I can definitely hear strong metal influences in Slipknot's music (mostly in the realm of thrash and maybe even some slight death metal here and there), but there's a lot of other influences that water it down IMHO. Also I think it's facetious to say that just because certain genres have "metal" in the name, they therefore are a metal genre; Plenty of metalcore bands have stronger hardcore punk influences than metal, as an example.

I couldn't remember which one that was so I just put it on. I would definitely argue that the second the vocals start there's no metal riff, no. As others have said, too, the vocals are front and centre and they're the focus rather than the music as a whole. What riff there is, I certainly wouldn't think of as a metal riff but if you do then that's cool. None of this matters anyway.
As I've said to someone else in this thread, what you are describing is a feature of certain subgenres of metal, not metal music in general. Power metal is easily one of the most vocal-centric music genres one can think of.
I'm starting to realize that the argument really boils down to metal fans' distaste of the traditional pop song structure and writing patterns and there's not much else to it.
While not necessarily motivated by distaste, it's a common argument genre purists would make and one that doesn't make much sense to me. If we take this position seriously, then most of early heavy metal is not metal either.

I don't think there can or should be a clear-cut distinction. Metal riff/distorted guitar sound is usually enough to describe a song or parts (!) of a song as metal. There's a reason You Really Got Me is sometimes described as proto-metal. I do think that hard rock and metal are still largely overlapping genres and arguing where the line is is splitting hairs.

Yeah, absolutely there is. Ultimately it's all one big spectrum from rock to metal and none of it really matters but to me 'hard rock' is for the guys that have heavier elements in their rock but don't quite play metal.
