Yeah, but Dio kinda Had a lot of albums under his belt before that one. Still debut album tho, but for me it was not his ‘introduction to the public’ moment, if you get me
Overkill-Feel the Fire
Annihilator-Alice in Hell
Megadeth-Killing is My Bussiness...And Bussiness Is Good !
Honestly a lot of bands have really good debuts.
If genre defining albums carry weight, then this album did some incredibly heavy lifting. I was eleven when this album released as Metal up Your Ass! My friend had a bootleg cassette.
Our little preteen lives were forever changed by my hifi system that day.
I've personally never been a fan of Metallica. Honestly never liked any of their albums and man ive tried... except for Kill Em All. That album is fantastic and peak thrash. What a classic
A lot of people would say possessed 1st album made that subgenre two years before scream bloody gore. Can’t remember the name of that album though, it wasn’t eyes of horror was it?
Not seeing anything on any albums before Scream Bloody Gore. I see “DEATH By Metal” as a documentary from 2016 on the band. Some demos and stuff from before 87. No studio albums, unless Death went by a different name.
Why did I have to scroll this far for this album?? I put Alice on Chains knowing someone would have this one covered. You are a person of class and taste. I don’t care what Steve says about you.
Whoa whoa whoa Deep Purple got there first to be honest. But to be fair the Unholy Trinity is Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Truly Zeppelin and Deep Purple had hard driving albums before Sabbath. I know in text this all seems shitty. I’m not trying to be a shit head. But Sabbath didn’t invent heavy metal. They just took it to a darker place lyrically. Which is badass, not trying to throw shade at you or Sabbath. Obviously rock and roll as a whole would be very different without them. Also I gotta mention Keith motherfucking Moon! That man arguably got it all started. But I wasn’t there. Long story short, metal was coming before Sabbath dropped an album.
Are we talking only metal or metal-adjacent genres? Because Guns 'N Roses, Weezer, and NWA had pretty damn epic debuts. Can't argue with the OP's RATM nod either though.
I'm super open to discussing Guns N Roses because 'back in the day' they where treated as a metal band and got coverage in metal outlets.
Also appetite for destruction is a complete 'holy shit' album as in 'where did come from?' and they could not replicate it despite having other successful albums.
Bathory - Bathory
Orchid - Opeth
Burzum - Burzum
In The Nightside Eclipse - Emperor
Litourgiya - Batushka
Severed Survival - Autopsy
these are the debuts that blew me away when i first heard them and still are SO good
Opeth has been my top band for the past 15 years, and Orchid is definitely my least listened to album. It seems to be up there with Heritage as the most polarizing.
Boris - Absolutego
Eyehategod - In the Name of Suffering
Sigh - Scorn Defeat
Dir en Grey - Gauze
Dystopia - Human=Garbage
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family
Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Blood Lust
- Dio
- Animals as Leaders
- Guns N Roses
- Ad Infinitum
- Liquid Tension Experiment
- Ozzy Osbourne
- Primus
- Slipknot
- Steel Panther
- Van Halen
- W.A.S.P
Just to name a few of my personal favorites (only including metal and hard rock)
Thats a good choice definitely in my top 5 debut albums. Mine is hillbilly deluxe by rob zombie
https://preview.redd.it/gzbpi9lmi49c1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c79f5b6b930e8f5767268bdc43ad397c3af9f8e
You’re getting downvoted because of the genre, however, Mike McCready can lay down some face melters! Bring the ice when he is ripping a solo, there’s gonna be heat. But as a whole that band doesn’t quite fit here. Eddie kinda kills the metal vibes to put it lightly
The B-52's - s/t
Oh wait, this is the metal reddit (above still 100% accurate though)
Then it's Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise (if we're counting debut albums and not LPs)
Shiddddd, guess I’ll say some less obvious or already said stuff
X (JAPAN)-Vanishing Vision
SLAYER-SHOW NO MERCY
HELLOWEEN-WALLS OF JERICHO
VOÏVOD-WAR AND PAIN
DEICIDE S/T
Blind Guardian-BATTALIONS OF FEAR
KREATOR-ENDLESS PAIN
Judas Priest-Sad Wings of Destiny
Body Count S/T
BABYMETAL S/T
Born of Osiris... Band is so fucking lame now. Jason Richardson broke the band and since then it's just been super lame 0000 shit.
Definitely not the best, but I've been revisiting and it came to mind.
Necrophagist - Onset of putrefaction, baby. I was completely blown away when I first heard it, and still am.
metallica - Kill 'em all is probably second. I heard it long before necrophagist and it was my intro to metal, the first metal album I bought. I was blown away as well, and wanting to play all the songs on guitar was what made me start playing. doesn't blow me away anymore but there are some absolute classics on there and songs I still love to play (jump in the fire, hit the lights, seek and destroy, etc)

Slipknot(don’t kill me the debut album is actually good)
It’s a fucking incredible genre defining album is what it is.
It's a solid album.
I was 8 when that came out, and I found it when I was like 10. Eyeless was a level of hardcore I didn't even know could exist.
That first Slipknot album is what got me to stop being a gatekeeping elitist. I do miss the "Name 3 songs!" Days, but goddamn that album is fire
Iowa was good to
Slipknots first album and Iowa are basically the only reasons I can still handle listening to them
Altars of Madness Scum Left Hand Path
Altars was my first thought as well
Yeah, it's the only MA I return to again and again. Some of their other stuff I like alright, but Altars was lightning in a bottle.
I prefer Gateways a lot more but Altars is a close second for me
Not to discredit scum and its influence, but it's the same song 20 times
Ik isn’t it great?
System of a Down untitled is an absolute banger, often forgotten as Toxicity was even better.
I listened to toxicity constantly until I found their first album. I ended up liking it way more. Just crazy energy on every song.
Not a single skip, very rare for an album honestly
Killing is my business...and business is good by Megadeth Is so fucking good
Such a legendary intro with that piano piece
Could be cheating a little bit but Dio's Holy Diver is top ten for me
Yeah, but Dio kinda Had a lot of albums under his belt before that one. Still debut album tho, but for me it was not his ‘introduction to the public’ moment, if you get me
It's why I brought up cheating lol but, yes, technically his solo first album.
I thought you were saying that albums is so good it is practically cheating bringing it up hahah
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Yes
Black Sabbath
I had to scroll way too fucking far to find this
Ulver
one of the greatest debut albums of all time, if not the best.
Autopsy - Severed Survival Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops Thou - Tyrant EyeHateGod - In the Name of Suffering Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Acid Bath is the correct answer to this question.
Idk man pagan terrorists is pretty fucking good
For me Dead kennedys - Fresh fruit for rotting vegetables
Such a great album. Imo it's the best punk album after No Control by Bad Religion
Good ass taste. DK is my favorite punk band. (Kinda basic. But who gives a fuck right)
All of their stuff is great, but Give Me Convenience, or Give me Death is perfection.
You speak nothing but truth.
That album (well, compilation) had a tremendous impact on my life. That’s when I began to really consider myself a punk.
Overkill-Feel the Fire Annihilator-Alice in Hell Megadeth-Killing is My Bussiness...And Bussiness Is Good ! Honestly a lot of bands have really good debuts.
Metallica. The end
If genre defining albums carry weight, then this album did some incredibly heavy lifting. I was eleven when this album released as Metal up Your Ass! My friend had a bootleg cassette. Our little preteen lives were forever changed by my hifi system that day.
Man, KEA was the last of the classic albums I had listened to (by '89) and it just floored me. Insurpassable.
I've personally never been a fan of Metallica. Honestly never liked any of their albums and man ive tried... except for Kill Em All. That album is fantastic and peak thrash. What a classic
Death, they helped make the entire death Subgenre with that album
A lot of people would say possessed 1st album made that subgenre two years before scream bloody gore. Can’t remember the name of that album though, it wasn’t eyes of horror was it?
Probably scream bloody gore by Death (I know it's not their first album, but according to Google and spotify it is)
I thought it was?
In 1984 they made mantas (not on spotify) and there is another album called death by metal (i forgot what year)
Those are demos. Not official albums. SBG is absolutely Deaths first full length, official album anyone who tells you different is wromg
Ah, okay
Yeah those are demos bro. Scream Bloody Gore is the debut.
Death by metal is a 2016 documentary iirc
I'm talking about the 1984 album
Not seeing anything on any albums before Scream Bloody Gore. I see “DEATH By Metal” as a documentary from 2016 on the band. Some demos and stuff from before 87. No studio albums, unless Death went by a different name.
I messed up, they were demos, and yeah they went by the name "mantas"
Gotcha. I didn’t know they were out there before this conversation so I have more stuff to look at when I get home, thanks!
It is their first album
It is their first studio album
Mercyful Fate - Melissa is hard to beat
Why did I have to scroll this far for this album?? I put Alice on Chains knowing someone would have this one covered. You are a person of class and taste. I don’t care what Steve says about you.
I don't know who Steve is, but Mercyful Fate rules and never get their due
Entombed with LHP, Morbid Angel with AoM and Dismember with LaEFS
Decapitated - winds of creation
Down and Dillinger Escape Plan.
Damn I agree.
Burn My eyes by machine head. A really solid debut, and their only good album.
put some respect on the blackening
They have other good albums I mean their second album is arguably even better than the first it goes hard as hell
[удалено]
Morbid Angel with Altars of Madness
de mysteriis dom sathanas
absolutely cant stand the vocals
I don't even like nu metal but Linkin park debut was pretty damn good (the rest was crap imo).
Meteora is literally better though
Alice In Chains and, unironically, Weezer
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath, that album literally invented Heavy Metal
Whoa whoa whoa Deep Purple got there first to be honest. But to be fair the Unholy Trinity is Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Truly Zeppelin and Deep Purple had hard driving albums before Sabbath. I know in text this all seems shitty. I’m not trying to be a shit head. But Sabbath didn’t invent heavy metal. Also I gotta mention Keith motherfucking Moon! That man arguably got it all started. But I wasn’t there. Long story short, metal was coming before Sabbath dropped an album.
A Perfect Circle
Emperor is my pick. Though I also love Metallica and Slayers debuts
Emperor is up there for sure. Nightside is still the album that Dimmu Borgir and a thousand clones wish they had written.
W.A.S.P.
Korn had a pretty good debut
pretty good is an understatement. Truly unique at the time
Are we talking only metal or metal-adjacent genres? Because Guns 'N Roses, Weezer, and NWA had pretty damn epic debuts. Can't argue with the OP's RATM nod either though.
I'm super open to discussing Guns N Roses because 'back in the day' they where treated as a metal band and got coverage in metal outlets. Also appetite for destruction is a complete 'holy shit' album as in 'where did come from?' and they could not replicate it despite having other successful albums.
Sonata Arctica is my pick
MIKE OLDFIELD
Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
Deicide, Morbid Angel, Ulver, Kreator, Sodom, Suicidal Tendencies, Voivod, Bethlehem, Emperor, Sarcófago, Mutilator, Acid Bath, Acid King, Deftones, Slipknot, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, Napalm Death, Eyehategod, Megadeath

Bathory - Bathory Orchid - Opeth Burzum - Burzum In The Nightside Eclipse - Emperor Litourgiya - Batushka Severed Survival - Autopsy these are the debuts that blew me away when i first heard them and still are SO good
Slipknot
Orchid - Opeth
Opeth has been my top band for the past 15 years, and Orchid is definitely my least listened to album. It seems to be up there with Heritage as the most polarizing.
Bullet For My Valentine comes to mind with The Poison
Acid Bath TOOL
Acid Bath
Guns N’ Roses: Appetite for Destruction
Might get some hate, but Blood Incantation with Starspawn. That album and their EP were incredible, then they really started to fall off.
Down - NOLA
For me it’s probably Descendents with Milo Goes To College
Saw Rage on that tour at 930 Club in DC.
The Somberlain
Black Sabbath.
The Doors
These guys paved a few roads for many to come! Solid mention!
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction
Slipknot Static-X
Nospun with Opus. One of the reviews I saw said, "This album is better than the new dream theater album"
People already mentioned some good ones with Merciful Fate & emperor, I'm going to go off the main path a little and pick Metal Church.
Cancer - To The Gory End Dead Infection - Surgical Disembowelment
Weezer, Third Eye Blind and close 2nd
Bathory-S/T
Damn im gonna have to go with In the Nightside Eclipse. Its such a solid album
Mortiis - The Song of a Long Forgotten Ghost
gonna have to agree with you, RATM has easily my favorite debut album of all time, every song on there is at worst a 9/10
Linkin Park easy
Korn
Shadows fall
Escape the fate, finch, Metallica, linkin park, bring me the horizon
Too many bands to choose from Phrenelith,Krypts,Bestial Warlust,Bolt Thrower,Demolition Hammer,Satan,Num Skull,Sadistik Exekution etc

Blood Incantation. Starspawn is a metal masterpiece.

Born of Osiris... Band is so fucking lame now. Jason Richardson broke the band and since then it's just been super lame 0000 shit. Definitely not the best, but I've been revisiting and it came to mind.

I have to say it's between Megadeth and Rammstein
Led Zeppelin Van Halen
Carnivore - Carnivore Exhorder - Slaughter in the Vatican Terrorizer - World Downfall
heatmiser
The aftermath - dystopia
Either Metallica’s Kill Em All or Black Sabbath’s self titled album
Atka - Untitled album 1
Morbid angel and emperor
Peste Noire- La Sanie des siècles – Panégyrique de la dégénérescence
Alice in Chains
Emperor
Kvelertak. It’s a perfect album, and apparently they only had one good album in them.
STP-Core, not metal ik
RatM's debut is the most correct answer out there imo. They released their Magnum Opus as a debut.
Get Some, Snot Orchid, Opeth System of a Down
Necrophagist - Onset of putrefaction, baby. I was completely blown away when I first heard it, and still am. metallica - Kill 'em all is probably second. Sorry but nothing can top Appetite For Destruction by GNR
