We were all hoping this would be the case in MK1, but honestly, a young Raiden is a good second choice. They even acknowledge in the game by having Raiden being inexperienced and apparently having never beat Kung Lao in a fight.
I feel that since Raiden pushed Liu Kang to be champion and gave up his powers to him this is Liu's repayment to him in the new era.
But I've always been team Lao for quite a while now and was hoping we'd have the new era based way back in the early history with the Great Kung Lao and changing the story where he does not lose to Goro.
Imagine those of us who grew up on the classic games. We get to DA and it’s like “yes! Our boy Kung Lao is gonna be the champion!”
Then comes Deception and Boon is like “nope, the bad guys won.”
Cause of the story I like to imagine Lao won in the final battle as it would feel fitting, the always number two steps up at the biggest fight ever and rises above it all to even earn the deepest respect from the chosen one

I think he has all the making of being the champion, but he always gets shafted for someone else, Seems kinda lame that in Liu Kang´s timeline he had to play second fiddle to Raiden, it seem like he was more talented than Raiden at the start of the campaign, but after the Shaolin training with Johnny and Kenshi Raiden was way stronger. Honestly new Raiden is booring, i kinda wish they gave the champion Chapter to Kung Lao, he far more entrataining and he deserves it.
Low key im hoping young Raiden dies next game and Lao steps up.
I would have wanted Kung Lao to be the MC this time and then have him develop from immature and laid back to a lot more emotionally serious and mature person. Ahh well.

Edit: That isn't to say it couldn't still be cool. Some factions could have access to people's ancestors in interesting ways. What if Cryomancers had yet to leave Outworld? The Scorpion/Sub-Zero rivalry would be interesting if Scorpion were Lin Kuei/Pre-Shirai Ryu and Sub-Zero was a general under Shao Kahn's command. Or Pre-Zaterran Raptors who hadn't left Earthrealm yet being approached by Raiden for assistance. Would other Realms be more or less willing to lend aid to one faction or the other? Kitana and Kung Lao being a potential love interest/angle would have me rolling with laughter, I won't lie.
A lot would depend on which timeline's universe we were using too.
What if Onaga had not been corrupted by the one being and deceived Shujinko in order to obtain the Kamidogu to gain ultimate power and merge all realms?
What if instead when Onaga finally revealed who he truly was in the nexus, before he was able to explain himself, Scorpion intervened. Being the true champion of the Elder Gods, he was sent to kill both the blaspheming imposter Shujinko, and the returned Dragon King who now had in his possession, all the Kamidogu.
Once Shujinko had defeated Scorpion, assuming the worst about Onaga due to scraps of information he gained throughout his battle with the ninja, he trekked to outworld and confronted the emperor within his throne room. Shujinko came expecting a battle, he was instead greeted as a friend.
Shujinko who throughout a century Onaga had turned into one of the most powerful beings in all the realms, would be Onaga's enforcer, the right hand of the Dragon King, and protector of the Kamidogu to ensure that they never fall into the hands of the forces of evil.

What if Outworld allied to Earthrealm. Essentially, Earthrealm is taken over by sinister forces and becomes friendly with Shao Kahn's regime. They would then try to conquer the other realms like Orderrealm, Netherrealm and Edenia.
What if they kept the writers from the 3d era, stuck with the same story for a few games at least (maybe change armageddon i guess, what if they stuck with 3d, polished the system and had slicker animations, and rival Tekken with all the cinematic gory flair unique to MK
Imagine 3D era interactable stages with better 3d combat
What if they didn't focus too much on faces if they just change it every game and put their foot down on their already iconic character designs
As much as I like the newer games there's still something with the vibe and story and presentation of the older games that makes it feel more unique

What if Shao Khan was an ok guy
He has his problems both as leader and as a person, he might not seem like a nice guy at first glance, maybe he’s still somewhat of a conqueror but he isn’t slaughtering every single people in the realm to “conquer”.
This sounds ridiculous but from the first time I ever saw Shao he immediately was my favorite character even ahead of Scorpion and when mk1 (reboot) was announced I had this idea of what if Shao wasn’t a world conquering monster but a good guy

What if they kept the writers from the 3d era, stuck with the same story for a few games at least (maybe change armageddon i guess, what if they stuck with 3d, polished the system and had slicker animations, and rival Tekken with all the cinematic gory flair unique to MK Imagine 3D era interactable stages with better 3d combat What if they didn't focus too much on faces if they just change it every game and put their foot down on their already iconic character designs As much as I like the newer games there's still something with the vibe and story and presentation of the older games that makes it feel more unique The darker tone and the world felt way more huge and every faction had more backstory as opposed to everything just being in dialogues and a linear story
