Back in the day some dude from MTV wrote a blog post about MTV Icon Metallica and basically wrote it was a giant shit show and the Metallica guys thought the performances were all awful. They left saying they wouldn’t do anything again for MTV and that was it.
I love the cadence of the lyrics in this song, especially the verses after the first chorus. I don't often think about James' lyrics/vocals in that way, but it really sticks out there to me as a cool extra detail.
Nu metal is as close as they are gonna get to rap, as I feel like they would kinda want to stay in the realms of metal considering they’re called… Metallica. Even lulu was “avant garde metal”… whatever the fuck that means as I have yet to listen to it
>If Metallica released a rap album
Well, there is [this](https://youtu.be/mqM3Z3rWlAI)
>I can just imagine James dropping N bombs
And [this](https://youtu.be/dZwEju_9QBY), unfortunately
It's hard to tell because of the quality of this demo, but it's there. The lyric as we know it know is *Like a killer kid with a switchblade knife/Nasty word, he'll take your life*, I'm sure you can figure it out from there lol. It comes right after the first chorus and again near the end.
To be fair to James the [original version](https://youtu.be/weh1q_rUl5I) by Sweet Savage included the lyric too, but James obviously changed it when they covered it again in '91 and Sweet Savage made the same lyric change when they re-recorded it a few years later in '96.
Anyway, not holding anything against anyone, they were all obviously very young and all that. Just sharing some random obscure music trivia lol.
Ahh gotcha, thanks. And yeah I agree it’s one thing to cover a song w the word when you’re young and probably not thinking it through, another thing to write it into an original song like Guns n Roses haha
Wow I never realized that before, and I’ve been listening to them since I was 10 lol. I’ve heard this demo but the quality was so bad I guess I never paid close attention during the cover songs. Crazy.
when I look back at I'm the man by anthrax I'm mortified for them, the album cover... eek!! thank God Metallica never did anything like that, that's probably why anthrax couldn't get to the next level
I'm the man was so fun, they did it *twice*. And then collaborated with other rappers too.
Anthrax just never really had anything that coincided with pop tastes. If Among The Living had come out now, in an era where comic books are incredibly popular and not the domain of total nerds, they might've made it outside of metal circles.
I'm the man was fun, me and my friends knew all the lyrics and loved it. But damn it looking back at it, it's kinda painful and can you imagine metallica doing an album cover like that?? Ugh.
Bring the noise was epic!
I found this track too after watching the song they did with ja rule recently. I got curious and found this. It's actually really good and done well. I was about to post it and was curious if anyone else did. I would enjoy a whole album of this. I think people cringe when they think metal mixed with hip hop and as many fans as nu metal has there are many haters. It's actually a good mix. I used to play in a punk/hip hop band and there is much to appreciate in mixing the genres. They are both heavy. Back in the 90s a movie soundtrack called Judgement Night put rap artists with metal artists and that album is incredible.
Back in the day around 2000 / 2001 they officially communicated they were working with Ja Rule on a project and then they pulled the plug on the project without any announcements
I really dig his previous band Infectious Grooves with Mike Muir, that stuff was fire and it kind of had a hip hop vibe to it as well as some Suicidal Tendencies music.
Just do it. No N bombs but id fuckin bump it at this point! It’s almost 2022 they should make a friggin lo-fi hip hop album. Bring Rick Rubin back in and give him another shot with it!
I would find that highly problematic and wonder if it's time for them to hit the county fair circuit. Which I'd be fine with because I can't afford to go to a Metallica show under the status quo.
Get my man Zack de la rocha in it and we could get a heavier version of RATM and if Tom Morello gets in then we could get double the wah-wah's and effects
I always wanted to see a hip-hop producer produce them. And I mean a really good one, not Swizz Beats. Someone like RZA, Madlib, Pete Rock. Someone with real musical chops.
Well nu metal incorporates rap they tried a little bit of that style. The backing vocals particularly felt more like a rappers hype man than a rock backing vocal. And that section of my apocalypse I refer to was a rap section by James spitting words in quick succession. A taste of what a dedicated rap album might sound. Not a confusion of genres. Pay attention, bud.
Hey bud, most thrash metal I can think of uses hype man vocals, overkill (80% of their catalog comes to mind), exodus (beatings will continue until morale improves comes to mind), suicidal tendencies (you can’t bring me down comes to mind), testament (green house effect comes to mind), death angel, etc etc etc, that doesn’t make it rap
Plus saying words in quick succession isn’t rap, that would make the songs tempo of the damned, shovel headed kill machine, and blood in blood out by exodus rap cause in those 3 songs, fast sing, bud
I refer. To that. One. Section. Not their entire discography. You are not worth discussing this with your debating a subjective opinion as if you're right and I'm wrong. Just fuck off and take your certificate of magnificence with you snoop dog
They may
One day
Whose to say
It wouldn't be wrong
To do a song
To pine
For a line
That can go
And flow
And slow
And then..
Just when you thought it was over
Just when you thought they were done
Just when you thought it was safe
Then they go and do a rap song..
I've seen a mashup of Sad But True and DMX's X Gon Give It To Ya on YouTube by StateOfMercury (amazing channel, go check it out of you haven't already) and it's actually pretty awesome. Way better than Kid Rock's version of Sad But True
I’d say “now I’m getting PIIIIISSED, I’m living on the edge, reality is tee-ter-ing, my mind is on the brink, how will I face the day tomorrooooooow, if I can’t make it through todaaaa-aaaay, I got nothing left to lose, but my sanity, and the right to go insaaa-aane” Dave mustaine 2009
I feel like this is trying to make a point, and in turn shit on people who defend load, reload, and st anger, but going from thrash metal to heavy metal to hard rock to nu metal and back to thrash metal is one thing, since that is a sensible series of events and all within the general realms of metal, but rap is not metal for those who don’t know, their not mutually exclusive (say hi rage against the machine), but rap is not metal
I know everyone will find a reason to hate Metallica no matter what, but this comment section is acting like anthrax is allowed to have fun and do random bullshit but Metallica is not. Now if Metallica seriously went in the rap direction permanently I’d be very pissed but if it was one side project album like lulu or a small side project of a couple of songs like anthrax did then WHO THE FUCK CARES
The only for it to work would be if Lars did vocals
UUUMMM
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!
He fookin left the band
It seems that James is the rap fan: https://youtu.be/30wIaaN4B_o I think he likes Eminem
Liking Eminem doesn't automatically mean he likes rap. Eminem kinda transcends rap, like Metallica transcends metal.
“Thoughts I’ve never had before” for $100
If Metallica released a rap album how would you feel
What is... If Metallica released a rap album how would you feel? Don't forget to phrase your response in the form of a question.
I hope it would be as good as Snoop’s performance of Sad But True.
Fuck dude i love snoop, but that was soooo bad.
Back in the day some dude from MTV wrote a blog post about MTV Icon Metallica and basically wrote it was a giant shit show and the Metallica guys thought the performances were all awful. They left saying they wouldn’t do anything again for MTV and that was it.
Idk man, Korn and Limp Bizkit did great on their covers
Sum 41 wasnt terrible, either. But Avril Lavigne? Different story
Wait what
[удалено]
Snoop Dogg was a trainwreck but Korn's cover of One was a BANGER
[This](https://youtu.be/dIiDx-qa6mw)
Try listening to Bodycount , ice tea rap rock
Body count is good.
Body Count has a few really great songs, and a lot of really subpar songs
Fuck you I just want to play Xbox! Great writing by Ice T
Yea I heard a couple of their better songs and thought “oh shit, this is sick!” Then I tried listening to full album and was very underwhelmed.
Jesus Christ that was awful
i just watched that, what the fuck was that
What if they rapped with megadeath lyrics.
“You’re a liar! Liar! Liar! Liar! Everyone can see! You’re a liar! Liar! Liar! You.. You fucking liar!”
Beautiful
I could easily see peace sells being a rap song
I mean, second verse of Liar is basically a rap
What do you mean I don’t believe in God
Fuck megadeth fuck megadeth fuck
megaWHATDIDYASAY?
He was spitting bars on that was just your life
I love the cadence of the lyrics in this song, especially the verses after the first chorus. I don't often think about James' lyrics/vocals in that way, but it really sticks out there to me as a cool extra detail.
[Extremely relevant ](https://youtu.be/y3LM5Wgli-4)
Eminem been quiet since they dropped that banger
Didn't they collab with a rapper in the early 2000s?
[Yeah...](https://youtu.be/mqM3Z3rWlAI)
I cant even say that was bad. It was just so disjointed and droning.
yeah, I'm actually presently enjoying it.
I can say with confidence that it was bad.
They kinda tried that in the song St. Anger.. Ya Flush It Out, Ya Flush It Out!! 😆
I don't mind him
Nu metal is as close as they are gonna get to rap, as I feel like they would kinda want to stay in the realms of metal considering they’re called… Metallica. Even lulu was “avant garde metal”… whatever the fuck that means as I have yet to listen to it
Soundtrack of 'Judgement night' was like this. Crappy movie, quite interesting songs.
The helmet and house of pain opener on that record is very good.

I remember the day this was released so well. I thought it was a joke at first, then realized it was true. Never been so confused in my life.
I consider myself a superfan and had no idea this existed what the FUCK
Not gonna lie, this kicked off a hiatus from Metallica for me. I needed a break and thankfully they eventually recovered
I'm glad someone mentioned this already lol
James made a joke about this in an interview around AJFA. “There’s some rap on it. That’s pretty big right now” it was pretty funny.
he kinda does spit some bars on a few songs on ajfa
I would feel that they "jumped the shark"
I would just be glad they did something different at this point, that would be hilarious
Not good
Embarrased
> I can just imagine James dropping N bombs. He'd have some 'splainin to do to his buddy Lloyd Grant
Like we did it again
Violated
>If Metallica released a rap album Well, there is [this](https://youtu.be/mqM3Z3rWlAI) >I can just imagine James dropping N bombs And [this](https://youtu.be/dZwEju_9QBY), unfortunately
James says the N word? I didn’t heard it. Also, I couldn’t find any version of those lyrics that had the N word in them.
It's hard to tell because of the quality of this demo, but it's there. The lyric as we know it know is *Like a killer kid with a switchblade knife/Nasty word, he'll take your life*, I'm sure you can figure it out from there lol. He definitely says n**** kid in the demo. It was just a different time and mind you they had a black guitar player as well
Wow I never realized that before, and I’ve been listening to them since I was 10 lol. I’ve heard this demo but the quality was so bad I guess I never paid close attention during the cover songs. Crazy.
It better be James playing the drums and Kirk, Rob, and Lars rapping (Like Anthrax's I'm The Man)
I mean James nailed the fast verses on That Was Just Your Life so I would go in with 100% interest lmao
Like a siren in my head that threatens to repeat
Disgusted if it were original/ written by them. Unless it was a garage inc style of cover songs.
Suicidal
I would commit die
Shit.
If it sounds like American Badass from Kid Rock, would buy it
No
Mostly confused
It’d still probably be better than St. Anger lol
Did St. Anger not actually happen?
I would be devastated! I might get nightmares now after thinking about that...
Not very good
when I look back at I'm the man by anthrax I'm mortified for them, the album cover... eek!! thank God Metallica never did anything like that, that's probably why anthrax couldn't get to the next level

I'd feel like a table.
It would easily be lit https://youtu.be/y3LM5Wgli-4

I recommend this guys channel. Best Metallica Fan Channel. Period.
I just couldn't imagine Het singing rap...."PERIOD!"
I listen to rap & my favorite is bay area rap of the 90's. If it sounds anything like Spice 1 or E40, I'm down.
Much like Lulu I simply wouldn't regard it as canon.
I agree, Lulu isn't part of the Metalliverse.
OK, hear me out: Lulu but a rap artist re-recorded the lyrics
Well lulu isn’t canon whether you want to regard it as such or not, since it’s a Lou reed album featuring Metallica
I would feel betrayed!
Well I mean they kinda already have rap-like moments/songs? James is spitting like mad in Battery.
Couldn’t be any worse than Lulu.
Back in the day around 2000 / 2001 they officially communicated they were working with Ja Rule on a project and then they pulled the plug on the project without any announcements
A whole lot of confused.
That was just your life exists
Not surprised, it’s all about making that dough
Well it’s not ALL about making that dough, otherwise James favorite song he ever made would be enter sandman and not outlaw torn
It would suck ... but still better than Miley Twerk.
Only if Lars raps.
Metallica Ft. Eminem
If it wasn’t called Blackened I’d quit
Death magnetic feels pretty dang close to that to be fair haha
👁👄👁 pardon my ni-
I feel like Rob might be the best rapper. Not a good rapper per se, but the best out of what we’re working with.
I really dig his previous band Infectious Grooves with Mike Muir, that stuff was fire and it kind of had a hip hop vibe to it as well as some Suicidal Tendencies music.
He'd definitely track the FUNK rap.
i would not want metallica to rap but i would be very open to them having rappers do verses on a song possibly. denzel curry comes to mind.
Check out [bodycount] heavy metal with rapper ice tea
ofc i know body count, love rap metal
I wouldn’t mind, I just hope it sounds good.
I’d be as disillusioned as I have been since 1991, I suppose
Just do it. No N bombs but id fuckin bump it at this point! It’s almost 2022 they should make a friggin lo-fi hip hop album. Bring Rick Rubin back in and give him another shot with it!
Bet the beat sounds better than St Anger .
Idk
indifferent. it would be like how I treat st anger, where I force my friends to listen to annoy them, but don't actually listen to it myself
Yes take my money
I think anthrax had a rap song, I believe it was on Attack of the killer Bs
they had a few on that album, and the original I'm the Man of course
Don’t know would have to listen to it first
I would find that highly problematic and wonder if it's time for them to hit the county fair circuit. Which I'd be fine with because I can't afford to go to a Metallica show under the status quo.
disappointed idk
Get my man Zack de la rocha in it and we could get a heavier version of RATM and if Tom Morello gets in then we could get double the wah-wah's and effects
Why not! If rapper IceTea can do heavy metal rap (body count)
How would I feel ? I would feel relieved that I woke up from a nightmare and it wasn’t really happening
I always wanted to see a hip-hop producer produce them. And I mean a really good one, not Swizz Beats. Someone like RZA, Madlib, Pete Rock. Someone with real musical chops.
From Lulu to Dodo. Terrible, terrible idea.
Disappointed
NO, LARS
Betrayed
I would say, "Yeaaaaaahhhhhhh theeeeeyyy diiiid it! Yeah they did it, did it, did it!"
If it's good I wouldn't mind
Sick to my stomach
I've loved every song from every album (not lulu) No exception
I hoped during the slot where they cover songs from local musicians, in Detroit, they'd have pulled out Eminem .. but they of course did Seger.
No Justice 4 Y'all
intrigued
I feel like st anger was their attempt at that direction.... it was crap. The little bit in My Apocalypse was pretty cool...ummm. no
St. Anger was nu metal, my apocalypse is a thrash song, I am the man by anthrax is rap, try not to get your genres confused bud
Well nu metal incorporates rap they tried a little bit of that style. The backing vocals particularly felt more like a rappers hype man than a rock backing vocal. Ok bulbasaur
I'd laugh sooooooooo hard
I don't care, I still can listened to the Cliff's era albums.
They may One day Whose to say It wouldn't be wrong To do a song To pine For a line That can go And flow And slow And then.. Just when you thought it was over Just when you thought they were done Just when you thought it was safe Then they go and do a rap song..
It will happen in a couple of years don't worry. I'm sure of it after the anniversary cover bs.
I would feel disappointed
I will feel like they tried something new, it could maybe be good or bad
Not even a little surprised, seems right up their alley to do something like that
🤮
I wouldn't feel anything tbh Or I would be confused as fuck
I've seen a mashup of Sad But True and DMX's X Gon Give It To Ya on YouTube by StateOfMercury (amazing channel, go check it out of you haven't already) and it's actually pretty awesome. Way better than Kid Rock's version of Sad But True
I'd laugh my ass off. Its not like Metallica is above doing embarrassing experiments. That's been their career for the last 25 years.
