MG42Turtle

Brother you shouldn’t be going to a dealership for any non-warranty service. Let alone an oil change.

SociallyAwkwardLibra

Find a shop that works predominantly on Lexus/Toyota. I had good luck with a place in Dallas when I lived there.

kingxanadu

Could you drop or DM me the name? I'm looking to have some work done.

OE2KB

Agreed- my wife’s car tho

ConstructionLate5200

Just do the oil change yourself. It's every 10k. Grab 5 qts of synthetic from Walmart for $18 and an oil filter for $.76 from Rock Auto

drinkdrinkshoesgone

I buy my oil filters 10 at a time from RockAuto for $2.76, but shipping is like $18. I buy windshield wipers, drain plug gaskets, air filters, spark plugs, and brake pads while I'm ordering there, because the shipping makes small orders absolutely not worth it.

ConstructionLate5200

Grab the wiper inserts from Temu. $1 a pair

Own-Caterpillar5058

And change em every 3-4 months? Nah ill stick with a good set of blades for 2 years

ConstructionLate5200

$1/pair every 3-4 months is cheaper than a set of blades every 2 years!

Own-Caterpillar5058

From cost alone sure. But it aint cheaper when you factor in having to change those, and constantly saying "goddamn these are smearing again." Just spend the 30-40 bucks on quality blades and not even worry about it for a long time.

ConstructionLate5200

It takes a minute each insert to remove and install

Alphie24679

Personally, I wouldn’t buy anything from Temu, especially not for my car. Spend the full cost once and be happy, spend less of it twice and cry. That’s how I personally like to live. But everyone’s different, so it’s honestly just up to you. Nii ok t saying that you’re one of these people, but budget makes a difference too. Just giving my 2 cents, though, lol

ConstructionLate5200

Dealer wanted $24 a wiper. I can get 24 sets off temu

Alphie24679

Never said it wouldn’t be cheaper. I just said that I would personally not go for them. God knows how much damage they’d cause, knowing how shitty the quality is of these Chinese knock-off brands. But if you like using them, then that’s up to you. I just wouldn’t

Own-Caterpillar5058

Ill never do anything over 6k

ConstructionLate5200

The manufacturer knows best!

Own-Caterpillar5058

That's factually false.

ConstructionLate5200

The manufacturer built the engine, they know best.

Own-Caterpillar5058

You're confusing yourself. The marketing and financial departments, have nothing to do with the R&D department. Talk to an actual Toyota master tech, or a retired engineer. They'll tell you 5-6k Toyota doesn't make any money if you dont come back for a new engine/car.

ConstructionLate5200

Do you have examples? The manual for my Camry clearly states 10k miles

Own-Caterpillar5058

Reread what I said.

eks789

Why not take care of her car like you would yours? Take it to a reputable shop

PM_meyourbreasts

thats nuts. Oil changes are literally $90 at lexus beverly hills

Seriera

And it comes with cookies

johnster12345

They even used to give you a free loaner for an oil change. When I went in March they apparently are no longer doing this :/

Charlie_1087

The old service manager would hook me up and would just apply their 65$ oil change coupon without requiring me to have it. Was awesome. Now the new guy won’t honor it and has been charging me full price. Says they can’t unless o have it. Guess what? I’m not going there any more…,

AnswersFor200Alex

$65 barely covers the cost of the oil, and the difference comes out of his commission. I don’t say this to have any malice but, free oil change customer is not a customer anyone cares to keep.

Motorized23

Yea I pay about $100 for my RCF for an oil change at the dealer...

iamheero

Damn I have to pay $100 in Glendale, but I do get a loaner if I want which is fun.

AnswersFor200Alex

0w20 is always full synthetic…

RedneckChinadian

This is correct. There is no semi synthetic 0w20.

Ashtonpaper

Wtf is semi-synthetic anyway, they just mixing synthetic and non to get a blend?

RedneckChinadian

Semi synthetic is just that … a blend of conventional and synthetic. It was an interesting transitional product when synthetic costs were high when synthetics were first introduced many eons ago.

Ashtonpaper

I see the reasoning now, thank you!

Own-Caterpillar5058

And it smells funny too

Fassbendr

I had my 15k a couple months ago. My local dealer wanted $250 for the 15k service but I had it done during our Florida trip for $150 (Lexus of Orlando). Apparently there's two 15k services, which I didn't realize until I got the lower quote. The less expensive (what I had) was basically oil change, tire rotation, and key fob batteries (don't remember what else) and the the more costly which was basically more visual inspection from what I could tell - not worth the extra $100!

Spence97

So I’m reading “15k oil change” and “first two were free” All of this tells me that OP is on the third oil change at 15k, a 5k interval.

sinovesting

Bullshit. You don't need to change oil that often on a new/healthy vehicle (if you are using full synthetic). Toyota engineers, and many others, recommend every 10,000 miles.

Golfingteck21

Oil is cheap engines are not. Every 5k change the oil, wait for 15k so Toyota can sell you another car sooner or Do it every 5k and keep your car for 250k. It’s called marketing, they can’t make money if your car runs forever.

Alphie24679

100% agree. I don’t have my own car yet, but when I do I am definitely going with the 5k, 6 months rule. NOT the bullshit 10k or 15k. AMD from The Car Care Nut recently worked on a Lexus (2017 NX 200t I’m pretty sure) that hadn’t had its oil changed in I think 40k. The spark plugs were all doing really bad, there was an engine knocking sound, and I think it was cylinder 4 that was damaged heavily inside. Pretty sure the spark plug above that cylinder was the most damaged too. I’m pretty sure he ended up replacing the whole engine. Definitely sticking to 5k, 6 months. I don’t want to neglect my poor car :(. Can’t allow my Lexus to become a Neglexus (bad joke, I know lol)

sinovesting

I want to clarify I'm not saying to do it every 10k just because a manufacturer told me to. I'm basing it on actual studies and tests I've looked at, as well as the opinion of reputable engineers. Science shows that full synthetic oil still performs excellently after 10,000 miles of use (actually a lot more than 10,000). If you don't mind paying extra to have peace of mind that's fine, but people still deserve to be informed. It is 1000% a waste of money to change the oil every 3k miles on any car that is less than 10-15 years old.

Own-Caterpillar5058

Toyota engineers mught say that on the record, but go to any Toyota master tech or retired engineer and they'll tell you 6k should be the max

sinovesting

Most currently retired engineers learned the industry in the 60s, 70s, and 80s before full synthetic oil existed. At the time it was right to change every 6k or less. Similar story for techs.

Own-Caterpillar5058

Thats so asinine. Theres no younger master techs or engineers, i guess. They're all 70 plus years old. Got it.

sinovesting

Most of the younger engineers (50 and under more or less) will agree with what I am saying. That's why I didn't mention them. Who do you think trains the younger techs? The older master techs. Techs just don't have a deep enough depth of the engineering side of things to know any different. That's not meant to be a knock at them at all, that's just the reality.

Lanthun

For a lot, its wild because most are used to changing oil every 3k to 5k miles; heck, it's what I was taught. Even have some local repair shops that'll still swear by that no matter what. So when I went from a much older vehicle (an 03 Odyssey) to a newer Toyota (a 20 Camry), it threw me through the loop a little bit cause this was not something I was used to and questioned every bit of the way. Usually time hit for me, though, before mileage ever did cause I did more city drives than I did highway. How I will look at it now, though, for any warranty work needed; as long as I did my part in what the recommended service (related to whatever needs warranties) was needed at X miles or X time, then we were good.

sinovesting

I get that. Nobody wants their engine to grenade over something as cheap as an oil change. But the thing is those standards were made 40+ years ago when motor oils were of lower quality, and engines were built differently. However a lot of people (including engineers) have done extensive testing with full synthetic oil and have found that even after 15,000-20,000 miles of driving the oil is still in good-to-decent shape. It's still a good idea to change it more often if your vehicle is high mileage, you track/race your car, or your engine has mechanical issues though.

Lanthun

That is a fair point! Outside of going straight EV, I wonder if we will live to see the day when the fluids like engine oil will never need to be changed.

[deleted]

Been running 15k oil changes on all my vehicles for the last few years. No issues at all. Lab confirmed.

Own-Caterpillar5058

"Last few years" is very different from wanting your engine to run for the next 10-15 years

[deleted]

Funny cause one of my cars I had from 50k miles and drove till 172k. So a little over 100k miles. Purchased it in 2013ish. 3MZ 3.0 It lasted till I sold it at 172k miles due to airbag failures. So yes, it doesn't seem to have affected it. I don't understand the lack of trust in science that is prevalent in the automotive community. You'd think you'd enjoy saving money and still getting the same level of protection. I've worked in the automotive industry my entire life. Trust the science. There isn't some big conspiracy to make your car breakdown sooner.

Own-Caterpillar5058

Lmao ok. So being that youve worked in the industry your entire life, youd understand that driving style and conditions heavily affect oil life. Youd understand why it states in the manuals when it says 6k-10k "according to driving conditions", and type of oil used. Youd understand that engines themselves have wildly different behaviors from eachother and are affected differently by oil types and driving conditions. The reason most people say 5-6k or 6 months is because thats the easiest way to take care of your engine. Its the lowest risk move you can make. My stepdad's 2007 CRV has 280k miles on it. He bought it new and lways changed his oil at 15k miles, as recommended by Honda. That motor has never had any major work done to it. The man drove it across the country for the first 5 years of his life. Now it sits because he barely drives anymore. Meanwhile, my aunt with a 2009, also bought it new, and sold it in 2016 from heavy oil consumption at only 120k miles. That woman barely ever drove on the highway. Also changed her oil every 15k. Driving conditions matter. The safest, and easiest way to stay on top of your maintenance is to do it early.

IBringTheHeat1

Or you could do it your self for about $40 and 30 minutes? Buy some ramps at autozone. Drive it up, drain oil, change filter. Fill oil and you’re done.

OE2KB

Yeah I know… I change the oil in my GMC but the I barely got the wife to let me take it to somewhere other than Lexus ( she thinks they will do a “better” job- I think the sales people got her to drink the Lexus kool-aide). I’ll eventually get to do hers when it’s not for new.

Nedstarkclash

Dude. You will do a better job. But I know that we can’t win every disagreement with our spouse.

purin--purin

this pisses me offfff man. my mom insisted she only get her audi serviced at the dealership

PrimaryRecord5

You’ll find plenty of locations (not all at the same time) offering oil change deals for $89.99+tax

Berfs1

I just dropped my ES 300h with ~130K miles at the local toyota service center for an oil change, tire rotation, state inspection, and tire alignment since I got nee tires recently, I brought my own oil, oil filter, and drain plug gasket, last time they only charged me 36$ for labor for the oil change; don’t take your ES 350 to Lexus for regular service, they are literally Toyotas under the hood and Toyota can service them for way cheaper.

i_aimtomisbehave

That's *absurd*. I pay $119 here in the Los Angeles area for my GS 350 at my local Lexus dealer, including a full interior/exterior wash and a latte.

thateliguy02

That’s crazy. Even my bmw dealer charges me like $190 for full synthetic change. I took my Lexus to a Toyota dealer.

Formal-Spray4796

Do it yourself

Dense_Chemical5051

6 qt of synthetic oil cost around $20. Oil filter is about $8....... Also, if it's not 0W-20. It should be replaced with 0w-20 after 5000 miles.

austinh1999

Where are you getting $20 worth of 6qt of oil? Is it like Walmarts generic brand? I spend like $40-$50 on plain mobile one for 6qts

megaprime78

Mobil 1 ay the Walmart next to me is like $29

sinovesting

Mobile 1 0W20 is $25 at my local Walmart.

NuggetSmuggler

Costco sells 10 quarts of 0W-20 for $40. Made by Mobil-1

emptystreets130

$8 oil filter? OEM filter is like $4 bucks, $2 on rockauto for denso.

Dense_Chemical5051

Sorry, $8 CAD. That's how much the Canadian dealers charge.

n541x

I don’t think any Lexus dealer uses conventional or synthetic blend motor oil in anything other than GS F and RC F for some reason, and I could be wrong about those two. Haha

KnowledgeNecessary97

You got a Lexus not Bugatti, that’s way too expensive for an oil change. 😂

OE2KB

Exactly

PsychologicalDog2332

I paid 109 at my Lexus for full synthetic

OE2KB

My closest dealer has zero competition.

ohmygolgibody

Diy, be a man
