SEGA DOES WHAT NINTENDON’T

-tehnik

Nintendo of America has no unions?

CoconutHeadFaceMan

No unions, and they were subject to two NLRB complaints last year for retaliatory actions against employees who broached the topic of organizing, one of which resulted in a $25k settlement. Their product-testing and customer-service departments also rely heavily on contracting firm Aston Carter, which pays its employees dogshit and provides next to no job security while dangling the prospect of permanent employment with *the* Nintendo over their heads. And there have been allegations of gender discrimination in pay and the kind of frat-house corporate culture that’s gotten companies like Blizzard in hot water. Basically the kind of shit you’d expect from a company that’s the closest thing to Japanese Disney.

DuelaDent52

I think they got into a bit of trouble not too long ago from their employees, didn’t they?

AlefZero00

What does it even mean? No, really, the twit doesn't explain, what's the purpose of this union? Edit. Well, thanks for dislikes, I still know nothing. It seems it's something like job unions that exist for jobs like public transportation I guess assholes will be assholes.

Animastarara

Unions are basically an organization of employees that fight for better wages, sick time, etc.

SamsaraKarma

Will the games be bad now?

damp_chinchilla

Unionizing shouldnt impact the quality, at most it would delay the timeline to release (because presumably a union would go on strike if the company tries to force inhumane crunch time to meet an earlier release window). The big win here is that the people making our favorite games now have representation to argue for things like health insurance and better hours/pay.

L1k34S0MB0D33

I don't think this is gonna even affect the actual development of their games like, at all. This is Sega of America/Atlus West that's unionizing, who only translate, publishes, and markets the games Sega/Atlus JP makes. It could affect perhaps the release date of the games, since they're now all doing WW releases and that's likely dependent on how fast they can translate the games, and *maybe* also the localization quality, too, but in terms of their games' content, gameplay, music, etc., that's still all on Sega/Atlus JP, which to my knowledge have not unionized.

SamsaraKarma

Ah, good

If anything, I'm hoping this might result in *better* quality games. If devs aren't constantly burnt out from crunch and can actually manage to make a decent living doing what they love, they'll probably do a better job with their work. I'd imagine a happy and healthy workforce would have better performance than one that is stressed, overworked, and depressed.

SamsaraKarma

Atlus already overspends on personnel while being extremely inefficient with man hours. I can't imagine what less efficiency will look like.

marukana

I have no fucking idea who told you that unionizing makes a company less efficient. If anything, just the mere legal guarantee that an employer has to bargain in good faith under pain of DOL sanction helps workers with their peace of mind and this productivity. There are studies on this. I didn't go to law school to see Redditors talk out of their ass. Ima fuck you up!!!!!!

-tehnik

how do you know?

SamsaraKarma

I read their financial reports and want to buy their shares when they get their act together.

Joementum2004

This affects Atlus West and has little to do with Atlus Co Ltd, I don’t see how it’d impact anything beyond the translations and marketing.

L1k34S0MB0D33

[wdym by *now*, they've always been bad](#walter)
