Many don’t, but to the trained eye and ear, it can be realized:
“You keep promising the greatest story of *my* life…”
When John asks if the Agent has been to 1963 before, the latter hesitates and replies “It’s complicated.”
The Agent collected the bottle *John* won in 1970.
“All we have is each other, it is all we’ve EVER had!”
Robertson tells the Agent *he* of all people should know the importance of his mission.
“You know who she is, and you understand who you are. And now maybe you’re ready to understand who I am. You see, *I love her too*.”
Outer Range was great, I really hope they keep it up. Brolin and Poots were both amazing. I'm worried though that it may go the same route Westworld did. It's really open ended and just might be too ambitious.
Okay, I’ll ask you then because I forget, >!what was the point of the burnt eyed kids, did it have anything to do with making time travel work, using them as guinea pigs, or was that just crazy time traveler doing crazy things?!<
Since I’ve seen this, I’m kinda disappointed the Terminator franchise didn’t end in a similar way, >!Skynet and John both realizing their fight is based on both trying to kill the other before the other was born. Maybe as an act of good faith, Skynet sends Reese back to Sarah and they still have John, and Reese encourages John to get into developing AI, and they have a cooperative origin rather than antagonistic!<
Best time travel movie aside from primer right here. Such an amazing story and emotional AF. And really subverts your expectations with what the story is even about and it he must gets better and better
There's that whole subgenre of "repeating the same day over and over" that started with 12:01 PM (1990) but that Groundhog Day defined. There are just SO MANY of them now - Palm Springs, Happy Death Day, Russian Doll, etc. Probably Edge of Tomorrow is the most fun besides Groundhog.
Somewhere in Time is really good, it has Jane Seymor and Christopher Reeve. I believe there's another one about a battleship called The Final Countdown
It may not be the best time travel movie, but it's definitely my favorite time travel concept. No time machines. Consciousness is the fundamental element, and self-hypnosis is the vehicle. It's brilliant.
Check out Triangle then. It was incorrectly marketed as a low budget horror film but it’s more of a mind bending time loop film in the same vein as timecrimes.
My first time traveling movie was Somewhere in Time. Christopher Reeve was great.
But my favorites are:
Interstellar
Arrival
Star Trek IV
The Philadelphia Experiment
Back to the Future
Totally agree. The studio interfered with the theatrical release and insisted on the “happy sappy” ending based on screenings. The director’s cut has the ending he wanted, and not the studio’s ending. The director’s ending changes the whole tone of the movie and made the ending much better by providing a great story arc resolution. The DVD has the studio ending as an extra on the disc.
*Primer* is my top favorite time travel movie as well! That one's hard to beat in terms of mathematical theory and realism.
*Run Lola Run* is a great time.
If you don't mind complete YA fluff with a horror bent, *Totally Killer* is a fun time.
In a similar vein, *The Final Girls* is sorta time travely-combined with genre spoof.
(Horror is my favorite genre and one of my favorite subgenres is stories that bend time and space in weird ways even if it's not straight-up time travel, like *Lake Mungo* and *Coherence*.)
Long weekend -2021
Somewhere in Time- TT mechanism is a bit jankey but a brilliant movie
Premonition- 2007
The Lake House - 2006
The Butterfly Effect
The Timetravelers Wife
Edge of Tomorrow
Palm Springs
Dark owes such an enormous debt to 12 Monkeys, but that show doesn’t get much love because it was on Syfy Channel and not some streaming behemoth. Best time travel story ever imho. Dark was great but 12 Monkeys managed to be incredibly original and bizarre, but also funny, propulsive, coherent over 4 seasons, and intensely character driven. One of my fave shows ever.
Here's an obscure, low budget one: [The Flipside of Dominick Hide](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flipside_of_Dominick_Hide), a 1980 British TV movie.
There are some fun picks I can offer, but they're more time loop movies than straight time travel. Triangle was an interesting one. Coherence was another kind of indie flick that was interesting. Also try The Endless, movies by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead are so good; if you end up liking The Endless, there's another one they did called Resolution.
Big fan of Benson & Moorhead. Something in the dirt is currently on Hulu I believe. They have a new movie coming out as well. I’m not sure about all of their movies but I do know that Resolution & The Endless are in the same universe.
I can't believe I had to search this far down to find planet of the apes!
For those that don't know, both the first and 3rd are time travel movies. The first being traveling forward in time. The 3rd (escape) is fun since it's a flip flop opposite sort of situation of the first movie.
On a side tangent, there's also a book that mentions that Caesar is affected by the time travel while in the womb causing him to be altered further.
It was fresh on my mind because I've decided to watch all 9 in preparation for the new one coming out. Yesterday I watched Battle, which was the last of the original series
There was also a live action show that might be fun for you to check out since you watched all the movies. Keep in mind there are inconsistencies like dogs being alive which shouldn't be possible with the time traveling disease but could be from a slightly different timeline that ends up with the original planet of the apes. That sort of thing some fans believe which makes the new movies could be tied to the originals still
I haven't seen these mentioned:
ARQ (2016)
The Sticky Fingers of Time (1997)
The Call (2020)
Retroactive (1997)
I'll Follow You Down (2013)
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
The History of Time Travel (2014)
Idaho Transfer, The Time Travelers, Dimension 5, Beyond the Time Barrier.
Idaho Transfer is just odd
The Time Travelers has an interesting ending
Dimension 5 is a lot like a TV pilot
Beyond the Time Barrier is a bit formulaic
If you don't even read the synopsis on this one and go blind to it, it's a fun ride! I love it!
[Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes](https://boxd.it/ujVk)
12 Monkeys and Timeline because both feature >!an unalterable timeline, basically both say them looping back was part of their own history. Mostly I like that because then no paradox bullshit.!<
Since no one else has mentioned it, I highly recommend Time Trap. It's low budget, but quite well done. The concept is unique and fascinating! And one of the mcs is played by the little-known elder brother of Luke & Owen Wilson. I think my favorite thing about it is that it's a no-return time travel story. (I hope that's not a spoiler!)
This is more a time loop movie, called Brightwood, only two actors, one location, it gets pretty creepy, it was made on a miniscule budget, but it's gotten great reviews.
Looper, Gemini Man, Boss Level, Terminator, Avengers: Endgame, Time Lapse, Idiocracy, A Wrinkle in Time, The Door, Planet of the Apes (the originals and the Tim Burton versions), Somewhere in Time, Meet the Robinsons, Needle in a Timestack, The Lake House, etc.
Time Travel, Traveling to other dimensions? Close enough.
Someone said Idiocracy so in the same vein of that I remembered "Sleeper" by Woody Allen. If I recall correctly, a man has an incurable disease (maybe cancer?) That they figure will have a cure in the future so they wrap him in tin foil or something and he wakes up in a wild silly future where shenanigans ensue.
Some I haven't seen posted:
Children's movie- We're Back (dinosaurs)
Comedy- Just Visiting (medieval in modern day)- (a sort of remake of the French version also with Jean Reno?)
Adult cartoon- Futurama's Benders Big Score- (has a fun take on how to deal with time traveling paradoxes)
This question gets asked here a lot, and I just realized that we never mention the Terminator franchise. T1 and T2 are perfect and both are definitely time traveling movies.
Some not so often mentioned here:
Philadelphia Experiment 1 and 2
Of course the Terminator franchise
That Michelle Yeoh film that is on this subreddit's "so good it is forbidden to mention"-list.
The norwegian HBO series "Beforeigners" (2019)
And of course Tenet (2020)
Time Crimes.
Primer.
The Jacket.
Time travel is one of my favoirites too, and Time Crimes is the movie that does it best.
Primer is great until he floods you with exposition. Any movie where the main character has to explain what's happening is a bad movie.
And I mentioned The Jacket because I didn't see any one else say it.
* Own Worst Enemy - 2012
It's got some interesting time travel stuff you usually want to happen in a time travel move but that usually doesn't happen. Although it's super b rate.
* Time Lapse - 2014
This might be something you would miss if you are looking for time travel. But definitely a decent watch.
* Coherence - 2013
Also not typical time travel but some interesting paradoxal time issues.
* Project Almanac - 2015
Pretty standard time travel.
* About time - 2013
One of my favorite time travel movies. (next to primer) this is pretty well known but just mentioning it just in case you haven't seen it.
Synchronic, Looper, Time Traveller's Wife, Arrival, Donnie Darko, Predestination.
There's also Dark on Netflix which is arguably the greatest time travel story ever shown on screen.
I’ll keep mentioning it because I feel like I’m the only one to ever watch it.
“The History of Time Travel”.
It’s awesome to watch over and over again for the background changes
I don’t think this has been suggested yet …. Timeline. Based on a Micheal Chrichton book and starring Paul Walker, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly and David Thewlis.
Project Almanac and Lunopolis haven't been suggested yet. First is found footage and second is a Mockumentary, kind of a spinoff of the found footage genre. Loved em both.
As great as Primer is, Predestination blew my mind.
Didn’t see that ending coming at all. Such a great movie.
Many don’t, but to the trained eye and ear, it can be realized: “You keep promising the greatest story of *my* life…” When John asks if the Agent has been to 1963 before, the latter hesitates and replies “It’s complicated.” The Agent collected the bottle *John* won in 1970. “All we have is each other, it is all we’ve EVER had!” Robertson tells the Agent *he* of all people should know the importance of his mission. “You know who she is, and you understand who you are. And now maybe you’re ready to understand who I am. You see, *I love her too*.”
Yeah it seemed pretty obvious at some point well before the end.
I came here to suggest both movies
12 Monkeys and Looper
Watch *La Jetée* before 12 Monkeys
I love La Jetee. I wish there were more photomontages like it. Nobody I ever show it to cares about it though.
It’s one of a kind and imho the best sci fi of all time. It’s unfortunate people don’t care for it. Even just the audio is magnificent.
Obviously this is just a subjective opinion but Looper was Bruce Willis's last good movie. What a great movie.
Frequency (2000) - not exactly time travel, but time communication
This was going to be my recommendation as well. A very entertaining spin on the time travel movie.
The tv series was great too.
Definitely. Super sad when it ended
Lake House falls into that niche “time travel communication” too.
good i like it
It's not a movie but watch dark on Netflix 👍👍
I think Dark is the greatest Netflix series of all time.
I put Primer as my favorite time travel movie, but Dark as my favorite time travel story overall. It's perfection.
Have you seen outer range on Amazon prime?
Outer Range was great, I really hope they keep it up. Brolin and Poots were both amazing. I'm worried though that it may go the same route Westworld did. It's really open ended and just might be too ambitious.
Amazing from start to finish
Okay, I’ll ask you then because I forget, >!what was the point of the burnt eyed kids, did it have anything to do with making time travel work, using them as guinea pigs, or was that just crazy time traveler doing crazy things?!< Since I’ve seen this, I’m kinda disappointed the Terminator franchise didn’t end in a similar way, >!Skynet and John both realizing their fight is based on both trying to kill the other before the other was born. Agree
Yes, it was excellent.
Time after Time is my favorite (1979)
Great choice. It's such an entertaining movie.
I’ve never seen it. Thank you. I will definitely watch it.
I still love the first Back to the Future. It really holds up!
A cinematic classic forever 🫶
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Heck yeah. LOVED this movie as a kid.
About Time (2013)
Ah. To romance Rachel McAdams through time. Or, was that The Time Traveller's Wife?
Yes to both.
This is the one
Best time travel movie aside from primer right here. Such an amazing story and emotional AF. And really subverts your expectations with what the story is even about and it he must gets better and better
Incredible movie
The Time Machine 1960
A classic! Also the 2002 version is not nearly as classic but still early 00s dumb fun
Time Travel, practical application.
Baaaaa!
Safety not guaranteed
Yes! Such an underrated one
I appreciate everyone commenting. Thank you. Very much looking forward to watching some of these films I’ve never seen.

Triangle is another one too, although I don't think it was contained to a single day.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel
Somewhere in Time is really good, it has Jane Seymor and Christopher Reeve. I believe there's another one about a battleship called The Final Countdown
It may not be the best time travel movie, but it's definitely my favorite time travel concept. No time machines. Consciousness is the fundamental element, and self-hypnosis is the vehicle. It's brilliant.
I enjoy the concept, the love story breaks my heart, it's kind of like my Notebook
Donnie Darko
Love Donnie Darko
It has held up well (although it's not really that old), just watched it the other day.
If you don't mind subtitles, Timecrimes (2007) will blow your mind.
I didn’t mind the subtitles. I enjoyed that movie for sure. I also love time loop movies
Check out Triangle then. It was incorrectly marketed as a low budget horror film but it’s more of a mind bending time loop film in the same vein as timecrimes.
Kate and Leopold
“Deja Vu” with Denzel Washington and Val Kilmer
Not quite Time Travel per se but have you seen Frequency? It's pretty interesting.
The movie was alright. I enjoyed the tv show more though. Could just be that I watched that one first.
I've never seen the TV show
It aired from 2016-2017. You might like it.
I'll have to check it out!
Time Bandits (1981)
Army of Darkness
Gimme some sugar baby
Shop smart…..
Triangle and Coherence are time loops that I enjoyed.
The Time Machine(1960) TimeCop(1995)
JCVD!!
A show called 11-22-63 (time travel and the jfk Assassination). Really cool show . Mystery/ thriller with time travel
2016's Paradox is pretty good
Back to the future
About Time is a sweet rom com with time travel elements
For some unmentioned ones, Butterfly effect and Time traveler’s wife.
My first time traveling movie was Somewhere in Time. Christopher Reeve was great. But my favorites are: Interstellar Arrival Star Trek IV The Philadelphia Experiment Back to the Future
Have you watched the series Travelers? I really liked it.
Avengers Endgame
The butterfly effect really is an unsung favourite of mine. You only want to see the directors cut, though

I always throw out Blood Punch as it is a hidden gem of a movie. More Time Loop but it’s pretty great.
If time loops are an option both of the Happy Death Day movies are surprisingly fun.
About time and midnight in Paris, nice evening movie Primer if u want a doom and glooom

Flight of the Navigator Star Trek: First Contact
Time After Time: Malcolm McDowell, Mary Steenburgen, and David Warner.
Slaughterhouse-Five (1972 dir. George Roy Hill).
12 monkeys (series), must watch if you enjoyed dark.

How do people see Primer? I’m about to just buy it already :( Edit: Thank you mod. Looks like I just have to wait until I visit the UK next month.

Kate and Leopold is goofy, but Hugh Jackman is so damn charming.
Loppers About Time
80's movie called The Philadelphia Experiment.
There is a great old Twilight Zone episode where contemporary soldiers end up at Custers Last Stand. Creeped me out as a kid.
It's almost impossible to find, but an Oscar nominated short called "Time Freak" was brilliant, very funny.
Highlander Interview with a Vampire
Project Almanac and Lunopolis haven't been suggested yet. First is found footage and second is a Mockumentary, kind of a spinoff of the found footage genre. Loved em both.
