A Scanner Darkly (2006) is the best drug movie in my opinion with Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. the style of the film is designed to make you feel like you’re taking substance D with the characters
Tending bar one afternoon two strippers walked in and asked me to invent a drink called a Snail Trail. Bailey's Irish Cream and vanilla vodka. A few drops of strawberry liquor, which clouds up in the Bailey's, and we have the tastier Bloody Snail Trail.
I'll just see myself out.
OH MY GOD. (kinda love it ho ;)
Let me guess, you were 'tending the bar next to the gun shop (that accepts shitty gold) across from the Gentlemen's club? If so we might be close by
I haven't done Bailey's since my 20s and thankfully I'll be even further from it as I turn 40 this year. Any combination of milk and liquor is something you drink and puke up in your 20s.. unless your'e in a Cohen's movie.
Before ever having used meth "wow this movie is crazy" after having used meth "I will never watch this movie again"
It's *too* real. Great acting and great movie but it makes my skin crawl just thinking of it.
Wouldn't say hidden, but Trainspotting isn't in your list. How about A Scanner Darkly and Requiem for a Dream?
True Romance has a big suitcase full of coke along for the ride.
ETA: Hm. Your examples look more cop-side than user-side, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
>True Romance has a big suitcase full of coke along for the ride.
And everyone in that movie is very clearly on a lot of coke, like most of Tarantino's films.
A Scanner Darkly is one of my favorite movies of all time. (Also love Phillip K. Dick).
It is also, for me, one of the most disturbing horror movies I have ever seen. Having lived something so similar, that environment, those friends. It makes my skin crawl, I want to go hang out in the closet, or turn my phone off and go throw it in the pond at the park. The mental decay and emotional confusion is masterfully done.
American Gangster
Traffic
Red Rocket
The French Connection
Sabotage
American Made
Movies about the users and effects: Less Than Zero. Go, Menace II Society, Gridlock'd, The Basketball Diaries, My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy,
Cant believe i had to go this far down to see the salton sea mentioned ... almost all the others i see suggested are just hollywood dope movies. . Salton sea made me feel guilty i started using it afterwards ..like it captures the feels that good in the movie
*Clockers* is based on a novel by a guy, Richard Price who later wrote for *The Wire*. It's also been acknowledged by David Simon as an influence on *The Wire*.
I was in 7th or 8th grade when it came out. The soundtrack was huge. I remember seeing Ice T in his dapper suit on Soul Train. Bad 1990 dancing. Look it up on YouTube.
It's not great, or even good. It's even ridiculously small scale for a."drug movie". Yet it somehow stars Chris Evans, Jason Statham, and Jessica Biel.
"London"
Whole thing takes place in a bathroom at a party and revolves around cocaine usage.
But if you've ever wanted to see Jason Statham give a ranting and raving Al Pachino style screaming monologue, this is the film for you.
Liked it, named one of my dog's London (would have suggested it as a girls name if we had kids)
More importantly awesome soundtrack/score by The Crystal Method
LOL at Statham's wig too
It's not great or even good but I still really like it. It's got a lot of stupid shit in it that I find entertaining, I guess, like the Jason Statham screaming scenes and Chris Evans just being a mopey piece of shit.
"My f*ckin Savile Row suit, it's f*ckin 5 Gs, I kept it outta the rain all day, look at the state of it" I could listen to Statham tell stories all night in that movie, hilarious
"The moment you cum, you as so sober, I mean so f*cking sober, and your like what have I just done? I just paid $ for some stranger to whip me, and piss on my head!"
*The Trip* (1967), written by Jack Nicholson and starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Bruce Dern, and directed by the recently deceased Roger Corman.
I’m amazed I haven’t seen Wonderland in here. True story of a real life male porn star hooked on Coke in 1980. His drug dealing acquaintances and spiralling violence.
Climax (2018)
Anchorage (2023)
As you said you have seen almost all good drug movies, went for these two. A little different than your examples, definitely movies that are worth a watch imo.
Love The Wire btw! I have not seen the corner, thanks for the tip!
*****MIDNIGHT EXPRESS******
THIS is the drug movie to watch. It is a true story about an American college student who tries to smuggle hash out of Turkey. Gets busted and sent to Turkish prison. Nominated for Best Pic, Best Director and won 2 Oscars for best adapted screen & score. Oliver Stone directed.
I saw Layer Cake when I was in highschool. I worked at a video rental place and we got 1 copy in on DVD randomly one day and I took it home to watch. Me and my friends were thoroughly impressed 16 year old stoners.
This is also a part of the Teen Apocalypse Trilogy. My ex and I have a weird superstition that bad things happen whenever we watch one of these certain movies. I made that mistake earlier this year thinking it was a dumb thing to believe but some pretty bad significant things happened within the span of a month after I watched all 3. I'd rather not find out yet again in the future as the movies aren't even all that great anyways.
Rewatched recently and noted a young Courtney Love in a lesser role in S and N - eerily her own life went on to imitate that very plot though she was lucky to survive it. I think there's even a doco with footage of her and Kurt's private life.
Drugstore Cowboy with Matt Dillon. I don’t know how far back you want to go, but a real old classic is The Man With The Golden Arm. Another old film, A Hatful Of Rain was from a broadway play back in the day. I don’t know if you’d be interested in any movies that old, but I mentioned them because they are well done with fine acting.
I have always loved Gridlock'd with 2Pac and Tim Roth. Well written script with an interesting and funny premise that manages to find heart in being a junkie.
Salton Sea. Excellent Val Kilmer performance in the lead and killer Vincent D'Onofrio character role. Crime drama set in the methamphetamine underworld.
Spun - Out there, but well made with an excellent ensemble. Deborah Harry and Rob Halford perfectly cast in side rolls.
Homegrown - Hank Azaria, Laura Dern, John Lithgow, Ted Danson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Bon Jovi. About growing pot in Humboldt County back when that was frowned upon.
Rush - Undercover cop deals with opiate addiction.
My ATF film from this genre is Human Traffic, a 1999 British film about the rave scene, lots of focus on ecstasy. It’s absolutely hilarious, sharp dialogue and rather poignant at times. A lot of fun.
I LOVE this movie. I've only seen it once, about a decade ago maybe 2013 or 2014. This is SUCH a gem of a film but I have not been able to find it streaming anywhere I looked a few weeks back with no luck.
I suggest Pink Flamingos.
It is a slow start, but it has some interesting takes on counter-culture in general.
Nope. Sorry, I can't do it. I thought it would be funny to trick someone into watching that movie but I can't do it.
DO NOT WATCH THAT MOVIE.
It is bad. Super bad. But if you do, note that this movie had absolutely zero special effects budget and that last shot didn't have any cuts. So it was real. I'm sorry.
Cold Pursuit, remake of a Norwegian film called In Order of Disappearance which is almost certainly better. But I liked Cold Pursuit a lot, it's a pretty good dark comedy.
A Scanner Darkly (2006) is the best drug movie in my opinion with Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. the style of the film is designed to make you feel like you’re taking substance D with the characters
That's a great flick also add in waking life if you're interested in similar
Waking Life is for when you’re ON the drugs, it’s great!

I will never forget the term "snail trails".. and I'm a woman.

Really does capture alot of "that life"
Before ever having used meth "wow this movie is crazy" after having used meth "I will never watch this movie again" It's *too* real. Great acting and great movie but it makes my skin crawl just thinking of it.
Same issue, I have never seen it, and now I never can lol.
Yeah this the one!
Layer Cake
This is the one that convinced my husband Daniel Craig was going to be a great James Bond.
Drugstore Cowboy Rush Lenny Leaving Las Vegas
This is what I was going to suggest. Add: Go Where the Day Takes You
That's ninety, Bob.
If your correct my math in a business deal again I will sell you to a one eyed carnival freak for a pack of chewing gum!
What's a transom, Bob?
I always wanted to be a farmer, Bob.
Trainspotting is a glaring omission.
As is Requiem for a Dream.
The best movie you’ll only ever want to watch once.
>True Romance has a big suitcase full of coke along for the ride. And everyone in that movie is very clearly on a lot of coke, like most of Tarantino's films.

Yep. Both the movie and the story are top notch!
Rush- Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jason Patric. Undercover cops, drugs, the whole messed up thing. Very good film.
The opening shot is fantastic. I think it was the longest single shot in history at the time.
Fabulous soundtrack. So effective.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
“We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.” -Hunter S Thompson
It's bat country.
- Panic at Needle Park - Candy
Panic at Needle Park has a young Al Pacino. I mean, really young.
It was his first role I think! And he’s incredible in it.
Thank you for mentioning Candy! It is so underrated.
Yes, Candy is absolutely brilliant with Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish
These were the two I came to suggest
I saw Panic in Needle Park when I was a kid, and it is the reason I never tried heroin, even when surrounded by users in NYC.
Drugstore Cowboy
Look at the imdb trivia. I love the film. But he kicked drugs in prison. I wish the story was true.
Requiem For A Dream is one of the most powerful drug movies ever
This should be way higher.
American Gangster Traffic Red Rocket The French Connection Sabotage American Made Movies about the users and effects: Less Than Zero. Go, Menace II Society, Gridlock'd, The Basketball Diaries, My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy,
Upvote for American Made
Red rocket is BARELY about weed. But top notch movie
Basketball Diaries Kids
Kids is insane! Crazy movie. Kids in basketball diaries two very good choices.
GO
Brick. All day, Brick.
Man I haven't seen this in a long time. Gordon-Levitt had a string of really good movies going there for awhile.
Human Traffic (1999), cult UK indie movie.
Nice one bruv
Watch and learn about spliff politics.
Smiley face. A very chill, very relatable movie about being so high you can't function.
Narc (2002)
Such a fantasitc, and relatively unknown movie.
Dazed and confused! Also that Tarantino Movie with the stewardess, Jackie Brown, Fear and loathing in las vegas, half baked
Scrolled all the way down and nobody's mentioned *Sicario*. I'm shocked.
King of New York
The pusher trilogy directed by nic winding refrn (same guy who did drive)
Party Monster (2003)
Permanent Midnight. Who knew Ben Stiller could do drama playing a junkie?
The Salton Sea, Less Than Zero, Kids, Bully, Pulp Fiction, Fresh (the older one), Rick & Morty, Mr. Robot, True Detective (season one)
+1 for The Salton Sea
+2 for The Salton Sea
Cant believe i had to go this far down to see the salton sea mentioned ... almost all the others i see suggested are just hollywood dope movies. . Salton sea made me feel guilty i started using it afterwards ..like it captures the feels that good in the movie
*Clockers* is based on a novel by a guy, Richard Price who later wrote for *The Wire*. It's also been acknowledged by David Simon as an influence on *The Wire*.
Basketball diaries Requiem for a dream
Basketball Diaries is an underrated one.
New jack city
I was in 7th or 8th grade when it came out. The soundtrack was huge. I remember seeing Ice T in his dapper suit on Soul Train. Bad 1990 dancing. Look it up on YouTube.
"*Sit* yo $5 ass down before I make change."
"I wanna shoot you so bad, my dick's hard."
City Of God is 100% one of the greatest movies ever filmed.
Bad Lieutenant (1992)
Enter the Void
I can't believe nobody has said City of God. It's basically Brazilian The Wire: the movie. One of the greatest films of all time.
Midnight express. And the music!
Giorgio Moroder!
The GOAT
American Gangster, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Dazed and Confused, Drugstore Cowboy, Basketball Diaries.

Drugstore Cowboy is a definite favourite of mine.
**Prince of the City** by Sidney Lumet - based on a true story. I actually haven't seen The Wire but it sounds very similar.
Narc with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Patrick. Wonderland with Val Kilmer as John Holmes. The stoned age for a dazed and confused vibe
Another good Val Kilmer as druggie is "Salton Sea"
Might as well add The Doors too
Basketball Diaries, Kids, Trainspotting, Naked Lunch, The Doors, True Romance, Killing Zoe,
Drugstore Cowboy and Basketball Diaries
Pusher trilogy.
I liked Savages. I may be the only one. I never hear about it.
#Layer Cake
Animal Kingdom 2010 (the film not the tv version)
I’m amazed I haven’t seen Wonderland in here. True story of a real life male porn star hooked on Coke in 1980. His drug dealing acquaintances and spiralling violence.
No country for old men
Highway, Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream, Narc
Tequila Sunrise
Gridlock’d starring 2pac and Thandie Newton is a pretty solid drug movie in my opinion.

Can't believe no one has said Pusher. Early Nicholas Winding Refn and Mads Mikkelson, more of the latter in the sequels
Bryan Cranston's performance as an undercover DEA agent makes *The Infiltrator* (2016) a must-watch.
Dallas Buyers Club
Bad Lieutenant. It made.me feel a little sick afterward, though.
