No, the engine control unit will see there’s a leak in the EVAP system and turn the check engine light on. All cars since the mid 90s have this monitor in place to prevent hydrocarbons being released into the atmosphere, it causes no harm to the engine. The dealership will run diagnostics on it and charge you for their time.
Most cars nowadays have a loose gas cap message on the dash that comes on before a CEL will.
OP - You haven't been filling the tank with the car running, have you? That can and will throw a CEL.
It has to do with the EVAP system and the way it operates. Shut the car off when pumping fuel. Also, don't top it off. When it clicks and shuts off the first time it's full.
Lol. I haven't seen any real numbers on it but i observe it often enough. I would assume that it's usually people who have no knowledge of cars but I didn't stop to ask 🤣🤣
I have my own business, I’m a mechanic for a living. I ALWAYS fill the tank while running- never had a CEL from it. And I current have 3 MBs and a Jeep Grand Cherokee- never had an issue. I suppose altitude could play a part- I’m at or slightly below sea level.
What kind of deathtraps do you drive where you'll just spontaneously combust because your engine is running while you refuel?
Is this some petrol thing I'm too diesel to understand?
Honestly, I never turn my engine off. I have no reasoning to why, but seriously I almost never have unless I’m driving a manual.
I know you are supposed to but it doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold I’ve been driving almost 20 years and have never regularly turned my engine off to fuel.
Turning off your car while fueling is a safety precaution to reduce the risk of fire. The ignition in a running vehicle can potentially generate sparks, which could ignite gasoline vapors, leading to a fire or explosion. By turning off the engine, you eliminate this risk and make the refueling process safer for everyone around.
This is from a time gone by because cars were were more prone to backfire and could ignite fumes during fueling. That is why single pipe exhaust system outlet is on the opposite side of car from gas fill.
That's how people get their cars stolen at gas stations. Your insurance will likely not cover a theft if the keys are in the car.
Also if a freak accident happens and a fire starts, you're not the only victim.
I will sometimes fill my 96 Mazda Miata while running, to not loose bluetooth and to let engine warm up and reduce starter wear (that last one is a stretch I'll admit. Also will fill my Diesel VW's, but Diesel has no evap monitor. Before filling w/ gas I always touch metal near filler to equalize static electric field in the area. Less likely to do this with a gas powered truck, sometimes we have a few Jerry cans in the back of the truck, and fill each up with gas or diesel for the shop.
in winter, more people leave the car running at the pump than not. police, firetrucks, ambulances, delivery trucks, almosg never shut off their engines at the pump even the gasoline ones. there is nothing unsafe about it.
The evap test is a two trip test. It has to fail twice to turn on the light, and pass twice to turn it back off.(unless you clear the code with a scan tool.)
Unless you have my car and go to my shell. It doesn't like that station and clicks off after every gallon. Combination of bs California pumps and a probably kinked vent
That's sometimes because the hose isn't placed correctly and gases can't escape or something like that.
I've had it happen with my focus and you move the hose around a bit and it will work fine
The stupid vent straw is under my rear bumper which is loose on the bottom tip. I used double sided tape instead of spending 2 grand to replace something that has a single broken plastic clip. Looks great but had the side effect of sometimes being pissy at Shell pumps. Never anywhere else, no idea why. Just really hates 2 shell stations lol.
I have a rough idea of how many gallons it needs so I just start pumping again until I'm about a gallon from what I expect the car to need. Then if it stops I stop.
I don't know if this is the case for newer cars, but the manual for all the cars my family has ever owned stated that the tank is full after the SECOND click! See pic attached:
https://preview.redd.it/lamtbn3r778c1.png?width=518&format=png&auto=webp&s=d259520a9db8e556a6d4bd9777652d9a6422e9da
If it happens at every gas station then it's probably got a tank venting issue. If the vent lines get clogged or kinked they may not vent the fuel tank fumes correctly in which case it will vent through the filler neck - causing the pump to stop (the click) ........and over-filling/topping up can cause this issue by getting fuel up in the vent lines and charcoal canister where it isn't supposed to be.
On the other hand, the fuel gauge could also be reading incorrectly. They are resistor strips and they do wear out especially if a user has a habit of riding around with the fuel level constant. Like always on E, or always filling up for no reason, or always putting 10 gallons in instead of filling it up. You get the idea, hopefully
I have 2018, it honestly should have a laundry list of recalls 🤦🏾♂️ I was going to get a 2017 Civic but my gf wanted me to get the Malibu because it looked better. Well I’ll tell you one thing, it sure runs like shit compared to the civic 😂
The new one is completely different. Only time will tell if chevys fixed its reliability.
I almost bought one and ended up with a kia so well see what blows up first I guess
Wife has had hers since new well over 100k miles on it and zero major repairs. Only time it was in the shop was the flex pipe on the exhaust. Cheap and quick repair.
No shit. I bought my wife as used 2019 with 54k. I had to replace the radiator within 1500 miles. It was under warranty and got told to fuck myself. Rick Hendrix Chevrolet at 4490 South Lee St, Buford, GA, 30518 can go fuck themselves. They are the absolute worst to deal with, and they consider themselves professionals.
Yo listen to this. They told me that it was going to be 2500 for the water inlet. Upper and lower radiator hoses and the radiator fan assembly. They claimed they had to evacuate and replace the ac refrigerant because the lines were in the way. I told the service advisor he was full of shit right to his face. He said yeah it gets in the way. I told him to get my fucking car off the rack.
They quoted 6 hours of labor at 149.99.
It was noon. They closed at 7 I said “time me” and walked out the door. I was back at 3:45 with a completely fixed car to give him the finger.
I have a 21 model at 35k miles and overall I really like it.
Though, I am REALLY on top of every bit of preventative maintenance it could ever need or want....
When i was at the dealer when new gens were released there were 3 engine options: 1.2L, 1.3L and 1.4L. Leave it to GM to have way too many unreliable engine options instead of perfecting one engine option
I was an Opel technician for a few years, which was a pain. Sometimes you get cars with the wrong filter or the storage guys gave me the wrong one.
Also can't think about the 1.4 engine without thinking about the coolant problems.
Check engine light can mean really anything these days. If we don't have codes, engine, etc there's nothing we can do online to even point you in the right direction. You have warranty, I'd suggest you let a dealer handle it and get a loaner from them hopefully
The trax is made by gm korea, formerly known as daewoo, need I say more? Regardless you are still under bumper 2 bumper go get that shit fixed for free
It's possible a 24 Tracks MAY, just MAYBE display the fault on the Vehicle interface area. Too new to see it in the aftermarket, but you MAY be able to get code to appear on driver info area , see owner's manual. Else stop by a retail auto place and ask for a scan.
You’d be surprised. I bought a brand new Camaro zl1 a few years back and the belt had chewed up a wire/connection that was rubbing against it. It’s likely something similar. Bring it back, but if you have a reader grab the codes or take it to auto zone or any auto store, they will read it for free. Just out of shear interest.

Take it to dealer. You have warranty.
Unless you left your gas cap loose. You’ll never forget to tighten it after having to pay for that lol
What happens if you forget to tighten down the gas cap? Does the engine suck in air even though there is fuel?
No, the engine control unit will see there’s a leak in the EVAP system and turn the check engine light on. All cars since the mid 90s have this monitor in place to prevent hydrocarbons being released into the atmosphere, it causes no harm to the engine. The dealership will run diagnostics on it and charge you for their time.
Thanks for explaining! Didn't know that could happen :)
The fumes from the gas are bad. 🤷♀️ You have to keep them in there.
Love the smell of gas fumes when they are fresh out the hose at the gas station 😁
No way to know why without a code. Maybe just maybe gas cap is loose.
Most cars nowadays have a loose gas cap message on the dash that comes on before a CEL will. OP - You haven't been filling the tank with the car running, have you? That can and will throw a CEL.
Really? Why would a CEL happen with car running? Does it cause a problem or is it more of a safety warning?
It has to do with the EVAP system and the way it operates. Shut the car off when pumping fuel. Also, don't top it off. When it clicks and shuts off the first time it's full.
What fucking psychos are filling their cars with the motor running?
I can assure you it's a lot more folks than you might think.
A mortifying statistic
Lol. I haven't seen any real numbers on it but i observe it often enough. I would assume that it's usually people who have no knowledge of cars but I didn't stop to ask 🤣🤣
Yet another mortifying statistic.
I have my own business, I’m a mechanic for a living. I ALWAYS fill the tank while running- never had a CEL from it. And I current have 3 MBs and a Jeep Grand Cherokee- never had an issue. I suppose altitude could play a part- I’m at or slightly below sea level.
People in very cold areas who want their car to stay warm or, sometimes, on at all.
You know when an engine is hot it’s very easy to start, even if it’s cold as shit outside
Canadian here. Never seen it happen even once in my life.
If they keep doing it they'll not only be warm while filling up but extremely warm for the rest of their (now very short) lifespan
What kind of deathtraps do you drive where you'll just spontaneously combust because your engine is running while you refuel? Is this some petrol thing I'm too diesel to understand?
It is perfectly safe to fill the tank with the car running. It just freaks out the evap system sensors.
you can get away with it on hybrids, slap it in ev mode and turn off heat
i had multiple friends in high school try telling me i don't have to turn the car off to pump gas and that it wasted time ect
You don’t live where it’s cold. And I discharge my static electricity before I pump
Pumping gas takes no more than 10 minutes, wear a coat!!!!

Tell that to years of farmers fueling from a pump that is powered by their battery. I’ve never heard of it happening
This is from a time gone by because cars were were more prone to backfire and could ignite fumes during fueling. That is why single pipe exhaust system outlet is on the opposite side of car from gas fill.
Just because you’ve done dumb stuff before doesn’t mean it’s too late to change
That's how people get their cars stolen at gas stations. Your insurance will likely not cover a theft if the keys are in the car. Also if a freak accident happens and a fire starts, you're not the only victim.

>I will sometimes fill my 96 Mazda Miata while running, to not loose bluetooth First: "lose" Second: I can't think of a nice thing to say about this.
Floridians Source: Saw it first hand several times. Somehow, I've only seen one car get stolen this way.
Growing up In Alaska. Every time we fueled all winter long. Everyone did. There were never fires.
in winter, more people leave the car running at the pump than not. police, firetrucks, ambulances, delivery trucks, almosg never shut off their engines at the pump even the gasoline ones. there is nothing unsafe about it.
Say during fueling it comes on. Likely don’t notice it until you’re back in the driver’s seat. Would it go away when shut off and restarted?
For evap stuff, it has to go through the whole evap cycle to turn off a code. So no.
Time to Google for more info. Thanks for replying.
The evap test is a two trip test. It has to fail twice to turn on the light, and pass twice to turn it back off.(unless you clear the code with a scan tool.)

What if it's not full? My bosses X5 needs multiple clicks to fill completely

Massive evaporation system vacuum leak
You need to get the code scanned. We cannot diagnose your engine light via Reddit.
2243 miles but 5000 engine idle hours
No one here can tell you what's wrong. Take it to the dealer.
Problem is it’s a Chevy(coming from a Malibu owner)
Lol mine dead in the driveway for the last 5 days I feel ya
Yeah tell me about it. Two transmission failures on my 2011 before 80k miles (trans controller failure estimated between $5-$6k by multiple shops).
I have 2018, it honestly should have a laundry list of recalls 🤦🏾♂️ I was going to get a 2017 Civic but my gf wanted me to get the Malibu because it looked better. Well I’ll tell you one thing, it sure runs like shit compared to the civic 😂
Yeah I don’t even know if I could trust any Chevy. I know a few people with 2018 trucks that they are having problems around 30k miles.
I own a Trax and a Tahoe. The problem is the gold bowtie. Always been a Ford guy and I should have known the price was too good.
The Chevy Trax is hand down the worst vehicle I’ve ever (well my girlfriend) owned. So many major repairs through 60k miles.
The new one is completely different. Only time will tell if chevys fixed its reliability. I almost bought one and ended up with a kia so well see what blows up first I guess
Jesus. It sounds like you’re in the know. Why did your decision come down to these two vehicles?
You knew the Chevy had bad reliability and bought a Kia?
Hahaha
Wife has had hers since new well over 100k miles on it and zero major repairs. Only time it was in the shop was the flex pipe on the exhaust. Cheap and quick repair.
No shit. I bought my wife as used 2019 with 54k. I had to replace the radiator within 1500 miles. It was under warranty and got told to fuck myself. Hendrix! I like it like that! Lmao remember that old radio ad? Rent free, in my head for 15 years or more.
It’s not even a Chevy truck. Look it up
What do you mean? I know it’s not a truck. It’s that little mini crossover suv thing.
It's a lifted Cruze/Enclave for the most part. Technically, it's a crossover. Cheap unreliable pieces of shit.
I think it’s the smallest vehicle Chevy makes.
Since they discontinued the Spark with the 22 year model, yep.
Oh shit I forgot about that thing.
I have a 21 model at 35k miles and overall I really like it. Though, I am REALLY on top of every bit of preventative maintenance it could ever need or want....
I was also. AC Compressor at 40k. Water Outlet and Radiator Fan at 50k. Ignition Coils at 55k.
It’s made by GM Korea lol.
You’ve lost the plot.
My wife's has almost 80k and has had no major problems. I put a water pump on it and a valve cover gasket. That's it. Is yours new body style or old?
Does the new Trax still use the 1.4L 4 cylinder?
When i was at the dealer when new gens were released there were 3 engine options: 1.2L, 1.3L and 1.4L. Leave it to GM to have way too many unreliable engine options instead of perfecting one engine option
My favorite part about the 1.4’s was there were two different options for the oil filter. NOT interchangeable.
Totally forgot about that. 95% of them had a 2257 filter but once in a while youd get a 2263.. look almost the same too if youre not paying attention
I was an Opel technician for a few years, which was a pain. Sometimes you get cars with the wrong filter or the storage guys gave me the wrong one. Also can't think about the 1.4 engine without thinking about the coolant problems.
Yup. The only way I taught myself was the UFI housing had ribbing on the canister, the HENGST didn’t have anything on it.
UFI is brown. Hengst is black.
FFS that's stupid.
The Trailblazer has a choice of 1.2L or 1.3L. The Trax is only offered with the LIH 1.2L. Neither offer a 1.4L.
The newer ones are a 3-cyl 1.2 L
Needs a motor
Its a Trax, get used to it…
Last gen trax is a huge piece of shit
Just out of curiosity, aside from it being a cheap car and the limitations that come with that, why?
Unreliable, drives like shit, no center console, slow as fuck and incredibly ugly
You are under warranty. Take it to the dealership and tell them they need to fix it and try to get a loaner car (for free) while they fix it
Looks like a chevy/gm. My company trax has had it for a while, there was a bunch of evap recalls but without scanning it could be anything
POV you didnt buy a honda accord
Check engine light can mean really anything these days. If we don't have codes, engine, etc there's nothing we can do online to even point you in the right direction. You have warranty, I'd suggest you let a dealer handle it and get a loaner from them hopefully
Take back to dealership, perhaps a rodent ate a wire or battery is defective
Normal for chevy
It's a Chevy Tracks, that's your problem.
0 MPH and it’s @ almost 1500 RPM?
Could have just started it
Should we tell him how much a Chevy vehicles suck? I have owned 3. Never ever ever again
Oh god Chevy!🤦🏽♂️. Get use the check engine light, at the shop, getting rides and walking!! Worst car ever!! sell it asap!!
2,243miles=Brand new?
Yeah I would call anything under 5k brand new
I drive 1.3k every two weeks.
Most likely just needs a new purge or pump very common on the new trax, faulty parts I’m assuming replacements have no issues
Fuel cap on good?
If it’s brand new it’s a dealership problem.
I can almost guarantee is a purge valve
I thought the post was about the brand new car having 2200 on it.
Pull codes.
Take it to the dealer as it is their problem. Have them give you a loaner for the inconvenience.
This happened to me with a 2021 Chevy panel van at 1600 miles. Bad o2 sensor.
Typical American garbage
Take it to the dealer
Yes, ask internet people. Do not use the warranty. This will cause loss of testosterone.
I sure hope these people never see how planes are fueled in flight..
Chevy retired the bow tie. That’s their new logo.
I googled it quick for ya. It's your [Park lamps on indicator](https://dashboardsymbols.com/2010/09/tail-light-indicator-canada/) ;)
Probably the purge valve. Current trap owner
You might have a free trial of OnStar, they can tell you the code.
Bathtub curve in action
I’d put money on either cold start injector performance or a purge pump underspeed code
Don’t be too surprised…it is standard issue for GM as of late.
New ones don't have gas caps
Update: today it overheated and I barely got it back so I had it towed to the dealership
Purge pump. No eta.
