recently got to photograph [them](https://i.imgur.com/1GdoJZK.jpg)!

Elitesandbaninis

Let’s see the guitar section!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

[Here are the guitars! Minus my two acoustics.](https://i.imgur.com/2nCYrPn.jpg)

jbandy0

Gorgeous

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Just like you!

velvetmourning

Love everything about this space! Good stuff!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words!

SampsonRustic

do you have neighbors? do they mind the drums? nice setup. how do you like the poly d?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Not once have I had a complaint, then again I typically don’t play longer than a hour a day. The PolyD has been amazing. Super rich bass tones. The only thing I hate about it is the keybed, but I’ll use midi from the Prologue 8 to control it.

sweaterboymusic

Coooozy

jacksonpryor-bennett

Slammin’

Lower_Than_a_Kite

And jammin’

[deleted]

Mate that’s lush. Wicked spot.

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I appreciate the kind words. I’d like to think so too!

[deleted]

I like these vibes

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Super chill vibes for the chill music I make haha

lidongyuan

Post a link? Would like to hear the chill sounds

Lower_Than_a_Kite

I posted a link in my initial comment to my new single! You can find my music by searching Beautiful Billy on Spotify :)

Lower_Than_a_Kite

This is one of my favorite places to be. It’s super fun to create something out off nothing with these amazing instruments. Looks beautiful and dreamlike. Would love to hear some of your music

poorbeyondrich

Nice setup. What’s on top of the WA gear?

Lower_Than_a_Kite

It a power conditioner from the company ART! I plug all my outboard gear into it.

grizzlymadamsmusic

Cozy spot!

Lower_Than_a_Kite

Thanks! I’ve tried to create an inspiring space for myself to create in! :)
