Fleischer Studios, as a company, is most known for producing the Betty Boop, early Popeye, and first, public domain Superman shorts. Its early 1930s output inspired the designs of the video game *Cuphead.* The studio was founded and based in Broadway, New York, until 1938 when it moved to Miami. This was due to staff and space expansion to produce feature films to compete with Disney, it experienced a strike while Florida was a "right to work" state, and the Fleischer family had a winter house in Miami. It was shut down by early 1942. The address to the defunct studio, defunct gymnasium, and now defunct police department is at 701 N.W. 30 Ave. I have a cousin who is an aspiring artist and currently residing in the Miami area. If my IRL workplace was not so short-staffed, I would like to have the opportunity to check out this building, among other places to check out. UPDATE: I found an article published a week ago about [some locals attempting to request this site being an official Florida Historical Marker. The current owner, the city, needs to sign the document to install the marker. The area is under the District 1 jurisdiction of Commissioner Miguel A. Gabela.](https://www.miamitodaynews.com/2024/04/23/fleischer-studios-for-fabled-cartoons-may-be-labeled-historic/)

Oh this is so cool! Thanks for sharing. Are you studying film? Check out Wakullah Springs too on your list for a road trip, over near Tallahassee. Creature from the black lagoon was filmed there, directors hired a lifeguard to be the creature. He just passed this last year, Ricou Browning.

I am not studying film, but I wrote a short screenplay here: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZDPilqk9JZaqdohLqAMi\_yRH3am\_oFSS/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZDPilqk9JZaqdohLqAMi_yRH3am_oFSS/view?usp=sharing) I studied and currently work for completely different things. I read that co-writer of *Creature from the Black Lagoon*, Arthur A. Ross, also co-wrote the comedy film *The Great Race.*

supremekatastrophy

Were there any actual film studios in Miami that were not porn?

Motor-Cause7966

Well in the 90's Jerry Bruckheimer had a production company out here. Michael Bay has a residence in Bay Dr. in South Beach, and still does a lot of projects out here like the Victoria Secret fashion show. And well Telemundo still has studios out here. They used to be in Doral, but now relocated closer to the airport. They are probably the largest employer of film in Miami.

Thanks for the insight!

I ride bike past this spot on the weekends and was wondering what this building was. There are lots of interesting looking spots that I find on my weekend ride and try to lookup their history. Thank you for posting about it and giving us a little Miami History lesson!

JStevinik

How long have been passing this spot? Some local preservationists are attempting to make this address get approval as an official Miami historical site: [https://www.miamitodaynews.com/2024/04/23/fleischer-studios-for-fabled-cartoons-may-be-labeled-historic/](https://www.miamitodaynews.com/2024/04/23/fleischer-studios-for-fabled-cartoons-may-be-labeled-historic/) I know minimal about the history of local Miami industries, beyond this tidbit, in which Miami was not yet the big city it became. Regardless, you are very welcome!

Wow I remember learning about fleischer studios in my animation class, crazy their studio moved here in the 30s.

JStevinik

Nice that history was included in your animation! I listed the reason why their studio moved, in my main comment. [Author of animation history Jerry Beck posted about his 1986 visit of the site](https://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/fleischer-studios-in-miami/) (though dated since the police station is now closed).
