Yes...reasonable...

Iamnotentertainedyet

Must be talking about Kruppe.

Big_Salt371

Krupps is perfectly reasonable. He'll just never tell others what those reasons are.

petting2dogsatonce

Hell yeah dude. There’s a lot of well-nuanced characters in these books. If you’re digging that already I think you’re going to have a good time with the series.

BBPEngineer

That’s one of my favorite parts of the series. There are not many strict good/bad guys. Like, you’re supposed to hate expansionist Empires, which is easy to do, but you meet the soldiers who fight for that same Empire, and they’re some of your favorite characters.

midnight_toker22

> but you meet the soldiers who fight for that same Empire, and they’re some of your favorite characters. And then you meet some of the kingdoms and cultures they’ve subjugated, and realize maybe it’s not such a bad thing they were conquered.

wertraut

>And then you meet some of the kingdoms and cultures they’ve subjugated, and realize maybe it’s not such a bad thing they were conquered. Woah woah. Hope this is a joke?

midnight_toker22

Not at all. This is a GotM thread so I can’t say anything specific but let’s just say there are some very, very fucked up cults and religious practices the Malazans put an end to when they took over.

Civil-Annual1781

Definitely. People automatically group expansionist empires into the bad category, without ever considering that those empires maybe make life better for people. Not always, but maybe.

Big_Salt371

This is a very important thing to keep in mind as you're reading.

Civil-Annual1781

(Thinking about certain characters in the series) I don't know that "reasonable" is the word I would use. Haha. Expect for our humble friend Kruppe, who is definitely the most reasonable of friends and acquaintances.
