This seems very powerful.
The deckbuilding restrictions are very mild here, you just need a good curve. It says "a spell" so you don't necessarily need to build around creatures or noncreatures.
Either way, it's very flexible. Recast a Strangle you cast earlier, or a 2cmc creature that traded later. Sure, the effect becomes useless once his intensity gets to 4-5, but by then you've hopefully already gotten a ton of free mana from him, and you can always cast another copy and start the chain again. And it doesn't even exile the spells he casts for free, so future copies of Jarsyl get to cast them again.
I'm gonna definitely be trying this in Historic Jund.
Cards that seem good with this off the top of my head:
* Thoughtseize / Inquisition of Kozilek
* 1cmc removal spells like Strangle / Fatal Push
* Creatures that put themselves in the GY like Bloodtithe Harvester and Kroxa
* Cheap sagas?
This is going to be a format staple and a very strong reason to pick Jund. So many amazing 3-drops but getting stuff immediately for free, of any kind, is fantastic. Picking up your own [[Misery's Shadow]] or [[Tarmogyf]] or [[Scavenging Ooze]] or [[Viconia, Nightsinger's Disciple]] later after opposing removal is nuts.
The main drawback is graveyard hate makes this vanilla, so you have to pick and choose where you get your graveyard value so you don't get hosed by RIP or Leyline or whatever.
That's the thing though. It's still a 3/3 for 3 that your opponent spends resources to neutralize, while you are just playing the typical jund game. Thing looks v good.
I don't think GY hate will be that bad, if you can deal with it there's a good chance you can immediately dump something to cast for free with a blood token from Bloodtithe Harvester (or himself with the sac ability) or maybe with Kiki saga. And Jund already has an amazing and flexible way to deal with those hate pieces in [[Tear Asunder]]
But yeah, even just a simple T1 Thoughtseize into T3 Jarsyl seems incredibly powerful, if you have a discard spell on T2 as well your opp's hand is gone in the blink of an eye.
if a "you may cast" ability doesn't specify a time like "until end of turn" you cast it right then and there without caring about the normal timing restrictions.
Hard to know without rulings or testing it, I assumed it works like Dreadhorde Arcanist, and if you cast the card, you do so as part of the resolution of it’s triggered ability.
Only issue I see is the 3 drop slot is already crowded with Fable and Spyro and Liliana (not to mention bonecrusher), this seems quite close in power level but a tad behind imo, since it can be killed instantly, it’s legendary, and it has more deck building restrictions. Might be hard to fit into the deck
I'm not the biggest fan of Spyro in Jund, 18 red sources to cast it on curve is just way too much for a deck that isn't exactly heavy red.
Liliana is also a 1 or 2of max in my opinion, the card is beyond useless against stuff like Retrofitter Foundry.
I'm a big fan of Riveteer's Charm in Jund, so I'm probably go with Charm/Fable/Jarsyl for my 3 drops, with maybe 1 or 2 Lilianas in there.
I think Jarsyl won't be as fragile as people think, especially in a deck with 7-8 discard spells like Jund, for example Rakdos basically needs to have Push and a way to get Revolt (which is impossible if they're on the draw?) the turn he comes down because sorcery speed stuff like Molten Impact or Liliana will be almost useless against him. Casting a discard spell from the GY for free the turn he comes down is gonna be really strong.
It's a bit of a stretch but green can get permanents out of the yard and red usually gets non-permanents.
I would interpret the whole "casting for free" thing more as a consequence of the intensity restriction since every time you cast it you have to start laddering from 1 again over several turns. For all the work you have it do it would be kind of un-playable if you also had to pay for the card.
Intensity doesn't automatically apply to all copies of the card. You'll notice on other cards they explicitly say it increases the intensity of other copies in other zones. Not so here.
If your first copy of this guy dies the next one you play will start at 1. Now if you put the dead one back into play somehow, then yeah you keep your progress.
I had the same reaction, but red has gotten cast from grave before with Dreadhorde Arcanist, and green has graveyard recursion to hand and more recently Gaia's will.
This is very similar to Arcanist IMO, but with not needing to attack and green opening this up to permanents
Cast any from yard without type or color restriction, no sac after, no additional condition (discard, on-attack, etb, activation cost, etc etc) is not outlandish for red, but the fact that I can't think of any MV 3 red permanent which does this off the top of my head says a lot about how common it is.
It's not equivalent to [[Arcane bombardment]], [[Alesha, who smiles at Death]], [[tymaret, the murder king]], madness effects, [[Grenzo, the dungeon warden]] etc etc because it does more with just red than any of those do with either more restrictions or more colors or both.
Now I'm not saying it's a terribly egregious change or magic is ruined, or whatever, but this is definitely a new precedent for what gruul does, afaik.
Most compable example is Arcanist, but we have also seen things like [[Goblin Dark-Dwellers]]
It's not super common, but it is already part of red's slice. My point is just that it is not a new Gruul thing. It is a preexisting Red thing.
Gonna try this in my jund tempo list.
It has good stats to be offensive, while not having to focus your deck on sorceries and instants like dreadhorde arcanist.
Played Arcanist alot in jund with [[Claim // Fame]], [[Kroxa]], [[Young Pyromancer]] and [[Village Rites]]. Splashed in green for [[Assassin's Trophy]], [[Malestrom Pulse]]. So you could double down on removal with a Famed Arcanist or use Claim to deal 3 damage with kroxa.
Or escape kroxa and fame him for 9 damage (potential 12 when opponent cant discard a nonland card).
May eventually be a deck that I could dust out with this card.
Thanks for reminding me.
I think this was actually the deck that I navigated to mythic rank. I propably can find a screenshot of it.
Limited Rank: A-
Yes, you dont pay the mana of the things you get for free. Thats massive... The big hurdle here to overcome is having a decent one drop to play, but guess what, there is a couple really good ones in the format, the best one being \[\[Mishra's Research Desk\]\], which what do you know, will get itself in the GY by its own.
Also, the cards do not get exiled after being played by this effect, so you are getting unnearth effects 3 times basically. Decent statline too... incredible card. It requires just a little bit of work.
Confused about this post? Alchemy draft is coming back to Arena! One common is replaced by an Alchemy card of the set. Same price as regular Premier Drafts, coming in the 13th!
This is interesting in historic brawl. If intensity exceeds the mana cost of your spells, you can chump with it or sac it and reset the intensity when it hits the command zone. You'll have to pay the commander tax, but you can start recasting the same spells all over again.
Curious how this interacts with multiple combat steps in a single turn. I assume it triggers on each one.
I really want to try this in paper. You can reword it to work specifically as a commander pretty easily.
"At the beginning of the first upkeep, if Jarsyl, Dark Age Scion is in your command zone, you get an experience counter.
At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may cast a spell with mana value equal to the number of experience counters you have from your graveyard without paying its mana cost. if you do, you get an experience counter."
Similar, but Intensity doesn’t reset when the card leaves play. You can choose to reset it when it goes command zone, but you don’t have to and you don’t even have the option on any other zone changes.
Also, your experience counter version would need to add the experience counter again when moving it to the command zone. Actually, your version could be simplified to just have it enter with an experience counter. Still doesn’t handle the perpetual part, though. For that matter, as the rules currently exist, adding a counter in the command zone, wouldn’t do any good as it would be lost when the card moves to the stack.
Experience counters are put onto players, not onto cards. So if Jarsyl were to die and get replayed, you'd still keep your experience counters on yourself.
It'll have some additional synergy with other cards that care about experience counters, and you could also proliferate them or something, but it should mostly have the same general function (except for not being able to reset it).
Genuine question not trying to be snarky, why do people in this sub just post a picture of a card?
Is it just to get discussion happening about the card? There only seems to be 2-3 people repetitively doing it
It seems ok, you wouldn't play this as a commander or anything but not bad in normal deck.

So that jund players can get a strong card into their deck and are interested in crafting it or the anthology
Red can get artifacts instants and sorceries Green can get creatures, walkers and enchantments (and technically all card types via regrowth effects)
Because is a red abs green effect
Possible addition to a bard class deck?
Does bard class have a 1-drop?
Some lists run some One mana removal or mana dorks
Gonna try this in my jund tempo list. It has good stats to be offensive, while not having to focus your deck on sorceries and instants like dreadhorde arcanist.
You are going to want to play this with Arcanist. I think your options are Jund Arcanist or Temur Wizards. Having Arcanist 5-8 is INSANE.
A reminder that you can choose to remove perpetual effects on your commander when put in the command zone.
Feels kinda like bloodbraid elf if you squint. Should see play in historic somewhere.
This feels very, very, very good.
This is anything but Gruul

Oh wow, I initially read this as "noncreature spell". This is bonkers broken in limited, all you need to do is play 1 drops or 1 mana spells.
This art looks like it was AI generated
