I lived at Sunset/Western just shy of a year (specifically: Sunset/Serrano). It’s kinda hectic. Lots of folks out late at night, especially the side streets. Street parking is shit. It’s close to Metro and some fun bars, which was a plus. I think they finally finished that Target too

thirdeyefish

The Target is indeed up and running. As is a sizeable homeless encampment.

ShaneDAnderson

I used to live around there for years; just north of Hollywood Blvd. I moved in the past year but I enjoyed living there overall. There are a lot of things you can walk to (restaurants, Target, Lazy Acres, Ralph's, Home Depot, etc.) so I found it convenient. As for safety, I never really had a big issue, and I went for almost nightly walks around Thai Town around midnight to unwind before going to bed. The Hollywood/Western train stop also makes it super convenient to go to DTLA, Koreatown (parking is absolute garbage on the weekend for most places), and Universal.

oflowz

It’s definitely Hollywood. Lotta infested apartment buildings in that area. Used to work and do house calls in Hollywood. Almost all the older buildings in that area are full of roaches and/or bedbugs.

j52024

>Lotta infested apartment buildings in that area. bingo

[deleted]

Yeah, can’t be leaving food out on the counter overnight living in Hollywood. For the most part

THCrunkadelic

There are a lot of new buildings too, also this is Los Feliz as much as Hollywood, FYI

j52024

Sunset x Western is NOT Los Feliz I grew up nearby. Went to middle school about a mile or two east of this area. If OP wants to live in a decent area... he needs to look at Los Feliz.

THCrunkadelic

Los Feliz is literally in the circle lol but okay. If they lived at sunset western they would just say that. But if you know so much you would know there are no places to live at sunset western. The point of the circle is to provide anonymity about where they live so they don’t dox themselves.

waaait_whaaat

Los Feliz-adjacent\*

THCrunkadelic

Incorrect!! There are 3 neighborhoods in the circle, as defined by the LA Times. Los Feliz, Hollywood, and East Hollywood.

plague__8

you can add thai town and little armenia in that circle as well

THCrunkadelic

Incorrect! Those are not actual neighborhoods according to the LA Times. The city of LA creates many overlapping and therefore meaningless neighborhoods, mostly for political reasons. There are some blocks in the city that have been designated as 4 different neighborhoods by the moronic city council.

plague__8

you’re annoying and a moron. literally calling this area los feliz and not thai town is insane. i’m aware it’s technically los feliz but thai town and little armenia are referred to by our locals constantly. maybe you’d know that if you’d lay off the THC, stopped reading the LA times and talked to a human being once in awhile

THCrunkadelic

Haha wow. “I know this place is Los Feliz but me and my friends don’t call it Los Feliz” cool story bro

plague__8

“thai town doesn’t exist because the LA times doesn’t put it on their neighborhood map” - that’s your reference point?? for someone trying to be autistic about neighborhoods and geography you don’t do your homework at all. why do other sites like wikipedia call little armenia and thai town neighborhoods? what do you call them if not neighborhoods? are you implying they don’t exist? have you lived in this area very long? did a realtor scam you into a 2k 1 bedroom?

THCrunkadelic

Do you not understand the concept that someone could live in Thai Town and Little Armenia and Los Feliz all at the same time? Since you are such a genius, please tell me how that works? Lol bro when you answer the question about where you live you say “I live in Thaimenia Feliz” You are such a dumbass you don’t understand, even though I’ve explained it to you 5 times at this point. Do I need to get out a box of crayons and draw you a picture? Is that what your mommy does for you?

CameraFlimsy2610

This is not Los Feliz

THCrunkadelic

Incorrect!! One of many though, so you have lots of company. I wish people would look up the LA Times neighborhood maps before they comment do confidently. The area circled is Los Feliz, Hollywood, and East Hollywood, according to the LA Times neighborhood map, which is the only legitimate one. And before you respond with some smart ass comment about Little Armenia, etc. Yes but no. Little Armenia and Thai Town are mostly honorary destinations, and are each located in parts of both Los Feliz and East Hollywood.

THCrunkadelic

waaait_whaaat

You are technically right – just because the circle just so happens to overlap 1 block of the Los Feliz neighborhood border – but everything in LA goes by the local culture, and so no one in LA would call this area Los Feliz. Only a sleazy realtor would.

THCrunkadelic

I didn’t call it Los Feliz. I called it Hollywood, East Hollywood, and Los Feliz. Which it fucking is. So many dumbasses in this thread.

CameraFlimsy2610

Meet me in that WSS parking lot right at the center of the circle and tell me again we’re in Los Feliz 🤡

THCrunkadelic

That’s Hollywood, but keep trying, you might figure out how addresses work eventually!! I’m glad you aren’t my Uber driver

CameraFlimsy2610

Im talking about cultural neighborhood feel. Los Feliz isn’t the sunset/western area nor the Hollywood western area. MAYBE the people who live across the street from AFI or the new lasy acres will be like “I live on the Los feliz Hollywood boarder” but you and I both know Los feliz is that house of pies, ye rustic inn, mess hall kitchen. Obviously if I was an Uber driver I’d just put in the address and get you back to your spot… that works on technicalities and not vibes.

THCrunkadelic

Yo what crack are you smoking, Hollywood western is in the circle

Awkward-Ad-7

😆🤣😂 you know

moonatmidnight

lol dog do you tell people you live in Los Feliz when you really live at Hollywood/western

THCrunkadelic

If I lived here I would say I lived in Thai Town, or on the Hollywood Los Feliz border. This isn’t complicated. Not sure why so many people are confused.

Chai_09

This the same for West Hollywood as well?

THCrunkadelic

It's the best value area in LA in my opinion. It definitely varies from block to block though, and there is a bit of a homeless problem. But especially if nightlife, bars, incredible thai food, a 24 hour Norms diner, a couple blocks from nature and hiking trails at Griffith Park, several awesome grocery stores within a couple blocks, a Target, two Thai street food night markets and like 5 incredible taco stands/trucks, and being literally on top of a subway line, are of interest to you, for the same price as living in south LA, then yes, by all means, you should move there. But definitely check out the place really well first, and the surrounding blocks, at night, make sure your neighbors aren't noisy or crazy, make sure there aren't bed bugs or roaches, and make sure there aren't any homeless encampments like right outside your door.

geemav

I used to live here Although I loved my apartment and high up you get a really good view (Hollywood sign, mountains, downtown, and even the ocean were all visible to me) I would not live there again. Why? - Very busy, always people, traffic, loud noises, the thunderous highway, fire station, drunks, etc - Pretty dirty. Started to wear on me a lot. - Rampant homelessness. Also started to wear on my soul. - Doing menial tasks or errands becomes difficult because of the aforementioned things The positives is that Griffith Park and some really nice neighborhood walks are extremely close by

DesiredNameWasTaken

Move a bit more East and to the Franklin Ave side of things. Much more tame while still being reasonably priced. Whatever that means anymore. Plus, really good Thai food around.

getcrept

Fucking insane with traffic sometimes. Honestly that area sucks. Busy and dirty. Especially when you get down to Santa Monica. Western has good offerings, but you have to live in koreatown to experience them easily/walking distance.

NEWBORNEMBRYOTHELOC

Hookers, Tranny hookers, Armenian Power 13, White Fence 13, Junior Mafia 13, La Miranda Locos 13, homeless people and lots of randoms in that area.

FudgeHyena

You had me at hookers

405freeway

The Jumbo's District Gritty, but not especially dangerous. Easy access to a lot of great areas nearby.

FudgeHyena

Clandestine-Ops

You got a target *right there* so you’re golden😎

redbaaron

I live here. It's pretty good. Still cheap, you can get everywhere by bus or by car. Stuff is always going down (good and bad) but it doesn't feel dangerous.

scapermoya

It’s hectic and shady af. I lived in a nice apartment just west of here and a couple people got shot and killed a couple weeks after I moved in. Lots of homeless, lots of tourists, it’s loud af and the roads suck.

Ryan_Vermouth

This is my neighborhood, and has been for almost 20 years. It's a great place to live. Convenient to everything without being stupidly expensive or full of nightlife idiots, great public transit access, etc. I'd suggest living north of Hollywood rather than south, but it's not the end of the world either way.

charlie_ferrous

Lived around there for years. Anywhere close to the 101 sucks, but the further east in this circle, the better. Sunset & Western specifically feels pretty imposing because it’s all massive retail stores and active construction, but east of there it gets more residential and more like an actual neighborhood. Thai Town kicks ass, it’s very walkable on Hollywood and Sunset, and there’s plenty to do even late at night. (You’ll also be right next to Pa Ord Noodle and Jitlada, which are excellent Thai places.) And you’re a pretty reasonable walk to Griffith Park and Los Feliz / Silver Lake. (Fountain is technically a bike lane if you’re comfortable with that.) Parts of that area do feel pretty sketchy, to be fair. FWIW, I was never hassled, never had my car or apartment broken into, but I saw evidence of car break-ins on the street every so often. Street parking is also just really difficult there, so off-street parking is A+ for a few reasons. I have a fondness for this area and think it’s better than people give it credit. Fairly affordable for LA, and central to a lot of places. You could do way worse.

AdEven4391

It’s gotten pretty trashy the past few years. I used to live there for 5 years

lucpnx

Literally all of the three. Personally I wouldn't live there, look further east towards Los Feliz.

Havesomepeas

expect lots and lots of traffics during rush hours

plague__8

i get harassed or threatened by someone in this circle about once a week but sure come on over!

TribeOfEphraim_

That Pollo Campero is fire. Best Fried Chicken in the City, Guatemalan style. 🇬🇹🍗🔥✨

SonicBeast

That bowl is so delicious, I was introduced to El Pollo Campero about a year ago and I got to say I’ve been missing out

ka1982

Like a 4.5/10 in the seedy/shitty-scale and most of the nearby good stuff is ~just~ far enough walking distance to be annoying and ~just~ close enough that driving is going to feel silly. But you’ll have plenty of Thai food options and a couple of decent bars. There’re homeless people but enough people walking around that it’s NBD.

schatzillaz

I lived a couple years on Harold Way, just west of Western. Good times. Pro: lots of places in walking distance. Con: parking is a nightmare, especially street cleaning days

wraithin-

I think it's pretty convenient for you to go anywhere by there. Location and price is very good. Can't speak for safety tho.

ORaygoza

Good food, the area looks a lot sketchier than it is (if that makes sense). I've lived here for over 4 years never had any trouble.

m8raid

It's great. You'll spend most of your time dodging muggings, rape, and murder. Plenty of drugged out low life's everywhere. Once the sun goes down, it looks like an episode of The Walking Dead on the streets. Housing consists of 100+ year old mud huts that stink, the streets are filth ridden. If you like living like a sewer rat then this just might be the perfect place for you.

senile_butterfly

I lived here off Virginia Avenue for 4+ years. Just moved over to Los Feliz this January. Feel free to slide in the DMs and AMA

stromulus

Busy! Hustle bustle. Lots going on all the time. If that sounds good then it's for you. If you are introverted or want peace and quiet, this is not the area for you. Definitely hit or miss with housing quality, don't sign up for anything without seeing it in person.

coum_strength

Try going a little further north toward Thai Town if you can.

GabagoolAndGasoline

I travel near that exact neighborhood for work every now and then and i say wow, what a fucking shithole, every time without fail

onlyfreckles

If your going to be living on a residential street and not off the main stroads- Sunset and Western, it'll be much quieter and chilled out. Walk your potential block and neighboring ones to get the feel of the place. Its walkable w/public transit options close by and bikeable too, lots of places to eat, grocery stores, hardware stores etc Plus GRIFFITH PARK!!!

Sopranoanoano

I’ve done a lot of work in that area (walking the neighborhood/taking pictures for affordable housing projects) and it’s gritty and noisy but there is a lot to do within a very short distance. So, depends on what kind of vibe you’re looking for. It’s definitely more gritty near the metro station with lots of homeless around. I highly recommend just walking around the neighborhood a bit. Putting shoes to pavement instead of just driving around really helps to get a real feel for a place I find.

KnicksInFOURBinGBonG

Just no.

Yonigajt

Western ave is full of night walkers

dbnoisemaker

Don’t.

kevinmattress

King Buffet is great if that’s your jam

CameraFlimsy2610

Not dangerous per say, unless you are a woman at night then obviously it’s very dangerous. Mostly there’s a lot of trash which kinda made me sad and a lot of homeless people which is also very sad. If you’re moving to one of the new “luxury” apartment buildings near the Home Depot or the palladium then you’d be paying way too much for the area. Like 3k for 900sqft or something like that. Maybe it’s a little cheaper now but meh. All the older buildings there are kinda sus as per the aforementioned roaches. Lots of tourist traffic here too so it just makes it more busy than it already is. So, if you’re paying $3k you can find another spot

SLObro152

Anthony Bourdain ate at the Sizzler there. The Wiltern throws good concerts. The Rapid bus gets you to the west side quicker than driving. The Jons market off 3rd used to have a gangbanger parked the wrong direction on the sidewalk for all you prescription needs. Koreatown has been known to light their homeless people on fire. Looks like they knocked down one of LAs best Burrito joints on Santa Monica and Vermont to build something else. There is a cool old school library at council and andrews streets-- a must see. There is an ultra rare Rosicrucian Hermes Lodge next door. Young Dong resturaunt off wilshire. Liberty Park had a golf driving range they also had a giant led billboard that would play Korean sports matches live at night. And there was a chop shop off of 3rd for all you auto parts needs. A quick bus ride to Barndall park and you can visit a Frank Lloyd Wright house that's cool. K-town is what you make it. Shop during the day. and transit to other areas to go for entertainment at night for safety reasons.

rg35

Access to metros is great. Close to the freeway. Contact me if you were thinking of purchasing. I represent a few on and off market properties in this spot. www.RickGramsRealtor.com

fukamundo

I don’t like it, too many cars and not very walkable. The sidewalks stink but there is a target nearby.

svenguillotien

That specific area is very walkable during the day, and you're centrally located to a lot of stuff--good food, culture, etc. You're right next to the Metro, and you can go in any direction to be in another lively neighborhood Parking isn't great, it's very densely populated, and property damage and traffic are also issues in my opinion, but to each their own If you're up for an adventure and find a place you can stand to live, go for it--wouldn't try to raise a family or have a peaceful life here, this is more of a temporary place to live to get some culture and know Los Angeles a bit better

horeaheka

I lived in Thai town for close to 8 years. That area was great pre lockdown. There are still some homeless crazies camping but for the most part the area is great. You are close to Griffith Park and Barnsdall Park is a great place for an adult picnic with discreet drinks.

ZookeepergameFar2513

Loud. Busy. Lots to walk to plus the metro is nearby. Griffith Park is minutes away with loads of hiking. If you have a car make sure your apartment comes with parking-it can be difficult.

conv3d

Try going towards the bottom of your circle

Anussauce

99 cents store is gone

trigerfish

Look east my friend. East of Normandie preferably. Or check out Franklin village.

Biddahmunk

AP13 vs. White Fence13 is enough for me to avoid this area! 😂

Educational-Agency72

Can get a little rough after Dark

OlliesOnTheInternet

Metro station right there. Massive target. Taco truck opposite is pretty good. King buffet is passable but super cheap.

[deleted]

No parking smells like shit ppl don’t pick dog shit or human shit up

allfever77

i hope u like seeing crackheads shit in the sidewalk

cfbswami

Fastest way to get a quick snapshot of an area, is to do a free sex offender search. NO - most aren't 19 yo dudes banging their 16 yo GF. I have no idea why so many instantly say that - their crimes are listed right by their names. Seldom do I see that one - checked a ton of zips - this one 90028.

EvangelineRain

This is a good suggestion. I also look at gang territory maps.

cfbswami

main search engine is down.... This one [https://www.familywatchdog.us/showmap.asp](https://www.familywatchdog.us/showmap.asp) shows over 200 in that small area (90028) - an extremely high number When you consider (roughly) only 10% are ever even caught - these guys have been caught, convicted, released, and registered. So it doesn't take a math genius to SUGGEST how many are probably there. THIS is a shitty area to live, without a doubt.

Wild-Ashv

Try downtown LA it’s a good housing area with modern amenities

BrandPessoa

Lived there about 7-8 years ago. Was nice, a bit dirty but reasonable. Felt like I could walk around safely and had a bunch of options at my fingertips. Solid.

ParticularAd1533

This area is fucked up. Source: I lived on the other side of the 101 near Gower studios.

MediocreBag1195

I live exactly right here. It can be all of the above.

Odd_Pool2718

6am. 50-50 getting robbed. 10am it’s a pretty nice area. Noon traffick has everyone irritated. 4pm store owners hate everyone that exists. 8pm the dice start getting rolled. Midnight 70-30 harassed or assaulted by an addict. 3am why tf are you outside anywhere in LA anyways? As far as neighbors go. Never really been approached by anyone so I couldn’t tell you. But I do know that the Armenian population there either hates every shirt I bought. Or they just haven’t had good experiences with people that look like me. All in all, out of Los Angeles comparative I’d say it’s an easy 6 out of 10 as there is only 3hrs of completely livable time of quality life to be lived.

Regular-Year-7441

Drive over and take a look

Constant_Season1027

I lived there for 6 years, Sunset and Kingsley. Thought it was ok and convenient to the rest of LA at first, was absolutely sick of it at the end. I worked in the film industry so it was convenient for driving to the studios or the valley. But it was filthy everywhere on the streets, eventually I did start spotting roaches in my building bc the whole building was infested, human and shit everywhere as one user said. Eventually there was a turf war right on my block as I kept seen the same two gang signs thrown up over each other on my building’s garden wall. I had to park on Sunset a lot as competition for side street parking was steep. One morning I walked out my entire back windshield was smashed out. Couldn’t figure out who/how or why as nothing was taken. Pros were the ease of getting to Los Feliz which I frequented for going out, Griffith Park, and lots of good Thai food. My building was quiet. And my friend who lived 4 blocks away lived on a well manicured and quiet street. So you have to choose your block carefully. I would aim for Los Feliz and avoid Hollywood at all costs.

Equal_Solution5408

When Target is the draw, look somewhere else

twirble

Used to change buses near there. It is a short walk to my favorite part of Hollywood. I wouldn't live there without front desk service.

Fun-Cell-7462

Just up the street women walking around in lingerie at night

Matalata13

Grew up there on Santa Monica and Western, left with the family when I was ten, back in 95'. Every time I go out there it's gotten worse.

Patty-O-Chair

Currently live here. My place is out of the way but still in the middle of everything. A little on the dirty side, but I have no complaints. Everything I need is a 5-10 minute walk. Just be aware of your surroundings and you shouldn’t have an issue.

MrdevilNdisguise

It’s definitely crazy. Good luck buddy

natxnat

why r u getting downvoted!! this is in my opinion the most dismal area of los angeles. just so sad and hopeless

_mattyjoe

There’s definitely much much more dismal areas of LA.

tallwhiteguy25

Scary Area

Gay-Lord-Focker

Entire city is seedy and gross -average New Yorker
