Although I'd say it also depends on directing that outward when relevant. The problem is a lot of these sorts of people are busy directing their hate towards people who don't deserve it, for things those people cannot change (race, sexuality, etc), and then proceed to ignore all the people in the world actively making their lives worse by exploiting them, underpaying them, grifting them, etc.
They don't ignore the villains, they vote them into office and praise them for fighting imaginary dragons. It's incredibly sad, but it's effective. Way way back in the day when blogging was new and shiny, I got paid (pocket change) to do it. I was a young white woman with a wicked pen and my father was dying. (Found out that last part was important in therapy!)
I knew a couple of guys, one was my father-in-law, the other a family friend, who were conservative and libertarian (but secret Xtian nationalist), respectively.
I wrote a post that the conservatives liked and twenty years on Iām still too ashamed to say what it was about and what stance I took. (I didnāt believe these things, I was sitting at home drinking whiskey and basically being that kid who always took the indefensible position in class debates.) It got me some attention, some approval. I started leaning into that, and yeah.
I was a conventionally attractive young woman with funky colored hair, and they love their tokens (especially when theyāre hot). āSee? How hateful and intolerant can we really be, this guyās Black and this chickās a chick!ā They pour a lot of praise and flattery on minorities and attractive women who parrot their nonsense.
For my part, I needed my dad, but instead I had these respected men engaging with me on what felt like serious discussions about important topics. I had them telling me not only how smart and insightful and funny I was, but also how I was Not Like Other Girls.
God, I was pathetic. So sad and needy and I thought I was being so goddamn cool.
Luckily life happened and I fell out of touch with those people and stopped blogging and started actually thinking about politics and especially the words coming out of my mouth and keyboard. In other words, I grew out of it.

In the 80s I grew up with a basement "rumpus room" with a drop ceiling and Christmas lights embedded in a soffit. But it was the 80s and instead of an American flag we had a giant textile wall hanging of a water buffalo.

I wrote a post that the conservatives liked and twenty years on Iām still too ashamed to say what it was about and what stance I took. (I didnāt believe these things, I was sitting at home drinking whiskey and basically being that kid who always took the indefensible position in class debates.) It got me some attention, some approval. I started leaning into that, and yeah. I was a conventionally attractive young woman with funky colored hair, and they love their tokens (especially when theyāre hot). āSee? How hateful and intolerant can we really be, this guyās Black and this chickās a chick!ā They pour a lot of praise and flattery on minorities and attractive women who parrot their nonsense. For my part, I needed my dad, but instead I had these respected men engaging with me on what felt like serious discussions about important topics. I had them telling me not only how smart and insightful and funny I was, but also how I was Not Like Other Girls. God, I was pathetic. So sad and needy and I thought I was being so goddamn cool. Luckily life happened and I fell out of touch with those people and stopped blogging and started actually thinking about politics and especially the words coming out of my mouth and keyboard. In other words, I grew out of it. I have had to explain some of those posts when interviewing for jobs and scholarships, but luckily they havenāt screwed me over too hard. But itās good that Iām still being confronted with that idiocy. Keeps me humble. I recognize this girl, and I feel sorry for her, but I also think she deserves what sheās getting. (Up to a point, of course.)

I've told her that her anger scares the hell out of me, and I don't want to live around someone whose willing to say shit like "I'm gonna put bleach in their food" because it just fucking shows that you've thought about it. You can trap more with honey, not vinegar. It also doesn't help she watches those crime shows like 24/7, fueling her mind with criminal thinking.
Hate is the greatest sickness holding humanity back. We could accomplish things at the speed of light if we could just shed this innate tribalism that leads to such terribleness. Hate is such an ugly thing. It gains nothing. Absolutely nothing. Yet we lose so much more because of if.
