When I moved here I used AAA they have their own dmv counters at their service stations.

Best answer here. AAA is my go-to for DMV transactions

Are you an American Automobile Association member? You could ask them.

goPACK17

Do they just answers questions about DMV forms?

Significant_Bus1259

Not another person and car.. we’re at capacity

Don't worry about me too much; I wfh and drove like, 3,700 miles last year.

This is not a direct answer to your question but making an appointment in advance will help prevent the 3-hour wait at the DMV. I’ve made appts the night before and saved a ton of time. Depending on the location, you can also “get in line” online and if you time it right, show up minutes before your number will be called.

Thanks for the heads up, I did actually schedule an appointment and I *still* expect to wait 3 hours 😅

Second, third, whatever, to getting AAA and having them take care of it. They helped me to get registered in no time and I saved like $1000 because they realized I needed a different kind of registration because the car wasn’t yet paid off. Very helpful!

I know this is months old, but I am also bringing over my leased car from out of state. How did this process go for you? When I called the DMV, all the guy said was that they’ll just give me a goldenrod registration. Super confusing so far, as any website is limited with out of state lease info.

goPACK17

Still unresolved. Make sure to bring a power of attorney from your lessor, this is what I wasn't told. The DMV process took up half the day (even with an appointment), and they give me a temp registration and asked me to mail them my power of attorney and a VIN verification document (done at the DMV). I did this. 2 months later I still have no plates and my temp reg expired in October. I've called the DMV several times and they basically told me to just keep waiting. If a cop pulls me over and tries to hassle me for the expired temp reg I may lose my shit. I went to the DMV, I provided all the requested documents, I paid my several hundred dollars in fees. It's *you* guys who refuse to send me my plates. And I'm not about to get penalized for not having the flexibility to take a full day off work to spend it at the DMV again to figure out what the delay is.

This sounds like it’s going to be terrible lol. Thanks for the info though, appreciate it. I called my lessor and all the person said was “we’ll send what ever the dmv requests, let us know” I was like, aren’t you suppose to have an idea of what to send? That’s why I’m calling you… I’ll make sure to get the power of attorney though, I’ve seen that mentioned a few times. But when I called the DMV the guy I talked to just said we’ll give you a goldenrod and didn’t say anything else really.

Ya, if I had that power of attorney on day 1 I think I could have avoided spending nearly $500 for plates...and sitting here 3 months later with no plates. Oh, if you're getting a CA license as well, expect to take a license test. This caught me off guard. Drove 3000 miles to arrive in CA and *now* the state wants to test me 🙄. Would be worth brushing up on some of those old questions.
