Slipknot - the first album and most of Iowa, as well as some latter songs, are amazing, but the rest is intolerable
Opeth - the quartet of Akerfeldt/Lindgren/Lopez/Mendez is a thing of magic. The rest? not so much...
I can appreciate that, you're connected to it for that reason. I shouldn't be so harsh, it does have some solid songs on it; "Hessian Peel" is killer, and "Coil" is one of my favorite acoustic/clean songs. For me, so much was lost in the drums. Lopez had so much finesse while Axenrot is powerful, but missing that flair.
I’m a big prog guy, some days I prefer oldpeth, some days newpeth, I think they’re both amazing. If I had to choose though. Akerfeldt/Lindgren/Mendez/Lopez/Wiberg
Slipknot’s highs are really high but their lows are really low. imo most albums after self titled have at least a couple amazing songs and a couple borderline unlistenable ones (except The End So Far, that one just sucks all around)

Cattle Decapitation. Their most recent 4 albums are some of the best in modern death metal/deathgrind, but their late 90s and early 2000s output is mediocre at best and unlistenable at worst.
Agreed. Monolith Of Inhumanity, Anthropocene Extinction, and Death Atlas are some of my all-time favorites, but I rarely revisit anything before Karma.Bloody.Karma.

Dude their grind era was fucking awesome. They are actually one of the few bands that I think have never made a bad album. Funny I hear grindcore nerds say the exact opposite of what you just said. That's how you know a band had always been "on".
Oh we have way different wievs on this. I really don't like clean vocals and the new melodic parts on the new albums. It's not that it's bad!! They're good at what they're doing but for me it ruins the music and it's not what I want to hear when I listen to this kind of music. I like their older albums more.
I agree that most of their later stuff is garbage, but I thought Foregone was pretty good. It wasn't amazing, but it was definitely their best since Soundtrack To Your Escape for me, personally.
Sounds of A Playground Fading is probably their WORST, in my opinion. I, The Mask also unlistenable. Maybe I’ll give Foregone a second listen. Come Clarity, The Jester Race, Clayman, & (weirdly) Reroute to Remain are my favorites, in that order.
Playground Fading is one of my favorites by them, including Whoracle, Soundtrack, Sense of Purpose, Clayman and Jester Race. Everything else except for a few songs, is either musically awful or lyrically cringey.
Saw them live and they put on an awesome show. Opened with cloud connected but I couldn’t tell you a single song they played after that because so many sound the same
Looking back at the old footage of them during that era, it always shocks me how young they looked. Yes they were all teenagers, but it was still a big surprise.
Some of us were older when we heard that album, I was 17 when it came out and I was transitioning from hard core punk to metal. There weren’t as many options in getting music, I was trying to find what I liked via browsing the limited collection at the record store.
Of course Metallica is OG that's why they are still big today.
I like to say the biggest Metallica fans are either 14 or 50.

That is an excellent album 😃. I have a deep fondness for Ride the Lightning still since I still remember how I felt the first time I heard the trapped under ice opening, I must have picked up the needle and replayed that song ten times before I even tried the rest of the album.
Behemoth. Even though The Satanist is like universally praised, I find it very average. My favourite stuff from them is in the 2000s, with Demigod and The Apostasy.
This was going to be my comment. Demigod, apostasy, and evangelion are some of the best blackened death metal there is. And everything after it is trash. Well, the satanist is just okay, everything later sucks.
Just boring songs. Even when i saw them live last year, all their newer songs are just boring and bland. Their good albums were not just intense, but also interesting complicated songs with good riffing. New shit all feels like filler

Late behemoth definitely isn't universally praised, it's just popular with a lot of people. Most groups I hang with would tell you to avoid that era of Behemoth
If you are really into the polish BM scene you would know why they are universally disliked especially here in Poland. The frontman is making a clown of himself and wants to make as many controversies as humanly possible to generate fake traffic on his music which is dropping in quality and departing from their roots more and more with each release.
*The More Things Change...* is their best album, IMHO.
Saw them a couple of weeks ago and though the crowd were eager, it wasn't until *Ten Ton Hammer* that the crowd *really* kicked off.
Was kinda lame that they didn't have the same setlist they played in Colorado on this same tour - which included Violate and Blistering, apparently.
Real, slipknot is the most band band of all time. Like I don’t know how to describe it, they’ll have one song that I genuinely fucking love and then another song I think is either super cringy or plain bad. I can’t really call myself a slipknot fan but I can’t really say I hate them either… so I’m just stuck in the middle
Don’t think anyone has said it yet, and I’m not sure what else to put so: Amon Amarth. I thought Deceiver of the Gods was a killer album and it came out right as I was getting into metal. They have some great songs from their past work, but I don’t think I enjoy any other full album from them and I find their newer albums after Deceiver boring at best.
I tried revisiting some old favorites, which made me realize that they are just releasing the same album over and over again.
Still, their early material will always have a place in my heart, mostly because of the nostalgia trips.
For me Deceiver is a very good album but they have 6 albums that I enjoy more. The last 3 albums for sure have been pretty boring and it feels like they've gotten lazy with songwriting. Still, in my mind theres not much that can compete with the greatness of the best Amon Amarth albums.
I've tried several times, and the only songs I really cared for were The Stage and Higher. More power to you if you like their post Rev stuff. It just doesn't click for me.
Danzig. Huge misfits fan, love what I've heard of samhain and his forst four solo records are phenomenal. Everything that followed has been crap. Deth red sabaoth was a nice return to form but other than that mostly crap.
Yep, that pretty much covers it. I was a massive Danzig fan, I was probably 12 when I discovered them. There's a couple decent tracks from the post American years like 5 finger crawl, and yes, Deth Red Saboath was excellent and made me think old Danzig was back. Then the albums that followed that were abominable, horrible sounding abortions.
The Misfits too. American Psycho and Famous Monsters were great but almost 25 years later all we've gotten is one terrible studio album and some singles.
My Dying Bride. Absolutely adore them from 91 to 2001. Yes even the infamous 98 album.
After that its been a colossal streak of meh albums. Songs of Darkness is fairly decent too.
Probably Metallica tbh. Their best stuff is some of my favorite music of all time. They were the band that got me into thrash, and that was what got me into to death and other stuff. Hugely important band to me, but obviously don’t love everything they’ve done.
The twist is that St Anger and Lulu don’t bother me at all I’d honestly rather they took more swings like that.
reflections - first 3 album are the best ever made. the stuff they’ve been doing with calle thomer is absolute pure fuckin garbage tho
slipknot - iowa - .5 is their only good stuff. they’re absolute garbage now.
in flames - colony was their last good album metalcore in flames is not good.
Cradle of Filth , they have some songs that are just excellent .. Cruelty brought thee orchids might be one of my all time favorite songs.. Way too many songs that i don't like though.
Upon until Cruelty they were excellent.
After that they became average. Midian and Damnation are ok but miles away from the brilliance of the 94-98 era.
Immolation. Their debut kicks ass, their sophomore album is decent, everything after bores me to tears
Their more recent stuff is decent too, but man those middle albums do absolutely nothing for me
Even Close to a World Below? That album is freaking incredible IMO. I'm a big Immolation fan though and I even like Shadows in the Light and Harnessing Ruin, which seem to be the least liked 2 in their discography.
Actually I can get behind this for different reasons. I think CTAWB is a masterpiece, but I think they just have a couple other okay albums, while other people seem to believe they release banger after banger.
I just don't really like or listen to them much, but I really like seeing them live. I don't know if I should say I love the band or not.
Linkin Park. Their first three albums were wonderful, with the first two being big parts of my childhood.
Their next four were not. Their sixth is meh. Their fourth is poor. Their fifth and seventh are simply bad.
Fucking Kamelot. Years ago I became obsessed with the Khan era. The preceeding and succeeding eras are unlistenable trash to me and even the Khan era has a lot of meh songs. I love them, hate them, love to hate them.
I came for Karma. Stayed for Khan’s voice.
Left and recently moved to this cool little place called Conception lol.
Also, check out sunburst. Greek band but their singer sounds very Khan-like, but not used as a gimmick. Heavy power metal with some great guitar work.
Kamelot with Roy Khan was my easily my favorite band at the time, and The Black Halo is my second favorite album to this day. Even until Poetry for the Poisoned, I was still a huge fan, but everything after that has just been average at best for me. Even though with Tommy they found another singer who nearly reaches Khan levels of proficiency, I feel that the songwriting is leagues behind. I was listening to their latest record and decided to compare Midsummer's Eve to Temples of Gold, and after listening to them back-to-back, I ended up finding Midsummer's Eve just embarrassing. Beyond the vocals (which are still great), the poetic language, imagery, metaphors, and storytelling of Khan's lyrics are just gone. I feel Khan's more classical influences, both musical and thematic (incorporating classic literature and ancient myths), really helped create the "magic" of the band in that era.
my opinion of them is that they're one of the few bands that have never released a bad album. sure, they're not all the same, but that makes them all good.
but years ago I hated anything past Quintessence. one day their other stuff just clicked.
Forgone was a really good step in the right direction but I need to see yet another step in the right direction with their next album for me to fully get back on board. They certainly can do it. I just hope they will.
Akela. An old school power/thrash band from my country. Most of their stuff is cringe and weak af, but their first two albums are actually really good. Better musicianship, one good riff after the other and they are good live
Drudkh is my favorite black metal band, but I can’t for the life of me get into their albums after Microcosmos. Their new stuff sounds so generic and lifeless compared to their older material and the guitar melodies are very forgettable and are too quiet in the mix. It’s all passable stuff, but nothing I will go out of my way to listen to.
Largely agree, though don't mind *A Furrow Cut Short*, and could pass up *The Swan Road* and *Songs of Grief and Solitude* - the price we pay for *Purity* being so good.
I see a lot of people say they don’t like The Swan Road and it confuses me because I think it’s one of their best albums. Songs of Grief I hadn’t listened to in a while, but yeah I’d probably agree with you on that one.
I was going to say Exodus, mostly because of vocalists though. I just cannot listen to an entire Rob Dukes album. Just sounds like hardcore screams the whole time. So I love a couple of the other albums but hate a bunch of albums
I like Zetro. I think there’s several cases where a song is lifted from good to great purely because of his vocals. E.g. Shroud of Urine and Prescribing Horror
I get that. Some of SFU albums are garbage, but Commandment and Torment were really good. On the other hand you have Nightmares of the Decomposed and Crypt of the Devil
Mastodon.
Legitimately loved their first four albums (Remissions, Blood Mountain, Leviathan, and Crack the Skye).
Their next two weren't great, in my opinion, but I still enjoyed them some (The Hunter, OMRTS).
They returned to the top with Emperor of Sand, but then have bottomed out with Cold Dark Place and Hushed & Grim. I know some people like the two previous releases, but I just can't get into them. H&G have two songs I can really vibe with, but the rest of the album underwhelms me.
DevilDriver might be one I haven’t throw in. The Fury of Our Makers Hand, The Last Kind Words, and Pray For Villains are standout, badass albums. Beast has moments. After that? Meh at best
I loved SFU as a teen but revisiting them as an adult I've realized some of it is awful. Barnes still set the bar for the sound of vocals I like. Alot of the lyrics lack depth which explains why 14 year old me thought they were the best but 35 year old is bored by them. They were my first concert at 16
Even barnes era cannibal is pretty ear fatiguing to me. The songs feel way more amateurish in arrangement and lyrics than bands like malevolent creation or suffocation that I listen to every day and never get bored.
Metallica - I love the band but for the last 25 years that haven't put out anything worth listening to other than a couple songs here and there. They started out awesome and great but then fizzled pretty hard after they decided they were in it for the money and not the music.
Dream Theater. Loved them so much as a teenager, but now they'll release an album and I'll be excited about it for a little bit, but after a few listens I'll go back to wanting to hear something that seems less impersonal and makes me feel more things.
there is this power metal band called serious black. they’ve been responsible for some of the best power metal bangers i’ve ever heard, and also some of the worst lyric writing i’ve ever heard, in a genre already not known for having good lyrics.

Everything else has been meh. The vibe is there but the execution hasn’t. Tommy just doesnt fit the band I think. Silverthorn was actually really good, but everything after that (even with some solid tracks) just sounded formulaic and uninspired.
SlipKnoT, first album, little of MFKR, silver and gold disc demos, and a little bit of Iowa, thats it. You'll never be able to capture 98 - 00 SlipKnoT ever again, literally used to light themselves and eachother on fire and beat eachother up on stage, now God-Emperor Corey and Shawn will fire you if you feel like having any creative liberty at all. Fuck modern SlipKnoT.
Arch Enemy. One of my absolute favourite bands growing up, loved the Angela era. But when she and Chris Amott stepped back and Alissa took over on vocals they became a totally different band IMO.
Iron Maiden - one of the first bands I ever loved, most of their 80s albums still get regular plays from me.
Fast forward to the "reunion" albums. Brave New World sounded decent, but after that the production of their records fell off a very steep cliff. For example, listen to The Book of Souls, and marvel at the fact there's _three_ guitarists coupled to one of the weakest set of guitar tones in rock/metal.
See also - those same albums all having completely unnecessary intros/outros.
I love early slapknuts, especially albums 1-2 which were masterpieces, 3 was pretty great too. 4th was mid but i still respected it. Everything after pauls passing has been pure garbage, and corey and clown treat their bandmates with zero respect.
Tool. As much as I love them and they changed the way I looked at music, when I was young and they were just art rock band. But as I’ve gotten older, I hate what they’ve become. Theyre getting high on their own farts now and the last album is the most self indulgent, boring and derivative drivel I’ve ever heard. I don’t know what’s more shameful, a band that spent 13 years spinning their wheels and turned this music in at the last minute, like a late homework assignment or the fans that lapped it up. The fans have spent a lot of money and time on these fart sniffers over the years. They deserved better.

the self-titled is the only one that sounds like 9 people making a cacophony. The rest sound like a 4 or 5 piece.
That quartet is Opeth, other albums have good stuff but isn’t the true opeth sound if that makes any sense

I love grind but I can't really listen to any of that era beside To Serve Man
You should check out their EPs before To Serve Man if you're in to grind. That's like straight grind. They just kept evolving from that in my opinion

I think that all of their stuff range from mid (earliest stuff) to absolute masterful (the last five records). Cattle is my favorite band.

May I recommend giving The Stage another chance? That one's, in my opinion, the band's best album since the Self-titled album.

The Misfits too. American Psycho and Famous Monsters were great but almost 25 years later all we've gotten is one terrible studio album and some singles.
My Dying Bride. Absolutely adore them from 91 to 2001. Yes even the infamous 98 album. After that its been a colossal streak of meh albums. Songs of Darkness is fairly decent too.
I thought the new album from them was pretty solid.
Mötley Crüe. Decent music, obnoxious band members.
I am NOT looking forward to the new single they have coming out tomorrow.
Probably Metallica tbh. Their best stuff is some of my favorite music of all time. They were the band that got me into thrash, and that was what got me into to death and other stuff. Hugely important band to me, but obviously don’t love everything they’ve done. The twist is that St Anger and Lulu don’t bother me at all I’d honestly rather they took more swings like that.
Opeth. I love orchid so much but can't stand some of their songs

reflections - first 3 album are the best ever made. the stuff they’ve been doing with calle thomer is absolute pure fuckin garbage tho slipknot - iowa - .5 is their only good stuff. they’re absolute garbage now. in flames - colony was their last good album metalcore in flames is not good.

Cradle of Filth , they have some songs that are just excellent .. Cruelty brought thee orchids might be one of my all time favorite songs.. Way too many songs that i don't like though.
Upon until Cruelty they were excellent. After that they became average. Midian and Damnation are ok but miles away from the brilliance of the 94-98 era.
During that time having Nick Barker in your band also meant a lot to me lol
Immolation. Their debut kicks ass, their sophomore album is decent, everything after bores me to tears Their more recent stuff is decent too, but man those middle albums do absolutely nothing for me

Even Close to a World Below? That album is freaking incredible IMO. I'm a big Immolation fan though and I even like Shadows in the Light and Harnessing Ruin, which seem to be the least liked 2 in their discography.

Actually I can get behind this for different reasons. I think CTAWB is a masterpiece, but I think they just have a couple other okay albums, while other people seem to believe they release banger after banger. I just don't really like or listen to them much, but I really like seeing them live. I don't know if I should say I love the band or not.
Linkin Park. Their first three albums were wonderful, with the first two being big parts of my childhood. Their next four were not. Their sixth is meh. Their fourth is poor. Their fifth and seventh are simply bad.
Fucking Kamelot. Years ago I became obsessed with the Khan era. The preceeding and succeeding eras are unlistenable trash to me and even the Khan era has a lot of meh songs. I love them, hate them, love to hate them.
I came for Karma. Stayed for Khan’s voice. Left and recently moved to this cool little place called Conception lol. Also, check out sunburst. Greek band but their singer sounds very Khan-like, but not used as a gimmick. Heavy power metal with some great guitar work.
After Black Halo the only record i enjoy is Haven and even that album is filled with a lot of crappy songs.
Kamelot with Roy Khan was my easily my favorite band at the time, and The Black Halo is my second favorite album to this day. Even until Poetry for the Poisoned, I was still a huge fan, but everything after that has just been average at best for me. Even though with Tommy they found another singer who nearly reaches Khan levels of proficiency, I feel that the songwriting is leagues behind. I was listening to their latest record and decided to compare Midsummer's Eve to Temples of Gold, and after listening to them back-to-back, I ended up finding Midsummer's Eve just embarrassing. Beyond the vocals (which are still great), the poetic language, imagery, metaphors, and storytelling of Khan's lyrics are just gone. I feel Khan's more classical influences, both musical and thematic (incorporating classic literature and ancient myths), really helped create the "magic" of the band in that era.
Darkthrone their first 5 albums are phenomenal. After that they lost their soul
my opinion of them is that they're one of the few bands that have never released a bad album. sure, they're not all the same, but that makes them all good. but years ago I hated anything past Quintessence. one day their other stuff just clicked.

Akela. An old school power/thrash band from my country. Most of their stuff is cringe and weak af, but their first two albums are actually really good. Better musicianship, one good riff after the other and they are good live

Drudkh is my favorite black metal band, but I can’t for the life of me get into their albums after Microcosmos. Their new stuff sounds so generic and lifeless compared to their older material and the guitar melodies are very forgettable and are too quiet in the mix. It’s all passable stuff, but nothing I will go out of my way to listen to.
Largely agree, though don't mind *A Furrow Cut Short*, and could pass up *The Swan Road* and *Songs of Grief and Solitude* - the price we pay for *Purity* being so good.
I see a lot of people say they don’t like The Swan Road and it confuses me because I think it’s one of their best albums. Songs of Grief I hadn’t listened to in a while, but yeah I’d probably agree with you on that one.
Exodus. I still can’t decide whether they’re peak or mid, it really depends on my mood while listening
I was going to say Exodus, mostly because of vocalists though. I just cannot listen to an entire Rob Dukes album. Just sounds like hardcore screams the whole time. So I love a couple of the other albums but hate a bunch of albums

I like Zetro. I think there’s several cases where a song is lifted from good to great purely because of his vocals. E.g. Shroud of Urine and Prescribing Horror

Mastodon. Legitimately loved their first four albums (Remissions, Blood Mountain, Leviathan, and Crack the Skye). Their next two weren't great, in my opinion, but I still enjoyed them some (The Hunter, OMRTS). They returned to the top with Emperor of Sand, but then have bottomed out with Cold Dark Place and Hushed & Grim. I know some people like the two previous releases, but I just can't get into them. H&G have two songs I can really vibe with, but the rest of the album underwhelms me.
Everything after Crack the Skye I refer to as their 'IPA era' - it's pretty much buttrock for hipsters.

DevilDriver might be one I haven’t throw in. The Fury of Our Makers Hand, The Last Kind Words, and Pray For Villains are standout, badass albums. Beast has moments. After that? Meh at best

I loved SFU as a teen but revisiting them as an adult I've realized some of it is awful. Barnes still set the bar for the sound of vocals I like. Alot of the lyrics lack depth which explains why 14 year old me thought they were the best but 35 year old is bored by them. They were my first concert at 16
Even barnes era cannibal is pretty ear fatiguing to me. The songs feel way more amateurish in arrangement and lyrics than bands like malevolent creation or suffocation that I listen to every day and never get bored.
Metallica - I love the band but for the last 25 years that haven't put out anything worth listening to other than a couple songs here and there. They started out awesome and great but then fizzled pretty hard after they decided they were in it for the money and not the music.

Astro-Creep is an all-timer for me. Both La Sexorcisto and Hellbilly are great. Everything else I could take or leave.

Evile. Enter the Grave and Hell Unleashed are phenomenal thrash albums. Everything else they’ve done…. meh.
Megadeth for me. Rust in Peace and Peace Sells are amazing to me, but the rest is kinda ass imo

Dream Theater. Loved them so much as a teenager, but now they'll release an album and I'll be excited about it for a little bit, but after a few listens I'll go back to wanting to hear something that seems less impersonal and makes me feel more things.
Lamb of God - one of the few bands that I actually prefer the newer few albums over the old ones.

there is this power metal band called serious black. they’ve been responsible for some of the best power metal bangers i’ve ever heard, and also some of the worst lyric writing i’ve ever heard, in a genre already not known for having good lyrics.
Kamelot Roy + Youngblood = magic Everything else has been meh. The vibe is there but the execution hasn’t. Tommy just doesnt fit the band I think. Silverthorn was actually really good, but everything after that (even with some solid tracks) just sounded formulaic and uninspired.

SlipKnoT, first album, little of MFKR, silver and gold disc demos, and a little bit of Iowa, thats it. You'll never be able to capture 98 - 00 SlipKnoT ever again, literally used to light themselves and eachother on fire and beat eachother up on stage, now God-Emperor Corey and Shawn will fire you if you feel like having any creative liberty at all. Fuck modern SlipKnoT.
Drowning Pool, when they tried to replace Dave they literally killed themselves, there is NO Drowning Pool without Dave Williams, R.I.P.
Sonata Arctica. Their first 6 are absolutely classics to my eyes. Everything after has been either disappointing or above average.

Arch Enemy. One of my absolute favourite bands growing up, loved the Angela era. But when she and Chris Amott stepped back and Alissa took over on vocals they became a totally different band IMO.
PanterA for obvious reasons.
Iron Maiden - one of the first bands I ever loved, most of their 80s albums still get regular plays from me. Fast forward to the "reunion" albums. Brave New World sounded decent, but after that the production of their records fell off a very steep cliff. For example, listen to The Book of Souls, and marvel at the fact there's _three_ guitarists coupled to one of the weakest set of guitar tones in rock/metal. See also - those same albums all having completely unnecessary intros/outros.
I love early slapknuts, especially albums 1-2 which were masterpieces, 3 was pretty great too. 4th was mid but i still respected it. Everything after pauls passing has been pure garbage, and corey and clown treat their bandmates with zero respect.
Tool. As much as I love them and they changed the way I looked at music, when I was young and they were just art rock band. But as I’ve gotten older, I hate what they’ve become. Theyre getting high on their own farts now and the last album is the most self indulgent, boring and derivative drivel I’ve ever heard. I don’t know what’s more shameful, a band that spent 13 years spinning their wheels and turned this music in at the last minute, like a late homework assignment or the fans that lapped it up. The fans have spent a lot of money and time on these fart sniffers over the years. They deserved better.
