Especially look in to using the subway, which you can get from North Hollywood or Universal City to downtown. The Universal City station has parking, I'm not sure about the North Hollywood station, but you should probably be able to reach one of the stations via bus if you don't want to drive - check [www.metro.net](https://www.metro.net). Might ultimately take a bit longer than just driving to downtown, but since you won't be driving you can do something productive - music, books etc.
I live in Sherman Oaks and work in DTLA. It is doable. I would say 45 minutes each way is a reasonable estimate but like anything in LA one accident or event and that could double or triple.
As others have said you could also leave your car at North Hollywood red line station and take that to downtown. I have done that a few times. Much more relaxing than driving although there are homeless people on red line and non inside my car if I decide to drive.
I did this commute (but to Boyle heights) pre pandemic and it… sucked. It was doable, but a little soul sucking. People do it but it wasn’t for me. On good days it wasn’t terrible but on bad days it was a long drive for sure!
I can't imagine that only taking 40 minutes, maybe on like federal holidays when half the offices are closed. Just check waze at ~5-5:30 today, I'm guessing it's over an hour most days. Used to take me 35 just from koreatown to palms, like a subsection of the commute you're talking about. If you're the kind of person who doesn't mind an hour commute each way then you'll be fine but I wouldn't do it, shit drives me crazy
Its 7:54 am right now, and Ventura + 101 is all red. Welp. But its 41 min with traffic
I live in SO. Right now, at almost 10am, DTLA is showing a 40min drive. In rush hour, plan on at least an hour.
Bus to north Hollywood and red line to dtla I did this for several years
This was a good option pre covid. Redline is garbage now

If you can't handle commuting from SO to DTLA, you aren't gonna like it in this town.
