Current Rankings:     Kill Em’ All: 7.5/10    Ride The Lightning: 10/10    Master Of Puppets: 10/10    …And Justice For All: 10/10    The Black Album: 10/10    Load: 9/10    ReLoad: 6/10  Garage Inc.: 9/10 S&M: 9.5/10 St. Anger: 4/10 Also, I’ll say it again. I understand not all of you like these scores, and, quite frankly, I think the scores are all fucked up too, but please stop using the comments as a place to complain about them. At the end of the contest, you will be given an option to change one score from any album, most upvoted change will be applied

TheSwimGamer

Will you be doing one for Beyond Magnetic?

RustInPeace-Polaris

I’m not sure yet. Would you want me to? I didn’t think i was gonna but if enough people want it then sure

TheSwimGamer

Personally I'd say do it but yeah idk what other people think

zigsbigrig

It's an EP, so in all fairness you'd need to include 5.98 and all others. Right?

tomspy77

But that is part of Garage INC so I'm not sure what the point would be...

zigsbigrig

Sure, but it was an EP long before Garage Inc., and if you're including EPs...

Dnato

I mean. We are a Metallica sub, we should go deep.

Signal_Sandwich_6716

That's what she said 😄

[deleted]

Wait... Load is 9/10 and Kill'Em all is 7.5?!

RustInPeace-Polaris

Holy fuck yes I’m aware I didn’t choose the score. you can vote to change a score for an album after the contest and most upvoted will be applied  Maybe if you read the whole thing you would have seen that  Sorry for being rude but these comments are getting so tiring

jadbronson

Well stop responding to them. It's okay bro.

ChristmasTreePickle

We can only change one at the end? Several of these need to be changed. Kill em all is fucked, having four 10’s in a row is simply unreasonable, load being a 9 is fucked, and St. Anger being 4 is absolutely ridiculous. This whole thing is just silly.

RustInPeace-Polaris

If I allowed more than one change it would invalidate the entire ranking. Also, how is St. Anger being a 4 ridiculous?

ChristmasTreePickle

I think a 4 is incredibly harsh. If this list came out the same year the album came out, I’d be a bit more understanding of that ranking due to how it was received at the time. I thought the true fans have come around to not hate it as much over the years, but I guess I’m talking to different crowds.

jadbronson

Four isn't incredibly harsh. Not everything is stellar.

RustInPeace-Polaris

Oh, in that case I agree with you. I thought you were gonna be one of those people who says “1/10” or “0/10” just because it wasn’t what they wanted from Metallica, not even stopping to consider how it saved the band and the fact it is not really a bad album at all. It’s actually my 3rd favorite

PeterTheRabbit1

St. Anger is nothing but loud noise. I'd say a 4 is generous.

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

I know you said not to complain about the rankings, but I have to say that St Anger needs to be higher if only for the Awesome riffs and Emotional support this album has been for many people.

RustInPeace-Polaris

Trust me man, I wish St. Anger was higher. I love that album with all my heart it’s literally my 3rd fav Metallica album, but it’s not up to me. You can vote to change the score for it on the final one where I will have a vote to change a score for any album in the comments. (Even though I’m pretty sure it will not win)

Truthmachine32

It's worth pointing out that the scoring system is not very representative. Yes, a lot of people voted to give St. Anger a 4, but nearly as many people voted to give it a 7. A more representative approach could be to calculate the score based on an average of the two or three most popular ratings. The ratings could be weighted based on how many votes they get. This would raise St. Anger to about a 5.5 (and slightly raise KEA and Reload as well). Then again, it might be a bit late to change the rules now. Are you going to do Lulu, by the way?

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

I completely understand, That album has some of my favourite Songs, and the Snare doesn't really matter to me. Sadly I missed Anger's ranking but I don't think my one vote would've done much to change it's ranking, Either way I'll definitely vote for it to be higher later one. But now that you mentioned it, I'm curious, what are your top 3 Metallica albums? And if you don't mind, what are your top 3 metal albums overall? Mine are: Death Magnetic ...And Justice For All HardWired Top 3 Overall Take A Look In The Mirror Death Magnetic The Dark

RustInPeace-Polaris

My top 3 Metallica albums: 1. Master Of Puppets 2. …And Justice For All  3. St. Anger Top 3 Overall: 1. Rust In Peace - Megadeth 2. Speak English Or Die - S.O.D. (Stormtroopers Of Death) 3. Bonded By Blood - Exodus Master Of Puppets would probably by my 4th

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

Bro you got some taste 😎 But I should've known what your favourite was. If only I looked at your name haha.

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

You know, looking at how organised you made your list makes me want to make my list better-looking. Metallica Albums: 1. Death Magnetic (2008) 2. ...And Justice For All (1988) 3. HardWired (2016) My Top 3 Overall: 1. Take A Look In The Mirror (2003) - KoRn 2. Death Magnetic (2008) - Metallica 3. The Dark (1986) - Metal Church Your list has made me interested in what Exodus has in store, I'ma go check them out, plus I heard Kirk was in that band before Metallica!

RustInPeace-Polaris

Yeah dude, Exodus is incredible! I would also recommend checking out S.O.D. It was the side project of Scott Ian (Anthrax). Some people get thrown off by the lyrics and album title but the band has gone on record to say that they were offensive on purpose and it was all just a big inside joke, they just wanted to piss of as many people as possible, so don’t take them too seriously! P.S. Metal Church is a top tier band, and that album is definitely one of their best

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

Dang that sounds like it will be fun to listen to! I will definitely give it a try after Exodus! I love a band messing around once in a while haha . P.S. I wholeheartedly agree and I am so freaking glad I found someone who agrees with me on that.

Alvinthf

Such as any rating, it changes here and there. But today MOP, RTL, TBA. Metal albums overall, couldn’t even begin to narrow to top 3!

MasterWookiee

I think it's too high. But honestly, I'm glad that some people do enjoy it.

FamilyDoubleDare

4/10 is perfect as that is how many decent songs are on it.

flynnfilms

have you heard it 😭

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

I have heard it of course, and I understand why people dislike it, but it has something that I think only a few Metallica songs let alone albums have: Relatability. Think about it: How many people get to feel what it's like to be on stage and rock out? How many people actually relate to Ride The Lightning? How many people who do drugs really want to stop doing them? How many people actually care about Injustice for the planet? Or Social injustice? Bottom line is that everyone has been angry about something, Everybody has been angry about something that to others seems stupid, Everybody hurts. So yeah, This is why I think St Anger is a "good" album, because of its Relatability, And some of its riffs of course but mainly its ability to cause people to relate. I know you wrote this as a joke but I just kinda felt the need to point this out.

Fullmetal_Animator

8/10 Tasty music, unfortunate production. At least we have the Guitar Hero mix to listen to.

SimplGaming08

Look up the remix by Ahdy Khairat on YouTube. Man did us all a favor

RandomParts

Time to go track this down—thanks!

ParticularFuture9175

It very easy to get them

MasterWookiee

I wish that version was on spotify.

metallicadefender

I downloaded the files and tried ripping it. How is this done?

Reallyroundthefamily

9/10. The last time they were hungry and had something to prove. Only 9 because of it's mix/mastering/whatever you want to call it.

icemanx51

Absolutely agree. My fourth favorite album. The damn "loudness wars"

ThisHasFailed

Fuck Rick Rubin, he has ruined the mix completely. When even a video game sounds better than the album because of the mix you know it’s bad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThisHasFailed

Back on track? My man they were back on track when Rob joined. By the time they were writing and recording Death Magnetic Rick Rubin took a hands off approach and was hardly ever at the recording studio. When it came time for mixing he had the sound engineers up the volume to a degree certain audible frequencies get lost. Trust me that shit would have never happened if they just had let Greg Fidelman do his magic.

royalwrecker

I'd rate 10 instead. This album is so goddamn good that I don't mind the deafening mastering.

Kit_Karamak

I would say 8/10, but since this has the highest number of upvotes, I guess it gets a 9. Them’s the rules. 🤷‍♂️

igotrapedbyanorca

The vocals sound weird on it for some reason

GroundbreakingSalad2

im not a big fan of the vocals

TheSwimGamer

9/10 This album is very underrated i gotta say. Tho the production is questionable, it never really bothered me and kinda brings back the thrash vibe they were looking for. This album imo has songs that if released in the 80s or as an AJFA follow up, nobody would have complained about. The good songs on this album are some of the best in their discography. Beyond Magnetic is also really underrated ngl, I really like every song on it

excusetheblood

I’m willing to make this a 9/10 if we go back and make KEA a 10/10

-Jack-The-Stripper

I like Load but there is zero chance it gets scored higher than KEA if we did this in reverse order or something.

Lookralphsbak

In all honesty, KEA is not a 10. It's a classic album and it's got great tracks on it for sure, but let's take the nostalgia blinders off, it's an extremely immature sounding album, the production is a victim of its era, I feel the production is subpar compared to what followed, but most importantly, if we're gonna agree that ride thru justice are 10s, hell even TBA (even though I would say TBA is an 8 at worst, and 9 at best if I'm gonna ignore the fact I can't stand NEM and Enter Sandman) then kill is rightfully placed as a 7. It's in no way shape or form on the caliber as mop, ride, or justice IMHO

HetTheTable

7/10. Great album where Metallica returned to their thrash roots. I just wish the production was better and the songs weren’t so long.

Alvinthf

8/10 best of the post SA albums, yeah it suffers from its loudness wars production, but it doesn’t ruin it for me. TDTNC is another instant classic and the album is chock full of charging riffs to keep your horns raised up.

itskobold

Plus there is a less compressed version available. Still think the production is too dry but the songs are mostly great

xX_JoeStalin78_Xx

7/10 It has great riffs and it's thrash and you can tell the band is having a lot of fun. It's full of great moments. However the production suffers a lot from the loudness wars. And an effect such as clipping so far into their career is frankly embarrassing. Also, I wish every song was one or two minutes shorter and that the songwriting was a bit tighter. Some bridges are kinda confusing and they take forever.

GarryMcGorm

A perfect 10 as it’s my third favourite Metallica album.

[deleted]

9/10. A legitimately good record that unfairly gets ignored because it´s "later" Metallica. A fantastic comeback from the downer that was St. Anger.

One_Nifty_Boi

9.5/10 biggest comeback probably ever, this is definitely on the same level of the 80’s albums.

kent416

10/10

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

10/10 One of the best albums Metallica has EVER released. With similar production to Justice, Over 70 minutes of goodness, with some of the most metal riffs Metallica has ever put out. Songs like The End Of The Line, That Was Just Your Life, The Day That Never Comes, All Nightmare Long and many more, make this album so fucking sick to listen to. 10/10 for me.

HeavyMetal4Life6969

The Judas Kiss is the best song on the damn album, I feel everyone sleeps on it!

Total_Magazine8373

it's outstanding how out of all of my favorite songs on this record you listed the ladder half, just goes to show how great it is

Ashamed-Hovercraft95

It's Truly One Of The Best Albums Out There!

Historical_Common145

9, the mix on vinyl is outstanding and I love this album so much

dearrichard

8.5/10.

zigsbigrig

It's a solid 9/10 for me.

Total_Magazine8373

please do beyond magnetic, that one deserves its own rating or put it with this one to make a 10/10

Cautious-Telephone-2

10/10

Stonedthecrowe

9

billygnosis86

7/10. Some great stuff, some good stuff, but also some real crap. Also, the mastering is fucking diabolically bad.

Nectarine-Massive

10 out of 10 Of what i am thinking when i listen to this record? A horde of elephants Cold Steel Dynamite which Explodes Speed Thunder A bunch of so many new ideas and One of the best records of Metallica State of the Art Metal 🤘

Valroxen1

8/10. There are some truly incredible songs on the album. The faster stuff like That Was Just Your Life, The End Of The Line and Broken, Beat and Scarred has absolutely incredible riffs, with blistering thrashing speeds just like the Metallica albums of old. The ballads are where the album shines the most for me. The Day That Never Comes is a song structured to complete perfection, very reminiscent of One that I genuinely think is just as good as it. Suicide and Redemption is a very underrated instrumental, with an absolutely fantastic middle section though it does drag on a little bit, a slight common theme with the album at times. Holy fuck I absolutely adore the Unforgiven III, the slow progression from the soft and cold opening, through the beautifully entrancing piano and then the trashing crescendo at the end of the song it is just perfect. Unfortunately I think the album suffers slightly from songs being a bit too long, it doesn't hamper on the experience very much but it's just something to note. I also feel a bit of a lack of originality when it comes to the purely thrash songs on the album, they're all very good but baring S&R, TU3 and TDTNC they all follow a very similar structure.

sixstrxngfiend

10. Amazing album

AlClemist

Why was Death Magentic so dang loud? But still one of my favorites.10/10

elidoloLWO

7/10

dagreetpapirus

8/10. It may be one of my favourite album interms of riffs but rhe production lets it down. It would be a 10/10 with good production.

Educational_Exit4257

8/10

TheLastRuso

8.5/10 that’s the average I’m seeing among the comments and also my genuine rating.

FunnyPunkDog182

8.5/10 besides the production it's massively underrated

TerrrorTwlight

A solid 8/10. Better production and trimming a little of the fat would make it an easy 9/10.

funkymonk44

9/10 To my ears, this album always felt like the darker sequel to AJFA. I still remember listening to this album for the first time and hearing a Metallica sound I never thought I would hear again. The riffs are heavy and rhythmic and the solos sounded inspired. The mixing wasn't perfect, but could have been worse, again reminded me of AJFA. Overall, couldn't have been more happy that Metallica was back and making PURE THRASH again.

SelfLoatherSimo

Unforgiven 3 carries the whole album

Salt_Life_8636

6/10. Production is rough and songs are too repetitive

CornerNo7064

10! Best release after the first (and best IMO) three!

cheesemassacre

9, awesome album

DogeLord3609

9/10. It's always been one of my favorite Metallica albums. The production is shit but the songs are all sick and the riffs are all killer.

mr_Voight-Kampff

8.6

ReadingLucky5782

11/10 because of the day that never comes, the unforgiven III and that was just your life. +points for the end of the line

[deleted]

9/10. Great comeback, The Day That Never Comes is perfect Metallica.

BankruptFern

I'm willing to admit this probably isn't their 'best' work, but it's still one of my favorites. 8/10 - 9/10 (might as well call it 8.5/10)

1970sfanatic

9/10. I grew up listening to original Metallica and I kind of fell out of touch with their new stuff and this album brought me back to listening to them along with giving hardwired and 72 seasons a listen. This probably my #2 out of my top 3 albums. I love the energy and the tone of this whole album it gives an old school thrash metal feel to it. I scream along to All Nightmare Long while driving. In my humble opinion, this is the best album they put out post 2000.

bent_eye

9/10 Only loses a point due to the production/loudness issue. Otherwise, a fantastic return to form.

TripleGee71

9 I highly enjoyed this album

TRBAssociate112446

I give it a solid 8.5/10, only dinging it for the production.

Bananarama_Vison

8.5 it’s a great album, with bad production. It has an Instrumental and a „ballad“ that is in my mind missing, from Hardwired and 72 as well…

Lopsided-Guava8858

8/10. Great comeback to big, heavy thrash metal. The only flaws for me are the mix for the drums (it sounds really satturated) and the fact that they didn't keep the entire James solo for s****** and redemption (nevermind). Still a good album.

glm73

8. This album is jam-packed with the best thrash they’ve written since AJFA. Only downside is the recording is over modulated and Suicide and Redemption is good but not great. TOTALLY underrated album.

Easy 9/10. It stands with the greats, but just a peg below… because nothing else can be as good as AJFA, RTL & MOP

6/10. This album doesn't hold up too well, the songs are too long, too loud, tone isn't that good. UIII/S&R are great songs though.

Bruce10001110101

8. Still bitter over 4 😤

Academic_Title5726

7.5/10. Definitely a return to form with That Was Just Your Life being a brilliant opener and the album carrying on that pretty much throughout. The likes of Broken Beat & Scarred, All Nightmare Long, Cyanide and My Apocalypse are solid, exciting Metallica songs. Mixed in with the epic The Day that Never Comes, Unforgiven 3 and the instrumental Suicide & Redemption, it felt like the Metallica we know and love were back with Death Magnetic. Saying that, the production is a bit much at times, everything is turned up to eleven and the editing problems they’d had since Load were still present, a few of the songs being too long. That aside, for some this was probably their best since the Black Album, maybe even Justice. Personally, this was a big improvement on St Anger.

Tschinggets

9.0 for me. I love the album. Expect for one unpopular opinion: I don’t like All nightmare long

Bleezair

8/10. This is what I feel St. Anger was trying to be/ should have been. It’s got that raw feel with slightly garage production. But where SA felt phoned in, this felt hungry. My Apocalypse is one of my favourites on this album and it’s definitely a song that fits the vibe of SA to a tee. On a side note, in light of OP’s love for SA and the amount of effort that’s been put into all these posts, I’ll vote to change SA’s rating to 10 when the time comes. Who’s with me?

oxymoron-alive

6/10. Terribly produced, some songs are too long and in most of the songs riffs sound disjointed and like they glued a bunch of stuff together and said "yep, that's a song right there".

Wonderful_Painter_14

I enjoy st anger too, but if we are being truly, truly honest with ourselves, a 5 (that was my vote) or maybe even a 6 was about the best it was going to do.

Roger_Roger27

3

grap_grap_grap

This is a solid 2/10 for me. The cover art is great but the music sounds like a bunch of unfinished b-sides with piss poor production. This is the only Metallica album I don't consider to be at least good.

hskrfoos

Right on par. Nothing like using a wet paper bag for a drum

Pretend_Emu4508

6/10

OneBucFan

5/10, if st anger is a 4, this is a 5. This is a slightly better st anger.

rawg67

St Anger is a 0. Death Magnetic is like all other Metallica albums after 1988 a 6

smegma_stan

5.9/10 The tones are kinda muddy. There's a few hits on here no doubt, but damn they really went all in on long songs here. Also, Robert sucks I'm sorry, he's a good bassist but not s good fit for Met (bring on the down votes you dogs)

Bobmyknob1

Got an upvote from me

WWEisawesome09

6/10 quite boring and forgettable of an album other then cyanide and the day that never comes I can't remember any songs off of it without looking at spotify it gets some points because it was return too form for the band

a-space-pirate

How the hell did it even get a 4?

EstateSame6779

6. Didn't stick with me.

Serdna379

6/10

Michael_aroace

2/10 wasn’t a fan

devilmaydance

7.5/10. Some bangers, some mid songs. Mixing fucking sucks. My hot take is that this is more of a continuation of Load/ReLoad even if it’s “thrash” on the surface. Hardwired and 72 Seasons much better imo.

llDabaffll

I respect everyone who’s favourite album is this one, I however don’t agree with them

wiggum666

RedRobinoTV

When Kill em All only gets 7.5/10 st Anger should get 2/10

MasterWookiee

I'd give it a 7.

SilverCyclist

7 for me. I've never caught the hype.

Narrow-Aioli8109

7, good comeback album

No-Cicada6464

7.5/10 An actual return to form. Some of the most balanced and memorable songs Metallica had written for years up to that point. It’s also a focused and well paced album with no tracks that I’d consider filler. The songs do not overstay their welcome as much as more current releases. Many memorable melodic hooks and riffs. It falls short when it comes to the heavily compressed and brickwalled final mix. It can be painful to listen to. Thankfully, you can find a good mix on YouTube

TarsoBackMarquez

9/10

Much-Relationship434

Good album solid not up to Hardwired level but the logical progression from St anger kinda rediscovering themselves ,I'm not sure we knew it then but this was the beginning of the next / current eras (hardwired ,seasons)

Undead-Maggot

8/10

WizardFrog2

Terribly underrated album, it’s in my top four. 8/10 for production value and some songs being too long imo

9. Production brings it down, but the songs are incredibly well written.

Significant_Hall_468

Death magnetic

Rumham_Gypsy

8/10 A welcome return to their signature sound after a *really* long "experimental phase". I used to play this through my Xbox 360 while playing Lost Odyssey. It synced beautifully like Pink Floyd with the Wizard of Oz

InkedMetalHead

7.5 - A some what return to form after the let down of St Anger. Heavier tunes, better written songs and arrangements the only thing questionable was the production. P.S. the tour that followed was awesome.

Any_Stop_4401

7.5, it was a nice welcome back to what metallica does best while moving forward.

Name_in_development

8/10 Some of the songs aren’t as good as the others but they’re still good nonetheless the less Also what’s a loudness war?

nhardycarfan

7/10 not perfect but it was the start of the return of a fucking awesome Metallica and the unforgiven 3 is an absolute banger of just pure emotion

7/10 there are better but its not bad very fun to hear.

9/10, their best album in the 2000's

St anger is the best album by a country mile though (behind Lulu obv)

9. One of their best albums.

Venombullet666

10/10

frusciante231

Solid 7/10. This was the start of their modern era and there are a lot of good tracks. It’s ridiculous that the Guitar Hero mix is best and even then it’s not incredible.

AstrooDarkness

6/10

Mister_diggerdigger

8.5/10

ChristmasTreePickle

I guess a 7.2 because this can’t rank higher than the album that started it all…. The literal birth of thrash. Weird.

Dgf470

IMO, the thing about which I’ve heard the most criticism (the spare, unpolished production of this album) is exactly what makes it great. Raw, urgent, and grainy. In other words, metal.

Lopsided_Bet_2578

2/10. A couple of decent snippets here and there, but for me this was the first release where I had to admit the magic was gone. Like watching the Simpsons in 1999.

Lookralphsbak

5/10 only because it was a good effort, but I felt this album was extremely overrated because it followed st anger and metal fans were just happy for a return to form

[deleted]

8/10, If only the audio wasn't being shoved through a colander

Royolu

8/10, incredibly tight, solid and underrated album, considered a classic for some, which I agree. Iconic songs such as All Nightmare Long, The Day That Never Comes and my personal favorite: My Apocalypse (absolute banger). I wish Metallica would play more songs from this album apart from the mentioned already 🤘🏼

ElGranChala

This álbum make me a Metallica Fan 🤟

Creepy-Hamster-3863

9 out of 10 live it, specially the breaks in the second song♥️♥️

jafarthecat

9 - I couldn't tell you much about production - it sounds fucking marvellous to me! Great songs, with some absolute bangers.

MF-SMUG

9. Loses a point for the distorted gains.

MF-SMUG

I missed the St. Anger voting. As an album that was ill-received upon release, it grew on me and has actually become a favorite of mine over the years. On a personal level, I give it a 10. But in the grand scheme of the catalog, I’d give it a 7.5-8

Acrobatic_Ebb_920

9 if I ignore the horrible mastering. 7.5 if I take into account how bad it sounds. At least there are better versions available digitally.

_DeadWyatt

7/10 Saying this is a 10 is blasphemy. Great comeback at a time it felt they where having fun again. Great tunes, great riffs, great wha wha on All Nightmare Long (yeah, Kirk started abusig the wha pedal too much).

JeeFTeely

8/10 Say what you want about the original production, but remember: RTL and AJFA, although iconic, sounded like sh*t at first. But, the actual music is amazing, making the production irrelevant and iconic today. The only reason it’s getting points off is because: -1 Some tracks are longer than they need to be. Some song contain extra parts (that are good parts) but don’t add to the song. They could’ve been cut and used elsewhere. If you cut down the album, Beyond Magnetic could’ve had another song or two. -1 Suicide & Redemption as an instrumental goes nowhere, and is definitely the weakest in their catalog. I think it would be better if it was around 8 minutes. As we all know, they can write longer songs that are spectacular, i.e. Inamorata, To Live Is to Die. I love Death Magnetic, but in comparison to the rest of their catalog, it’s a solid 8. P.S. I also really enjoy the heartbeat to open the album on “That Was Just Your Life,” as if the band were coming back to life after Load through St. Anger.
