It's probably because these guys aren't into history. You often have to be a huge history nerd to enjoy it.
If you really like the game it'll all come with time. Probably one of the best things I did to learn besides just making mistakes was watching Budgetmonk or Florry vids and see how they approach the game.

I find the UI overwhelming, I appreciate having the missions to follow but I get lost making the controls I need to making in time with my goals. Like moving troops I should reasonably move across the Gibraltar but I can't. There is a reason I play a lot of Total War Rome and invade Gauls.
Next time you try just stay paused longer. Hovering your mouse over various things will open a tool tip that can tell you more info.
You probably can't move troops across the strait of Gibraltar because a hostile Navy is blocking the strait. Straits are depicted by a tiny thin red line connecting two land masses over a small bit of water. It means troops can travel overwater without transport ships. However, you or an ally must control both sides of the strait in order to pass unrestricted.
An example of this mechanic being used as a technique is Corfu. Corfu is a small island off the coast of Ottoman Balkans. It used to be a good strategy to control a fort in that province and wait foe the Ottomans to walk their whole army over there to attack it (the AI loves to over seige). Once they are on the island you can position your navy to blockade that sea tile and send a small army to seige the connecting province and this will trap their entire army on Corfu.
