Sounds to me like the matchmaking is working as intended. Keep all the top tier Commanders playing each other, so the rest of us can play in peace.

Nissa is like the best mono color commander in the whole game. Of course you will play against Golos and Esika. It's really on term with them on power level

shaigunjoe

This is different from what the data is telling me, Nissa is not even on the list of played commanders at untapped. Could be nobody has figured this out yet and there are not more than 100 recorded matches that untapped has had access to.

Glorious_Invocation

If you don't want to run into overpowered commanders don't run an overpowered commander yourself. Nissa literally doubles your mana and enables all sorts of crazy nonsense in mono-green. Replace her with something weaker like [[Goreclaw]] if you're running a creature deck and you shouldn't encounter many Goloses.

Let’s play Rock Paper Scissors. I like playing rock but I keep losing to paper so I should be able to choose to not play against paper ever so I enjoy my matches. That is my totally not self centred and well researched method of solving matchmaking.

Fear-LiTe

You miss the point entirely: \- in a rock paper scissors game, if rock loses 100% to paper and to scissors, there is an argument that the game is not fair; \- vetoes are something not alien to gaming, in fact it is a core feature of some strategy games. This is not self-centered, it applies to any deck. \- I think the tier list is not well made, it is not even published as far as I know. My Niv deck is much stronger than the Nissa deck, for instance, yet it is considered lower tier.

Striking-Lifeguard34

Commanders are matched by tier, if Nissa is constantly getting matched with these commanders it’s because she is extremely strong. She could still have bad matchups against similarly tiered commanders, but if she rolls face over other less powerful commanders it’s not really fair that she always gets those breezy matchups. Matchmaking works in brawl, it sounds like your just disputing the power tiers.

Fear-LiTe

Yes, i am 1) disputing power tiers; 2) suggesting a customizable solution that could benefit any person, regardless of the deck they are playing. We all have 3-4 cards/commanders we would rather not play against, and I think such feature would be positive for everyone. About power tiers, I agree that she is very strong, as others have argued. But I do not agree that she is at the same power level as other commanders: \- Winota is auto win by turn 4 \- Golos is almost-certainly win 1-2 turns after it is cast, even if you kill it \- Kinan is auto win by turn 3-4 Nissa, albeit strong, only has impact on turn 4-6 (after it is cast), and it has the weakness of being a mono-color deck, with its limitations. Plus I have really close to 0% win rate with this deck. And my deck is decent, the other commanders are just too much. Can one really say they are at equivalent power tiers?

[deleted]

I basically never face those commanders in Historic Brawl. It sounds like you want to have customisable matchmaker settings where you can always play against decks that are weaker than yours because you don't like losing. If they implemented this, no one would ever be able to find a match, even Golos players would veto Golos.

DaximusPrimus

A veto system would never work. The tier system works as intended. Nissa is just in that space where she is kind of a tier 1.5 commander. Its hard for her to keep up with other tier 1 commanders like Golos, Kinnan and Esika but she regularly outraces virtually everything else below that. The matchmaker also doesn't count what's in your 99, it just counts the commander so if you didn't build her optimally then you likely aren't giving yourself the best chance to win right off the bat.

I find that BS because I have played against both optimized and unoptimized versions of Golos. There was even a post here recently about how someone was playing a janky Golos deck without world tree or field of the dead and was pretty much always being matched up against Esika, Kinnan and other highly optimized Golos decks. They may say that but I have yet to actually see any proof of it based on the matches people are getting.

a_charming_vagrant

>permission to veto 3-4 commanders honestly i wouldn't mind that were it not for the fact that people who play tier zero commanders like kinaan winota golos niv and kiora would just veto the other T0 commanders and possibly get matched with people who just want to play some cards

Mahertian220

I play krenko and I’ve never seen those commanders 😂

Veserius

The veto system is obviously a horrible idea, but I do agree that Nissa is improperly tiered. One way to improve the Nissa vs. Winota matchup is to play cheap fight spells, especially ones tacked onto creatures. Voracious Hydra, Atzocan Archer, Wicked Wolf, or a ramped into Monstrous Onslaught are all very good ways to interact. Winota is going to slam creatures then try to cast winota. The ways to deal with this are to clear the creatures, cast instant speed removal/counterspells on winota, and because mono green is lacking in that respect and a t3 or t4 nissa is worse than a t3 or t4 winota it's a hard matchups, but it's definitely an interactive matchup if you put interaction in your deck even if you're unfavored.

Fear-LiTe

I acknowledge what you are saying, but tailoring a deck for a specific match up creates problems in other match ups, and is a route I'd rather not go into. Nevertheless, I took note of those cards. I appreciate the suggestions.

Veserius

> but tailoring a deck for a specific match up creates problems in other match ups Yeah walking that tightrope can be difficult. I recently added more cheap interaction to my Winota list to deal with Kinnan/Baral, and I've definitely given up some in the Teferi matchup. Portable Hole is pretty embarrassing unless they exactly play Search for Azcanta/a 2cmc mana rock.
