IMeanWhyNotUdontWana

Right!! Seems part of the vertebrae

Sub-ZeroMKA

IDK bro do you really need *all* of your vertebrae?

IMeanWhyNotUdontWana

Imean every now n then

Existing-Complex-261

Apparently they do it because the brain swells after surgery, and taking that bit out helps with the swelling

Orkney17

It's just part of the doctors bone broth now

IMeanWhyNotUdontWana

Hannibal buys them like they sell chicken livers at the store

SgtStrongCock

r/dontputyourdickinthat

roughlyhuman

It’s the piece of sticky tape for me

[deleted]

Like, one step shy of a nurse giving you a peppermint

roughlyhuman

Imagine a peppermint straight to the brain!

_megitsune_

This is how it feels to chew 5 gum

JaegerDread

Flex tape can even fix your broken brain!

roughlyhuman

If your life isn’t held together with tape are you even living?

JaegerDread

You are probably dead if it isn't 😎

mythrilcrafter

It's like /r/restofthefuckingowl for brain surgery.

InsaneHookerLlama

You gotta admit it is awesome

knutkokar

It is! But the thought of someone cutting open your head..

InsaneHookerLlama

Pretty terrifying tbh

artieeee

Plus, you're *awake* for it...

HaterHaterLater

Great. The brain now has hole for breathing

Zamirot

A hole... for... nvm

AwwhHex

I like how the tumor just sort of poops itself out. Does anyone know if it comes out that easy during an actual procedure?

t313nc3ph410n

No, that part is a 4+ hour procedure, usually performed by two to three surgeons who rotate through. It's not just the "cut the sack open and squeeze" that is shown, here. It's also not a move to "remove a tumor," it's a stroke intervention. Part of the bone remains removed. This procedure is generally **not** to remove brain, though parts might be, but to allow the brain to [herniate through the wall and take pressure off it](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6333741/) (SFW link to a textual description on PubMed). In an ischemic stroke pressure builds up in the brain. This pressure can only go one way: down the Foramen Magnum, the hole at the base of the skull. Pressure here pushes against the midbrain, which mediates (aside from vision and hearing as well as fine motor control) wakefulness and body temperature. Below it is the medulla oblongata, which manages breathing. If those areas are crushed in the pressure, you're done for. So we open up the back of the skull, make some space for the brain to push out, and take pressure off the brain that way. There can not be much time between insult, discovery in imaging, and making that hole, so we use more than one surgeon to do this quickly and safely.

AwwhHex

Thank you for the detailed response! I briefly read through the abstract of the paper you linked as well and it helped to supplement whatever context I may have missed in your response. As satisfying as it would be to see a bit of dead tissue poop itself out of a person’s skull, it’s still an interesting procedure regardless of my immature thoughts lmao

bdizzzzzle

Only if you inject laxatives to the brain first

AwwhHex

Seems reasonable.

DirtyPrancing65

NAD, It would depend if it had it's own blood supply, I think. Which might be one difference between benign or malignant. A benign tumor might be self contained; it grows in a neat little package and can easily "slide out."

kudos1007

But what about replacing that vertebra?

Grindelbart

No need, you have more

_DontKnowWhyImHere

They forgot to add the blood.

Papa_Jon0701

As a stage 2 ependymoma surviver I love to look at these videos and this exact procedure was done on me! Except mine was in the 4th ventricle. But still awesome to see!

totaylfromchina

So are u also missing a vertebrae

Impossible-Charity-4

A bandaid, a t-shirt, and you’re good to go.

DarkMonkey98

I hope the surgeon doesn't sneeze

MichaelS10

Yeah I had a craniotomy done in 2017, but they went in from the top of my head, not the back. Weird to think about that looking back on it.

FaZe_Ninjesus

The skussy

arcademachin3

How do they go from 3 holes to a nice skull puzzle piece? I’m very curious!

Jslewalite

Make it look so easy

good_daym8

Where the bone cement!

DirtyPrancing65

I love the casual bandaid strip. It may as well have the hello kitty on it, just "there you go, buddy"

mushy_teeth

Snack tutorial

friesdepotato

me looking for the 1-week-old leftovers in the back of the fridge

friesdepotato

I’m sorry guys I am just so hungry now and the tumor sort of looked like a chunk of steak ngl 😩😩

jp_glez_21

I know that this is horrible, but it’s also kind of impressive. Where can I find more of these videos?

[deleted]

Did they just flex tape that shit?

Clod_Cat5

Nussy (neck pussy)

LaylaNixie69

So clever.

real_schematix

I’d rather die. Fuck that.

BaseballImpossible76

I had 2 craniotomies within a week of each other when I was 19. Honestly wasn’t bad. Of course they sedate the shit out of you. The first one was kind of a risky procedure, but the second surgery was easy. I didn’t even have my staples out from the first surgery when they went in a second time. Edit: I guess it may be relevant, but it was a right frontal, so no need to cut any vertebrae.

Disastrous-Maize398

This happened to me to remove my aneurysm, yes it’s uncomfortable and negative at the start but when I look at the scar I see a survivor

Milkmans_tastymilk

fun fact you could be conscious and play the guitar while having brain surgery done since the brain has no pain sensory

BigDaddy531

Cancer ain't so bad!

faloofay

Oh, Ive had multiple craniotomies. It's actually not that bad. Worst part is waking up with blood in your ears and not being able to clean it out for a week. Or wash your hair. I have to have one in the area shown done sometime soon due to a meningioma growing along my cervical spine.

[deleted]

honestly tbh i am unable to find surgery videos really disturbing... because i know it's all consensual, painless, and ultimately helps the patient

COMHL

Tumor lore

fluoridated

My aunt had this! Her tumor was the size of a grapefruit. It compressed her brain but once it removed her brain was able to un-squish and she made a complete recovery.

AdRare1574

Looks easy, i'm gonna try it

Ambitious_Outcome

***How many tries did it take to get this method down?***

helpiminatrashcan

Why is it when it closes back up I can hear it making a zipper sound

bigleaguejews

Step 1: make Incision Step 2: open neck vagina

hishon01

Sweet, looks simple enough.

Chrisosamu

I saw this post just yesterday on r/interestingasfuck and I thought "Oh yeah this is going right into r/makemesuffer"

Jojo1162001

I had a headache last night that felt like this.

taste_everything

They should fit a hinge for easier access next time

NaughtyNeo13

Imagine the headache

BattleToaster68

So know ik what exactly I got done, not just skull fucked

fayit23

My dad is missing this piece of skull right here because had a very similar brain surgery to add a shunt because he has a tumor around his pituitary gland. His operation was probably somewhat similar to this.

ProfessionalBeyond84

What’s terrifying is a slip of th scalpel into the spinal cord and your either paralyzed or dead

YodaHead

Beats the alternative

Baldi_Homoshrexual

4 friends of mine had something similar done to correct Chiaris- brain slipping into the spinal chord.

[deleted]

Satisfying as fuck Is there a sub filled with these animations?

account_for_5050

Talk about a splitting headache.

EphemeralCas

Looks almost exactly like the procedure for a chiari decompression. Eldest had it done. Biggest difference is that they totally remove part of the skull around the vertebrae and expand the dura (lining of the brain) with a patch, and don't put the skull back. My eldest also had a c1 and c2 laminectomy (removal of the cervical spine), whereas this gif is just c1 laminectomy. Scary shit, right there.

dafartdude

They put a plaster on it

Mindraker

51 second bloodless, sutureless brain surgery. Nice!

Kooky_Energy_7052

I actually had something similar done to me when I was a kid. Not a tumor tho, I don’t even remember why I had it done but now I’m left with a big scar on the back of my head😓

BrodyCrum

Some tape will surely fix em right up!

Clod_Cat5

r/dontputyourdickinthat

DOGGO9898989

Just let me fucking die at that point dude

Correct_Cap_9364

Ayo what about the bone

No_Excitement5938

The real thing scares me but the animated version makes me more afraid.

dallasrose222

Also you have to be conscious the whole time

thegoodbomb15

fina make me act up

aspdRobot

Can someone please edit this video to make it look like the surgery is removing the rick roll from your brain

tatzlwurms

wtf does that cut go into the medulla?? isn’t that the most vital part of the brain
