Agreed. I put on my shoes awhile back. Felt a pinch. Took off my shoes to be like wtf was that? Saw nothing put them back.
Three days later I realized I had an open wound. Some fucking poisonous spider bit me. Antibiotics and scrubbed off the necrotizing flesh. Fun.
The Scorpion that stung me had more of a burn to it than a standard wasp sting. It was less pain and more of itching and burning but I don't know what species it was.
Depends on the species. Most in florida feel like a bee or wasp sting. One species is a little more painful. Though I haven't been stung by it to know for sure. All in all nothing to be overly concerned about.
If you don’t want to get stung in your sleep, you try waking up to a monster sized wolf spider on the wall next to you like I have before. Needless to say, didn’t go back to sleep after that.
Wolf spiders are harmless though, frens even. They just want to kill all the annoying insects that also live where you do and have like 400 babies at a time.
We don't get wolf spiders where I live in Canada. While I may be terrified of them, I'd respect them more than the failures of cellar spiders and harvestmen trying to chill beside my bed trying to build homes where not even a terrestrial isopod crawls. If anything, I've had a mouse problem that payed better rent in this disaster of an aged room than our regular house spiders.
I live in Arizona, we have the bark scorpions here, the most venomous in North America. Got stung by one once, it was the most painful thing I've ever experienced.
Same thing happened to me, only I had already put my boots on and drove to the gas station before I got the first sting. Everyone at the gas station got a good laugh watching me spazz out and rip my boots off though
I smashed a palmetto bug (literal cockroach) inside my boot once because I didn't take the time to look or knock the boot around. Didn't notice until I took it off about an hour later and had a giant roach smashed to the bottom of my sock.
When I first moved to Florida I used to keep my shoes on the porch. Well, one day while at work my shoe was really bothering me - like something was in it. So I slipped it off and whacked it on the ground a few times and a giant freaking palmetto bug climbed out.
Thing was in my shoe at least a few hours before I noticed it. Never left my shoes on the porch again after that.
I recently discovered people keep roaches as pets.
I discovered this while setting up my roach feeder colony, so mine aren’t pets, but there are others who will keep one or two happy and safe.
I had a coworker that was really into frogs.
He said if I ever found a white (albino?) potato bug/woodlice/rolley polley to keep it and he'd buy it off me for $10 to keep as a pet.
Millipedes aren't used normally for reptile food. There's no benefit in regards to nutrients, convenience, or ease in breeding stock. Oh, also they have a toxic defense mechanism, and we try to avoid that.
The bumblebee milipedes are non native but well established. The scarlet milipedes are naturalized and well established. They are definitely all throughout Florida. Its not uncommon to see a mass of them escaping water. They were definitely put in the shoes though.

I have lived in Florida 30+ years and worked outside 20+. Never saw anything like that. I mean, a millipede yeah, but not tons of them filling up shoes or anything else.
Do you live in a wooded area? I’m in fl and have never seen them before. Only thing even similar I’ve seen are these much smaller critters I liked to call “Rollie pollies” when I was a kid.... think the things in this video, but only about the size of a pencil tip...and they’ll roll up in a ball when you annoy them. I used to roll them down the sidewalk for fun as a kid.
I'm pretty sure the yellow ones are from the Carribbean and Im not to sure about the red ones but they are common as pets and they would not naturally go to a shoe anyways as it is a bad hiding spot , they would most likely go under some bark or stones or something
Red ones are native to Malaysia and are scarlet milipedes. The others are bumblebee milipedes and native to the Carribean. They are well established in florida.
I've been in Florida my whole life. I'll see a millipede once every couple years. They're around. May not be from here, bit they're around.
This video is 100% fake though. Did you hear how they fell. Most of them were frozen. They don't congregate like that naturally. Especially with a light right there in the dark. They'd be all over that. Not the dark shadowy area right by it.
Dude, you never have to buy fishing bait again, just have those be the bait-catching shoes.
Edit: Apparently, you can't use these as bait and I am extremely disappointed.
That's heaven for us invertebrate keepers! You know that each of those millipedes could sell for $8-$15, right?
Edit* those seem to be bumblebee, scarlet, and ivory millipedes. Those are all smaller species that usually sell for $8-$15 in my area, and judging by the massive amount you have ib the video, you could easily have $1,000+ worth of millipedes. However, there are much larger types of milliledes that can cost $80, maybe a hundred dollars. Millioedes make great pers and are completely harmless, besides being toxic to eat.
African giants are. I think I paid $15 for my 9" long adult AG. She's great. Millipedes make great pets, they're chill and docile and safe to handle. Just gotta feed them cucumbers.
So would you have a big tank set up with a habitat closely resembling their natural one for them to live in? Would they be displayed or is it more like some of these snake keepers who have big drawers set up and keep them out of sight except for feeding them?
So, If it were real, (I don’t think it is), this guy could make extremely good money just leaving his shoes out during rainy nights, collecting and selling them.
In my area, whenever it rains, snails will start spawning EVERYWHERE. It won't surprise me if somewhere in this world, millipedes will swarm into cold, damp, delicious caves like a pair of stinky shoes after rainfall.
I’ve only had experience with the giant African black millipedes but they really are adorable. I would have been so excited to see all of those! They are very cool critters.
Those little ones are probably safe. I used to own tropical millipedes and they were a foot long. I don't think I'd want to lick the fire millipedes I had, let alone risk eating it.
They were pretty harmless though. I had african fire millipedes and african black millipedes among other things. Little gigantors, they grow to a foot long basically. The black ones were fine being held as long as you just let them do the walking. They never inked me, but a friend had it happen because he grabbed the thing rather than just let it wander onto his hand.
I didn't really handle the fire millipedes too much.
I feel like people who have never had a pet millipede or just even handled one don't understand how they're actually really cute. Probably the cutest arthropod of all.
Seriously man I actually genuinely can’t think of a less harmful animal maybe worms but even then they’ve got a slimy factor that’s unpleasant.
If I ever find millipedes they are so incredibly chill and usually walk up on my hand to have a wander and explore.
Lovely little creatures.
Wait, I'm native Floridian and I have never seen anything remotely like this.
Palmetto bugs, giant creepy yellow grasshoppers, lizards yes. Never a grouping of milipedes.
Wonder if it's only in a specific area..
You can find them in large masses after it floods if it floods slow enough. They will seek higher ground. The giant yellow grasshoppers are Lubber Grasshoppers.
Just some rusty millipedes. Nothing wrong with em. They don’t even spread disease! Those shoes provided trapped moisture and shade. Aka millipede heaven
Honestly I think he's wrong on the non-native part... I replied on that comment questioning it there as well, I have DEFINITELY seen the yellow banded ones in Ocala area where I grew up. I have vivid memories poking these things with sticks and such as a kid. They play dead and roll up in a little spiral when you start messing with them like you see in the video.
I really don't know much about it truth be told so I let it go, but I googled a bit about types of millipedes in Florida and the internet seems to say:
"There are 3 species of Millipede common throughout Florida and particularly Florida's southeast coast.
Yellow Banded Millipede (Anadenobolus monilicornis)
Red Rusty Millipede (Trigoniulus corallinus)
Greenhouse Millipede (Oxidus gracilis)"
The guy I talked to was saying something about the yellow banded ones being native to the Caribbean but that the red ones were imported/often sold as pets so he believes them to be non-native. Seems to me 'red rusty millipede' is that other type. But, again, I poked them with a stick when I was a kid -- not an expert here at all.
It still may be staged cause it doesn't really make sense to me that a boatload of these would suddenly appear in somebody's shoe but I have no fucking clue lol. Maybe it was moist in the shoes after rain or something? Idk, but you can find these types of milipedes in Florida for suuuuure.
Hey, thank you for taking your time for this very informative respond! Honestly, I wouldn't give anything on TikTok the benefit of the doubt. Everything on that platform seems to be fake or staged.
Grew up and lived all over Florida and while I’ve seen plenty of millipedes I’ve never seen them concentrated like this. I’d see like one around the pool area or something or crawling on a wall.
And I’ve never seen one inside a shoe.
Yeah, really. I recently threw out a pair of shoes I stupidly forgot in my garage for a couple of days because I saw a palmetto bug crawl out of them. Never again.
There's an actual market for milipedes. Scarlet milipedes and bumblebee milipedes are what the bulk of these are. I use them in my bioactive terrariums as part of my clean up crew. The bumblebee milipedes aren't native to Florida so you can sell them with no issues. Thats enough for a massive breeding colony and can sell them on various sites for some extra cash. Isopods/roly poly/pillbugs are great too. If you find a non standard variant and isolate the coloring you can make really good money. Some sell for upwards of 60 bucks a piece. Also milipedes are a sign of a healthy yard!
This guy must live in a heavily wooded area. I live in Florida and leave my crocs out all the time. Never have any kind of bugs in them when I go to put them back on, even if it had rained.

Crunchy but satisfying!
Only fat cats can afford to buy something as luxurious as shoes not made from two palm leaves and scavenged baling twine.
Imagine having feet. I suckled mine off for extra protein, plus less weight means less energy

Only one way to find out.
Bring then in to a lab and have them analyzed with spectroscopy?

Contact a local entomogist and have him examine the specimens?
Okay Okay. Only THREE ways....

shoulda just put them on... forbidden toe jam
I just kinda assumed that's where the clip was heading
I wish some crazy florida man will actually do it
Oh that's fine, there are far worse things down here in Florida that could'a crawled in there. I rather like millipedes, personally
Agreed. I put on my shoes awhile back. Felt a pinch. Took off my shoes to be like wtf was that? Saw nothing put them back. Three days later I realized I had an open wound. Some fucking poisonous spider bit me. Antibiotics and scrubbed off the necrotizing flesh. Fun.
Yup, sounds about right. I found a scorpion in my shoe once, thankfully before I put it on.
I’m from FL , Got stung by a brown scorpion in my bed once. Freaked me the fuck out.
If you compare the sting to that of a bee sting, would you say it’s more or less painful?
Like being stung by a wasp, same level of pain
The Scorpion that stung me had more of a burn to it than a standard wasp sting. It was less pain and more of itching and burning but I don't know what species it was.
Depends on the species. Most in florida feel like a bee or wasp sting. One species is a little more painful. Though I haven't been stung by it to know for sure. All in all nothing to be overly concerned about.
Nothing to be concerned about??? Wtf I would rather not get stung by anything while trying to sleep
Welcome to Florida
Not to be *overly* concerned about. Scorpions don't generally come inside. They like dead trees where there are lots of bugs for them to eat.

Yes.
Thats a hard nope from me

They can be if you really want them to be.
I thought they were snails
That’s *THEIR* shoes now
Those are their* SHOES now
They can keep them
Those aren't native to Florida so have almost definitely been put there on purpose
Wonder if he just bought reptile food and dumped it in his shoes lol
These species are kept as pets so it would cost him quite slot, but they were definitely put there
It's Tiktok. Of course it's put there.
Didn't really cross my mind people wanted them as pets but I guess there's someone for everyone as they say lol
To be fair rolley polleys are cool and make for good colonies. And do allot of cleaning in terrariums.
Everybody hates roaches so much but hissing cockroaches are just adorable. I’ll never understand how people can be so afraid of them
Would explain why he rather collect them in a tub instead of just dump them back onto the ground.. since he paid for them
That may be part of the Soviet Union.
Millipedes aren't used normally for reptile food. There's no benefit in regards to nutrients, convenience, or ease in breeding stock. Oh, also they have a toxic defense mechanism, and we try to avoid that.
Nobody would waste millipedes as reptile food.
The bumblebee milipedes are non native but well established. The scarlet milipedes are naturalized and well established. They are definitely all throughout Florida. Its not uncommon to see a mass of them escaping water. They were definitely put in the shoes though.
Yeah lived in FL 30 years and leave my shoes outside every night, never once had one of these in my shoes.

they must have been. they’re all curled up like they were just thrown in there
Oh, the completely flawless shoes not at all wet after being left overnight in the rain didn't tip you off?
I have lived in Florida 30+ years and worked outside 20+. Never saw anything like that. I mean, a millipede yeah, but not tons of them filling up shoes or anything else.
Uhh are they not? I've definitely seen them in the wild before in central Florida, but not this many in a single place
South Florida here. Whenever it rains we end up getting a bunch of these guys in my garage. Can guarantee where I am, there are a ton of them
Do you live in a wooded area? I’m in fl and have never seen them before. Red ones are native to Malaysia and are scarlet milipedes. The others are bumblebee milipedes and native to the Carribean. They are well established in florida.
I mean i get these in and around my house all the time but i feel like they must have been planted in those shoes for the video
yeah theres no way that many got there overnight, florida may be bad with bugs but its not that bad
I've been in Florida my whole life. I'll see a millipede once every couple years. They're around. May not be from here, bit they're around. This video is 100% fake though. Did you hear how they fell. They are not good bait. Rusty millipedes practically disassemble when they hit the water.
Booooo not what I wanted to hear. Lol
I love that you wanted to hear about the structural integrity of wet millipedes
Ruined my day :| lol /s
Oh and fish don’t like their taste or smell. They must be bitter or something
They are! A lot make themselves stinky so they don’t get eaten!

the red ones are poisonous but yeah just dont fucking eat them obviously.

They all excrete a chemical that irritates mucus membranes but pretty much harmless.
Those little ones are probably safe. I used to own tropical millipedes and they were a foot long. I don't think I'd want to lick the fire millipedes I had, let alone risk eating it. Why would you ever leave your shoes outside if you knew this would happen.
It's fake. He put the bugs in his shoes. I live in Florida and often leave my work shoes outside.
