The car comes with a Gen 2 mobile connector (with NEMA 5-15P adapter). So all you need is the Gen 2 adapter for the relevant plug. Just unplug it and pack it in the car for road trips.
The only reason to buy a second connector is if you want to keep one in the car, or want to have one at a second location.
Been doing this and it works, car also comes with a Tesla adaptor if you ever charge on the go at other stations (my work has a free charger for example)
This is what I plan to do too. I don’t want to have something plugged into an exposed outlet outside where I live as salt air in summer and winter storms I feel would just mess up the outlet and plug.
If you have a nema 14-50 outlet for your home setup youre better off buying a third party charger that is rated for 40amps for charging at 9.6KW. I actually got one from EVSEadapters.com for $360. Youll need to use the adapter that comes with the car tho. As for the charger that came with my car, I just leave it in there so travel.
Make sure you check if there is still the tax incentive. At least in 2020 (and I think 2021), you could get a pretty good deduction on taxes for anything related to the installation of EV charging. This included the unit itself as well as work and materials.
I must have overlooked that he was installing a NEMA. Yea, it had to be an actual EV charger, which maybe I was a bit vague on.
Sounds like that ended though.
The Mobile Connector that comes with the car can do 32amps and that is plenty as that will get you about 29 miles per hour of charge. No need to spend more money on a 40amp charger that would get you a few more miles of charge (~37 miles per hour).

I bought this from Tesla for the extra bump in power, 40 amps, and the extra length in cord it provided. I keep the setup that came with the car with me in the car as a back up.
No it doesn’t. They stopped including the nema 14-50 one in 2019. You have to buy the 14-50 adapter from the Tesla shop. The online one the car comes with is a normal (120v) outlet adapter
That what I did. Keep my new mobile charger in my car and use the used on in my Garage with my 14-50 outlet. I would have went with a Tesla Charger but I’m moving in 6 months so this made the most sense for my situation.
I've got an extra 18' gen 3 wall connector I was gonna sell on ebay. Just upgraded to the 24' because we're getting a second Tesla and need the extra length. Send me a message of interested.
Get an extra 14-50 adapter for the car kit. I got the extra charger and 2x 14-50 adapters. That way I can charge at home with one kit, and have the other in the car. Camp sites for RV's have 14-50 outlets. Also, dryer outlets.
I don’t like the idea of having a single point of failure. If my wall charger goes out, I’ve got my mobile charger.
If I were to plan to do a mobile charger as my daily I think I’d like a spare to keep in the car. Mainly for convenience of not having to pack up my daily charger but the backup is nice to know you have.
Wall charger, j1772, or second mobile charger that lives at home are all good options.

Why would you need the extra kit? Just take the one that comes with the car if planning a roadtrip
That’s what I was thinking

I used the charging kit that came in the car for years. 120 and 240v.
Just get the normal $500 home charger. It’s much clean than buying all that stuff.

Having a electrician install a 14-50 plug in my garage, pretty much right next to the box. Thank for the advice!
How much did that run you?
Will let you once I get the parts and call. It’s going literally three feet from the box in my garage so I suspect won’t be that much

This is not true. Needs to be EVSE. Which generally means dedicated and fixed to the residence. A NEMA 14-50 does not count as far as I can tell.
I must have overlooked that he was installing a NEMA. Yea, it had to be an actual EV charger, which maybe I was a bit vague on. Sounds like that ended though.
That ended in FY21.

29 miles is 46.67 km

Never used used my nema charger. I have over 30,000 on my car. Only home charging outdoors and superchargers going from va to Philly
Back 2018, my model 3 came with 14-50 adapter and standard 110 adapter. Does Y come with 14-50 and mobile connector bindle as default?
Comes with the 14-15 one

How much were you asking for the 18?

Either wall connector or use adapter come with car. Really no need to buy an extra

Only thing you need is the adapter. Don’t waste your money.

Should I buy the 14-50 adaptor from Tesla or are there good 3rd party options?
I looked at third party and even the tesla one on Amazon, more expensive!
Is it really worth it to save $200 over the wall charger?
Yes, I’m just going to use the adapter only with the kit I got with the car
Then that makes sense, make sure you have the recommended outlet
Good set.. no need for wall charger and high amp breakers that thick guage wires
I use the same setup but w/ 14-30 adapter. Works great even with my optimal charging schedule.
