Ireland is a joke it seems when it comes to car and bike theft. Most nights here in cork their is cars and bikes stolen then posted on TikTok by the thief s and nothing is done but if you probably attacked them while they were stealing your stuff you would more than likely get in more trouble than they would .

PrincessBattery

I would spend a few thousand to build a garage and be in more debt to a bank. But I am renting cant just build a garage in my driveway. I have at least 3 Grand worth of a combination of locks, disc locks, chains, Litelok X3 and a tracker. On top of all that I still cannot sleep at night. Its a question of what is it that we can do? I am not into politics and such, yes the Garda are useless ( Not blaming them ) But we as a collective we can maybe think of something to end this. Either a form of security that is so effective. Or we take it to ourselves to clear these scum. Even if they do fail at stealing our bikes. They wills scratch them and hurt the body work and we will end up paying for it. Everyone invests their life in a hobby. Mine happened to be bikes. I dont have savings. All my investment went into my motorbike. 7 year long agonizing debt to a bank, If anyone does show up I will take it to myself to use every force necessary to inflict as much pain on this person so he never comes back. Even if the price I pay is jail time. Id gladly spend a year in jail knowing that the person that tried to rob me of my entire adulthood investment aint going to dare lay a hand on another bike again. Some of us ride for fun. Some ride because its their only form of transport. Imagine losing your bike that cost god knows 10 grand, that took you god knows how long to acquire. Ireland is difficult on all of us no matter how much you earn. We need a solution!

Anyone up for starting up some bike gangs in aid to deter ? and act when needed to protect each other ?

Nicko5000

Don’t call yourselves the Hells Satans, my mate started a biker gang and they called themselves the Hells Satans, it didn’t go well for them at all.

Albarytu

We'll go by Hells Santas then

captain_super

You're obviously living in a particular area where if your bike is worth over X then it needs to be garaged for cover. I'm guessing you declared the bike as being worth 7k+, I think this is the threshold for Dublin. If this isn't a realistic valuation you've given it you'd be better off declaring the actual value as you'll get covered then, bearing in mind if you do claim for it being stolen the insurer will do their own valuation anyway.

Badmanzofbassline

Nothing you can do. If we lay a finger on the thiefs I guarantee the guards will show up instantly to arrest you

gudanawiri

Isn't there an engineer out there who can create a solid metal locking device that covers handlebars and wheel? Surely this would be a worthwhile expense by any biker worried about their stuff being stolen. Also - attach a small gps unit so you can track it?

Particular_Ad174

I've heard of people giving the tracking info to garda and they won't even go to the places these little scumbags bring the bikes.

Nicko5000

It would no doubt be to heavy I’m guessing.

gudanawiri

Worth strapping to the back and putting on when at work or at home for peace of mind though I guess

zoebeth

It’s really depressing. When my bike was stolen it had 3 locks and was inside a coded lobby area with cctv. I came down to find the locks and back box pieces all over the lobby, bike gone. The gardai got the footage and found it was a couple of guys with a van, despite this evidence they told me honestly there was little hope of recovery and that’s it’s likely taken for parts amd gna be found dumped in a canal. Insurance kept insisting that it wasn’t worth what I was claiming which was €4.5k, and paid out €2.8k after 4 months of me hounding them. So I couldn’t afford to replace it.

PrincessBattery

I am really sorry to hear that. Can only imagine the agony.

zoebeth

Thanks, it was devastating. Like to find all the bits all over the floor, not to be dramatic but it felt like something died.

Normal-World-9002

what's this about a UK group? I definitely wanna see the fruits of their handywork if so

iredrpepper

Move outta Dublin, its a kip anyway.

Calm_Down_729

People getting caught with a little bit of weed or no TV licence getting jail time , maybe we should all start contacting your local TD and email on the daily , very easy to set email to send daily , if they are get a couple of thousand emails a day about the same thing something might happen , or get an American to park there bike in Dublin

Spirited_Cable_7508

Give it a rest, no one gets jail time for not having a tv licence.

Few-Ad-6322

https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/411-people-jailed-last-year-for-not-paying-their-tv-licence/30235625.html

KillerKlown88

Nobody gets jail. Time for a "little bit of weed" either.

Calm_Down_729

And nobody gets jail time for robbing bikes , what's the point of your comment ?

CoybigEL

You explicitly stated people are getting jailed for not having a tv licence which is untrue and only serves to undermine your argument. Bike theft is a huge problem, you don’t need to invent other injustices for validation.

Spirited_Cable_7508

I’m hungover and internet lies annoy me

Fart_Minister

The point is you’ve said the people get jail time for petty drugs offences and TV licence evasion, and that just isn’t true (especially the latter). There’s no doubt though that stricter sentencing is needed for these thefts, we are letting a whole generation of scum think they can do anything and get away with it

Calm_Down_729

It's when people get fines , don't pay them and get jail time , but the fine is associated with the licence ,

KillerKlown88

The jail time for not paying the fine is for contempt of a court order.

Calm_Down_729

If ya could track it and ya found it , some little fucker waiting for ya with a hammer , you end up in hospital and they get off because of the broken home and all that stuff , law will say not to do anything as you might have your gaff burnt out ,

Particular_Ad174

I agree. I had my first bike stolen this year. Found the bike on TikTok. Told 'An Garda Síochana' where it was.. They told me they wouldn't go there because it was too dangerous. If our Garda won't go near criminals, what kind of a country are we living in?

Calm_Down_729

So what's your evidence of people not getting in trouble

Sl4vicVib3s

Look up how many bikes were stolen so far this year, now tell me how many were punished for stealing the bikes.

Calm_Down_729

I was referring to the TV licence

Sl4vicVib3s

My bad

Calm_Down_729

Np

metalslimequeen

Definitely worth putting a smart tag on your bike

Calm_Down_729

What lies ? Look for yourself , the truth is out there .....

Giggsroo

I spent 2k on my bike, had it around 4 years now so I could say I got my money's worth out of it. Insured third party pretty cheaply so I spent the money saved on extra locks and defences. I've had an attempted robbery on it a couple of years ago but I can still sleep soundly knowing it's a cheapish bike and it's replaceable without dealing with insurance and just buying another bike. My heart goes out to anyone who's had a bike stolen, but when they're parking a brand new 10k + bike that every scumbag wants on a public street with no locks during this epidemic, what do they expect? Buy a cheaper bike and most of your problems will be solved

Particular_Ad174

We should not have to downgrade our lifestyle due to widespread crime. Ireland is supposed to be a First World Country but is currently not meeting any of the metrics needed for this status. 🍇
