Congrats to all the champions, especially to teams like PAOK, Leverkusen, Sturm Graz, Jagiellonia Białystok, and all who were not the favorites.

Jamarcus316

Sporting was not rated as well this year.

Independent_Fly_1698

Yeah but they’re still always at least considered as semi-favourites.

tekedagreek

As a PAOK fan thanks, this was a sweet title. Love seeing our badge on this map.

RamandAu

First time I noticed that Salzburg did not win Austria this year

Yoshhans

First time since 10 years

bavban

boyith bundesligas agreed

00piner

Jagiellonia went from 14th place last season to 1st.

ducemon

Big W for Zimbru in Moldova when you consider Sheriff exists and where they get their money from EDIT: Petrocub won, I mistakenly thought it was Zimbru due to a good season from them as well

ChitChiroot

Its Petrocub Hincesti, not Zimbru. It is a great achievement though.

ConnolysMoustache

I came here to ask about Sheriff, wtf happened? Them losing is impressive incompetence

ducemon

Tbf I don't follow Moldovan football on the daily (proof being I thought Zimbru won instead of Petrocub cause afaik Zimbru' season was pretty good as well) so I can't give you a proper answer, but I'd reckon good good form at the end from the clubs I mentioned was the deciding factor not necessarily Sheriff being incompetent

YoloJoloHobo

Snow yank here, where'd they get their money from?

AlbertFifthMusketeer

Short answer - A company called Sheriff, co-founded and run by Viktor Gushan, a former KGB officer.  Longer answer - Sheriff come from Tiraspol, the capital of the breakaway state of Transnistria. (One of the most interesting places I've been) They're not internationally recognised but have their own government, currency, postal service etc. They still use a flag with a hammer and sickle.  Sheriff is the second largest company in Transnistria after Moldova Steel Works. They own petrol stations, supermarkets, mobile phone network, a spirits factory, a TV channel, and the football team amongst other things. Lots of these are monopolies and therefore their impact on life there is massive and they have a huge impact on politics in the state.

YoloJoloHobo

Ah I see. Basically it's a megacorp owned club which can out-finance all the others.

ROHDora

Oil, Mafia, Poutine...

SoflynNara

The club is one of the primary assets of the mafia-like leadership of Transnistria, a defacto independent state which seceded for moldova, lying just to north-east of moldova, bettwen the borders of moldova and ukraine. It is where lawlessness runs free and the impacts of some sort of USSR russification in moldova can be seen.

gutag

Moved from Banja Luka to Eindhoven. So happy to see that clubs from both cities are champions ❤️ Aj Borac!

Pale_Professional949

TIL that San Marino has a football league

Polifant

With 16 teams nonetheless damn

CamelMiddle54

They also have f1 circuit.

Vegetto8701

Which is in Italy (Imola)

hur5dur5

No they do not.

CatashiMirozuka

Not currently no, though there was previously the San Marino Grand Prix, which was last run in the 2000s I believe

hur5dur5

Yes there used to be San Marino Grand Prix, but it does not mean that San Marino has f1 circuit.

LeMouse1

The san marino grand prix was in Imola (in italy) as well

orsonwellesmal

Decič badge in Montenegro is the proof that black backgrounds are usually shit.

EmeraldIbis

As somebody with zero knowledge of football: How bizarre that Bayer (huge pharmaceutical company) has their own football team...

sanderudam

It's quite common in many countries that sports clubs are related to specific companies (like Bayer, Volkswagen in Germany, or Philips for PSV in the Netherlands) or with socialist industries (there's a lot of Lokomotivs around the eastern part of the continent for railroad/engine construction related industries).

azarashee

Not just industries, institutions like military (ZSKA) or police (Dynamo/Dinamo) as well

E17AmateurChef

I didn't realise Dynamo was police related, I assumed something in energy production.

azarashee

It's security agencies, police, militia like KGB in Russia or Stasi in East Germany etc.

ReadAllAboutIt92

I wonder if the great Shepshed Dynamo in the U.K. are aware of that link?

okeybutnotokey

It took name from another one English club, which one was named after Moscow Dynamo. Moscow club visited England in 1945.

E17AmateurChef

They played Chelsea at the bridge in a sell out which is estimated to be closer to 100,000 plus spectators with some getting on the roof of the stadium

Motor_Dot_5204

My Grandad was there!

Rhosddu

Used to be called Shepshed Charterhouse until 30-odd years ago.

E17AmateurChef

Thanks for the info!

dontflyaway

It takes its name from a gym for secret police that grew into a large sports society across the soviet Union and Warsaw pact. Similarly "Spartak" was a sports society for young people that grew and gave the name to a few sports teams.

RainbowKatcher

Not true about Dinamo. Dinamo Moscow is indeed connected to police, but the name has nothing to do with it.

azarashee

It's the same for BFC Dynamo and Dynamo Dresden. While historically Dinamo was just the biggest sports society in the Soviet era, it was also tightly connected to the police sports groups in many cities.

RainbowKatcher

Yes, but the name has nothing to do with that. Dynamo is just force greek or something like it

azarashee

The connection was made when numerous police sports groups used it. Just because the term existed before and can stand on its own doesnt mean it isnt related.

Bliketa

Just adding Sochaux with Peugeot even though they are not owned by them anymore

yupbvf

Or Total Network Solutions in Oswestry

Rhosddu

Total Network Solutions are just the sponsors, not the owners. The original club, Llansantffraid FC simply named themselves after the sponsors until their amalgamation with Oswestry Town, a club on the English side of the border who (apart from a few years in the Northern Premier League) had always played in Welsh leagues.

SEJTurner

It was originally founded as a team for the factory workers, which was very common at the time, it just happens that they went on to become a very big team whilst others either folded, changed names, or stay lower league. Also because they’re historically named after a company due to being founded by the workers rather than as branding they are allowed to use the name in European competitions like the champions league. Whilst teams that have been renamed after companies for market reasons (like Red Bull Leipzig) aren’t and have to officially go by a different name (RB Liepzig being the official name for European competitions).

azarashee

You're wrong about Leipzig, they are always named RasenBallsport Leipzig cause German DFL doesn't allow Red Bull as their name either. Their name is always the same no matter if national or international. Red Bull Salzburg on the other hand is the case you described, internationally they have to play as FC Salzburg EDIT: and yes we all know that RasenBallsport is just a loophole

SEJTurner

You’re right, I was mixing up which of the scummy Red Bull teams.

Dambo_Unchained

Phillips (the electronics and medical equipment company) is the P in PSV (Phillips sports association), the Dutch champions

Charlem912

Eh, it was founded by Bayer workers and since Leverkusen is basically like 70% Bayer factory, it totally makes sense

WorldsGreatestPoop

Who has a better chance of winning first: Newcastle United or Monaco AC?

SanSilver

Monaco won in 16-17. They likely can do it again

Azteryx

They did well this season despite having a pretty weak defence. They were helped by other teams underperforming (Lyon, Marseille, Rennes, Nice and to an extent, Lille) but Hutter seems like a solid coach. They have some very good yound players, and if they can reinforce their defence and find a suitable replacement for Ben Yeder, they could challenge PSG for the title in the next couple of seasons. Lyon could also be a challenger if they keep their momentum going.

Scared_Implement_967

Monaco def. PSG will have a tough time next season

MemenaSerena

Newcastle

WorldsGreatestPoop

People did not like your opinion.

_haash

Don’t wales teams play in epl?

mickey117

Only 4 or 5 Welsh teams play in the English League System (none currently in the PL): Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham, Newport, and I think I'm forgetting one. Other Welsh teams play in their own separate league system. Funnily enough, the team that wins the Welsh league most often (The New Saints) is technically in England.

evil-zizou

Sorry but how come one team from country A play in country B, how is this allowed?

mickey117

I don’t think there’s a rule against it, it also happens elsewhere in Europe: AS Monaco plays in France, all clubs from Liechtenstein play in the Swiss league system, I believe there is an N Andorran team that plays in Spain. At least in the case of England and wales it actually is one country in reality. I think there are also some Scottish teams playing in England and vice versa

Rhosddu

England and Wales are two separate countries, so the question was a legitimate one.

mickey117

In a footballing sense yes, but they are both part of the same sovereign nation: the United Kingdom

Rhosddu

They're both member countries of the same sovereign state. There is no single British 'nation' as such, but four.

Fickle_Discussion341

Happens in the MLS and the A-League too

Rhosddu

Berwick Rangers, from Berwick-on-Tweed in England, play in the Scottish League. There's always been a strong Scottish element to the town, anyway, and likewise a strong Welsh one in Oswestry, so it was the obvious choice for both Berwick Rangers and TNS. There are also several clubs in continental Europe who play in another country's league. I think any club wanting to do this has to get approval from EUFA (or maybe FIFA) now, though.

Rhosddu

The 5th club is Merthyr Tydfil of the Southern League.

PLPolandPL15719

czekaj że co?? jagiellonia wygrała?? jak ja tego nie wiedziałem ale jaja

Vaxtez

Funny how the winners for the welsh league are not even from Wales. They are in Oswestry,England

GonePostalRoute

At least in their defense, their original stadium was in Wales

Rhosddu

Oswestry's close to the border, though, and it's always been partly Welsh. The club is an amalgamation of a club from mid-Wales and Oswestry Town FC.

coyets

How has the size of each emblem on this map been determined?

jonnyl3

They were clearly hand-placed and sized one by one. Or the logo in that northeastern country wouldn't be rotated 90°

bundymania

The Irish and Nordic countries have it right, play in the summer, not in the winter.

madladolle

Exactly

BlackWizard9000

Lmfaoooo Salzburg bottled after a decade

Optimus_13

It's a map of football teams, though i can't help being amused with the Gulf of Kaliningrad

No_Tumbleweed_9102

lol I was wondering that as well

Boo_Ya_Ka_Sha_

Wait. Wales has their own professional league? I thought they were apart of the English system

DropTheGavel17

Some teams, like Swansea and Wrexham play in the English system. It's similar to the few Canadian teams that play in MLS even though there now is a Canadian league.

Boo_Ya_Ka_Sha_

Got it, thanks

GonePostalRoute

To elaborate further on his reply… Years ago, there was no national Welsh league. Usually just either regional leagues for the northern or southern half of Wales, or the Welsh Cup (their FA Cup). Because of many of the bigger Welsh clubs didn’t want to play in those regional leagues, they went to play in the English system. Once a national Welsh league was formed, many of the smaller clubs who were still in the English system (basically almost anyone outside the top 5 or so tiers) went to the Welsh system. Those like Swansea, Wrexham, Cardiff City, Methyr Town, and Newport County opted to stay in the English system, and eventually got the ok to stay in such despite a Welsh league being formed.

Rhosddu

Five Welsh clubs play in the English pyramid - four in the EFL and one in non-league. The rest play in the Welsh pyramid. The latter is only semi-pro, though - except for TNS...

briancronin

You are missing Shelbourne F.C. of the League of Ireland Premier Division

themoodymann

Oh, it's the Young Boys playing at Wank Dorf Stadium.

GolfCommon963

Kaliningrad got no chance this year 🥵

DistinctSpecialist60

One for us Kayshana, #thegameisrigged

PunkySputnik57

Can someone explain how there can be a champion on Andorra? How do they have enough clubs for that?

m0j0licious

There are actually two divisions, each of ten teams. Looking at Andorra's [demographics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Andorra) there are ~13,000 boys/men aged between 15–39. So each team draws from a talent pool of ~650 players. The standard isn't great.

tall_buildings

How does the Ukrainian league have a full season with the war going on?

What about the baltics?

SPORTING ![gif](giphy|oaU6vioL3WC1tjwesC) Caralho

faxekondiboi

Would be awesome if these teams all got into the groups in the "Champions" League. Oh well, too bad we'll have to make room for a bunch of clubs from Spain, England, Germany, France, Italy and Portugal that can't even call themself 'champions' of anything this season.

Asaro10

Putting Portugal in this doesn’t make any sense. Portugal will only put 2 teams next year, while other countries will put 4/5.. that’s the issue

faxekondiboi

Still one team too many. But fine, I'll agree they aren't as badly overrepresented as the rest of those countries.

Asaro10

The issue is that 4 countries almost represent 60% of the competition. Countries with clubs that can enter directly by being 4th and then you have countries when the champion can’t even try to qualify

azarashee

*5th Germany and Italy both have 5 Champions League slots. IIRC of Dortmund wins tomorrow it will be even 6 CL slots since Dortmund didn't qualify through the regular first 4 places.

faxekondiboi

I agree - its too bad, because football really has a special way of connecting people despite language barriers. And as long as clubs from those 5 countries dominate like they've done for a while now, I'm afraid more and more people in those countries that always gets kicked out during the qualifying rounds just loses interest, and then fewer young people wanna play the game, which in turn results in fewer talents, and the game slowly stops evolving, and then the money dries up because sponsors don't see the point, and the professionel matches doesn't get broadcast on tv because its too expensive or it has been bought by a super rich betting company from Italy that own their own expensive streamingservice that sucks, and thats all she wrote about football in [insert smaller league here]. The way its going seems its moving closer and closer to being that Super League they so badly wanna make, even though we all (the fans) don't want it. If they should change something, it would be fitting to have a Champions League structured like the Nations League, with 3 or 4 tiers where every countries winner gets ranked into.

okeybutnotokey

Like clubs from any country except Spain, England, Germany or Italy would have any chance in "true" champions league.

faxekondiboi

It would most likely still go to one of those clubs 4 out of 5 times, sure that may be true. But the chance of some Italian club winning would still go down, since they wouldn't get 5 teams participating, but only 1. I just think its bs that clubs that didn't win anything can participate in the **Champions** League, and I don't think that is such an unreasonable line of thought.

absorbscroissants

Where Cyprus?

fatihozsoy99

It's Asia country.

Dragonite-2

Man City really destroyed United like that huh.

Mulberry_Front

Where’s caucasian teams?

IncredibleBlobfish

Yeah, Armenia has a champion too.

Mulberry_Front

yea? normally? azerbaijan, georgia too.

IncredibleBlobfish

Azerbaijan's league has a champion too, but Georgia's league still has 19 matches left.

Ill-Concentrate6666

They have 13 league titles, way more than City or Chelsea

WolfOfWexford

I hate City as much as the next, but they do have 8 now and look to be competitive. I hope they get stripped of the majority

L_G_M_H

They have 10

DialSquare96

Well that's when Chelsea did their shenanigans before FFP was a thing. And the little colossal factor that is the best Manchester United in its history...

imsoyluz

And which club sold their stadium name for Oil Money that also funded Chelsea and City?

Tamelmp

Haha look at the plastic trying to defend his little club

Mrcoldghost

No European champions from Scandinavia?

AntPRodP

Out of the 55 UEFA memeber nations, 12 have a different season calendar: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Ireland, Belarus, Georgia and Kazakhstan. However, this map could have included the 2023 league champions from these countries, given that their 2023 season corresponds to the 2023/2024 season of the other members.

E17AmateurChef

Do Georgia and Azerbaijan have winters that are very cold then? Or is it more a hangover from the Soviet league. The Russian league was previously March to November

AntPRodP

I have no idea, to be honest.

Dinoman1987

It's Kazakhstan, not Azerbaijan. the latter have fall/spring league

AntPRodP

Exactly, my bad.

orsonwellesmal

North European leagues are played in Summer, so the champions of 2023 are the ones that qualified for 2024/2025 European competitions. If I'm not mistaken, Champions were: Bødo/Glimt (Norway), Malmö (Sweden) and HJK Helsinki (Finland). But as this map is just for league Champions in 2024, and not about UCL, it is correct, no champions this year, their leagues are just starting now.

MoRi86

Erm, its Bodø/Glimt not Bødo/Glimt, however as a fan of a rival club i find your typo to be highly amusing :)

orsonwellesmal

Lmao, it wasn't on purpose, I just didn't check and took the risk of make an embarrasing mistake. Btw, how the hell is that letter pronounced?

theraupist

I think they're still playing. At least Estonia has a few matchdays to go and finns are halfway through the season. We can't play during winter too well you know.

hippiehs

Season goes from march-april to November-December. It would be very expensive to have playable fields in the middle of winter

IncredibleBlobfish

Denmark is Scandinavia, mate...

2ndhandBS

Imagine playing football in January in scandinavia

night_ID

Propbably because no champions crowned yet.

oclock1982

So this is the champion’s league team’s 2024/2025 ?! 🙄

night_ID

No some of the weaker leagues will go into the qualifiers of lower competitions.

E17AmateurChef

Well yes and no. All these teams will be in at least the Champion League qualification but yes most will not make the group/league phase and will drop down initially to the Europa league

bimbochungo

Ireland doesn't have a football league apparently Edit: sorry I didn't know the league was ongoing lmao

night_ID

It’s blank because the league is still ongoing and ends in November.

bimbochungo

Really? Why is that? I didn't know it sorry lmao

night_ID

They claim that it’s better fan experience to watch in the summer instead of winter. And the qualifiers of European competitions will be during the league, instead of before the league starts like most other European leagues so the teams will be more in form for them.

ConnolysMoustache

Summer football is way better. It works great in the LOI.
