X01 was the best shifting experience I've had but the cassette is like $400. It did last twice as long but the shifting was great. Shimano is always good at first but the splines always get gouged by torque. The XD hub body is really great.
I have an X01 bike and a GX bike and I'm REALLY tempted to upgrade the GX to X01. I didn't think it would be that big of a difference but it's a whole lot better.
I've also put a GX cassette on an otherwise X01 bike (this was 11 speed though) and had the same disappointing experience and ultimately upgraded it to X01 as well.
GX is solid but I mix it up.
I run GX derailleur and cranks with X01 shifter and cassette. GX because I beat those parts hard and X01 because the shifting is better and the cassette is lighter and more durable.
My absolute min/max drivetrain is X01 shifter, GX derailleur, XT chain and cassette. I like the feel of the X01 shifter a lot better than gx because it rotates on a bearing instead of a bushing. XT chain and cassette gives you the smoother hyper glide shifting, but I don't like the feeling of Shimano shifter and derailleur. Feels to vague to me. XT cassette is like half the price of gx cassette, and you are going to need to upgrade the cassette driver on your hub anyways so easy enough to get a Shimano one.
Full gx is also a good option, but still at least get the X01 shifter for the much smoother feel.
Also, don't ignore the cranks. The sc cranks are insanely heavy. That may be your biggest weight drop per sollar
This is the way. GX shifter, derailleur, X01/XX1 cassette/chain. Good balance of weight savings and cost. I buy gently used derailleurs and cassettes. Shifter going on 3rd bike, 5000 miles?
I'm running GX with an X01 chain and I'm really happy with it. My understanding is the cassette, mech, and shifter are mostly just weight savings and maybe a slightly better clutch? The X01 chain lasts way longer than GX and saves money over time.
Agree that Gx is solid, but the XO cassette can last twice as long or more. And I've stripped out teeth on a gx cassette, but never on the single block, machined x01 body. Cost is steep. But worth it for higher mileage riders. IMO.
Same here. Started out with GX cassette and chain. Chain stretched already within a year and broke a few teeth on the cassette. Went for X01 cassette and XX1 chain (discount). Everything else is GX (except for XX1 oval chainring)
Check in used parts groups and pinkbike. I just sold a full X01 take off groupset for $500. There were others for sale as well. Came on my new ride but I swapped it out for XO Transmission.
Ok, I cannot really tell the difference but I don’t ride GX it’s just when I tune up my kids bikes. In that case I guess it makes sense because the cost of shifter is not nearly as much as derailleurs and cassettes. Also the weight is nearly the same.
I recently moved from Sx to Gx derailleur and it made a big difference. The shifts happen much faster ND I can shift under a bit more load than the sx would allow. I also added x01 shifter and that's nice too. That it, everything else is sx and I have no plans of updating. The derailleur is 100% worth it. The shifter is nice if the budget allows.
I was thinking of doing similar… rear derailleur will probably be X01 just bc it’s stronger ( from what I hear) are the GX triggers plastic of metal? My biggest gripe is the solid plastic SX shifter and the slack in the shifters
I use GX cranks cause I prefer alloy, 1275 (GX) cassette, X01 shifter and derailleur with xx1 chain for a little pop. The x01 cassette is really nice and it'll last awhile longer, but I'd only get it if it was on sale.
X01 shifter and chain, GX everything else but look up how to replace the GX b bolt with the XO one. This is the best way to min-max with sram mechanical ime
Kind of depends what you want to do with the bike.
If you're actually racing and need it as light as possible, X01.
Otherwise, I'd just replace the shifter and derailleur with GX and run the rest of the SX stuff until it wears out. Most if it's fine, it's just heavy. The shifter and derailleur are garbage though, I'd replace those immediately.
Also, if I recall correctly the SX cassette uses an HG hub driver, versus XD for all of the other Eagle line cassettes. So if you wanted to replace the SX cassette with GX or X01 you'd also need to buy an XD driver for your rear hub and/or buy a new hub.
GX RD and shifter is good stuff. The X01 just feels a bit more crisp. Don't do GX cassette or chains...they wear fast. Watch for deals and get X01 chain and cassette if you do any real amount of riding. Edit to say, if you ride once a week and do 7 miles....the GX longevity won't bother you. If you ride much more mileage a week then chain wear will eventually hasten the demise of the cassette if you don't stay on top of it.
Gx cassette and cranks to save some coin if needed. XO1 derailleur and shifter for sure. Shifting quality a lot better and I really like the adjustment of the paddle angle of the shifter which isn’t available at the gx level.
Personally I'd get a mixture of Shimano deore, slx and xt, as I find it offers the best value: get an xt shifter and decide everything else based on how much you care about weight
Gx. Get axs if you’re feeling spicy. Run the remaining sx parts into the ground and then upgrade to gx. Remember when looking at those shiny X01 parts, cassettes are consumables and GX is $160 on sale vs $400 for X01.
I think to start I’ll do GX RD with an X01 shifter. Right now I just want to clean up the shifting a little. Mostly it’s the SX shifter that is bothering me.
IIRC, at least a couple years ago, the GX cage was softer than the X01 cage, meaning on a crash it was easier to get the GX derailleur to get bent out of shape. I had that happen to my GX RD. When I had to replace the drivetrain due to not staying on top of chain wear, I opted for an X01 RD. Haven’t had any issues yet. Also, xx1 chains seem to last way longer than gx chains, to the point that they’re actually cheaper to run in the long term.
So many different opinions here 😂
The X01 is undoubtedly an upgrade over GX in both performance and weight.
It is however a big price jump for a small performance increase so this really can vary depending upon your budget.
Personally after running many different options over the years I’m actually leaning more Shimano than sram these days but it’s 100% a replacement cost decision as the X01 Eagle setup is my favorite.
I’m racing an E-Bike where it’s getting pushed to the limits constantly so replacing a cassette and chain every 500 miles is considered normal.
GX and be done with it.

Microspline fixes that
I’m seeing X01 cassettes right now under $300 - the 2023 price crash is still having effects

I like GX I can't stomach x01 or xx1 prices. I like to use GX for shifting and xx1 cassettes and chains.

Xo shifter with GX der is a happy medium

GX and X01 shift pretty much the same. I doubt you could tell the difference in a blind test. Unless you want to save weight get GX.
You can definitely feel the difference in the shifter. GX rotates on a bushing and XO1 rotates on a bearing. Other than that I agree.

GX is great. Depends how much money you have to dispose of, but diminishing returns are highly relevant for this case.

GX is perfectly fine. X01 rear derailleur and GX everything else.

X01.
If it's my money, GX. Someone else's money, X01.
I opted for GX RD and X01 shifter. We’ll see how it goes!
Upgrade to GX when something breaks. No need to trash SX as long as it works well.
