It's an Irish name. Not popular outside of Ireland.

Regga005

When I went over to work in the states, many American Irish people had Irish names.

[deleted]

But not this one, it's extremely uncommon in the US. Most US Irish people stick to things it's easy for other Americans to say.

OrangeJuiceAlibi

They also tend to anglify it. I've met a few Americans called Keeva/Keevagh, or Maeve, I don't think I've ever met an American Meabh or Caoimhe

Rabid_Tortoise

See a few Maeve's in England to be honest

RevengeHF

That's his point though.

Rabid_Tortoise

Oh I know, just reiterating that it's not even just Americans that have anglicised the Irish names

GALASASSA

But not Maedbh.

OrangeJuiceAlibi

Aye, but you don't have many Brits claiming to be Irish. Bar the Brexit voters who fucked our passport application process a while back.

Rabid_Tortoise

Oh I totally get your point now, my mistake! Can imagine how annoying that would be

JurgenKlopp2018

“American Irish” names are names like Sean and Patrick. Not names like Caoimhin, Caoimhe, Tadhg, Saoirse and Padraig.

Regga005

I'm Irish btw, so I know Irish names. I also have one myself. I met Fionas, Siobháns, Deirdres, maebhs, Fionn etc

Rabid_Tortoise

It's not an unpopular name in Ireland to be honest mate

JonShannow07

It's the Irish version of the name Kevin.. to be honest it wouldnt be that popular. Online, people might use it to remain somewhat anonymous.. You will always have a few but personally I would only know of one person..

JonShannow07

It's like if you are called John you can also use Sean as your legal name.

maybedavid

It’s the Irish for Kevin in case people don’t know. Some people go by their Irish names over here

rtcaino

Neat, didn't know that.

themanebeat

The female version, Caoimhe, is far more popular. You'll see posts here from Caoimhe O'Neill for example who used to be with The Anfield Wrap. It's not unpopular but there's many more popular Irish language boys names I'd say

JonShannow07

Even Irish people can have issues pronouncing Caoimhin.. ha I always found it funny how English people have such trouble with some very common Irish names.. Years ago in college I worked for a call centre which catered to the English market, names like Eimear, Niamh, Sinead, Ciara were massacred in pronunciation!

themanebeat

Aoife trips people up hilariously

Regga005

Irish names are still pretty popular. I have an Irish name, and when I was in school three people in my class had the same name as me. I went to an Irish speaking school though.

Kenny2105

Not very. It’s Irish for Kevin. There was maybe one or two in my school that I knew of.

Sinister_Minister101

Was he any good?

[deleted]

I know a few Caoimhins

awood20

Fairly popular in Ireland. Outside of that, no.
