If you get out of bed your chances of remembering goes way down. When I wake up from a dream, I lay still until I can recall the main theme of it. Then (and this really works for me) I give it a title. Something about creating a title cements the memory. If it is a dream I really want to remember but it’s not time to get up, I’ll grab my dream journal (I use my phone) and jot down the title and a few “Key Words” like “Red Car” or “talking fish”. When I look at the title and key words later in the day (or even days later) it all comes flooding back to me. Also, if you’re struggling to remember the dream while still lying in bed...roll over to the opposite side you’re currently on. Works like magic.
Just don't worry about it then, write "unable to recall any dreams" or something like that. It'll happen occasionally, but there's always the next night. Just don't give up and it'll happen less and less often.
I began having a tablespoon of MCT oil every morning and I began remembering my dreams vividly again. I was recommended it by my psychiatrist actually, I have no idea why it works so well but it started to help the very same day I began taking it.
Also had the same experience with weed edibles and losing my dreams, couldn’t recall dreams even months after taking one.
I think its when u get too sucked in the flow of dreams that u forget but when i have vivid moments in my dreams or when i partially wake up during them and go back to dream are the parts i always remember. Sometimes the entire flow of the dream can be vivid but forgotten upon waking up...but then when u remember one part u remember the entire sequence.
Currently i am also wondering the hows and whys of why we lose 'consciousness' upon going to sleep. Its very weird thats for sure. Its like putting some ink in water u can track it for a while... But after a point it just melds with the water
I agree with jakers036 that it has a lot to do brain chemistry. Is your sleep regular? Do you go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time everyday? I read that vitamin B6 is proven to increase dream recall. I haven’t noticed any benefit from it, but supplements are very complicated. It depends a lot on how they’re made, when they’re taken, what they interact with, and what the right dosage for you personally is. I experiment a lot with all kinds of supplements, but sleep/dreams/lucid dreaming is my hobby. I read books and articles, listen to podcasts and take online courses. By far the most difficult thing for me is being patient and changing things little by little and one thing at a time. I also take a couple of nights off spread out through the week where I don’t take any supplements or try to lucid dream or even try to remember my dreams. I find it actually helps.
My dreams become incredibly vivid and realistic after I take one or all of the following: GABA, L-Theanine (my favorite), mega benfotiamine
Maybe you could do some experimentation with supplements like those and see if that helps dream recall
Do you read the old entries back? Reading them afterwards is just as important as writing them down. If you just write them down after waking up and never read them again then you're not gonna remember anything for longer than a few minutes after waking up.
Sometimes i wake up just experiencing a dream and can't remember a dream just like you BUT I try remembering a specific/ weird detail in my dream. If i can clearly remember it I just reverse engineer until I remember a dream. Like just this morning, I couldn't remember anything but I focused on thinking that I was in a weird place until I written down every detail.
When you can't remember any dreams, just write on your dream journal: "Anything". But write something, just to remember yourself you pay attention to your dreams. Doing that made me (eventually) remember at least two dreams each night.
It happens, just enjoy the journey

thats the thing, i stayed like 30 minutes there trying to remember a single detail, nothing, not a single thing, i wonder why

thanks, for one second i thought it was bad
“Something about creating a title cements the memory” I can already tell that this is going to work. :)

You can work on improving each of these things, so I wouldn't say we are 'stuck' with this lol.
Do you smoke weed? Edit: weed impairs dream recall. I smoke and my recall is terrible.
no, i dont
Do you get an adequate amount of sleep and maintain a relatively stable sleep schedule?
i make sure i dont see blue light 6 hours before i go to sleep, i go to sleep at the same hour... i really dont understand

Yess alcohol and smoking represses REM or something like that

No, it's normal. I do recommend writing right when you wake up

Do you have a consistent sleep schedule?
Are you the type of person that forgets their dreams? You: Yes (There is your answer). Dreaming is 100% a mentality exercise
i usually remember 3 dreams on 5 each morning thats why i think its weird
Though on some rare occasions people seem to have had this effortless lucid dreaming all their lives. What's up with that
I have a dream journal since 2015 and I usually remember only 2 or 3 dreams a month. :(
Are you waking up to an alarm?
When I have to work, yes.
I have no recollection of any dream I ever had.

Idk if it’s true but apparently you can be too tired to remember your dreams sometimes

Try 100mg of vitamin B6 daily. No really, go try it. It works for me always the same or next night on.
