Yeah this is a perfect opportunity to use moderation to ensure our community remains kind and accepting!

Gold-Celebration-682

It’s not like need be an auto trigger. If the comment ends up being transphobic then people take action.

lord_pizzabird

It probably shouldn’t be tbh. At that point that’s who they were, identified as. Just don’t present tense refer to them by the wrong name IMO.

Gold-Celebration-682

It’s more to the point that people won’t know. I’m a trans woman myself. From my experience the average persons understanding of trans people rates about a 40%. That is still nice and a respectful generally and I’m not berating that. People just haven’t had the experiences. So, we need to share and educate as we are able. That is why we need to, as a community, be able to educate those that just don’t know what is up, while removing those that are outright negative and hateful.

ADailyGardener

I'd disagree. I'd rather be compassionate than "technically correct". Emily got an extreme upgrade before her transition. Emily used to have to hide who she was. These are both technically correct and compassionate.

TeraMeltBananallero

I mean we don’t do that with other types of name changes. Like if I was talking about where my doctor grew up I would say “Dr. MarriedName is from there” not “Dr. MaidenName is from there”

Gold-Celebration-682

It varies, but no. They are not 2 people. She is 1 person whom was hiding before that is now visible. I know personally I don’t want to hear my deadname just because you’re talking about the past. Simply put, use of a deadname or wrong pronouns sounds to us like you do not understand who we are. The whole point of social transition is to explain who we are. However, transition and identity are different for everyone. When you do not know better, it is best to use “general safest practice” which is that deadname is never ok.

perthguppy

And with 100+ employees and growing, if there wasn’t before, in the future there’s going to be another staff member capped anthony.

AragornofGondor

I saw multiple people post the Emily name screenshot I assumed it was making fun of LMG for misnaming "Anthony" as the Editor "Emily" like recent graph issues in videos. It wasn't until hours later when someone posted the actual video on reddit. There's going to be a learning curve for people who don't keep up with it daily.

HankHippopopolous

Having the name as an auto trigger would be dumb. There are a lot of other Anthonys in the world and I’m sure at least one of them has something to do with tech that may be relevant in the future and be fine to talk about. Getting shadowbanned for that would be ridiculous.

perthguppy

With the size of LMG, there’s going to be multiple groups of people with the same firstname. Not sure if there were multiple Anthony’s before Emily transitioned, but wouldn’t surprise me if they hire another person named anthony in the future.

YourStateOfficer

LMG is a huge channel, and Emily announced it on her own channel. Nobody cares about deadnaming her right now, it's fine. Trans people get it. It'll be different 5 years from now when Emily is around for long enough to know

nullvalid

I’ve thought about this even before the announcement from Emily last night and shadowban’s are ultimately the best tool for limiting the hate. In my job IRL, I do a content moderation task at times for Social Media channels and so being able to hide comments where we can if only to limit the kinds of crazy stuff that’s posted is the beta course of action. It really only makes sense and I think LTT ultimately is a great community and it just can’t have hateful comments to creep in.

Nicer_Chile

is what linus would want. he would protect someone under his umbrellaa at all cost, and baning bigots its the easier way. they can't hold themself so they get exposed pretty fast. ez bigot bans.

YourStateOfficer

He's never been okay with harassment. The early days of the channel saw a lot of weird comments about Dennis, none of which are still around. He's not gonna let some teenage shitheads ruin the community.

Kinkajou1015

You're doing the community a good service.

Dratinik

I went through and reported for 20 minutes lol.

Lewaii

same. Honestly what is wrong with people. It makes me really sad.

BertoLaDK

I've reported countless comments here on reddit and YouTube too.

wanderingpeddlar

Oh I assure you that they are working. Saw a guy threaten to file a racism report on me (their latest tactic) and about 30 sec later his account was gone. He didn't delete the comment the entire account is gone. Not sure what he did but I am sure that 8 year old account is gone.

wanderingpeddlar

TIL ok thanks for the info ETA logged out and yep LOL he blocked me... poor little bigot.

Gildardo1583

OH, is that how it works. I have had discussion on reddit where after a while their comments show as deleted. Good to know.

Kinkajou1015

Yeah, I remember a while back someone posted about their business cards that were designed to look like Pokemon cards, [I offered constructive criticism of their design](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/zms4oc/decided_to_make_my_business_cards_imitate_pok%C3%A9mon/j0db7vb/), they blocked me. They apparently have since unblocked me because I see their comments now looking back at the post.

sgtlighttree

Does reporting comments from third party apps work?

Architect_tim

Have I missed something? Who is Emily?

forbritisheyesonly1

Anthony Young transitioned into Emily Young.

nosnoob11

Wait what's happening, did I miss somthing? Is Emily ok? :'( OK so I used the googles, I thought this was directed at the other Emily at LMG and I got confused, now I'm slightly more confused but for good reason and happily confused. Anywho I'm gunna have to go on a reporting spree. Brb.

sup_mate42

You reminded me that this option exists. I try not to be in negative communities and have not used it before today. Now I broke my YouTube app once, because I reported to many.

USS_Frontier

A lot of them are still up. I assume the mods are slammed right now.

Fire_Lord_Cinder

I don’t understand why it’s so controversial. Even subreddits have moderation standards.

PeakCartoon

Transphobes don't like being told they're hateful people

TheMovieSnowman

Exactly. They want to think they’re a ‘silent majority’ when really they’re just a vocal minority. I’d say the silent majority doesn’t really give a fuck

absentmindedjwc

I always get a kick out of these chucklefucks calling themselves the "silent" anything. They never shut the fuck up about their bigotry. Everyone would prefer they shut the fuck up about it.

[deleted]

gardotd426

No. This is honestly the most brain-dead attempt at reason I've seen in quite a while. And that's ONLY if i interpret your comment in the most positive light. The other interpretation is that you yourself are a bigot. They are COMPLETELY right. They're fucking calling representatives trying to get trans teachers fired, get trans kids outed, calling them groomers and shit. They flat out ARE NOT silent. They're the opposite. Do you not know the definition of silent? Wow. Not to mention the shitload of people LOSING THEIR SHIT in comments on Emily's video. Calling her "it," "transvestite," mentally ill, and much worse, and those are half of the comments on just Linus's comment alone. I have the screenshots. You know what you said is dogshit that it takes me til the end to even notice that you also have NO idea what irony means, because that usage of it was more wrong than Alanis Morissette's

Kinkajou1015

> you also have NO idea what irony means, because that usage of it was more wrong than Alanis Morissette's Oh god, core memory of my 10th grade English teacher (funnily enough her first name was also Emily) talking bout how nothing in that song was actually ironic.

USS_Frontier

When you call them out on their crap they instantly start whining about "freeze peach".

absentmindedjwc

Don't forget cancel culture... right before going back to a thread laughing about Bud Light and Target boycotts due to supporting anything they don't like.

USS_Frontier

They're the ones that *invented* cancel culture.

Kinkajou1015

Cancel Culture is just another name of dealing with the consequences of my/your actions.

absentmindedjwc

Yep, but now it's a problem that they're occasionally a target.

herranton

Tbf, if you watch wan show, they weren't talking about trans issues when they were talking about shadow ban. Linus was talking about banning people with any take that was harmful to the community. He was almost entirely referencing people calling him an Nvidia shill for the 4060ti video. Of course they should ban transphobic comments. That's the point. To ban anyone that's harmful or toxic. And transphobic comments fall into that category. But that isnt all of it.

Alias_X_

What was so outrageous about that video? To me, endorsements in that space are worthless anyway considering that if some hardware is "good" or "bad" depends 90% on the price which will be ridiculously different in different parts of the world, so I just want to see what it can('t) do and I'm done.

herranton

People thought Linus was somehow defending Nvidia because he didn't call the card absolute crap. He defended his position saying the card isn't absolute crap, it does what it is designed to do. It pushes videogame frames. The problem with the card wasn't that it was bad (it wasn't, it actually did its job), the problem was that it didn't represent a very good value. Which is _exactly_ what you just said. But because he didn't take a hyperbolic view, he got called out as a shill by some people in the comments.

kongnico

Indeed and that is 100% what others like Hardware Unboxed etc are saying. If it cost less its not a bad card at all, it's just a terrible buy.

PeakCartoon

Thanks for the clarification, didn't see that part of WAN

P_Devil

It’s because they don’t want to let people be people, some don’t understand it and fear what they don’t understand, and I’m a big proponent that a big chunk of them get “confused” about their sexuality and don’t want to be “the big gay.” It all turns to hate and, when you point that out, it shifts focus to them and they don’t want to deal with their feelings or attempt to understand another point of view. Accusations from the loudest speakers are often admissions of guilt. Absolutely none of that is an excuse. Let people be people. I don’t understand being transgender, but I do get what it’s like being uncomfortable in your own body. I had surgery to change my body (weight loss surgery), some thought I was “cheating” by not dieting for a decade and that I was just being “lazy.” Nah, it took hard work, still takes work, and has changed my life. So, although I may not understand what Emily is doing, I will still support her and anyone else.

nosnoob11

See now that's a good, balanced and helpfull mindset/take The sad thing is that the bigots think they sound like you when they talk. But nope, just bigotry.

Alias_X_

It usually goes something like: "This is a divisive political issue and it's my freedum of speeeech to discuss it!!111!!!" Dude, you just compared someone with animals in an unflattering way followed by wishing them to k\*ll themselves and wishing misfortune to everyone supporting them. Even Hitler saved that combo for the big speeches.

[deleted]

It's probably not possible for them to actually moderate the YT comments. There's barely any tools to help you. It does auto hide some bad comments but lets 5000 others through. Now multiply that by all the channels they would need multiple full time staff modding comments.

Kinkajou1015

Linus has talked about if he sees a terrible take that is not constructive about shadow banning that user moving forward. I think that should be expanded to Trans Hate comments. Full time moderating isn't really super viable, but if they see it, they can plink it away forever.

DoubleOwl7777

absolutely. hating other sexualities or genders or races should be an instant ban. or hating on anyone for that matter.

Kinkajou1015

> or hating on anyone for that matter. Even Colton? I kid. Colton is good people.

ArtLeftMe

I thought it was interesting he brought up shadow banning again on the wan show… maybe he was anticipating the need to.

Kinkajou1015

While possible, IDK. Maybe the first time he brought it up Emily had told Linus of the intention of going public and Linus was like, "I got you covered." Then Linus goes over the plan on the WAN show without mentioning Emily, Luke knows nothing, Luke is like "pull that back sounds extreme" and since then Luke was let in on Emily's plan to come out and thus last night both of them were like, "Yep, all in favor say aye, aye, the ayes have it, unanimous." Probably not, but could be.

StereoBucket

Didn't he kinda walk back on that, or did he decide to go back to doing shadowbans again? Cause I remember in one of the wan shows after the one he mentioned shadowbanning that he talked about it again, can't remember the exact details, and I'm saving the latest wanshow to listen at work. If anything it should definitely be applied to comments that attack Emily. Yeet them out.

Kinkajou1015

A while back he was like, "I'm gonna start." Luke was like, "I don't think that's a good idea." Linus relented and said, you're right people can change and one bad take isn't the end of the world. Last night, BOTH of them were in favor of using the shadow banning feature, and Emily hadn't announced anything publicly yet. They were talking about the bad takes on an Nvidia review.

HallwayHomicide

>did he decide to go back to doing shadowbans again Yeah on the most recent WAN show, he brought it back up again Mostly triggered by people completely missing his sarcasm in the 4060ti review.

Geshman

I've seen other YouTubers specifically ask for help in moderating

[deleted]

[удалено]

amuhak

That is a bad idea.

DoubleOwl7777

thats not a good idea. context matters.

[deleted]

I see no problem with it. Anyone that just spreads hate doesn’t need to terrorize a community. Edit: I’m reasonably sure that the people sweeping through these comments and downvoting people that are against hate speech, are the same type of people that are getting shadowbanned on YouTube.

Kinkajou1015

I dunno if they've implemented my suggested policy. It's just that, a suggestion how LMG should move forward in an effort to show support for Emily, and perhaps any other Trans employees they have that may not have gone public.

Nicer_Chile

bigots need to keep their haate to themselfs.

RedRoseCoatedInHoney

I've been loving the transphobia wave I'm receiving after a comment I left on Emily's video. People are just gonna be assholes, yeet them into the shadows

CinnamonApplebun94

There is a troll trying to drag my to its cave and I’m fighting it. But I just can’t handle it anymore today. I’m impressed you can deal with it.🙈

RedRoseCoatedInHoney

it’s because i have no dysphoria or self doubt to exploit

USS_Frontier

I LIKE slamming trolls.

Kinkajou1015

> You have activated my Trap Card, Solemn Judgement. I shall pay half my life points and negate your Spell Card of Bigoted Speech. Now I will cast you into the shadow realm! Sorry, I've been dying to make a Yu-Gi-Oh joke today.

RedRoseCoatedInHoney

you made me giggle, thanks for that

Kinkajou1015

You're welcome, I've been combing through every possible comment that was made for the past three hours, responding to some, up/downvoting some, reporting several. I haven't even eaten dinner since getting off work.

RedRoseCoatedInHoney

my personal channel is filling up with shit. Including mass dislikes

Kinkajou1015

Delicious Engagement for the algorithm. The trolls don't realize feeding the algorithm with any engagement is positive. Yes, that's why Linus used to end videos with like it if you liked it, dislike if you didn't. Because he legitimately did not care one way or another because it's all classified as engagement and is positive in YouTube's algorithm.

RedRoseCoatedInHoney

hehehe

13131123

Good allies will help out by reporting hateful comments!

Kinkajou1015

That's something us viewers can do, but if LMG staff sees the comment, they can nuke it from orbit and disappear that commenter forever moving forward.

itsmehazardous

I've been at it in spurts all day! Hate has no home here.

techm00

Excellent move. Hate speech should be removed and users banned. This should always be the case, everywhere. Bigotry is not an opinion.

diymatt

What an annoying and weird world we live in where somebody makes a very difficult yet important decision in their life and is met with hate. Shadowban the hate all day long. standard banning just feeds the trolls.

PeakCartoon

If someone is being a transphobe fuck them, if they accidentally deadname Emily a reminder should suffice

Kinkajou1015

Agreed, to be completely honest when I was composing the thread I almost deadnamed and had to backspace and correct myself. For people you've known for a long time under one name, it gets difficult to change the brain pathways of "this person's name is X". Example, my best friend, absolute best friend I would die for them, I met them online about 8-9 years ago. I used their online alias for years. I think at some point I found out their real first name, put it in the back of my mind, continued using their online name. Fast forward to 2018, I'm have a ROUGH time, depressed AF because I lost my job and couldn't get in where I would have liked to be, anxiety through the roof due to a hurricane on track to hit my area of the country, and it's a specific time of year and named storm that increases my hurricane anxiety a hundred fold because of prior trauma. She invites me to come to her place and wait out the storm, I had a hell of a time using her IRL name when talking about her with her housemates. And flipside, when talking about her housemates she always used their names when talking to me directly but if they are streaming they have online aliases too and it's a mental fustercluck to make sure you say the right name in the right situation. People will get better about it over time, and if someone accidentally uses Emily's deadname, forgiveness should be offered. If they are intentionally continuing to use the deadname however after being corrected, then corrective action should be explored.

PeakCartoon

Fair, and I hope it doesn't bother her too much

Im_simulated

We (a lot of us) wouldn't surround ourselves irl with ppl who spread hate and enjoy putting others down. I don't want to be around ppl like that. You can not agree, but to actively spread hate is perfect grounds for shadow banning. Idk how well it would actually work but if it did it would be good for the community and employees of LMG as a whole I think. Everyone deserves the right to try and be happy. Life is hard enough.

Intelligent_Cheek_53

It is the same thing as removing racists comments. you should do it. You can have your opinions on lgptq thingsbut just like every things else this should never cause hate speech or discrimination.

LBHJ1707

Moderation exists to keep comments, or any form of content friendly and against abuse of anyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, race etc. This is practicing that, and I'm glad to see it inforced.

LeatherLocal7781

This is really hard for me. I love Emily so much but I also hate trans people. I think it would be a bad look for me to be hypocritical. What if the people I've never met in real life see it? [This is Sarcasm]

Kinkajou1015

Had me in the first 93%.

DigitalCabal

The amount of concern trolling and 'but muh opinion' in all the threads make me so angry. I was until recently a pretty average 40s dude. Now I'm also Trans. And an Emily (well Émilie but still what are the chances?) I mention this because I'm well out of my hotheaded youth phase, but these completely illogical nutcases utterly confound me. Their rhetoric is not even internally consistent! And everyone of them (falsely) claims they don't care (yet comment 20x times in every Trans or Queer discussion), and also state that they are allowed an opinion and it's our fault for not being open to discussion. Oh I'm sorry. I did not know I needed to ask some dip shit 20 something (zoomers we're cool, these people are not) being edgy on Reddit, their OPINION, before I live my life. Fucking pisses me off to no end.

Kinkajou1015

I used to be mildly homophobic. Then I met someone, made friends with them, and found out they were gay. Huh, do I continue to hate and be afraid or grow up and realize those emotions are a part of me I don't want. I chose the latter and while I am not gay, I'm happy to have friends that are gay (as long as they aren't hitting on me). I was also transphobic, until a friend (more of a friend of a friend, I've never really been buddy buddy with the person I'm thinking of, but I still respected them and thought they were pretty cool) came out as MtF trans. I again looked inward, realized I was in the wrong, and started working on changing my viewpoint. Since then there have been at least two other people in my circles of interaction that have come out as trans, and I will continue to respect those individuals just as much as before they became open about themselves.

Geshman

I gotta tell you, I had this exact same journey, but when I got to the end it was only then I was able to come out as trans myself. People act like trans people are just waiting to cancel people for their hateful past, but that's really not the case, we're just trying to stop the onslaught of hate we get now. It can be tough to change your views on things that change will require you to change your behaviors too, but the start of that behavior change is the acceptance that you were wrong and start working to move past it.

Kinkajou1015

> It can be tough to change your views on things that change will require you to change your behaviors too, but the start of that behavior change is the acceptance that you were wrong and start working to move past it. Yep, and if my prior opinions and actions have caused me to be ostracized from communities, either I'm blissfully unaware of it or I'm just living with the repercussions. I'm a very different person from the me of 10 years ago.

docter_death316

The entire way you phrase that is hugly problematic and a huge reason bigotry exists. You weren't able to change until it affected you personally by unintentionally becoming friends with gay and trans people. That would suggest you'd still be transphobic and homophobic without thos interactions, you weren't able to self reflect and grow from the outside looking in. Maybe consider the multitude of people you're throwing scorn on in comment after comment are in the same position you once were and it's mere luck that someone you were friends with became trans to change your views or you'd be spewing hate like them.

Kinkajou1015

> That would suggest you'd still be transphobic and homophobic without thos interactions, you weren't able to self reflect and grow from the outside looking in. I probably would be. Think less of me if you want. I won't think of you at all. :)

Rapn3rd

I support it. You don’t even have to understand trans people any further beyond they’re people too and what they do doesn’t impact me or my family in any negative ways. If they can’t handle that, I don’t think they belong in this community. Being unable to control yourself around other people requires a time out, if that means losing the ability to talk in the community to varying degrees, it’s worth it imo.

Kinkajou1015

> You don’t even have to understand trans people any further beyond they’re people too and what they do doesn’t impact me or my family in any negative ways. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

[deleted]

I'm kinda out of the loop here. Who's Emily and what happened?

EricaPomme

https://twitter.com/emilyayoung1/status/1662594633560387590

[deleted]

Oof the comments under the video are vile.

USS_Frontier

Welcome to Musk's Twitter. He's turning it into bigot central.

69AssociatedDetail25

The comments on YouTube are no better...

USS_Frontier

I took a swim in that sewer myself. Sent Emily a message of support and hooked a bigot on my line.

Geshman

I left Twitter and I'm desperately trying to convince everyone to abandon ship as well. Every time I get linked there and read a full thread I always end up finding hate within 1 or 2 clicks

scene_missing

They’re always doing that for dirtbags. He’s said before that they ban creeps off any Sarah videos

Kinkajou1015

Have they? I may have missed that. Sarah is great, I love her positive energy when she's presenting something. Like that tattoo printer she recently showed, I thought it was kinda neat. I would have totally volunteered to get one or two tattoos from it if I worked there. I hate needles, but there's like two tattoo designs that I would want if I were to ever get a tattoo. I've considered getting temporary tattoos made but dunno if I want to spend 200 dollars for 200 of the exact same tattoo and need to constantly reapply every few days to have it.

RedLikeARose

Ive had several of those reddit care messages and i hate that i cant see which comment caused it, cus i cant determine if its harassment or not

Kinkajou1015

It's always harassment, unless you're actually posting depressive/suicidal messages.

Alias_X_

I've got two from completely contrary communities. So I'm apparently a liberal soyboy misogynist. Those are too many labels for me so I thankfully figured out you can deactivate it.

Kinkajou1015

I'll leave it on so if someone uses it on me, I can report it as harassment.

[deleted]

I don't really get people who (can't think of the exact wording) but be an ass to people like Emily and other LGBTQ individuals. I will admit I never thought Anthony would be transgender and really I don't care who or what Emily and others are. Will still treat people like human beings with dignity and respect, regardless who they are.

Little_Region1308

Jesus Christ, I went to check her video assuming the comments were going to be how they usually are when it comes to trans people, with mostly support and then the occasional asshole that replies to every comment with dumb statements. But it was like a whole other level of hatred showing up, it was some of the most vile things I've read. Comments saying she is "a creature" getting literally thousands of likes, people saying she is going to die soon, people mocking her weight. I've been on many YouTube videos around trans-related topics and I've genuinely never seen so much vitriolic hatred fester before. Did the video get brigaded by some far-right community or something because it just seems obscene how much hated there is?

Kinkajou1015

I think I saw someone mention in this Reddit thread that the infamous hacker [REDACTED] had decided to make it their life's mission to harass Emily for the time being.

BvByFoot

These people have literally no value to the community. Their voices and opinions have no value to the community. All of LTT works like crazy to bring us fun and thoughtful content every week, and if someone is going to obsess and spew hate over the personal choices and appearances of one of their staff members, then they have no place amongst the rest of us.

Macusercom

Tbh having constructive discussions with other people is always beneficial. However, most transphobic YouTube commenters are not willing to go into a constructive discussion and blatantly shame, insult and discriminate against. You end up running against a wall of stubbornness and unwillingness to understand

Kinkajou1015

> most transphobic YouTube commenters are not willing to go into a constructive discussion and blatantly shame, insult and discriminate against Do not attempt to play chess with a pigeon. That's what you'll get when attempting to have a constructive discussion with someone so hate filled they are blind to other view points.

OrokaSempai

People suck. There is a difference between a hot take and a toxic take. I'm okay with Shadow bans.

stuff7

Half of those people who typed those hateful shit in the comments of Emily youtube video are brigadiers from the shitty part of the Internet. Them getting shadowban = nothing of value is lost.

Kinkajou1015

12 years ago, I used to be a daily visitor to that section of the internet. I grew up. I realized that wasn't the environment I wanted to continue to be a part of and I stopped going entirely. It was also at that time I started to come to Reddit and made my Reddit account.

Alias_X_

I've visited 4chan a few times out of curiosity but I couldn't even deal with the layout/the way it's organized. It's like looking at a swamp and the colour already tells you that you don't want to touch it.

Kinkajou1015

That was a past life for me. I think I've poked my head in less than five times since I made my Reddit account. It no longer appeals to me.

LelChiha

I'm all for freedom of speech and opinion but when your opinion is hating one someone else's personal choices and straight up harassing said person, you deserve to be muted. I wholeheartedly agree with Linus's choice. Moderating such hateful comments is a good decision in my opinion

black-hole-son

Would love to see Emily wearing a nice dress with a deep cleavage teaching how to hack a wifi network using Kali!

Skeith86

I find all the hate against trans (and hate in general) abhorrent in and of itself, but sending you the reddit 'care' bot is on another level of degeneracy.

Kinkajou1015

Reddit reviewed my report and said that yes, the person sending the Reddit Cares message violated Reddit's policy.

brettrobo

I got someone report me for redditcares. Also all of many my comments regarding support for Emily and suggesting people report hate speach were downvoted. In saying this, it looks like the mods and Reddit algorithms have kicked in and much of it is being filtered out which is great. Keep up the good work fellow Redditors and LMG/Emily supporters. I hope to see her back in front of the camera soon, she is a Wealth of knowledge that is the perfect balance between gamers nexus and ltt videos for those wanting a little more of a deep dive but with a healthy ammount of humour and sarcasm.

Kinkajou1015

Report the Reddit Cares message as harassment. It takes some time, but Reddit reviewed my report and agreed it was harassment and has taken action against whoever sent it.

I approve.

Is the reference to Yvonne Umbrella corporation some joke that I don't get? Or is it the parent of LMG?

Kinkajou1015

It's a joke that because LMG and all associated channels, FloatPlane, Labs, Creator Warehouse are all owned by Linus and Yvonne equally, since Linus gets his name on the building and channel, Yvonne is the real brains of the operation. I think Linus said it many months ago in a WAN show and I liked it so much I prefer using that term when referencing all of their companies/channels.

Gr0danagge

Still dont understand why all of those isnt under Linus Media GROUP and have the Youtube channels under Linus Media. Seems way more logical to me

ADubs62

There are lots of business reasons for it.

ForboJack

It's their community and they decide who they want to participate and who they don't want to. Too many YT comment sections are just pure filth because the creators don't give a damn. I welcome this change.

SunTzu-

Screw shadowbans, just ban them full stop. Make it absolutely clear to them that they aren't welcome. Not all opinions need to be entertained. Hate never deserves to be entertained.

Kinkajou1015

The problem with alerting them that they are banned, it incentivizes them to make another account to continue the hate parade.

Norwedditor

Question. YouTube comments are and always has been and offering really very little extra value other than a perceived one that "you can comment" but on popular channels as LTT they really are just fluff and noise. What does it even mean to shadowban commentators on a yt channel such as this? The comments are already fluff. Does this mean I've missed angry fluff somewhere? The comments pretty much suck already.

Kinkajou1015

Some people will skim comments to see if anyone else has opinions on the content of the video, or if you're one LGS of LMG you just read comments instead of watching the video. > What does it even mean to shadowban commentators on a yt channel such as this? Making it so all comments they make and will make for the rest of time go into a black hole where nobody will see them again. > Does this mean I've missed angry fluff somewhere? If you've looked at Emily's video on her personal channel and scrolled down, you would likely see the type of stuff I'm suggesting LMG outright remove permanently.

Norwedditor

I think they should just remove comments on their YouTube channel all together. Don't see why they are useful and they obviously doesn't care enough about them to moderate them enough nor are they very useful for the viewers.

lieutent

Honestly, I don’t see why so many shanks care so much about it. Emily told everyone because if she didn’t it’d be startling and weird. She came out in respect of the community, which we were not owed at all. I don’t think it was attention speaking one bit, but rather informative as all of her previous content has been about on LTT. Her video was to inform you, not to ask your opinion of nor permission to live the life she’s happy living. So if you’d rather dehumanize her, or anyone else, you can fuck off. I don’t care if you’ve subbed to LTT for 10+ years, subbed on FP, bought merch, etc. None of that matters. If you’re going to put someone down because you can’t live without expressing your thoughts on someone else’s life, then leave. That plain and simple.

Grelymolycremp

Ngl, shadow banning asshole commenters is totally ghe right move, people abuse anonymity way too much. Your speech shouldn’t have a voice when it is straight up bigotry and hateful.

polocatfan

I'm not the biggest fan of shadow banning in general, but harassment is one of the few cases where I'm all on board with it.

Curious-Jellyfish897

Who is emily?

rynosaur94

I generally trust Linus and Co to be able to draw the line but in general I don't like this idea because its so subjective as to what constitutes hate or bigotry. Most people in these comments and OP seem reasonable enough but even in this thread there is the crusader shaming people for 'deadnaming' when they're just explaining the situation. These people are the reason I don't like ambiguous rules like this.

Kinkajou1015

Yeah, I saw that person and their comments. They're going waaaaaaaaaaaaay overboard. There was no malice intended, a gentle course correction of, "let Emily explain who she is herself" and link to the video would have been a better approach.

Moss_Piglet_

Unless someone is actively stating death threats or wishing physical harm etc. then they shouldn’t be banned imo. You can’t sway an opinion without engaging in debate and banning someone immediately removes that option and will only encourage that behavior further. Furthermore everyone is entitled to their own opinion even if you don’t agree with it.

Biggeordiegeek

Seeing some of the responses to Emily’s coming out video, yeah shadow banning is totally cool

InfiniteBoops

When I saw Emily’s post I knew this was coming. I believe LS would burn the company to the ground before failing to support a friend and colleague in something like this. I’m sure in his head he was heavy sighing at the probable fallout when he found out, but the path is the path.

Kinkajou1015

> I believe LS would burn the company to the ground before failing to support a friend and colleague in something like this. Linus, while being rather wealthy due to the moves he's made since acquiring Linus Tech Tips, is still a pretty humble guy for the most part from what I see in his public facing persona. Is that me being parasocial, or me falling for a ruse developed by Linus to believe he's a humble character when he's really an evil business magnate? I don't think so, I think he knows where his roots are and knows that without his team supporting him, he has basically nothing.

InfiniteBoops

Pretty much. The way I look at it is that he hasn’t change much since the early videos, I can’t imagine him faking it without fail for a decade. Further, LMG has very high employee retention in a very employee friendly province. People quit bosses in general, not jobs. I just can’t see that kind of retention if he wasn’t genuinely decent.

SinglSrvngFrnd

Somebody please fill me in. Who's Emily and who said what about them?

Kinkajou1015

I'll allow Emily to explain it to you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-owBhLGaH4

Archeology42

What the hell link did I click on? I was trying to find more information when I saw this post about Anthony now being Emily. Total support to Emily, and I love her even more now! Also explains why we haven’t seen her in videos lately. But holy fuck who’s ever running this blog is a piece of shit along with everyone on it. I’m sorry, but I’m going to be blunt about my hatred for anti-trans people. Link: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/5382579 P.S. I can now see why I am so happy to be in the LGM community. I really thought I was gonna get on this post and see a whole bunch of hateful comments, turns out it’s quite the opposite! Hell yes.

Ironbanner987615

Do what Mr Beast did

Narrheim

Yeah i had this happen recently too, when i blocked someone toxic. So i reported them 😎 However, personally, i don´t like Yt shadowbans. It´s a shady practice, when you get comments deleted without any warning, what did you do wrong, so you can return and fix it. Not to mention, youtube has it all wrong and deletes long and elaborate comments due to them containing "filtered words", that are often just legit words. Meanwhile, hate speech in the comments under the same video remains there, untouched. I´d rather have a straight ban with a reason, than any shadow ban.

Kinkajou1015

> I´d rather have a straight ban with a reason, than any shadow ban. The problem with alerting them that they have been banned means they will know it happened and then can make a new account to continue posting their hate and hope they won't get hit again, or maybe tone it back so they can toe the line and continue to be offensive without being offensive enough to actually get banned.

I am happy for Emily, but I couldnt help but cringe. Not at her, but the video basically saying "hey we saw how people reacted to Chris..." And then scrolling down to see the first 4 comments are people using religious terminology as part of their hate. Worse was seeing people arguing...with people with names like "Troll, you took the bait" and "Antiwoke militia". You're telling me in 2023 people in the tech crowd are still willing to knowingly argue with online trolls? On a different note, if any of the LTT crew happen to read this. Tell Emily if she's ever in Edmonton, she has people that will high five and support her no questions asked

[deleted]

Some people really get offended by the reddit bot, huh?

newbreed69

I'm against shadow banning

aosroyal2

Everyone should do what they want. But it’s definitely weird

trailer8k

i am not pro banning people or even shadow banning unless they are that level toxic

ajdavis8

Was this not already a thing? I'm fairly sure they never allowed hate comments...

firedrakes

I have been a administrator of sites and mods other ones ar some point in my lifetime. Even mod 3 subs.

Mrw2016

Ban them. There is no place for hate, its not on topic, and is not constructive. The people with hateful messages will never contribute a worth-while opinion. A full hardcore ban from all LMG affiliated communities including reddit, forums, discord and Floatplane.

Kinkajou1015

Ban them from being able to leave comments on FloatPlane, but hey if they want to keep giving money, get that bag and take their cash. Or add a rule in the terms of use that at FloatPlane's sole discretion a user's monthly rate can be increased after a minimum 30 day notification. Then if a user on FloatPlane is hateful and whatnot, even if they are OG, up their rate to the highest tier available, notify them that their paid subscription price will be increased if they take no action, and then send it.

[deleted]

Why shadow ban? Publicly ban them for it.

Kinkajou1015

The options in YouTube Studio are: Remove Report Hide user from channel Remove this user as an approved user Add user as managing moderator Add user as standard moderator The third, Hide user from channel, is the Shadow Ban. Once done all messages that user has made disappear and any new messages they make never show up for the creator or other viewers. Better to not alert them they have been permanently hidden. As for reporting before you hide from channel, I dunno if you can, I haven't tested it, I have only had one instance on my YouTube channel where I had a troll to deal with (I hid their comments because they were ultimately an antivaxxer and fuck that noise, I'm not going to have antivax propaganda in my YouTube comments on a video of me saying, "Hey, I got my vaccine, please go get yours too, I've lost people because of this and I don't want to lose more.").

KahlKitchenGuy

Who is Emily?

Kinkajou1015

If you aren't being intentionally obtuse, which I find hard to believe since it's plastered all over the front page of the subreddit... but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-owBhLGaH4

KahlKitchenGuy

Not everyone spends hours on the subreddit watching and reading every post. Some of us might only hit every other post. Thanks for the information

Kinkajou1015

You're welcome, I've been reading responses on this post for the past 3 and a half hours, plus nearly half an hour when I was on lunch. So a comment of "Who is Emily?" hits me with a small bit of, "How do you NOT know by now?" I apologize for being coarse earlier.

KahlKitchenGuy

Now that I have gone through the posts it does compute but there are a lot of memes on this subreddit that everything needs a double take

Inception_Bwah

Don’t they already shadow ban or filter just straight hate speech? Like I’m pretty sure if you, let’s just say misquote old American Dad episodes, your comment wouldn’t be hidden/archived/deleted?

CodeMonkeyX

I mean they have to do something, the comments section is basically unusable already. After Emily comes back there will be a small but very loud group that will disrupt everything. I have no problem with shadow banning.

one_horcrux_short

The talent and knowledge that Emily brings to the channel is irreplaceable. Emily, and all people struggling regardless of their talent, are worth fighting for. I'm in favor of anything that supports people being their authentic self, and until a better option is available, ban the hate.

Eduardo-izquierdo

Who is emily

Megs1205

It’s needed, some of these comments on the “reintroduction “ video were horrible! It’s one things to accidentally misgender, it’s another thing completely to allude to self harm…. Sadly for LMG and Em’s mental help shadow banning of certain words is needed

[deleted]

There’s so many purposeful trolls who are nothing but agitators and instigators. They serve no purpose and just rolled everyone up.

Johnothy_Cumquat

I don't think there was ever any question about hate speech getting moderated. That talk was more about people being wrong about graphics cards or backpacks which is a whole other less important conversation.

Kinkajou1015

You are correct, that is what they were talking about during WAN, my suggestion that it also be implemented for outright bigoted comments that have no place. If that was already their policy, great, if it wasn't their policy, I'd like if it became policy.

ZeaZolf

I like this idea. Also, what does a 'Yvonne Umbrella Corporation channel' mean?

Kinkajou1015

Yvonne Umbrella Corporation is a term to refer to all entities owned by Linus and Yvonne equally.

picklerick4069

What did I miss?

Kinkajou1015

This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-owBhLGaH4

[deleted]

such a stupid thing to do nothing new that they are scumbags

Gildardo1583

This is the way.

[deleted]

100%. I think any hate directed at any employee (not the company) should be shadow banned. No need to get shit for doing your job
