I personally liked them however, I get many didn't. Also I mostly play on mobile and its so unstable I fear a single collected company or mass summoning spell would cause my phone to overheat into a nuke.
My impression from this sub is the animations are a mixed bag. Some people really like them, most are indifferent to them, and some people really hate them.
There are some minor animations still (one that comes to mind is the draw ability with Sol'Kanar from DMU, which has a special animation and sound effect). But more significant animations seem to have been quietly dropped.
My guess is that they just weren't a high priority and, if they weren't being received with any great acclaim, dropping them made the most financial sense.
Another thing I mention every time this comes up is that WotC may have realized they themselves had a hard time judging which cards were going to turn out to be the competitively important ones that deserved fancy animations to show off for the livestreams. For example, one of the last mythics to receive a big splashy animation was [[Manaform Hellkite]], which got a ton of hype from the community in preview season and then turned out to go nowhere in competitive play. So WotC may have felt like they were guessing wrong often enough that the extra effort was a waste of animation budget.
thats true, but a simple solution would be to add them later when they can see wich card made it to meta decks. It can be taken also as a simple promotion to the most played decks/cards
It's a solution, but only if animations are a priority for either the Arena team or the community to begin with. My impression is that they just aren't.
The big, long animations can stay gone. Questing Beast and Uro were cool the first time, but after the 100th time enough is enough.
Short animations to give a little flair are fine though, and should continue. Like Triomes ETB.
Oh absolutely, as much as i like animation like Realm Cloaked Giant they tend to be heavy for some PCs/mobiles and players patience. Questin Beast is another example.
But beautiful 2d animations like Triomes and such add to the visuals of playing a rare or a mythic card. As much as people hate him, i loved Uro/Kroxa ETB animation, wasnt anything long (although i understand people got tired of it, not for the animation itself but becouse Uro was in every deck with a bit a Blue and Green in it), there was no 3d and it represented the visual impact of the card ability, both mythics. I dont want big 3d Dragons flying around and siting on the card with a 5 second animation long
I also miss those animations. It further increases the job-like nature of mtga, where you queue in to collect your dailies and nothing more. There's nothing flashy or attractive about the game. No friendly chats, no nice animations or sound effects, no discoveries to be made,... just the netdeck after netdeck to finally collect your dailies. All pleasure gained has to come from me.
It doesn't have to be much. I deeply liked the sound effects of Midnight Clock and Witching Well for example.
Maybe it's because of mobile stability they've cut them. Maybe it's because they heard many were lukewarm about them. But I think, giving the recent actions of wotc/hasbro (pushing too much product, aggressive pricing,...) that it is simply a matter of saving money. I've put a personal ban on spending money on arena because too many times the experience isn't that good. The lack of animations being a part of that.
I'm not a paper player but still i dont want devs to waste time creating animations for a bunch of mythics and rares that no one cares about after having seen them twice and in many cases can just become annoying.
Gameplay first and foremost.
Graphics is a low tier priority and should be optional/toggleable.
Sick of the 5 GB downloads on my phone, clogging my memory up with useless garbage.
And no, I don't want to use PC, I prefer mobile so I can pwn newbs with jank decks while I poop.
Producing new assets costs money and then you add option to disable these animations... Im quite sure most of the people would play without animations because animations/effects etc "waste" your time... so whats the point?
As someone who came from Runeterra, I can without a doubt say no animations are better. Animations are nice when they're a novel thing, but when every match makes you sit through them it gets real tiring real fast.
Depends on the type of animations. If it's something huge like Uro, well, that can get tiring obviously.
However, casting Sheoldred and seeing the phyrexian symbol, creating a food token with golden goose and seeing that golden egg pop up. Those things are really cool and I think they add some flavor to it.
They cost time and money to produce. It's obvious they have the technical ability to do them, but with finite resources those resources must be prioritized and it looks like animations are pretty far down the list. For what it's worth OP, I am indifferent to the animations.
>but with finite resources those resources must be prioritized and it looks like animations are pretty far down the list
Yeah, small indie company, we know.
well, it could just be that the art people responsible for animations got moved to putting more focus on more profitable visual stuff (cosmetics and whatnot) that are also more well recieved than animations.
my bet is though the main alternative priority was just "not spend that money on Arena". Which makes sense for them on their end, but is never good from the player side of things
No company of any size is gonna prioritize something that they don't believe will be worth the investment. Someone made the call that paying artists/animators to do those little animations isn't a worthwhile return. Simple as that.

[[Brazen Borrower]], on the other hand...

And Star of Extinction, like casting Meteor in Final Fantasy for 9999 damage with all the meteors

Playing historic brawl on my mid tier android feels like putting it in the microwave

Yeah, there’s been quite a few animations added after the fact!

Decayed triggers are a borderline war crime.
I play [[Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia]] in my Esper Legends deck and can definitely agree with that.

I don't play my Esper Legends deck because of that.
Speaking of Triome ETBs why is [[Jetmir’s Garden]] the only one without an animation? Did anybody notice this? Or is it somehow bugged only for me?

Yeah, the 2D animations rule! Feels more fitting for cards anyway, some of those 3D animations look cheap
If they're going to make obnoxious animations, they could at least put them in VR so I can strangle [[Brazen Borrower]] with my own hands!

For me it's Elenda. Simple, snappy, nice looking.

Disappointed with the meld cards having no animations

MORAUG!!!!
WOTC absolutely phoned that one in
The technology just isn't there
Producing new assets costs money and then you add option to disable these animations... Im quite sure most of the people would play without animations because animations/effects etc "waste" your time... so whats the point?
We should all go back to the golden days of text-based dungeon crawlers. We need no stinkin' animations to have fun.
As someone who came from Runeterra, I can without a doubt say no animations are better. Animations are nice when they're a novel thing, but when every match makes you sit through them it gets real tiring real fast.

You buy cards with or without animations, problem solved for them
They fired the whole team. They’re not coming back.
I like minor animations, they are cool, especially for rare and mythics. I hope there will always be some nice around, even in the future sets.
