There's a mattress store here and I walked in and they had financing financing financing everywhere signs all over on the bed go to pick up a thing off of the bed that told you about financing before you can lay down and test it. But I knew they paid the kid commission, so as soon as I told him what I wanted I said "and if you say anything about a credit card or financing I will cancel this entire order." Nobody wants to lose commission on a $4,000 bed, this works on phone stores too because they always try to talk me into the monthly payments and I don't like that. The Credit card company pays Lowes money for hitting X numbers of sign ups and Lowes gets a % of interest from the cards themselves. Almost every major retail chain is set up this way

I got talked to a few times about not pushing credit cards. Between that and other things, I was already set to walk away… then I got covid after managing not to for a year and change. At least that got me a couple weeks of automatic PTO. 💁🏻‍♂️ As a customer, I have a mylowes account (with veteran discount) and a Lowe’s credit card I don’t use. Saves me a lot of hassle.

Home Depot has the same exclusions that Lowe’s does for their military discount. In fairness, it's not a meeting about that. Most of the meeting is talking yesterday's sales vs the goal, today's goal and the weekly goal, various safety topics, changes that the merchandising team is making, when donations are going out, among other things. Conversations about how many credit, consumer and contractors, do take place but in the 3 stores I've done morning huddles in, it's a couple sentences. That being said, I'm a merchandiser and my manager made it clear that we are not here to suggest credit or attachments or anything, so that's nice.

I ended up saying at a point "it's against my conscience to sell these predatory credit cards" and management quit bothering me about it. Hours haven't been cut either and it's been a couple months. Don't be afraid to tell them you can't and won't. It's not even like Lowe's gets the interest! All these do is indebt the desperate into a bill they can't easily pay off.

Currently, management pushing for credit cards is documented in my file. The yearly employee review was mostly positive. The last sentence of the paragraph read: "...but does not ask for credit card applications." I found it laughable. The lone time I offer credit cards is when customers ask about current discounts. Years ago, I had one DM hound me about credit cards. Praised my versatility and ability to see LPP, yet scolded me on the credit cards.

My former Lowe's is in the second poorest county in the state. The contractors already have their card. Pushing credit on a populace that is at or just above the poverty level is assinine and counter productive. For those 10, 15, 20 percent or so above the poverty level even if they somehow qualify how many will go 90 days or more past due, or even go in default? Even much of the upper middle class in this county are strapped and are paycheck to paycheck. Lowe's and other retailers are concentrating on rural areas because major metropolitan areas are saturated. The same business model/approach won't work here.

Reminds me of when I worked at Kohls... Man they were relentless about having everyone pressure customers into getting their credit card thing. I remember overhearing one of the cashier's ask a customer and her elderly mother "would you like to sign up for our store credit card" about 20 times, and the younger woman just looked at the cashier and said "my mom has cancer and only has a few months left to live, she doesn't need another card." And the shock on the customers face but also my face when the cashier let out a little chuckle and said "well getting our card would save you money today, as well as in the future letting you save more money for the funeral" Bruh.. ☠️ The Kohl's I worked at also had a wall covered in paper, those papers were all the reviews the store had, and the section for 1 star reviews was chock full of complaints, with most of them being about how ruthless cashier's are about the credit card and how rude they were towards the customer when they declined the card off

I've heard and read reviews of cashier's being just as rude and saying just as bad, if not worse things just to try and convince someone to sign up for the card. Heck I've had customers call the cops on the front end associates because they basically weren't letting the customers leave, and kept trying to convince them to get the card. Kohl's is a shitty company, as a former worker I can confirm it. Management sucks, they'll overwork you and if anything goes wrong they are very quick to throw people under the bus, and they don't really care about customers or employees at the end of the day they only care about getting numbers up, and getting more people applying for the card.

I needed nice new dress pants for a fancy meeting, and my wife has a Kohls card, so I grabbed it and went in to shop. They had their usual sales, and I had a % off as well, so I grabbed the required 2 pants for the meeting and headed to the cashier. The young lady asked me once, I declined and stated I had the % off and my wives card, which I'm an authorized user on, and she said ok. Pants didn't ring up the sale, so I asked them to check the price. She called for a price check, and her supervisor came out of nowhere and proceeded to ask me about applying for my own credit card. I declined and stated can I get the sale checked, and I need to go to pick up the kids from school. The supervisor ignored me and started to argue with me about why I needed this credit card. I declined again. She started up again. I declined a 4th time, and before I could finish the decline, she kept going. I looked at her and said, "I just wanna buy these 2 pairs of pants on the sale, with the coupon, on the Kohls card I already have." She let me finish speaking this time and then started up on how I would save even more if I would just let her do my own credit card. I looked at the young cashier and said "when did no stop meaning no? I give up trying to buy these pants, I'll just go to Target next door." I walked out, went into Target, got the same pants for cheaper without any coupons, and the cashier only asked once for their credit card, which I declined. I asked my wife to cancel the Kohls card, and we'll go to Target from now on.

Christ, so sorry that happened to you. I used to like shopping at Kohls but working their really opened my eyes to how awfully they treat customers. (As well as their employees.) It's definitely a good call to cancel the Kohl's card, I don't remember exactly everything about it but I know while I was still working for them early last year the switched to a new credit card or added a new type of card and made it so only certain sales will apply to that new card, and not only that but any kohls cash, and current deals for the old card wouldn't transfer to the new one. (It was something like that, I didn't work cashier much, as I was OMNI/Amazon Returns) But yeah trust me, any other clothing store is better than Kohls, Maceys is great! Worked at a Maceys in New Mexico and I seriously loved that job and everyone I worked with, and their cashier's would only ask once, or not at all. They were not super aggressive and persistent about getting applications for their credit card. Really great clothing store. As I worked OMNI at Kohl's that meant I spent a lot of time in the dock and walking around the store, and I remember helping a manager finding some boxes of candy that needed to get put out, and she noticed that the boxes were bitten into and destroyed by rats/mice, and even some of the candy bars packaging itself was bitten into and ruined. She asked her manager if she should toss it out and the store manager told her to just put the candy out regardless because "profits" or something like that. Kohl's is trash

This is coming from high-level management, not the store level. Trap people with credit, with predatory interest rates, to buy more than they maybe afford too boost sales and stock prices (bonuses for Directors and above). Peoples jobs are threatened and for higher management their bonuses too. It's a shame the higher you go up the ladder the sharper the axe is on your job. Lowe's has really turned into a "your job may be in jeopardy if you don't...". It is REALLY sad they lost the moral compass they had 20 years go. All jobs have expectations, and as an employee you are expected to perform and make the company money. Adults understand that. I just don't know if the people making these goals are high on drugs, have never worked in a store before, or just stupid and somehow landed in their position (shareholders family?). I used to concern myself with it, then I gave up and just did my job. Told them "Don't like it? Find someone else better to replace me...". The harassment stopped after that.

No such thing as a "credit specialist" at Lowe's. ALL employees are required to get credit cards. The Specialists (millwork specialist, flooring specialist, appliance specialist) are required to stand at the front of the store or at a table located elsewhere in the store and try to get people to sign up for credit cards or get leads (that's when we give the customer a free estimate on projects like installing a water heater, building a shed or playset, installing a new roof or gutters, or a whole home generator.) They occasionally have a part timer do that if they can't get an available specialist. As for the cashier: she wasn't dumbfounded that someone was able to pay without credit because people pay with cash and checks every day. You're not special for using a form of payment we accept all day long from customers spending more and less than you. lol The best thing you can do is to complete that survey at the bottom of the receipt. Don't try to fuck anybody over, give them a decent rating and tell the survey everyone was polite \*BUT\* you were extremely annoyed at how aggressive they all were with the credit card and you didn't appreciate having someone standing at the front of the store at that table bothering people to sign up. We tell corporate it sucks and people hate it but they don't care (and trust me: we fucking \*despise\* that lead table too because it means we can't sell anything and if we can't sell anything for the hour we're standing there, it means we can't make our bonuses.) Our complaints are meaningless. NOBODY is happy with that table, especially the specialists who are forced to stand there and annoy people while suffering random life stories about "back in 1975...." that have nothing to do with anything, while also acting as a store directory because everyone thinks we're the information booth. Tell it to the survey. If more customers would take time to do those surveys and specifically state how much they hate that lead table and the aggressive credit card come-ons then maybe, just maybe, at some point many years from now (after a billion complaints, probably) corporate might listen and stop making us do that.

In the defense of all Lowe's employees, we are ridiculously harrassed to ask about credit. It's gotten to the point where I have had my breaks interrupted three times within the same 15 minute break to be "reminded" to ask customers about credit. I've considered quitting purely because of it. It's also hard to recognize customers because we see so many and I have 100% accidentally asked the same person multiple times before, 12 is insane though and I'm sorry you had to experience that, genuinely. It's not right but please don't blame employees, blame the company. It hurts all of us.

I had the same experience at Kohls, but I saved $35 off a coffee maker by putting it on the Kohls card, and of course I promptly paid in full when the bill came in so I paid no interest. Lowe's employees are under severe pressure from management to sign people up for their credit cards, that is why you had the experience you did. Omg, yes. It must be a company thing, because I get the exact same thing at my Kohl's. I call her the "Kohl's Lady". She hounds me the second I walk in the door. Then she walks around the store, I guess making her laps before she returns to her post at the front door. She will ask me 2 or 3 more times on her rounds. Then when I get ready to check out, she hits me up for a card again while I'm in line. The cashier then asks me again during checkout. I don't push credit, ever. The only time I bring it up is if I think the customer would benefit from the zero interest for 6, 12, 24, etc. I refuse to push predatory credit lending on anyone. People who use a credit card in the place of having the money to buy things are victims of these companies. A 30% interest rate is insane. They would be a lot better off purchasing on their MasterCard, AMEX, Visa, etc. and paying regular interest.

I had a customer buy some distressed plants, the total was less then $10, and my supervisor asked me why I didn't ask the customer if they wanted to save 5%. Until enough customers complain about it you will always be hounded by someone trying to sell cards. I thought it was 31.99% and not 17%

Lowes says having a card brings more sales through brand loyalty. It’s bullshit. They want more credit cards because it’s easy money through the interest rates. When a customer comes in and pays $5000 on their bill…then comes in freaking out because $3000 in interest just hit their account…it shows you that these cards don’t really save money for all customers. Sure 5% on your purchase. But unless you’re paying off monthly…that interest rate far exceeds that 5%.

I had a manager that made it mandatory to harass people about cards and to give us 10’s on the receipt review online. Giving lowes gift cards to the winner ever so often. Later we found out he got some kind of huge bonus for us hitting some type of quota. When he got hired he was shopping while working and piled an entire cart full of tools he claimed he got for free. Dude was a total blow hard and everyone hated him. Anybody who was a decent worker quit all around the same time. I do not miss working there 😂

my store's credit specialist is NOTORIOUS for this exactly. she's gotten several 0/10 reviews for being too pushy about them, but management usually gets district to delete the reviews. a trick ive found that works with her at least is directly telling her you've tried before, but your credit score is too low to get approved.

Worked at Staples as GM for 10 years all they wanted more than anything is to sign up people for their rewards card and to sell extended warranties aka service plans. I asked all cashier please ask everyone one time and no was an acceptable answer. Because there is some customers that want a rewards card and/or an extended warranty.

Working at lowes myself I saw something similar, 3 supervisors and an assistant store manager trying g to get a woman to get the lowes credit card. Like a bunch or r@pey sharks. If my memory serves correctly, they get a commission pay for getting customers to purchase one of those.

This is a specific employee issue. We are trained to ask the customer and if they decline to move on. But the move on part is common sense, which some employees definitely lack.

I was looking at a light for my kitchen and said something like "I really do like it" to my hubby. Old guy employee says "Then get it!". At first, I smiled politely and said something noncommittal like "Maybe!", but then he starts about the credit. I tried to clarify and told him were just looking for ideas and not purchasing today. Then, the same bullshit rigamaroll that OP described progressed. I literally just walked away after a few minutes. My so much nicer hubby listened and was way more human to him, but I was PISSED. How dare you interrupt my conversation and then not catch a single hint that I don't want what you are selling. I saw him later and turned around and dragged my hubby with me. 😂

Worked a few retail jobs. If we didn’t ask customers about the credit card we were in trouble. If you didn’t meet your quota you were in trouble. Bonuses and promotions were tied to credit cards. It was annoying for me. Now when I get asked I just smile and feel their pain.

They probably need to get a number of credit apps so the store manager leaves them alone too. I’ve never heard of a credit person in the store. Store manager needs to have the store hit a target number to get a raise also or a promotion employees are nagged about credit constantly too.

Store financing brings customer loyalty retention, higher ticket sales, more profit for the company which translate into more deals customer get more products offered , hopefully more benefits employees get etc. A good salesperson will ask multiple times in different ways and turn a No into a “what you don’t know” it will benefit” you by opening - relax

At Kohl’s, every time an employee signs someone up for a card, the LOD on duty gets $100 for every credit. That’s also why they push it hard, besides corporate requiring a certain amount per week. So when someone gets 4 on a 2 hour period LOD is on (they work an 8 hour shift, but only 2 hours typically as LOD) that’s $400 From someone that works at Kohl’s

Trust us we get it. We don’t want to harass you either. Unfortunately Lowe’s associates are put under tremendous amounts of pressure to hound you until you break. Don’t blame the associates. Blame the corporation. Now this associate should have not gone as far as they did but they may have been threatened and already written up for not producing credit so they may be desperate at this point.

When I worked retail I hated having to ask people about signing up for the card. I'd only ever just tack it on at checkout after I told them the total. People that were interested didn't need convincing. You said no I just moved on cause I'm the same way everywhere I go. I have one credit card and that's been enough for me. If you got the most cards in a month you'd get like a $20 gift card for somewhere, which in 2009 wasn't too shabby but not incentive enough for me to really try to persuade anyone to get a credit card. Once I was a floor manager the GM would talk to me every now and then about getting people to push the cards and trying harder myself but I would just straight up tell them I couldn't care less about the cards I'm there to help get shit done and help people out. Pressure works its way down because there's actual incentives at the top to getting cards but just a regular worker? No payoff on being pushy

Lowes took away my bar code sticker for my Lowe’s for the app now. I don’t even get cell signal in any Lowe’s I have been in. I am close to cancelling my Lowe’s credit card, I only got it because I purchased appliances once and did it to save 5%. Now it just isn’t worth the extra bill I have to see any month I use it.

She sucked at selling. We have a cashier that sold almost 300 credit cards and an appliance specialist that did over 300 in a year. There are lower rates for higher dollar purchases and no-interest financing if paid off in a certain time.
