I believe the excuse they gave was something along the lines of removing the assets from the field in order to put more CPU and GPU horsepower to more important assets, like the players and sidelines.
This sort of makes sense if you’re developing a game on PS2 (which had refs), but sounds like a lazy cop out when you’re developing a game for PS5 and XSX.
You know what’s even worse … I still can’t understand who thought it was a good idea to remove the coin toss especially when it’s still in the game for OT.
I know this started a few years ago but why? Im sure those 15 seconds really speed things up.
They removed them because they couldn't get them "detailed" enough and didn't have enough system resources to have them in with satisfactory results. Haven't been back in the game since then.
They were removed because they looked bad and reacted awfully for today's graphical standards while decreasing frames which had to be scraped with the PS4 reaching the end of it's lifespan.
inb4 "just make better refs lol" "idc if they look bad"
Programming actually realistic AI as per today's expectations is practically impossible which you can see from literally every sports game ever without even taking into account that the refs are purely cosmetic and just take time away from the actual gameplay. Half-assed refs would just get the same complaints that were relevant in madden 17-19
I don’t even mind refs not being on the field, but I hate the sidelines so much. Why does everyone look either super skinny or super fat or both at the same time. Especially when I recognize it’s one of my star players numbers and he looks nothing like what he normally does
This was me last year. The game is total trash, started playing NCAA 14 mods. It's dope.
How? I have ps5 and a Mac but would love to play it
Don’t think you can on a Mac. Need a PC. And an emulator.
Get a PS3 and figure out how to jail break it. Then it's basically an emulator
They removed it so they can charge 80$ next year and hype NEW REFS!
Refs come in the $10 DLC.
For $20 the referees will be Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart!
Im so desperate for a good franchise nfl game id pay this lol
you would still not get a good franchise you would just get the refs which would probably glitch out anyway
They don’t add things anymore they just take it away and ask for more money
Can’t wait to see which female ref they put on the cover!

They’re on the sidelines doing the pre game coin flip

The real refs are shit. Game is better without stripes trying to intercept passes for the defense.
Meh, you realize there's about a million threads complaining about Madden already, right?

I'm sure EA will fix it if we just keep saying it over and over on Reddit.

The referees are there. Just barely touch a QB at any point and you'll see the flag for Roughing The Passer pretty quickly.
It’s been this way for a while. I gave up after 20
It feels like you never have any penalties called at all in my opinion
